  • As players get to higher levels, we want to make sure all players have the necessary skills to be used in special team situations. In order to be one of the D men who is used on the Penalty Kill there is a certain set of skills you need to have and be able to execute under pressure.
Skating - The ability to skate backwards effectively, understand gap control, stand up at the blue line, close spaces quickly
Stick Handling - limit stick handling but handle the puck with composure, make good decisions, don’t panic under pressure
Passing and Pass Receiving - Short support passes, partner support passes, stretch passes
Shooting - Hard clears through slap shots and wrist shots, ability to find open spots, ability to elevate puck, learn angle, rim the puck hard
Special Skills - COMMUNICATION, Shot Blocking, Hand Eye, Face-Off Awareness, Stick Position
Your job is to understand what the other team is trying to do and who are the most dangerous players on the ice. The goal of this would be to take away the most dangerous options and make the other team settle for lower percentage shots. You have to learn to work together as a unit to increase your chances at success. This comes up in situations like changing at the right times, pressuring together, collapsing together and being on the same page as everyone else. Your coach will come up with the structure for your group and you need to use your skills within that structure.
