Brian is describing the Orthodox Church from minute 7:57. Thats the understanding that we have of the Holy Tradition and our role in transmitting it without changes from generation to generation for 2000 years. In the Orthodox Church we do not consider ourselves "traditional" because we have "old" customs or because we have a different architecture, but because we have maintained the understanding and teachings from Christ and His Apostles to this day. The cultural wealth that we have is only an addition or a positive consequence, but none of that defines us as Orthodox, it is the Faith without blemishes that was bequeathed to us from ancient past generations and protected by the Holy Spirit Who is the one who guards the Church and resides in her. If tomorrow our temples, books or even our icons are taken away, our Faith would remain the same, whether doing a liturgy on a rock or praying in the darkness of a cave away from civilization, our rock is Christ and only in Him we hope. Btw, nice Icons in the wall.

Sadly, though, the Orthodox have caved on divorce and don't accept the Filioque, which is absolutely ancient, patristic and orthodox.

    • @leonardito
      @leonardito 3 года назад +30

@@lorddevonshire6382 the Orthodox Church does not admit the origin of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son, but only from the Father. This is why the Orthodox Church rejects the addition of the "Filioque" in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Symbol. The Holy Spirit has not a double procession. The unilateral introduction by the Latin Church of the term Filioque was prior to the year 1054, that theory born from the West does not make it patristic and even worse in Orthodox, much older is the teaching of Christ that clearly explains the origin of the Holy Spirit from the Father, just as the Church confesses to this day, because not only the external mysteries, but also the most recondite divine mysteries were revealed by Christ and by the spirit of faith both to the holy apostles, as to all the Holy Church.
The Church does not reject the fact that the Holy Spirit is sent not only by the Father, but also by the Son, but the Church rejects the concept that the Holy Spirit had His original principle in the bosom of the Trinity himself: not only from the Father, but also from the Son. Those who have turned away from the Church of Christ and have been deprived of his grace, have lost the internal knowledge of the faith, and are only limited to superficial knowledge; that is why in Rome they can only know what is external, and not the divine internal mysteries. The Christian denominations that departed from the Holy Church can no longer confess (because they could not spiritually understand) the origin of the Holy Spirit only from the Father. They have tried to preserve the external aspect of the law, but lost the internal meaning and grace of God both in confession and in life.

Remarriage is also against God's will but remarrying one person is better than living a life of promiscuity. It would be best for a divorced person to be reunited with their spouse or remain celibate. Orthodoxy has the concept of oeconomia which recognizes that no one can live up to God's standards and so there are cases where second and even third (but never fourth) marriages can be blessed but not with the same honor as the first marriage.

Coming from a Protestant Southern Baptist background, really been struggling with the question of “who is the true Church of the first millennium?” Either EO or RC. Ultimately God has led me to Orthodoxy, and I’m a catechumen in the Greek Orthodox Church currently.
I see the teaching authority and importance the Bishop of Rome had in the early centuries but I think it’s obvious that it was a “primacy” and not a “supremacy” over other Bishops/churches.
I think the Bishop of Rome was highly respected for Peter & Paul both being martyred there, that seat was highly revered because of the two apostles. But as the Latin church developed into theological territory that churches east of Rome did not recognize it became it’s own ‘thing’ essentially over time until we had a full blown schism.
I realize the idea of the papal office works very well in theory & sounds nice and unifying but I truly don’t see it working that way in practice & I believe if such an authoritative, vital position would exist based out of Rome that it would’ve been much clearer to see it in the early centuries, the ecumenical councils, and in scripture.
Nonetheless I pray for the Roman Catholic Church, & especially for its traditional members. I know this has to be a difficult time for you all. Just simply wanting a liturgy that gives reverence to God & bishops that call sin, sin seems increasingly more difficult to find in the world as a whole, not just any single church. God bless

