Kenan this is the best video I have ever seen you put up just because of the amount of education and information thank you this is a horrible situation I hope that this beautiful animal gets better!!!
Fusarium? That's terrifying. Fusarium Wilt is a fungal disease that affects many garden plants. I believe several varieties of tomatoes are bred to be resistant to Fusarium Wilt. I plant a garden for my tortoise, with his own plants and flowers he can browse. I will def be looking for fusarium resistant varieties for all of my garden now!
Bob Isaac im not refering to a plant disease infecting an animal per se....but like the black mold that is found growing on organic matter in damp houses,we can get sick from a fungus infecting a plant. The fusarium fungus causes a disease know as wilt in plants. It may not be the same fungal strain as the fusarium that they found in HMS, but as Mr.Sam said fusarium was found on the hay. He probably inhaled the spores and those set up shop in his lungs. Fungi are amazing at adapting to a new environment
I found out from my dogs’ vet that companies like Hartz have no regulations imposed on them for things like flea medicine, dog shampoo. She said never buy the cheap dog meds, food, etc because you don’t know what you are getting. I think that is similar to what Sam said in this video about the companies he buys his tortoise food from.
I am a horticulturist and am very familiar with Fusarium; it's a pretty common root fungus. I'm very interested in this case because I've not heard of it being capable of surviving in anything other than plant material. Still I think it may be good to look into some toxin control methods as well as anti-fungal drugs- some species of Fusarium are linked with production of some relatively toxic materials and I wonder if that is really the tort's problem; not an active infection (they may have gotten a sample and the fungus began to grow once out of the tort rather than actively growing in him) but an inability to process the latent toxins just a thought
Wow Very good info.. I learn something new every time i watch your videos kenan.. Hope HMS gets better soon. Sharing this video will all my family i have a neice that used to be a tube feeder. She is 8 years old now and understands what he is going through.
Knowing farmers that guy is 100% right. We humans eat it too. Like he said it's so little it don't effect us. Also like he said it grows 8j moist environments. So during bad rains around harvest it gets bad.
Yes you are right I haven't put the whole thing together yet, some people think i am crazy, but I think there is something going on here that needs to be looked at a whole lot deeper.
Great video showing the realities of keeping tortoises. Tortoise keeping is such a growing field, we need to continue sharing information about our experiences. Thank you so much for sharing.
Fungal infections from hay causing respiratory problems is actually something horsekeepers has to deal with for very long time and it is a very big and serious problem. Test kit would definitely help, but I do not think it is possible to completely avoid fungal spores in hay. What seems like a good solution is the steam hay sterilizers like Haygain. It eliminates not only fungus and bacteria but also dust, witch can iritate the respiratory system and make the infection worse.
Damn. It'd be expensive as hell, but Standlee Hay Co. sells really clean hays and their customer service is top tier - but you pay for it... but If I had an old extremely costly tort, I'd definitely be looking into that being the main food source.
Bailed hay being stored in damp barns or cow barns is sold thru the winter months and that's why I use Standlee Timothy hay sold in large packaged bails from Tractor Supply Co. for my tortoises, I do not feed the hay I feed my horses to my reptiles. The Standlee hay is fresh and dust free, wonderful stuff.
I lost a rabbit to a fungal infection from the hay. My heart sunk! Now I grow my own. I went to Home Depot and bout one of those 3 feet cement mixing tubs and I grow it right on my porch
Love the video man, I'm not a person that normally cries but seeing such a beautiful and powerful animal in this condition definitely made me tear up, I hope his situation improves soon. As an animal lover I can't thank you enough for all the great work you do with your videos and I thank you for sharing your passion with the kids that have an interest in reptiles and wildlife, keep up the amazing work Kenan.
