Do a Borodino-Class Battlecruiser
best standardised naval gun to be used on a ship in your opinion?
Hello Drach, what do you think makes a good naval historian, or a good historian in general, and how would you define one? Do you think it just comes down to digging into hundreds of different sources and then puzzled together a possible truth, or there is more than that to it?
Are the Gangut class design based on the Italian dreadnought Dante Alighieri?
Glad to see that the Russians are as consistent with their battleship names as they are with their city names.
Original names were not after cities, but after historical battles. Two from Crimean war and two from Peter The Great era. Naming was consistent. Locations themselves were from different eras/places/origins. One got Swedish origin. Other is Ukrainian. Third is pseudo-Helenic. Last one is after two saints.

Ah yes, the highest tier battleship in the Russian line in World of Warships to actually exist.
They actually started building the Soviezky Soyuz class, (IDK how to spell it) but it got cancelled in the 1950s IIRC.
In fact, the only one to be completed. Period.

One thing I'd like to point out: these ships were called the Sevastopol class in Russian documents. I've got a few books in original language that refers to them as such. Just needed to get this out there, since Gangut was the last of the four battleships to be launched and commissioned.
Aside from that, great video as always Drach!
They are called Gangut class in some older documents, IIRC.
It might be because Gangut was the one that was supposed to be finished the first. I think its the same case with Borodino-class , Izmail was the one that was launched the first instead of Borodino.
@@renown6386 Good point, but that is still technically not correct. Just felt that it needed to be pointed out.

@@tomstech4390 Or a side by side 12 gauge and a crate of bird shot.
It is built before WW1. Even post war refits were done before air power was a thing. They knew that AA is not adequate and refits did increase AA capability.
1 AA gun is from English specs. Image shows AA guns mounted on each turret. They were not mounting quarter of a gun on each turret. Russian book referenced in wikipedia talks about two 75 or 68 mm and one 47mm Hotchkiss gun and ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:Battleship_Marat_12-inch_bow_triple_turret.jpg (and 2:35 photo in video) matches it. Initial plans were for 4x4 QF-3 Hotchkiss according to Russian sources, but they did not have enough of those or they lost lots of them in Tsushima.

I actually like the looks of Imperial Russian Predreadnoughts and Dreadnoughts.
They seem like lost ships from a dream sailing on a forgotten sea, and more steam punk than other battle ships but not way over the top like French predreadnoughts.
"So the most exciting thing's they ended uo doing was occasionally running a ground"
LOL! 😆
Exciting. ;-)
Marat’s killer was a Stuka pilot called Hans Ulrich Rudel, he would go on to become most decorated ground attack ace of the war and the only recipient of Germany’s highest military honour
True story
He also helped the US develop the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
Dude was a true Nazi, but an absolute legend. His bodycount is unmatched.
In 1940 Göring secured the only Grand Cross of the Iron Cross which was technically above the Knights cross and it's higher versions. Rudel was the only recipient of the golden Oakleaves to the Knights Cross, which came after the Knights Cross with Diamonds (that was awarded 27 times)
Fascinating! My wife's great grandfather was an engineer working on the Sevastopol after 1909 at the Baltic Shipyard on St Petersburg's Vasilevsky Island so this is our family history. Thank you for your post!
For those who were wondering, October Revolution in Russian is Октябрьская Революция, or Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya.
(Ok-tyeah-brr-sky-uh Rev-oloot-see-yuh)
Note the more modern looking "clipper" bows and pagoda style superstructures. Big problem with ships that had their turrets spaced between engine rooms was that despite the best efforts, the difference in temperatures of the ammunition meant greater dispersion of salvos. Second problem was the lack of space to add AA guns without interfering with firing arcs. Third problem was where to put fire controls, radar and radio compartments. The Japanese and American navies had the same problem with their prewar designs.

You should do a video about the HMAS Australia 1, The first (and last) Australian capital ship. It was also the most powerful warship in the Southern Hemisphere of its time.
Has less armour than any equivalent battleship (outside of Spain) while in WoWs best armour at tier.
In the teir they are facing ships from about the same era in wows in reality they were gen 1/2 deadnoughts facing gen 2 superdreads
The deves even admitted they balanced the Imperator Nikolai I against tier 6 ships, which just goes to show you how biased they are.
@@Edax_Royeaux Exactly, the Wargaming crew disgusts me with their Russian bias of late. Russians for Russians. They effectively made that totally inadequate 9 inch belt into something that bounces shots all the time!