Coming from a "FSSP" background of a "RCC" background, really can honestly say neither the "RCC" nor the "GOC" can possibly be the Church. The "RCC" apostatized into scholasticism which it calls "Thomism". The "GOC" apostatized in hesychasm which it calls "Palamism". We MediEval SedeVacantIsts beat the modern SedeVacantIsts to it. We've been at it eversince the Franks set up the AntiPapacy in 1054. They're only been at it eversince 1958.
God gave the Keys of Heaven to ArchApostle Saint Peter and his Successors the Popes who (together with Œcumenical Synods which were Ratified by them) alone had Ordinary and ExtraOrdinary Magisterium and the Power to bind and loose to all 12 Apostles and their Successors the Episcops they ConSecrate and the Power to adMinister CommUnion, hear ConFessions, and give Last Rites to the SacerDotes they Ordain. Pope Saint CleMent used his Magisterium to settle disputes in Corinth while EvAngelIst Apostle Saint John was still alive and much closer to Corinth. Pope Saint Victor threatened to exCommUnicate people over disputes over when to celebrate Pascha. Pope Saint Cornelius restricted the Power of exorcism to Canonically ComMissioned SacerDotes (when available). Pope Saint Sylvester told Imperator Saint ConStantinus I the Great to call and preside over then sent 2 Legates to Ratify the 1st Œcumenical Synod of Nicæa. Imperator Saint ConStantinus I the Great rebuilt then moved to Byzantium. The Donation of ConStantinus is of Canon Law. Popes Saints Damasus, Siricius, and Innocent Canonized the Sacred Books. Pope Saint Siricius sent a Dogmatic Epistle in which he debunked "Baptisms of blood/desire". The heretic John Chrysostom appealed to Pope Saint Innocent for Justice to refute false accusations against him of Origenism but he was a heretic for his false accusations against the TheoTokos of sin specifically pride. Pope Saint Celestinus in his Dogmatic Epistle to the apostate AntiPatriArchEpiscop John of AntiOch at the Œcumenical Synod of Ephesus commended layman-to-be-Episcop Saint Eusebius of DoryLæum who denounced the apostate Nestorius an apostate AntiEpiscop with no prior existing DeClaration. Pope Saint Leo I the Great was Titled PatriArchEpiscop of the CathOlIc Church at the Œcumenical Synod of Chalcedon. The Franks and Germanics were at war again the Church and eventually became false "converts". The Byzantine Imperators started to meddle into Ecclesiastical affairs without the Popes' permission. Most of the East became cæsaroantipapists so the Eastern Sees were left permanently Vacant.
There is a difference between not clearly seeing something versus looking the other way because you don't like it.
Neither the "RCC" nor the "GOC" has any hope left. We Eastern SedeVacantIsts beat the Western SedeVacantIsts to it. We've been at it eversince the Franks set up the AntiPapacy in 1054. They're only been at it eversince 1958.

Exactly your spot on, the main reason is the Eucharist and praying for the Pope and the Church itself to be free from deception that always continuously attacks the Catholic Church and their followers but if you raise the kids right and to the know difference then they shouldn’t be deceived even when they’re continuously attacked. God will always protect his True Church but it’s clear that there are a lot of wolves in the Catholic Church but that just reconfirms that the Catholic Church is the True Church of Christ cause it’s always forever today and even through out history always being attacked. And the Attacks are getting extremely strong cause the Devil knows he has little time left to deceive the Catholics before Jesus comes back, so the Devil is like in full force now in trying to tear people away from the Truth, you have to pray daily Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet, I pray it Twice a day and I still think I need to pray it more as sometimes the attacks are sooo strong but cause I’m weary of these attacks and know it’s the Devils duty to do it then I just hold on, but yeah there are days when I feel weaker then other days but I just prY anyhow and then I feel rejuvenated about it all and just continue doing my daily things. Then I see blessings come my way and that’s how I know I’m definitely doing the right thing. GodBless I just wanted to share and encourage you and others that may read this. 🙏❤️🙏

I left the Roman church a year ago for Holy Orthodoxy. No one poached me. I simply wanted what had been promised me when I entered the Roman church. I love my RCC friends, but the Roman church is deficient in upholding tradition, reverent worship, and the promises of the papacy for being a centering force are sorely lacking. There’s more to it all, of course. Our little mission parish has seen several Catholics come visit over the last couple weeks. We’re not poaching. We’re offering the True Faith.