Is there an update to this. I just recently saw this and I just bought a whole bag of Hay from Amazon and now i am afraid to give it to my sulcatta!! ACK!!
I just tried to donate to the GoFundMe but they shut it down for some reason... They're saying it's "paused." I know I'm YEARS after the vid but want to donate and can't
It's crazy you guys don't have test for stuff like this already.... With the Saltwater hobby we have test kits out the wazoo. Hope he pulls threw and you guys get a result.
I am thinking the same exact thing, we need a test kit to test all this commercial available food. actually in a way we do there are a lot of labs that do this type of work. the problem is there are so many foods and the quality is always changing, just like some one else said it depends on the rain and the time of the year. the real problem is, if I culture all the hay I think we will always get fungus back on the report , the problem is what level in the contamination of that particular fungus, remember in the video i said when the hay doesn't pass the stranded they just mix it with hay that is not harboring so much fungus until they can get below the benchmark.
Yes. Maybe coconut husk maybe better. But topsoil is the best bedding for tortoises as it's natural, retains moisture, and has good structural integrity. Coconut husk, sphagnum moss are quality substrates. Tortoises need 2-3 inches of bedding for burrowing.
Yes ever year my older horse wood get the Sam thing after losing 2 older house . Hay gets moldy during the winter and the spring , Sumer and get a big barn so now i looks if it’s green n the middle don’t buy it
i lovya Kenan but i cant help laugh watching him when someone else talks for more than 10 seconds, you can see he is straining to not but in,he is a definitely a talker more than a listener, and if somebody is telling a story too slow,or convoluted you can practically see him wanting to take over the story,i know this because im exactly the same, when youre a fast talker and even faster thinker "Luke Slow Talker's" can get you to pulling you hair out, see more proof but dam this guy is the King of Bush beaters, even a saint would be screaming "get to the point!!"
13:58-14:07 The lesson here: QUIT FEEDING YOUR ANIMALS COMMERCIALLY DEVELOPED "FOOD". Tortoises are not supposed to eat grains, are they?? Plus, grains are the most heavily sprayed with pesticides. Just feed them greens/vegetables.
There are recalls all the time If you look you will find alot of recalls could the bags get holes in. them did the manufactures switch from not GMO to GMO products?
We buy it in bails but that is a good question. I know we get used to and relying on a food and we come to believe "we have used that food for years" so it must be good, But many times we see the quality of products change and what we bought yesterday is not the same thing today.
Have you tried a different pen, maybe if you put a new animal in his pen and see how that one reacts to that location. Fungus as you know live beneath large areas of soil and are opportunists. After he’s well, can he go to a new, drier pen?
I get what your saying, but he has lived in that pen for 30 years with 9 other giant Galops. I just find it suspicious that ihe is sick from a fungus that I can culture out of that hay, the day I get it. Something else like i said in the video, He would get sick whenever he ate a lot of hay, i was doing so good running all over the pen, mating the girls and eating big, and then bang sick again, I just think he is sensitive to it, and i think he gets sick from it because it is contaminated more then ever. also dig around he is not the only animal getting sick from eating hay.
Hey kenan when i searched your name on google kena Harkin on google there was a website called kenan harkin adress and phone number check it out that may be what happened to the fly river turtle
Kenan this is the best video I have ever seen you put up just because of the amount of education and information thank you this is a horrible situation I hope that this beautiful animal gets better!!!
Thanks so much, Kenne is great and as brought so much to us all.
It’s sad that the tortoise is sick but it gave us lots of information cause I have 4 turtles and 2 tortoise
Admirable work Sam! Just donated, hope you can reach your goal to help HMS and other torts out there.
Thanks so much my friend.
Sam Pascucci $10 sent 👍

