Hi Everyone, this video compares grass pottys to puppy pads. I hope this gives you information to make a choice as to what is best for you and your dog. I will be doing a review in 2 weeks . Indoor Grass Potty DoggieLawn vs Fresh Patch. Both are ordered. Watch for this video coming soon. Please subscribe to be sure you receive all the videos . Thank you. Joyce Diamond Dog Training.
I didn't have the money when I got my puppy to buy puppy pads so I took an outside picnic table cover. I cut it up into four pieces and it works great. I Rinse it off in the shower with a sprayer and then toss it in the wash. Before I used it though I sewed the edges that I cut So it wouldn't fray in the wash.
I appreicate you sharing your personal experiences with these. Too often these channels makes suggestions and don't have a clue what the real life experiences are. Great job!
How often do you wash each pad. How many pads do you have. I use the paper pads. My girls do not like to owe on a soiled pad. I think I would here to be washing pads every day. People want me to do a video on the washable pad. I need more information from a person who likes the washable pads and uses them for your dog. Can you give me some information so I am better prepared to film this video? What type of dog do you have. What size. Do you live in an apartment or house. How often do your dogs pee on the washable pads. During the day, only at night. Do your dogs go outside to pee and poop or are they inside only. I really appreciate your help so I can make this video. Thank you. Joyce
As she didnt answer you. I took a waterproof bed cover from ikea that i cut into pieces that are washable. I also tried small towels. The puppypads are easy but it will cost more maybe than to wash them @@DiamondDogTraining
@@EmmTalk thank you for answering. Yes, the cost of the paper pads and the fact they are not recyclable is my concern . But the frequent washing of the IKEA pads and the wear and tear on my old washer are a concern as well. But I think my main drawback to using washable pads is confusing my girls when I am asking them to pee on material that looks like a towel or something that may be in the floor. They are 100% using the paper pads and I am afraid to cause a problem. The only time Beezie peed on the carpet was when I was filming the video on using real grass and I picked up the papers and only had the real grass mat on the floor for 2 weeks. It was a disaster. Beezie was so confused. So I will continue using the paper pads for now. I am glad you have found the perfect solution for your dog. Thank you . Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining when u say paper pads, is that the same as thos puppy pads plastic type ? I am actually using both, but I think the puppy pads ones are easier to just throw away rather than to wash when travelling also Thanks for the answer/greetz fr. Sweden
I just bought used AstroTurf from restore and cut it to fit the size of pee pad holder That I have. I just rinse them every other day in the tub with a little baking soda and Odoban. I have an outdoor and an indoor clothes line so depending on the weather I also just hang them to air dry and let air circulate around them. Out of one $20 huge piece, I have about 25 pee pads that might well last me the life of the three chihuahuas. I inherited them after my brother's passing, and because I'm environmental, I did not want to continue using the white pee pads. So between them being trained to go back outside and for when I'm not there having a back plan available, we're doing really well. I do have to occasionally snip loose ends that form along the edges. But I also find running a lighter or a match along it helps to rebond the edges for at least a couple times. But if you do that, do it outside. Probably not healthy in an enclosed space. Not saying you have to do that, just an idea. If they're washed gently, I find it lasts quite well.
I have used absorbent cleaning towels on a water proof tray which was custom made. I also have a very small front loader just for these towels. Well the initial cost including the second hand washer was about $250 at 2015 but overall I think it was all worth it for two small dogs. I personally dislike using disposable pads as they you know....
i am so glad the video gave you the information you needed. What did you decide? Pee pads paper or reusable, Porch Potty or Fesh Patch or Doggie Lawn. Just curious if you can tell me. i am always looking for topics for my videos which people want and find helpful. Thank you. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining Hi Joyce !!! Ill be training the puppies with the regular pee pads and the pee pad holder 💕 Thank you again so much for the video !
Hi Joyce! I just stumbled upon your video, and had to subscribe. Thank you for the info! I’ve decided to use pee pads for my 9.5 week Yorkie. She is adapting well to them. I learned from another RUclipsr, that when the dog is confined in an area, to be sure it is just large enough for her bed, her food and water, and her pee pad holder with pee pad. I started doing that, and it works great! She is learning what the pee pad holder is for, and that she sleeps in her bed, and uses the pee pad for her pee and poo. I love watching the little wheels in her brain turning as she jumps from her bed to the pee pad, and then back into her bed. In another three weeks, I will remove the pee pad holder from the confinement pen, and move it to the area in the bathroom where it will remain. At that time, I will begin serious potty training, but she will have already learned what the pee pad and holder are for. I look forward to more videos from you.
I'm using fabric pee pads and love them for my chihuahua. I just lay one on top of rubber nonslip bath mat on the bathroom floor. I pick up the poop and flush asap. After a day or two I rinse it good on the shower floor with the shower head, squirt a couple sprays of Odo-B-Gone on it then hang over a bar to drip dry. When I have a pile of the drip dried pads I wash and dry them in the machine. I have NEVER had an unpleasant smell from this system. My only question is which fabric pads are best and why. Right now I'm leaning towards the brand Poochpads.