The main guns were laid out using the design of Cuniberti, chief designer of the Italian Navy. The first Italian dreadnought Dante Alighieri was the first battleship built according to his principles. Italian-Russian/Soviet cooperation was strong up to WWII. Gangut is a boisterous, vodka-swilling wild-haired beauty in Azur Lane, so I think at least some in the old Rodina would approve :3
On that same note, Rozhestvensky might approve of Azur Lane's depiction of Avrora, given that she was one of the better-crewed ships in his squadron.
Some trivia; The class is named in honour of the first Russian naval victory at Rilax, but since the Russians didn't know local geography very well and knew it was in the general vicinity of the Hangö peninsula, or to the local Swedish, Hangö Udd, but do some linguistic differences that had arisen in the two Indo-European languages, the Russian pronunciation bore out in the transliteration, and Hangö Udd somehow became Gangut or using a more contemporary transliteration, Khangud.
Frunze (Froon-zeh) in honor of contemporary revolutionary military commander Mikhail Frunze.
Marat (Mar-aht, emphasis on the second syllable) in honor of the French revolutionary Jean Paul Marat.
October Revolution and Parisian Commune are largely obvious inspirations.
3 times? Bless. Hangover squad is still standing by good to go. Well, kind of.
The Marat's bow was blown off by a bomb hit from a JU-87 Stuka dive bomber piloted by Hans-Ulrich Rudel (2 July 1916 - 18 December 1982) .
Looks like we're getting spoiled today, 3 videos so far :)
"The Nelson class is so ugly!"
Imperial Russian Navy: "Hold my borscht."
At least the Ganguts look like Battleships. The Nelson almost look like some kind of super-monitor and not an actual Battleship.
Ну ты и дурачина...
You mean brake fluid?
@@Edax_Royeaux pre refit yes. Post refit is some kind of brutalist architectural nightmare lol
@Mr. Moon Oh, if only the Nelsons had an extra few thousand tons displacement for engines (A treaty limit of 40,000 tons might have let the KGVs upgrade the twin turret to a quad, too)! I think stretching the hull out behind the tower would greatly improve the appearance of the class by balancing out the proportions. Overall I agree with you about the Nelsons, quite nice looking ships for their atypical layout.
Clever and definitely original design with minimal superstructure and a lot of firepower mounted on a rather small hull.
First, the Octtober Revolution was in November 1917, and the Peace of Brest-Litovsk was signed in March 1918. So, the mutiny in March 1917 could have nothing to do with those two events. You probably meant March of 1918.
Second, you forgot to mention that only time a ship of Gangut class engaged in a sea battle was a scirmish with British ships in Baltic in 1919.
You are correct, Brest-Litovsk Treaty happened one year later, but the mutiny or in fact chain of mutinies in Baltic Fleet started in March 1917 - after February Revolution.
Stock footage of this class is used in the climactic scenes of Sergei Eisenstein's film The Battleship Potemkin. The still at 2:39 is similar to one of the shots used in the movie. Of course that's anachronistic, since the mutiny on the Potemkin happened in 1905.
Lightly armored?
_Nyet, battleship is fine (hic)_
What a gorgeous ship class, wish they kept one as a museum ship similar to the Aurora.
I wonder why they didn’t. The ships were still in decent shape by the 50s.

As a russian-speaker, it would be very interesting for me to watch the video "How to Pronounce - Russian Capital Ships"
These are so much better with you doing the talking
There in one day. Nice! Thanks, Drach. The modernized _Gangut_ class had their own version of pagoda masts, but they all had quite good fire control systems that were continually upgraded into WWII. It would have been interesting to see how they would have fared in a gun duel with a _Scharnost_.
Scharnhorst has a decent speed advantage. Scharnhorst also has a 14 inch belt that should fare decently well against Gangut’s 12 inch guns, while Gangut’s 9 inch belt would really struggle against Scharnhorst’s 11 inch guns.
They would die
A Scharnhorst would shred them in short order. Radar gunlaying, much better armour, much faster. The German 11" I suspect at least matches the old Russian 12", if not betters it. Gangut has an advantage in weight of broadside, but that's about it.
even modernized she had less armour than a WW1 British Battlecruiser even Kongo is heavily armoured compared to Gangut not to mention how slow she was by WW2 standards in WW2 the Russians borrowed an old obsolete R class Battleship from the British and that ship was easily the most powerful ship in the entire Soviet Navy. In any gun duel between a modernized Gangut and even a Kongo or a 1930 HMS Tiger let alone a Scharnhorst Gangut is just an XP piñata
Wow! Talk about a makeover! I nearly jumped out of my seat seeing the new bows. Very sharp, and VERY Soviet in their aesthetic. Love the pagodas, too!
I would like to explain the naming a little bit:
Gangut was named after Battle of Gangut in 1714 where Peter the Great galleys cornered and defeated Swedish Fleet.
Sevastopol was renamed to "Parizhskaya Kommuna" (Paris Commune) - a socialist government which ruled Paris in 1871.
Petropavlosk was renamed to "Marat" - after Jean-Paul Marat, one of the politicians during the French Revolution. He was the guy who managed to get stabbed in the bath...
Poltava was renamed to Frunze - after Mikhail Frunze, one of bolsheviks military leaders
The only thing worse than a ship named after a guy who got stabbed in the bath tub would be a bath bomb named after him.
I must confess however, I do like both ideas as they are ghastly enough to have a delightfully over the top morbid appeal.
Not that anyone in Russia did or would ask for my approval, but I approve.
Oh dear, Drach, you're all mixed up with regard to the Revolution. The mutinies were during the Russian Revolution of February/March 1917, the October Revolution later that year was the Communist one, and then Brest-Litovsk taking Russia out of the war was signed in March 1918; AFTER both the original and subsequent Communist Revolutions.
Churchill had a saying about the luck accompanying cities and ships that changed their names.
I`ve waited for this for a long time... Thank you, Drach

It is the first soviet bb you can unlock in NF mobile, unfortunately it gets dumpstered by all the S grade ships running around
Bonus fact: Marat was sunk by one Ju 87,flown by Stuka Ace Hans-Ulrich Rudel.
It had to be him 😂
can you make one of your short videos that explains the differences between pre-dreadnought, dreadnought, dreadnought 2, and super dreadnought?
pre-dreadnought - various assortment of guns and majority in secondary or tertiary caliber.
dreadnought - namesake ship, 11-12 inch main battery, lots of big guns, experiments with turret layout, 20k ton displacement
dreadnought 2 - no such thing
super-dreadnought - 13-14+ in batteries, far less experiments with turret layouts
Or maybe your dreadnought 2 fits 25k ton/13-14 inch guns and supers are 30k+ tons with 15-16+ inch guns. Then you might ask for battlecruiser and fast battleship explanation too.
Just see how preceding and superseding classes for HMS Dreadnought look like.