I think Brian, you hit on a really important point that is everywhere in our modern world: Personal preference is king. "You do you" or "Your truth". When I converted to Catholicism in 2018, my family thought of it like it was a new hobby that I liked. "Oh well she used to do martial arts and then she switched to ballroom dancing....now she's being Catholic. She'll get tired of that eventually and then she'll do something else." The idea that something is true doesn't often enter people's minds. Everything is relative, everything is based on what you like most, and whatever works for you, you should do. And in this video you are pointing out that even Christians don't realize that they are doing this. We are all very affected by the culture we live in.

It was filled with families and reverence. It was the most Catholic Mass I've been to.
I understand those who say they are remaining Catholic, I am too, but what I cannot do is continue to submit to the Vatican as the Church. Why is it impossible that it is not the SSPX that "left" the Church, when they are the ones who maintained the tradition and Mass of the Saints? Why is it impossible that it is those men (who are NOT God or infallible) who put Vatican II in place, turning our liturgy into a Protestant meeting and our many of our most sacred beliefs into superstition, the ones who "left" the Church behind? I cannot believe that our Lord meant for us to fall into the mass sin and heresy that the Vatican and its possessors are promoting as "True Catholicism". I can't believe that I fall into greater sin by attending an SSPX Mass, than by attending an LGBTQ "Mass", complete with rainbow flags rather than Crucifixes over the altar.
When the Alta Vendita was uncovered, and the plans to infiltrate the Church revealed, we knew that there were already evil men in the Church. It has become clear that they're plans have come to fruition and they have had control of the physical church for decades now. How does one continue to say that following the pope is the Catholic thing to do, when that pope has torn apart its foundations? When he has brought a pagan Pachamama to be worshipped in St. Peter's itself?
Some of us are asking the wrong question. It isn't whether we want to leave the Church, it is where IS the True Catholic Church today? I will ALWAYS be Catholic.

This situation arose because at one time the only the church could legalise marriages, there being no such thing as civil marriage. Consequently it was marrying people who were Christian in name only. It was therefore considered unreasonable to bind people who were in truth not Christians. In reality, this is always the case with church marriages; the Christian committment of the parties to the marriage are often no more than nominal. The principle of _economia_ is applied so as not to force people into obeying a set of conditions to which they do not really assent. The Orthodox church does not approve of divorce and has developed a pastoral approach which makes this clear.

Your argument against Orthodoxy makes absolutely no sense. First of all, the successors of Antioch and Alexandria still exist until today. Second of all, there’s no hindrance to evangelical work. Third of all, the argument is there is no need for a central human figure in the universal church because that NEVER existed, at the very least in the East. I would recommend reading Laurent Cleenewerck’s “His Broken Body”. It’s eye-opening, and the ecclesiology presented that has not changed is in Orthodoxy. Unfortunately it’s Rome that changed ecclesiological principles, and that’s not even a development, that’s a flat out change.
I respect your traditional values, and I’m not poaching you either. In fact, I have nothing but respect to the Catholic Church and its spirituality. But I’m not convinced Papal supremacy is “orthodox” let alone “dogma”. And I’m just surprised at your arguments as they usually have foundation, but not in this case.

@Brian Farley I do have Upon This Rock. I don’t think I have Pope Peter, so thank you for these recommendations. I will add it to my reading list :)
The word “Pope” simple means Father. It was first used for the archbishop of Alexandria before being used for the archbishop of Rome. To “practice papacy” is to practice spiritual leadership and fatherhood, which all archbishops have. The word “Pope” is a title of endearment and honor, not a dogmatic title over the whole Catholic Church from an Orthodox perspective. Rome was not the only bishop that received hyperbolic praise and honor. But every archbishopric had their jurisdiction, every archbishopric had their struggles, every archbishopric has their flaws, and by the grace of Christ, they’re still here, but Rome seems to have been the only archbishop that took what was hyperbolic praise and acclaim into dogma (and now recently even Constantinople is dabbling into similar ideas).