Hi Dixie, Thank you for all the information. Your system sounds great. i have a question please. My girls do not like to pee on a soiled pad. They will dig up the soiled pad and move it to the side. Will your Chihuahua reuse the fabric pee pad after your dog has peed on it. Or do you change the fabric paid each time. What size pad do you buy. i do not even know if I ordered the right pad. i would appreciate your opinion. i have had requests to do a video comparing disposable pads to washable pads. With your help, I may have enough information to do the video. would you be willing to take video of your chihuahua peeing on the washable pad. Also video of the clean pad on the floor. I just looked at Poochpads. They look to be a good quality. i will do a lot more research to do the video comparing the disposable pads to washable pads. The pack I ordered for the video was a 4 pack 30x34 under pads, pet pads. honestly you have more knowledge of the pads than I do. Is that a good pad to use? i was hesitant to change my dogs to the reusable pads and upset their schedule. They are so good to use the disposable pee pads. I was afraid they would start peeing on the carpet. do you have any problem with your dog getting confused. Sorry for all the questions. i would like to do a comparison but did not want change my dogs schedule. if you will send me pictures to use and give me your experience, i can do the video. Thank you, Joyce
SARDS had taken my dogs sight. She is indoor trained. She used to go downstairs to go potty. Now blind she won't go down the stairs... So puppy pads are a must at night!!! Looking for an alternative... Pads are pretty costly and since "pandemic". They are hard to find....
Cynthia, i am sorry, Is your dog a large or small size? I think this would make a difference. If she cannot go down the stairs, it sounds like she is too big to carry. Can you make a ramp for her to walk up and down? Just a thought. You can either use the washable pee pads or the articficial or real grass. Check out my videos on Indoor Potty Training. If your dog is large, you will have to replace the grass frequently and wash the pads a lot. Do you have a balcony or side portch on that level or an extra bathroom with a walk in shower. Pleae let me know your layout for your house and maybe I can help you find a place to use. Thank you. Joyce
I'd love to see a comparison on the washable pads vs disposable. I use disposable now and love it but they do get expensive and adds to trash. By the way this review helped me alot I was considering buying the artificial grass for our new puppy. Thank you very much
Me too. Other people have asked me to do a video comparing the two. I don’t like using the pads because of the environment. But my dogs have never used washable pads and I am afraid of creating problems with my dogs potty habits. They are 100% potty trained to pads. Do you have questions and suggestions to include in a video. I also have a very old washer and think washing to pads so often will cause me problems. Well there I think I just did a video. Love to have your input. Thank you so much for the comment. Joyce
@DiamondDogTraining and then you get into what should I use for detergent so it doesn't harm or affect my dog in any way 🤔 We just recently bought the fake grass. I hate it. My puppy tries to tear the grass out. It's a pain spraying it off Clean and STINKS if you don't. I agree with all you mentioned, but I feel there are times you just can't replace certain items, and in this case, yes, it's disposable puppy pads
LOVED how detailed but short you explained all the options!! Need to start doing pads for a an older large service dog to use on the plane 😬 any suggestions for air travel with service dogs are welcome!! Thank you so much for a very informative video 💚
Alfalfa pellets in a tray. It can be messy but it has a natural grass smell where they attract the puppy. Makes transitioning to potty outside very easy. Essentially its a dog litter.
Thank you. I don’t think I can use a fabric pad. The idea of cleaning it in the shower or sink after it’s been used bothers me, But definitely more open disposable pads now.
Hi, I actually agree with you. I use the disposable pads. For me they work the best. I just think rinsing the washable pads and washing them every time my dog pees on them is more work than changing the disposable pads. My dogs do not like to pee on a used pad. So when they peed on a washable pad , I would be washing them all the time. The one drawback is the disposable pads are not recyclable. That bothers me. Thank you for your opinion. Joyce
I walk my dogs forty mintunes every day twice a day and she usally dosent need puppy pads but like you said if my moms at work and my service dog can hold it for long periods of time but can’t hold it forever but the puppy pads help especailly at night after dusk because of the owls cyotes hawks bobcats and more
His is a hard video for me to make. My dogs don’t use the cloth pads. I have been asked before to make this video. I will see what I can do. Thank you . Joyce
I'm so extremely done with the pee pads smell already only thing I like is the ease of picking them up and tossing them out so I've been curious about the washable one's but I wouldn't put those in my washer regardless if I sanitize my washer afterwards. I mean when my children would have accidents in there pants I'd rinse them out and preclean with soap hand dry if I shared a washer and dryer then once I was going to wash I'd throw those in but they are preclean so I figured I'd do that with the washable ones. I have yet to buy them😅 I'm curious how many times my small dog can use the restroom on them before needing to be replaced. With pee pads it's 3/4x max. Then I'm curious to know if the smell would hit you all at once if you were to hand wash them. There should be a doggy laundry company where every week or 2weeks you place the bag filled with dirty pads outside and receive some fresh pads that way the only thing you'd need to do is place the used ones in a smell proof bag to be picked up and washed for you 😊 if only!
Great idea. I would consider using the washable pads if there ever was a doggy laundry😊. Seriously I can’t get past the fact of putting the soiled pads in the washer every couple days. My girls only use a pee pad a couple times before I must pick it up and throw away. The number of washable pads I would need and the number of loads of wash just does not seem feasible to me. One person wrote she bought a used washer just for the pads. Maybe that is a. Option for you . It is not for me. I put a mask on when I am picking up the soiled paper pads and always wear a mask when I take them out of the closed garbage can and take them outside to the garbage can. I found the odor is much less. I gate the idea the paper pads are not recyclable. If you have a solution which works for you, please let me know. I a. Sure there are many people who are in the same dilemma. Thank you so much for your comment. Joyce
Thank you! Ever since I moved back to Atlanta, my dogs hold their poop until they get back inside. They were so use to pooping by the water it’s the only place where they’ll go right away.
