    I just wanted to say that having fun is definitely what is helping me be more individual and myself...instead of watching every way to get the best personal statement, I'm trying to figure out genuinely what value I can add to the course I'm aiming for. In that I'm finding more about myself and the way I learn and what fascinates me. I'm branching out into new areas like languages and ancient history and archaeology and architecture because of the process of applying for oxford.
    My true intention behind getting into applying to oxford is quite selfish: I just want to make sure I'm getting the best out of my learning experiences before I go into university. If I don't get in, at least i can take with me these wonderful life skills and critical thinking skills along with me in life. And that's that:)
    Thank you very much for your wonderfully positive and sincere advice. I hope I could meet you one day to personally thank you.

      @@JesusCollegeOxford1571 Hi Matt, is it possible to get a place with average GCSE's ( one 8, three 7s, four 6s) but high a level grades? And what would you say is the leading factor of acceptance: grades, personal statement, interview ect...?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  2 месяца назад +1

      @@lizhhh Yes, it's possible. We contextualise GCSEs. Meaning that we take into consideration the context within which the GCSEs were taken. And, we consider A-levels as better predictors of on-course performance. There is no single leading factor of acceptance, although admissions test tends to be one of the best predictors of who is interviewed and who is successful.

    Dear Matthew,
    Thank you so much for your invaluable videos! I am an international student, which means that I have an education system that differs greatly from the one in the UK; your videos were my window into how to write my personal statement - something I have never done before. I am applying for an MPhil course and am trying to follow your advice on being myself, but sometimes my statement appears to be too personal - at least to me, - and I fear that I might not show the fact that I am, in fact, prepared to study my intended subject, that I have got enough training in my Bachelor to advance further. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone who could have a look at my personal statement and give constructive criticism, so I wanted to ask: what could you advise to do in a situation like this?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  9 месяцев назад

      I'll be producing a video on statement of purpose for Masters degrees shortly.
      It's true that for these statements, we're not just interested in you as a person, but your views on critical debates relevant to the field you intend to study. In other words, we want a bit more academic depth. So tell us the sorts of questions you find interesting, who you have read, what you thought, what you hope to gain from graduate training etc.
      The instructions on the statement of purpose on the website are useful, and if you follow these to the letter you should be fine.

    • @user-dd5zh7id9u
      @user-dd5zh7id9u 8 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your detailed reply!
      Firstly, I'm really looking forward to watching your video on Statement of Purpose for Master's degrees! Meanwhile, I am using the instructions that are available on the website, but when it comes to practice, many doubts appear. I'll try to elaborate (maybe it'd even be useful for the content of your upcoming video). Usually, it's things like:
      1) Sometimes, I wonder whether the writing style that I'm using is appropriate for a master's course.
      2) Or, whether I'm stating my suitability and interest as clearly as possible.
      It's actually so easy to overlook something because when writing, one knows oneself, the whole story and what is meant by this or that sentence, but I have no context to fall back on and try to see how the Admission Committee will perceive it.
      3) Is there really only one way that is appropriate for the Statement? I've seen so many guidelines saying that it should be perfectly academic, very dry, with minimal use of stylistic devices or storytelling, otherwise Oxford wouldn't want to consider your application. Or they would, but you're more likely to get rejected.

    Just did my TSA today, honestly can't tell how well I did if I'm honest, I did a ton of prep but obviously nerves got to me and I did mess up oj the end a little bit. I am aware that there isn't a "cut of point" so to say in terms of the score and rejection because it is reviewed holistically , but how is it possible to know what they mean by this, is it possible to have a lower score than what you'd expect of a person relative to the rest of the application ( as in they didn't perform too well on the tsa but the rest of their application is pretty much outstanding) will their tsa cut them off ?? I don't know if that makes any sense- these videos were great reassurance by the way 👍

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  2 года назад

      Good luck with it! The key point to remember is that we contextualise your score.
      So, for example, if a candidate is from a relatively disadvantaged background, or has faced extenuating circumstances, then we will likely shortlist them for interviews even if they have a low score on TSA.

    Hello mat! My high school GCSEs were really bad which i regret not trying for them however i am doing really well at college currently and i am trying my hardest to be able to do A levels and get my GCSE grades up but do you think there is still a chance for me to try or there isnt point because of my “bad” GCSEs since oxford requires a lot of high grades?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  2 года назад +2

      Hi, Thanks for your comment. There are no particular grade requirements for GCSEs. And, A-levels are definitely more important. Your GCSEs will be considered, but they will be contextualised, meaning that they will be considered relative to your school and any relevant circumstances that you let us know about. So, in short, there’s a chance if you have good A levels and perform well on any admissions tests. Good luck!

    Dear Mr. Williams,
    first of all, thank you so much for your amazing videos on RUclips. They helped me a lot in this exhausting time of the application process!
    I am applying to Oxford this year which is why I'm quite in a hurry right now, but I got a question about the prediction of grades. Since I'm an international student from Germany, I have to translate my grades into English A-levels. I have the problem that I can't decide whether I should predict predict an overall "Abitur" grade of 1.3 (AAA equivalent - sufficient for PPE) or a grade of 1.2 (A*AA equivalent). Right now, a grade of 1.2 is more probable, but there is still a year of school left - including my final exams.
    I am very sure that I'm going to achieve a 1.3, but predicting the lower grade could prevent me from getting an offer. If I predict 1.2 on the other hand, with a bit of bad luck in my finals I could miss it slightly.
    What should I do? Can you give me any advice?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  3 года назад +2

      You should make an accurate prediction of what you are likely to obtain. For PPE you need AAA and will not be asked to obtain anything higher than that. If, however, you think it is likely will obtain higher than that, then you should make that realistic prediction. Best of luck! M

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571

      Hi, we usually ask for qualifications that have been obtained, or predictions as to what qualifications will be obtained. So, we don't usually ask for grade scores throughout your school career, just for the final performance. As such, it's not unusual for candidates to have improved their performance and be admitted on the basis of strong qualifications, even if they were not as highly graded earlier in their school careers.

    If I want to apply for law, would participating in MUN conferences help?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Год назад +1

      Possibly. Such conferences may well improve your debating skills, which are transferable to the law. If you were to mention MUN in a personal statement, perhaps talk about how it encouraged you to look further into international law. You could then read about some cases or resolutions that you have found particularly interesting. Attending MUN in itself is not going to give an advantage, unless you explain how it has helped you better understand the law.

      Most likely not. Simply because the opportunity to host an MUN conference is not equally available to all applicants. It's also not a clear predictor of academic potential. So we tend to focus on data that we can more easily used to compare across applicants. None of which is to say that you shouldn't take part! Hi Matt! I am a student rejected by Oxford this year, and is considering about reapplying. I just wanted to ask if reapplying while studying in another university possible? I am quite confused as the official website says no, but there are some people online that claims that they successfully transferred school from let’s say LSE, to Oxford 😢😢

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  11 месяцев назад

      Hi there. I have seen this happen for my degree (PPE) -- where students successfully apply to Oxford whilst studying at another uni. I'd guess that the success rate is fairly low, however, because the admissions tutors tend to think that the applicant already has a good uni place. Although, of course, sometimes people can be unhappy at their uni and can reasonably want to change.