@Brian Farley thank you brother! I appreciate your respect.
I just want to reiterate how much I have love and respect for the Roman Catholic Church. I’m a fan of this channel and of Bishop Robert Barron. I see a lot of my own church’s doctrines and concerns shared in these channels despite other dogmatic disagreements. I see the Pope as the successor of St. Peter and Paul as well, and I believe you have valid sacraments. I do get very happy when someone comes from whatever background to join any of the Apostolic churches (RC, EO, or OO). I hope our bishops can continue to have discussions together without poaching or disrespect and to be able to understand one another fully.

Orthodoxy is not upholding tradition better. Tradition isn't just old stuff that you like. Tradition starts with apostolic succession, outside of it you can't have tradition (at least christian tradition). Outside of the Church all you'll do is speak old languages and read old books. We want the Church to do more of that again, but we can't separate from it.

If you choose to go to an orthodox community in detriment of a catholic one than you're committing schism and you're not in communion, thus not receiving valid sacraments. This would be like saying you don't need the Church because you can have spiritual communion.

We are definitely in a time of weakness now. The "current state of the Church" has nothing to do with what the Church teaches, no matter how few people are able to follow those teachings which are the ultimate truth. Eastern Orthodoxy is attractive only because it is smaller (so it's not Satan's biggest enemy) and it doesn't get attacked as much. But it has its share of problems too.

Alaska, Japan and other nations were missionized by Russian Orthodox missionary saints like St Herman and St. Innocent. Russia itself was the fruit of Greek Orthodox missionaries and the linguistic efforts of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

    • @luizfelipe5399
      @luizfelipe5399 3 года назад +2

      1) St. Cyril and St. Methodius are Catholic because they are pre-schism.
      2) Catholic missionaries (like Francis Xavier) reached Japan in the 16th century; they evangelized it until it became ilegal to be a Christian in Japan and more than 400 Catholics were martyrized there (search "Martyrs of Japan"). Note that Japan was never a Portuguese territory to begin with, however Catholic missions were there anyway. Only in the 19th century the Russian Orthodox arrived to Northern Japan, as they were taking territory from Japan like Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.
      3) Russian Orthodox missionaries came to the Alaska only after it was already Russian territory and only in the turning of the 19th century. Catholic missionaries have been evangelizing in the Americas 4 centuries earlier than that, that is why most countries in the Americas are Catholic today.
When Orthodox get out of their territory, things get messy. They don't all recognize each other. The same city can have two different Orthodox bishops, sometimes in mutual schism between them, sometimes alledgedly part of the same "Orthodox Church" but claiming the same authority over the same population.

23:46 That is quite big misunderstanding of the Orthodox Church. It would be advisable to form Your opinion on Orthodox Church going from how Orthodox Church sees itself and not from Catholic explanations of what Orthodox Church teaches. Often times the two are very off. Think of it this way. Let's say I wanted to get to know You, but I'm not asking yourself about You, instead I ask one of the people who already knows You, or thinks he knows and then form my opinions about You on that. Would that be just, or would You prefer that I would get to know You from your own words and deeds?
National Churches is not how Orthodox sees itself. This is an outside view. All canonical Orthodox Churches are in communion by One Holy Eucharist, Body and Blood of Christ. It is more about administration here. So called "National" names in some of the Orthodox Churches do not mean that You have to be of that nationality, instead they just tell us of where the administrative centre is. Theology is one, dogma is one, practices differ a little bit (but so do in Catholic Church), and more important than all that - it is about One Eucharist, One Christ, One Blood and One Body.
"Nationalism" is even condemned by the Orthodox in 19. century as the heresy of ethnophiletism. If You have time and are willing, look it up.