I am sure it is confusing for your dogs. Be patient. The first time your dog poops outside, have a party. Lots of treats and praise and love. Train like your dogs are puppies. Gates to block the rooms so they have small area of house.can you explain more what you mean by “ they were so used to pooping by the water”. Maybe I can give you more suggestions. Also tell me sizes and ages and breeds of your dogs. That might help me. Thank you Joyce
We are hand raising 4 puppies since the mother is too sick to feed them. We have been using the disposable puppy pads since they were 2.5 weeks old and opened their eyes. Too young? Maybe but our little 300 gram babies have been using them since I wrapped one over a piece of fake grass (did this to help the puppy pad feel soft on their fragile little paws). They miss quite regularly and pee half on and half off the pad. They think if their front paws are on the pad that they got it. We couldn’t believe it worked when they were so young but it did. We do still have the occasional accident in their bed but overall 85-90% of the time they get up and go to the pad, it’s just a matter of changing the pad regularly but the blanket only once or (if one wets the bed) twice a day. Thanks for this video I was looking at getting fake lawn in the box but with four of them going on and off all day (their bladders only hold about an eyedropper full at a time) but I think it would get smelly very quickly and we would need about 3 of them to give them time to dry between washes as they go so often. We can’t let them get wet at this point so the lawn would have to be dry.
I read that about a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide in with laundry kills pee odor. I have washable pee pads and find the peroxide seems to do the trick.
@@DiamondDogTraining no it doesn't. I got my pee pads on Amazon. Forget the name of brand but the pads have drawings of dog bones and other doggie things with a white base. I'm just after soaking a used one in warm water with about 1/2 cup of soda. Got that tip from u I think. Cheers!
Hi Sharon, do you use cloth pads for your dog. I could really use help from a person who likes using cloth reusable pads. I only use paper disposable pads. Thank you. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining what do you recommend for a harness to attach a leash to I bought a harness for a chiwawa but it slips right off of him he is only 4 months old. I walk him with his collar and a leash attached but the metal part on the leash seems to touch his eyes I'm wandering if a harness for a cat would work on him haha. My puppy has not ate any dog food since I got him at 4 months he eats boiled chicken salmon pumpkin vegitables and a little fruit he has had a little lobster and shrimp as well he's my favorite puppy in the whole world he walks right next to me when I walk him and sleeps in the bed as well lol
Hi Mason, yes, a cat harness is a great idea. When your puppy stops growing, you can invest in a nice dog harness. The video coming out tomorrow reviews 4 no pull harnesses. Sounds like you are in love with your puppy. That is great. Try to make sure your puppy gets a balanced diet. There are diets that are cooked food and vegetables and vitamins. Farmers Dog is one company. There are others. I feed my dogs a raw food diet. Let me know how you are doing. Joyce
Are you using either of the pads, disposable or washable. Really appreciate your input in the video. I use the disposable pads. Have never used the washable pads. But I could do a video for you. Any help or suggestions for what you want me to cover in the video. Thanks Joyce
Thank you for your comment. I hope more people find my channel. I really enjoy making these videos and helping people with their dogs. Do you have any questions? Any topic you would like to see in a video. Can you tell me about your dog.
Diamond Dog Training we have a now 13 week red doberman puppy that nips ...a lot. Trying a few of your techniques. We are at the cottage but heading home soon and will get a kong. She’s a smart pup but trying to dominate kids (eg herding them: nipping at their knees/ankles). This behaviour is making it hard to have my son make a real connection with her. It’s definitely a process
Hi, nipping at this age is hard for a child to understand. They want to play with their puppy. How old is your son. Filled stuffed Kongs will help. No Hide made by Earth Animal will also help. Exercise but not overly tired. Age of your son will help give more suggestions.
Diamond Dog Training he’s 10. And there are things we are working on with him too. He makes it tough for a puppy not to nip him with his playing. Redirection and treats are what we are working on - or no play for a few minutes
Which do you like for your dog. Or how do you use both. I found the fake and real grass more work and my dogs did not like the grass. Curious to hear your reply. you may be able to give me some good suggestions to make a video to help people. Thank you for your comment. Joyce
Yes, I agree . To not have to go outside at night is a matter of safety and convenience. Thank you . Which potty pads do you find work best. I have been using Kirkland. Larger and more absorbent than any others I have used before . And less expensive .
I’m getting a new puppy in a few days. My plan is to use the washable potty pads under artificial grass. I will have one just inside the door in case she needs it when I’m away, one just outside the door on the covered deck so no rain or snow issues and a large piece the length of the deck at the bottom of the straits. It will be fenced in so she has more freedom and it will drain onto the gravel underneath it and I can hose it down when needed. All areas are the same artificial grass that hopefully she will recognize if we are somewhere with real grass available. What do you think?
@@DiamondDogTraining well it sounded like a good idea at the time. About 80% of the time she poops on the mats but 100% of the time she pees elsewhere. I put her on the mat after waking or other logical times. She runs right off it and pees somewhere else, sometimes only inches from the mat. It is getting pretty frustrating. Sometimes she is on the mat, starts to pee and as soon as I look at her she runs off and pees where I can’t see her. I just don’t understand.
@@sherryleggett1612 hi Sherry, have you made the area of grass enclosed so she cannot leave the area until she pees. You could use sections of a plastic puppy pen to block her on the grass. Or put the grass inside a puppy pen and close the door . It sounds like your puppy has an open area to keep and we need to confine her more. Or you can keep a harness and leash on her and walk her to the grass area and stay with her holding the leash until she pees or poops. Then give a treat and have a party. Let me know how you are doing. It takes time and patience and always reward with a treat for potty. Hope this helps. Thank you . Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining I have a shiba inu puppy coming in 40 days! Will use training pad with holder for now. 😃 I do not have a large sink or hose to wash the fake grass... Have been watching many of your other puppy preparation videos! Thanks for making them! One small suggestion, would it be easy to do a higher resolution than 360p? It will help to read the size text of some items’ package you shown.