I've never heard of plant disease affect anything else except plants. If It was a Chemical that would make more sense.

Every bit helps thanks so much.
Sam Pascucci my pleasure Sam. Be sure to give us an update on HMS
Glad to see those who are stepping up to the plate on these issues and in finding a resolution.

Poor HMS . praying he gets better
Tracie Butcher same!
How did it work out for Sam's sweet tortoise? It made me cry to see him this way!!

Jacob Gardner ...what kind of materials..when you say production of some relatively toxic materials?

Poor guy- so sad to see him in this state. Just made a small contribution for Sam and HMS.
Thanks so much

Kamp Kenan Your channel is awesome! Can't believe you replied man :)
Kamp Kenan Your swimming with sharks video is so awesome
Damn. It'd be expensive as hell, but Standlee Hay Co. sells really clean hays and their customer service is top tier - but you pay for it... but If I had an old extremely costly tort, I'd definitely be looking into that being the main food source.
How is HMS doing now? Could we get an update on the status of his pneumonia?
I Didn’t want to in the beginning - I don’t want the animal to suffer more , but if they are trying so hard wanted to help them .
It looks magnificent
Bailed hay being stored in damp barns or cow barns is

Nick thanks for your feelings about HMS , I have had many such days sinc he has been sick.
but I wont give up on him.
Another great video my man!
I wonder about storing the hay in a room with a UV sterilizer? Could this kill the mold spores?
Dude why isn't kamp Kenan on the Discovery Channel. You belong on a bigger stage.
Every little bit helps this incredible tortoise.
Is there an update to this. I just recently saw this and I just bought a whole bag of Hay from Amazon and now i am afraid to give it to my sulcatta!! ACK!!
Awe that poor big boy
Hope it gets well
I just made a donation. I hope we can get an update on how HMS is doing. Pat
Fungus must be widespread in Florida
Any update?
That is good to know. I have 2 baby saulcata tortoises.
I just tried to donate to the GoFundMe but they shut it down for some reason... They're saying it's "paused." I know I'm YEARS after the vid but want to donate and can't
... oh no... what if.... 😟
excellent guys i had no idea till now
Beautiful giant tort
Just donated & shared 💚💚🐢🐢

what is HMS condition at this currently?
do you have a tortoise for Missouri out side
Poor guy. I hope he will completely recover one day. 😞🐢
Sad. Hope they caught it in time and the meds will help. Heading to Go Fund Me now.
HMS i donated get well soon please keep us updated Kenan
The fungus grows in the hay turning storage due to tempature and the amount of humidity in the air. It only happens in a few months of the year.
they are so nice..
I put hay in my desert tortoises burrow for winter. Can they get sick from hay? What else can I use for bedding?
Yes. Maybe coconut husk maybe better. But topsoil is the best bedding for tortoises as it's natural, retains moisture, and has good structural integrity. Coconut husk, sphagnum moss are quality substrates. Tortoises need 2-3 inches of bedding for burrowing.
i do that from Italy guy! keep going!
...Is this West Indian Lilac?
Hms looks so uncomfortable. All blotted , I feel so bad for him. I will pray for him 🙏🏼🙏🏼🐢
I hope sams tortoise gets better.
Yes ever year my older horse wood get the Sam thing after losing 2 older house . Hay gets moldy during the winter and the spring , Sumer and get a big barn so now i looks if it’s green n the middle don’t buy it
Has there been an update?
how is this animal doing today?
What A cool video you got there .
Hi, love the Herps / reptiles
This is very sad. $10 sent 👍.
Did HMS recover?
😔
Another great video, easily the best part was when he threw the bag and failed
i lovya Kenan but i cant help laugh watching him when someone else talks for more than 10 seconds, you can see he is straining to not but in,he is a definitely a talker more than a listener, and if somebody is telling a story too slow,or convoluted you can practically see him wanting to take over the story,i know this because im exactly the same, when youre a fast talker and even faster thinker "Luke Slow Talker's" can get you to pulling you hair out, see more proof but dam this guy is the King of Bush beaters, even a saint would be screaming "get to the point!!"
So sad
Wow, when he says 'it's a long story', he means Tolstoy Long. But that's what research means!
A pet youtuber on the channel, Emma Lynne Sampson, had her rabbits die from contaminated hay. She got it from a local farm.
so sad, its a bigger problem then we all realize.
Always great video who agrees
Where is the gofundme link???
Oh my god he is massive!
Poor HMS 🐢. Human fault that he is sick 😷
So, everytime your kids get sick you are the one to blame?
There are recalls all the time
If you look you will find alot of recalls could the bags get holes in. them did the manufactures switch from not GMO to GMO products?

Awwwwww po baby 😔😔
Will donate on next payday
Kenan please give us the name of that hay !! Or the distribution. Please , I’m very worried
we just buy it at a horse feed store I dont even know if it has a name, but ill check it out.
Sam Pascucci thanks 🙏
Does hms stand for something
Watch the video duuuuuuce
Duuuude:)
Lol I just watched it again I must have missed that part lol I hope the tortoise gets better and dosnt get sick anymore
I’ve never even heard of fungal pneumonia.... I hope he gets better.... he’s so cool to I hope he gets healthy again
He was named after Darwin's ship the HMS Beagle (Her Majesties Ship)
Poor baby, he just looks like he doesn't feel well.
Best of luck Sam.
Thanks so much

I now how you felt when you lost your turtle I recently lost my baby turtle but my turtle is dead. It just happened today.
Gotta give some love to Tom for the editing
Sooooo your friend with slinky's old girlfriend I'm now wondering if this is how she died.. Could it be possible her food caused it????
And guess what- I'm donating!
Poor HMS. I donated and shared on Facebook. Please, if you can't donate..share on social media
16k in medical bills... 😒.
(I'm a tortoise lover, but most humans don't get this type of medical care).
Hi how are you 🤣🤣
dame what kind of hay
Hey kenan when i searched your name on google kena Harkin on google there was a website called kenan harkin adress and phone number check it out that may be what happened to the fly river turtle
Could you all start a grow your own hay kinda deal?