😂 LOL! Groups from Eastern Orthodox and SSPX are both lined up trying to poach people heading into a church immediately following the Pope's letter. Amazing that they mobilized so quickly! Equally amazing that they worked so well together for different causes. Also amazing that they weren't at mass themselves and spent the morning loitering at a conciliar church. This is laughable BS and just sad and desperate really. He's comparing Traditional Catholics who embrace the sacred magisterium and traditions of the Church to protestants like Luther who reject the magisterium and traditions of the church. Luther said if you destroy the Mass, you destroy the church, and he was correct. Luther encouraged tables at a Eucharistic Celebration instead of alters at an Eternal Sacrifice. Early protestant leaders encouraged people to receive Communion on the hand while standing instead of kneeling because they didn't believe in the real presence of Our Lord in the Sacred Host.
Traditional Masses are overflowing while diocesan masses are almost vacant. Guess what, SSPX doesn't have to recruit they have more family's than their churches can hold with 3-4 Masses per Sunday. They can build new churches and schools fast enough to keep up with the demand.
This is a gross video and an obvious misrepresentation of truth.

Also, kinda a dumb comment, why would we need ecumenical councils (even though we do have synods) when there is not an issue for one lol? what issues of faith and morals are in flux that we need a council for lol? Need i remind you of your own church's faith and morals issues with uh i dont know, with James Martin being affirmed and blessed for LGBTQ ministries, Mahoney being praised, the amazon synod, the ecumenist prayer gatherings on the ziggurat, the Assisi gatherings, the fact that 70% or more of RCs dont believe in the real presence, and need i remind you that you have several factions / sects of Catholicism who fundamentally disagree with eachother and Rome itself (that alone ends the debate lol) while we Orthodox have the same united faith but different jurisdictions to prevent a Pope Francis situation according to the apostolic passing down?
Saying "leaderless" sums up the debate. Christ is the head. Have you heard of him? The fact that councils were passed for hundreds of years without Romes approval in the 1st millennium kinda shows you dont need Rome for that doesnt it? So, as a reality check, the way you are feeling right now is how the synagogues and the Pharisees felt about the early Jesus followers. Also, you are missing the point if you think this is all about liking the Mass or something like that. The Pope is making a very clear example of the points the Eastern Orthodox have been expressing from the Schism.
There are big Traditions, those that Christ personally taught, and little traditions that men have added. The last few Popes have been messing with the structure and content of the big Traditions, which indicates they believe they are above Jesus. If this doesn't give you a crisis of faith in the Pope, are you really paying attention? (The Mass as expressed in whatever spoken language is fine, and there will be others that are what you think, but the changes of the content are the major problem.)
This is the reason I am not becoming Catholic, having been looking into joining. The structure of the Roman Catholic Church doesn't allow for correction, due to the notion of infallibility.
It's really telling you are describing all your examples in worldly ways, and not looking at the spiritual implications.
The spiritual way of looking at it is not a position of strength or weakness, but rather is the harvest ready. Again, this is exactly how Christianity started, and how Christ described the way the world works.

It was a long time coming and it wasn't so much one side break ing away from the other but both sides breaking apart from each other. I can say that the attraction to the Orthodox Churches is a liturgy that has held fast to the original.meaning of worship. Everything in an Orthodox Church points toward the fact that it is where heaven and earth meet. The Western Church got more involved with modernist tendencies in worship and architecture but the big issue was when the Western Church started making decisions outside the conciliar nature of the original church.

I relate very much to what you saying about truth being the most important. When I was first looking into more traditional forms of the faith, I was impressed by so many liturgies. But once I realized that the Catholic Church was true, even though I found the Novus Ordo liturgy disappointing, I knew that I had to attend mass. But I am grateful that God showed me a traditional mass community in my local area. But if that went away, I could not switch to a schismatic sect simply because of a preference for traditional liturgy.

The care for actual legitimacy is the actual main reason for most conversions.
      Ask the actual converts.
Ask the many priests that converted after serious theologian research, like Father Aristibule Adams or Father Spyridon Bailey.
It has nothing to do with feelings or comfort.
Father Aristibule Adams had been assigned by the Vatican to produce arguments against the Orthodox Church. After 11 years of dilligent research - he found a huge number of Roman Catholic forgeries and he converted to the Orthodox Church for legitimacy reasons. Legitimacy.