I agree with you about using the potty pads over grass. If you have any other questions before your puppy comes. Please ask me. Thank you for the suggestion. I will look into what you have suggested. Not sure how to do this but I am sure someone can explain this to me . Joyce
I love your idea regarding indoor potty training. I wasn't too much of a grass person because the whole rinsing out was too much for me and my dog would eat the one with the real grass. He actually does well with potty pads and I used them for a long time that is until I wanted to get something more biodegradable. You might find this nutty but what I did was that I put kraft paper I have lots from deliveries...on top of this indoor potty the crate part and put cardboard inside the drainage area. Yes it is a bit to clean....but not too much if you have the right system. I was thinking about the environment so this is what worked best for me.
Soon I will like to show you my Austin Powers....doggy private bathroom I made my my dear Charlie boy....my Goldendor baby 90lb baby. It works perfectly.
i really feel the same way. When I am picking up the soiled pee pads, i regret they are not biodegradable. i also want to think about the environment. i would love to know more about you doggy private bathroom. Thank you, Joyce
Hi , I really don’t use the washable pads. I found when I thought about using them, I would be washing them all the time because my girls do not like to pee on souled pee pads . They always look for a clean pad. Just my personal situation.
Thanks for the advice i was thinking of a fake grass but iam having a newborn soon and i think the cleaning will be too much ill go with a potty pad and a tray holder
i am glad i helped you make your decision. Congratulations on your soon to be newborn. Have you watched my video How to Prepare for a New Baby. Maybe this will give you some ideas how to prepare your dog and introduce your new baby. If you have any questions, please ask me. What breed of dog do you have. This video is based on a workshop I used to give to expectant parents a few times during the year. ruclips.net/video/D-eN8fplL4M/видео.html
Yes, that can be a problem. I found the best solution for my dogs is to use the paper pads in a holder and praise and give treat and have a party every time she pees or poops on the pad. Let me know how you are doing. Maybe restricting your puppy to a smaller area with no rugs until you are making more progress. Pick up throw rugs . I find the silly praise for the odd and poop in the correct spot is what convinces my girls to always pee in the area where I have the pee pads. Hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing .
I just recently got a miniature schnauzer pup and set up a potty pad area for him it is hit or miss for a start but can see he is getting used to it and starting to go to it himself however I do find I have the problem of him only wanting to use it to pee. Once done and he feels he still needs to poo he goes to find another spot in my apartment which obviously doesn't have the pads. Any suggestions on how to get the puppy to do both on the pads?
Thank you for your comment. Peeing is easier for some puppies because they go to the pad and pee. Poo frequently means a puppy needs to move around. Try fencing an area with a puppy pen or gate and putting down many more pee pads I a large area. Your puppy will choose the area he likes to poo and you can decrease the area of the pads. Try to not let him move out of that area unless he is finished. You can also put a leash on your puppy and attach the leash to you for 20 minutes and then take him back to the area. Hope this helps . Joyce
Thanks for the information. I don't understand why you laid so many puppy pads on top of the puppy pad holder. Is it necessary to lay so many pads on top of one another?
good question. When i put the pads in the pad holder and clip the sides, i find it easier to lay more pads on top that I can easily remove the soiled pads without unclipping the sides of the tray. My girls do not tear or chew at the pads so it works best for me. What pads do you use. i waiver between paper pads that are not recyclable and maybe trying washable whelping pads. i just worry about the continual washing and the water and an old washing machine. Thank you, Joyce
yes, some males lift their leg, others do not. If you have a male who lifts their leg, I used to tape plastic behind the pads or you can purchase a Doggy Bathroom which has sides, or you can make your own with sides . Hope this helps. Thank you for the comment. Joyce
I would like a comparison of disposal potty pads vs washable potty pads. Are puppy washable pads similar to adult people washable pads. Thank you for your video. My dog will not potty outside in the rain and I’m looking for the best options. Your video helped me a lot. Again, thank you! Jan
Hi Janis, i have been asked to do a video on this before. i hesitated because I do not use washable pads for my dogs. But I will do a video about the pros and cons of disposable pads vs washable. But honestly my dogs do so well on the disposable pads, i do not want to confuse them by asking them to pee on the washable pads. Look for the video soon. Thank you, Joyce
Yes, the washable pads are the same as what a person uses. I have used them for many years. I just put them in the washer with tide and some bleach. If you can air dry them outside in the sun, great...if not, dry them on low heat in your dryer. More economical by far
I know this was a long time ago. Other people have asked me to do a comparison of washable pads and potty pads. Do you have input from your experience I can include in the video. Thank you so much. Joyce
i’d like to see a video about using the cloth potty pad with the Iris pad holder… Id also like to know exactly what size potty pads fit your large iris holder… Also, what size cloth pads fit your large Iris holder please? Thx
this is such a difficult video for me to do. i do not use cloth pads. i will see if maybe I can do a short or video. I have the large Iris holder. i use 2 paper pads 21x23 in the holder and pads on top.
@@DiamondDogTraining I’m sorry I meant non judgmental 🤦🏻♀️. The phone must have auto corrected. I get frustrated because all I have been seeing are people being rude about owners pee pad training their dogs. I need to pee pad train mine because I have pugs and live where it is 120 degrees in the summer it’s not possible to take them outside during the high heat because they overheat. I just appreciate you giving actual good advice and being helpful. It’s appreciated
Hi there love the video and all the information, but I have a very serious problem I have a puppy that I am fostering right now due to illness of the person that owns the puppy. But this puppy is constantly chewing on the P pads I work and I’m away from the puppy no fault of mine in the morning for five hours and then in the afternoon for four hours it has toys two toys on one side of the crate with its blanket and the other side of the crate which has a go through kind of window to get from one side to the other uses a P pad but it tears it up I come home at lunch just to clean up that mess and I hardly have any time to spend with the puppy because all I got is half an hour for lunch I can barely eat my lunch while I’m with the puppy outside because there’s just no time to clean up the mess to warm up my food to spend time with the puppy there’s just no time what can I do to prevent this puppy from chewing the P pad. I know you say if you see it just get it away from the P pad but if you’re not home how can you possibly keep an eye on it. I need help please please please I need help with this and thank you in advance😢
Thank you for helping the person who is Ill. Here are 2 suggestions. There is an Iris pad holder which the pads fit into and then are clamped in place. This might work for your puppy . You can see the Iris pad holder in my videos. My concern is your puppy is in the same area as the pads for hours and may start to dig at the center to shred the pads. Can you put more distance between the pee pads and the puppy. Can you use the crate as the play area and surround the crate with a puppy pen where you put the pads further away from where the puppy is playing . You can attach the ends of the pen to the crate to give puppy more room to move and play. 3rd idea is to buy the Doggie Bathroom which makes the potty area separate from the play area. And the 4th suggestion is to use real grass like Fresh Patch which you throw away every few weeks. Puppy may chew the grass. I think even though you are leaving toys while you are at work, your puppy is bored. Have you given puppy stuffed frozen Kong or. Raw bones or Himalayan Chew. Let me know if any of these ideas help. Thank you, Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining hi Joyce, thank you so much for your reply first and foremost. I do have my puppy in one crate it is very large for her it’s like 42“ x 30“ it belong to another dog a big dog I’ve put a divider in it like a window where she can get through from her sleep play area to her potty area so she’s completely separated from that. That gives her more space to move around as far as a playpen I don’t have space to put a playpen in my living room I’d have to remove my sofa or my TV unit and possibly an end table So I can’t really go that route. But I am going to try the iris P pad protector if that’s what it’s called I did see your video and I like it and I am going to try that and I’m gonna put that inside her crate to see if she will leave the pet alone. As far as the Kong I thought about it I’m going to double check with my vet to see what he thinks at her age and what to put inside I thank you so much for your reply your advice and I really hope this works out with the iris P pad protector. And thank you again for your reply you have yourself a wonderful weekend.🤗🤗
Hello! I have just started looking for something like this. I honestly didn’t know there were so many options!!! We just got a great opportunity to move and live in an amazing apartment. The price and location are amazing! Problem is we have three dogs. One small/medium and the other two are small wiener dog mixes. We will have a balcony, I have a young son who can help, but I live in south Texas, and hear and smell and bugs are a real issue for outside. I’ve just started watching ur videos and would like any advice u can offer. We will be up on one of the top floors and they have never had a situation like this before. They are 5, 4, & 3 years old and have never used pads. I’m gonna start training them with pads this week. I’d love to see the doggy lawn and fresh patch as well as the disposal pads and washable ones. Hope I haven’t overwhelmed u!!! I’ll keep doing research! I appreciate all ur helpful information and easy to understand videos!! Tray It is holder Potty pads
Now i have read all your comments and I have more information. You have a balcony and your dogs are used to going to the bathroom on grass. i would try to train them to use the Fresh Patch or Doggie Lawn on your balcony first before you start putting potty pads inside your apartment. i think it will be easier to switch to the real grass than potty pads. Here is a review of Fresh Patch. ruclips.net/video/8nW3PU_J_wc/видео.html
your dogs are used to grass outside. i would try the real grass Fresh Patch or Doggie Lawn or the Porch potty which has the drainage system before you use potty pads indoors. Here is a link for indoor potty training.
I’m getting a mini schnauzer puppy in a few days. I live in a 2 story home. I wanted to know where should I be placing the pads in my home. The dog will be sleeping on the second floor with me.
Hi Ron, I would suggest you keep pee pads on the first floor if you have your puppy in that area during the day in a puppy pen. You should also have puppy pads in the 2nd floor if your puppy is young and you think the puppy will need to use the pads during the night. You don’t say how old your puppy will be . A baby puppy will need pads close to you at night.
Hi Joyce. Kai sometimes pee on the edge or near the pad. Some times he pee towards wall with lifted legs. I had to realign pad to let the plastic edge touching the wall to prevent leaking beneath the pad... do you have any suggestions on them? Interestingly, I find him hesitant to get on the tray, or likes to pull and scratch the pad on the tray but much less to a flat pad... Also I find it difficult to reduce from two pads into one, and I have to cover the room’s two corners, rather than a pad away from any corner. Thanks! On the good side, I follow the power of positive dog training, now Kai can sit, down, touch, shake hands, ring the bell, come, wait(for door), name. Learning more...
Hi Rui, so good to hear from you. When he is lifting his leg, it is difficult to have him hit the potty pads . Look on Amazon for doggie bathroom. They have d Sides which makes it easier to keep the area clean. I am glad Kai is doing good. Thank you. Any questions, just ask.
@@DiamondDogTraining Hi Joyce. I searched a bit and it seems dog bathroom with sides is rare.. If you happen to have any recommended one please let me know! Sometimes when Kai is too active and it's definitely time for potty, I put on a leash with Kai to keep him in the potty pad area and stop him chasing my pants. But he will then enjoy holding the leash and play tug war. I have already practiced feeding him while on leash. He won't care about the leash when running around in the house or have other toys to chew. Is there a better way to let him stay calm and potty? A separate question, he still sometimes pee on the carpet rather than going to the bathroom's pad BY HIMSELF, even though the pad is accessible, and the only place to get a reward after potty. Usually, it's me taking him there on schedule and lock my room's door to wait. Does that habit develop naturally or need some specific training? Thanks!
Here is a link to Dog Bathroom on Amazon amzn.to/2RMoWQf . Teach Kai to sit before you put on his leash. Practice many times before you ask him to sit when he needs to go potty. you may need to keep Kai on a leash attached to you to prevent him peeing on the carpet until he is potty trained. hope this helps. Joyce
You said to ask questions so here goes... I would like to see a comparison of Doggy Lawn to Fresh patch. We’re getting a puppy next week. We would put the sod/tray just outside on our lanai giving the puppy the feeling of going outside instead of pottying in the house. I would use it only in the middle of the night. During daylight hours I will walk him in our yard. My husband wants to buy sod from Lowe’s because it would be more realistic for him. He would put a large tray under the sod. I’d like to hear your thoughts on all three please.
Hi Nancy, thank you, i will do a comparison of Doggy Lawn and Fresh Patch. Not clear in your post, where are you putting the sod/tray. will it be outside? Doggielawn and Fresh patch do not have dirt or soil as real sod does. Doggielawn and fresh patch would be cleaner than sod. The doggie lawn and fresh patch would stay in the tray or box. no mess. Roll up the old one and replace with new. What size puppy are you getting next week? I will order both products and do the review. i really do want to give both of them another try. leave More questions, in the comments. Thank you, Joyce
Diamond Dog Training Diamond Dog Training Thank you so much for responding so quickly! We are getting a Havanese puppy. We would put the real sod outside on the concrete in our screened in lanai (we live in Florida).
Hi Nancy, here is a link to the Fresh Patch Review. The plan to review both Fresh Patch and Doggie lawn do not work out. The DoggieLawn was not delivered in usable condition. So I just did this video to give people information about Fresh Patch. Hope this helps . As I say in the video, putting the Fresh Patch outside as you plan on doing , may work very well for you . Let me know how you are doing. ruclips.net/video/8nW3PU_J_wc/видео.html
Thank you for this video! we're planning to get a puppy who will be left alone in the playpen for 5-6 hours with someone in the house in another room who won't be able to attend to him at all. We were considering getting a synthetic grass patch as it's cheaper than fresh grass and then laying puppy pads in the rest of the playpen to avoid accidents on the floor. Is this a good idea? I am also wondering if the room will smell too much or if the puppy will avoid using it again if the poo is left on the grass for such a long time?
Perhaps getting two synthetic grass pads would be better? We've also considered the self cleaning automatic dog potty with plastic pads that get wrapped up automatically every couple of hours.
Hi, what size puppy are you getting. If this as a small breed puppy then I think your arrangement may work. your puppy may step in the poo or maybe eat it if the poo is left on the grass for too long. i would make the puppy pen large enough to put the 2 grass mats in one corner and put the bed and toys in the other corner away from the grass mats. Are you leaving food and water in the pen. you could cover the floor where the puppy pen will be sitting with a water proof washable whelping pad. let me know how you are doing. Joyce
i’m not sure what to do, our puppy pees outside but when we don’t take him out he can’t control himself which i understand. the entire family is going back to work full time in school and in work so we decided to buy a play pen for him, he would only be alone for 3 hours max because someone will come check on him at lunch and then the kids come back. we were gonna bug fake grass so he doesn’t get used to peeing in the house… what do we do?? also great vid
Hi Ariana, yes, I agree your puppy needs an indoor place to pee when you are gone to work. The grass in the puppy pen will work if your puppy is not lifting his leg and will pee off the grass. You can also buy the doggy bathroom which has sides and uses pee pads on the walls and floor. You can put that inside the puppy pen . Let me know what you decide and how you are doing. thank you. Joyce
My 6 month yorkie was doing amazing on pee pads as we live in a condo than got the taste of going on grass and either missing the pad or picks does it anywhere now we’re having a hard time with the pee pad training is it a good thing to use attractant spray on pee pads to start her up again ? Do they really work? Thanks lucie
I have never had success with attractant spray. i would suggest you go back to basic training on the pee pad. Make your puppy's area smaller, reward with a treat every time your puppy pees on the pee pads. Hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining hi you are so right those attractant sprays do not work at all 😩 waste of 24 bucks … so what ur telling me is shortening the cage I have and only put pads in there with no water or food or anything for her to lay on just pads? Could it be to that I don’t have a eating schedule for her is that part of the problem? How do I set that up? Thank you fir helping me out .
A couple thoughts. You can use a puppy pen to confine your puppy when you cannot watching the puppy. In the puppy pen, you would put a small bed and toys and cover the remainder of the pen with pads. When you can watch your puppy, you can open the puppy pen to create a slightly larger area with access to the pads but use the stretched open pen or gates to prevent your puppy from venturing too far away from the pads. That is what I meant by creating a smaller space. Also if your puppy likes grass, you can introduce the real grass Fresh Patch which your puppy might like more than pads. Having a feeding schedule is really important to know when your puppy needs to Lee and poop. Are you leaving food in the bowl all the time. Free feeding. Are you doing that for a reason. Is your puppy very small. You can begin offering your puppy 4 small meals. If your puppy is a good eater, you can reduce to 3 meals and eliminate the free feeding which will help the potty training. Tell me more about your feeding routine.
A feeding schedule to feed 3 times a day would be breakfast at 6:30, lunch at 12:00 noon and dinner at 6:30pm. This is just an example. You would then look at your schedule and see how to adapt the puppy’s meals to your life. Hope this helps. What are you feeding your puppy. Your puppy is probably teething now because it is 6 months old. The dry food may be too hard to chew. You may want to add some water to soften the food to make it easier to chew
heyyy so i just got my puppy on saturday so it’s been 3 days now and he just pees and doo doo everywhere and we had putt pee pads in one area and down the hallway and he seems not to listen and walk away from it and sniffs the ground and pees how do we get him to stop this very young and we can’t take him out very often because we have a apartment pls help!!
Hi, your puppy does not understand where to pee and doo doo. We need to make your area much smaller. Use gates and puppy pens to block off an area for your puppy. Put pee pads to cover the entire floor so he cannot make a mistake. you can also use real grass mat in the apartment or on a balcony. Hope this helps. Please send more questions. Thank you. Joyce
Always reward your puppy with yummy treat when he pees on the pee pad and be very happy. Praise and love your puppy will help the learn you want them to pee on the pee pads. Eventually you canreduce the area of the pee pads to a small section of the puppy pen. When your puppy is peeing on the pee pads, then you can move the puppy pen to make it a little large. Remember, puppies will always walk away from where they eat and sleep to pee. you have to increase the area so slowly to prevent accidents. Let me know how you are doing. joyce
Hi, are you saying you are using a grass patch or you like per pads? Sorry not sure how to answer you. Whichever you are using, management is the key to potty training. Gates, puppy pen or crate to restrict area and direct your dog to the potty area. Hope this helps. Any questions, please ask. Joyce
When I got my maltese back in 2001 I had carpet. I used puppy pads and I took him out when I came home for lunch and at the end of the work day. He would use the pads, but sometimes would go on the carpet. I was so frustrated...finally after he messed up the carpet so much, I took out the carpet and put in luxury vinyl. That worked...no more accidents. I finally figured out when talking to many people, whenever there was carpet in the home, dogs had a harder time with potty training.
wait... the real grass doggielawn, i should just let them pee? i mean no foul smell is that all? no washing or rellacement except after 2 weaks or smth? that's incredible!
@@DiamondDogTraining thank you Joyce, you are awsome I didn't think you will reply so quickly on such an old and useful video... thank you you are a great experienced person, and sure I will try real grass if it's replaced every week or two and i will let you know. Thank you
@@DiamondDogTraining I have been researching all three because I live in apartments without my own yard. I do not have a puppy yet, but want to be as ready and informed as I can be. Thank you for this informative video.
Great idea. Have you watched my video Fresh Patch review of real grass. I hope the videos help you make a decision. I do have a yard and my dogs have used potty pads for years, so it became so confusing to switch them to real grass. Please tell me about your puppy when you get him or her. So much fun ahead. 😊 Joyce
My dogs would shred the pad when I am away not when I am there. No good ideas the material pads they would play with and crate training never worked my dog screams all day, hangs on the cage like a monkey.
Sounds like the DoggieLawn or Fresh Patch would be a good choice for you. Also a puppy pen with a top would give your puppy more room than a crate . Hope these suggestions help. Thank you for the comment.
If the puppy has to pee, too many people on the elevator means too many stops to get to bottom floor. better to take the stairs. And everyone in the elevator will want to pet the puppy. Again the puppy may pee from excitement.
There are playlists for many topics. Please check the playlists. If you cannot find the videos you are looking for, please tell me what you need. Joyce
You're doing it wrong.... The potty pads go in the tray under the false grass. This keeps urine from splashing out everywhere and prevents the pee pads from getting shredded.
Yes, I agree. That is how I explained it in the video. Fake grass I put potty pad underneath. Real grass, I did not use potty pads underneath. Thank you for your comment. Are you using fake grass, real grass or potty pads. Of do you use washable pads. Always interested in your comments
Ugh, for all the stupid restaurant owners who put guests who get to watch dogs pee and poo while they are eating. I know I am one those stupid owners who thought with a dogs keen sense of smell would know the difference between plastic and grass. But is it their fault they are trained to use artificial turn as a bathroom?
I really don’t know why a person would let there dog pee in front of a restaurant. I would certainly move the dog away from the restaurant and the people. Thank you for your comment. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining I would pick up the pace a bit. Also.....the whole thing about the fake grass patch was absurd. You do NOT Pick it up and wash it after every use. You put a puppy pad under it. You can spray it if you want with a mixture of water and a little ivory liquid or other mild detergent and follow with plain water. Then roll it to the side, role the puppy pad as well, replace the pad on that side b4 doing the same with the other...vuala!! It is best NOT 2 wash it emediately anyway as you want to attract your dog to that patch. I've trained many dogs...it works. Take care
You have a good idea. How often do you change the pellets. Where do you buy them. Does it crest any mess in the house. How would you dispose of them in an apartment building. I am really interested in your reply. Thank you . Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining I change out the pine pellets about once a week. As when a dog or cat urinates on them the pellets dissolve into saw dust. To help with the process, I bought a sifting cat litter box that I use as an aid to clean out my doggy litter box. Since I remove all solids from the litter box and flush them down the toilet as soon as I see them, I empty the litter box contents into the cat sifter with the cat litter box sitting below the sifter. Next I sift out all the sawdust into the cat litter box below the sifter. When all that remains in the sifter are pine pellets, I then empty the sifter contents back into the litter box and add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of fresh pine pellets to replenish the pine pellets that were used. Lastly, I empty the cat litter box with the saw dust in it into the trash since it is odorless. Wipe everything down with paper towels and put every thing up until the next time . The entire process probably takes under five minutes. I purchased 40 pound bag of pine pellets at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 a bag plus tax. I expect to go through about two to three bags a year. Moreover, pine pellets also eliminate virtually all odors and they are quite easy to work with. Hence, I highly recommend using pine pellets as litter material and especially if you live in an apartment. Another advantage is they are quite a bit cheaper than other litter materials. As for as a mess goes, there are a few pellets that escape the doggy litter box and onto the floor as the week goes by at the entrance to the doggy litter box situated in my bathroom, but it takes me less than 30 seconds each week to vacuum them up. Since you live in an apartment complex, there is no more elegant solution for potty training your Chihuahua or any other small breed dog. Not to mention that the simple process of training if strictly adhered to is super simple and easy as the puppy actually trains itself. As it never has an opportunity to learn any bad behaviors. Not to mention the process is not only much faster relative to other training methods, but my new Chihuahua has not had even one puppy mistake inside my home since I got her and that's a first for me. Knock on wood. As you won't have to worry about maintaining a strict schedule to let your puppy outside periodically, plus the time involved with doing that, which is a major advantage especially if you live in an upstairs apartment. You want have to worry about whether it is snowing, raining, freezing, or too hot either. You want have to worry about leaving your Chihuahua home alone for extended periods of time. You want have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or your dog catching a disease that another dog left behind. You also won't have to worry about your tiny Chihuahua being attacked by a larger dog. Hence, overall, whether you live in an apartment complex or a home, it is by far the best solution.
@@DiamondDogTraining This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used. So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it. At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material. Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm. So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated. Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly. Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained. In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes. Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home. As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust. To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week.

I am glad you found something that worked for you. Really creative. That is great.

Thank you . Joyce

Sounds like you have a great system. Joyce
Its so nice to find a video that covers everything you've been searching for ♥️ Thank you!!!

@@DiamondDogTraining Hi Joyce !!! Ill be training the puppies with the regular pee pads and the pee pad holder 💕 Thank you again so much for the video !
Thank you for letting me know. Exactly what I use. Let me know how you are doing . If you have any questions.
I so appreciate your straight forward approach. So tired of so many younger women being cutesy for the camera. You're great. Will watch you again.
Thank you. I use washable and on top the disposable blue pad pet .
Thank you. How often do you need to wash the washable pad. Thank you . Joyce
It's a pain spraying it off Clean and STINKS if you don't. that is good
Joyce

Thanks!!! Yes I would like to see the washable pad video comparison
Thank you for the suggestion. I will see what I can do .
We can’t let them get wet at this point so the lawn would have to be dry.
thank you for all the great work you are doing to raise the baby puppies. All the best. Joyce

Sounds like you have thought about it carefully and planned everything. Did you get your puppy. How is your system working. Thank you. Joyce
Thank you .

I use fake grass but I am finding my puppy now uses any Matt in the house to potty on now
Yes, that can be a problem.
@@DiamondDogTraining I use disposable pads. Thanks so much for the information.
Don't the male dogs spray on the wall with the patch pad?
yes, some males lift their leg, others do not.
Jan

Yes, the washable pads are the same as what a person uses. I have used them for many years. I just put them in the washer with tide and some bleach. If you can air dry them outside in the sun, great...if not, dry them on low heat in your dryer. More economical by far

That gives her more space to move around as far as a playpen I don’t have space to put a playpen in my living room I’d have to remove my sofa or my TV unit and possibly an end table
So I can’t really go that route.
They have d
Sides which makes it easier to keep the area clean.
Joyce
i am following Kai on Instagram. i love the pictures.

Let me know how you are doing. joyce
My multipoo is a year old and is still having accidents in the house, peeing and pooing on carpets and furniture. I don’t think grass patches work
Hi, are you saying you are using a grass patch or you like per pads? Sorry not sure how to answer you. Whichever you are using, management is the key to potty training. Gates, puppy pen or crate to restrict area and direct your dog to the potty area. Hope this helps. Any questions, please ask. Joyce
When I got my maltese back in 2001 I had carpet. I used puppy pads and I took him out when I came home for lunch and at the end of the work day. He would use the pads, but sometimes would go on the carpet. I was so frustrated...finally after he messed up the carpet so much, I took out the carpet and put in luxury vinyl. That worked...no more accidents. I finally figured out when talking to many people, whenever there was carpet in the home, dogs had a harder time with potty training.
wait... the real grass doggielawn, i should just let them pee? i mean no foul smell is that all? no washing or rellacement except after 2 weaks or smth? that's incredible!
yes, the company sends you a new piece on a schedule to keep the grass fresh. Let me know if the real grass works for you. Thank you. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining thank you Joyce, you are awsome I didn't think you will reply so quickly on such an old and useful video... thank you you are a great experienced person, and sure I will try real grass if it's replaced every week or two and i will let you know. Thank you
👍
Hi, thank you for your comment. Do you have fake or real grass or potty pads for your dog. How are you using them for your dog. Do you have a puppy .
😊 Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining I have not watched it, but I will. Thank you, Joyce.
I just dig a grass patch and put it into a tray lol
that works
Disposable is better than washable be done with it less time
I agree, I use disposable and I like them best. Thank you . Joyce
i use pads, but human ones, cheaper. 3 dogs, i use alot.of them.
Good idea
My dogs would shred the pad when I am away not when I am there. No good ideas the material pads they would play with and crate training never worked my dog screams all day, hangs on the cage like a monkey.
Sounds like the DoggieLawn or Fresh Patch would be a good choice for you. Also a puppy pen with a top would give your puppy more room than a crate . Hope these suggestions help. Thank you for the comment.
Why would you not get on an elevator when there are people on it? You said "if there are people on it then you don't get on"
If the puppy has to pee, too many people on the elevator means too many stops to get to bottom floor. better to take the stairs. And everyone in the elevator will want to pet the puppy. Again the puppy may pee from excitement.
She's the grandma we didn't have
If that is for me, I will take that as a complement.
@@DiamondDogTraining Yes. Hope I can find a comprehensive playlist of your work; I am a first time canine adopter.
Joyce
What a boring delivery....😴
Sorry you found it boring. How do you think I can make it more interesting. Thank you .
Take care
Neither fake grass nor pee pads. Use a doggy litter box with pine pellets inside instead. An astronomically far better solution. Trust me.
You have a fantastic system. I can tell you have put so much thought into everything you do.
Is it ok with you that I pass along your valuable information. I may be able to include your system in a video comparing the pads, washable pads, grass and now your Pune pellets. I think many people would love to know about your information. Thank you , Joyce
Do the Pine pellets stick to the waste you flush down the toilet. Is there any problem with the septic . Just trying to answer all questions, people might ask if they see a video with your method . Thank you Joyce
