This manga is basically what people who haven't been in a relationship thinks what relationships are like.
I get you man, like honestly i feel quite sad for them for enjoying this manga and anime for this long. Like, okay the half of the episode and some chapters of the manga was entertaining, but Kazuya personality as a male protag is just dumb and stupid and the plot of the story just feels like a damn loop.

How to make a good romance anime MC 101:
- MC can stand up to himself.
- MC does pick the right girl by testing her.
- MC can fight back.
- MC does confess when it's the right time.
- MC straight up tells his family when he's dating someone or hiring a rental GF.
- MC only hires a rental GF because he wants to understand women better and takes advice from the girl.
- Overall smart and mature w/ his decisions.
- Ain't bland and dense af.
- Not a sore loser.
- Can tell a girl to stfu and move on with her life if he doesn't like the girl.

If anyone wants a pallet cleanser after suffering through Rent-A-Girlfriend, I highly recommend Extremely Straightforward Boyfriend x Girlfriend. It's exactly what it says on the tin. It's only got 39 chapters, and that's all it needs. *It's gold!* They get shit done, there's no nonsense misunderstandings, there are no love rivals, the relationship is healthy, the two main characters have a beautiful wedding, and they all live happily ever after with an adorable and likewise extremely straightforward daughter.

Ruka bothers me on how she forces herself onto him like that, he clearly doesnt like her otherwise he would've jumped at the chance of a cute girl being into him like that, but she continuously forces herself onto him, harassing him and putting him in stressful situations, also sabotaging his other relationships. The kiss scene is her kissing him without his consent, and he told her to stop but she kept going. She seems to have no respect for his boundaries, Kazuya isn't without faults but no one deserves to have essentially a watered down yandere forcing herself onto you ignoring your own feelings because she loves you and that makes her your girlfriend. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if Ruka hadn't done things like invite herself to his place so she could have sex with him and kiss him without his consent and generally stressing him out by imposing herself onto him also she lacks boundaries with him justifying she's his girlfriends but the fact he never said yes to it and is essentially in love with someone else should tell her that yeah maybe you shouldn't force yourself onto him. The fact that people like her or defend her behaviour is messed up because she's essentially a selfish toxic predator that ignores peoples boundaries
Yeah, she's by far my leadt favorite in this series. She had like one okayish moment in the whole manga, when she tried a bit to open up Kazuys eyes telling him longing for mizuhara is stupid, cause he has the real deal, her, right in front of him, but serieously, she doesn't belong in a relationship with him. And he already told her that.

Haven't watched or read rent a girlfriend, but this doesn't surprise me. For some reason, a lot of anime like to drag out romance stories, with the ultimate goal being "the main character finally confesses", as if a romance story cant exist past a relationship being established.
Recently watched Horimiya and I was surprised that they managed to base an anime on a wholesome and somewhat believeable progression of a relationship.

Horimiya actually seems like the first romance anime in recent years where most of the episodes are actually worth your time, and I'm glad that more and more anime and manga are breaking out of this stupid ass trope.

This anime also brings up the ever-growing issue of a male lead who has little to nothing of value being surrounded by adoring women in many other romance animes/manga.
A story about a quiet, nerdy, scrawny unpopular guy can absolutely work well, but a huge issue that a lot of authors hit is that they forget that there has to be some sort of appeal to the male lead for his love interests to actually find something in him to like. It's one thing to try and promote that quiet, nerdy, unpopular guys deserve love, it's another to write a literal garbage dump for a male lead and have the same expectations.
So many of these romance animes/mangas fail at making a good romance between the lead male and the love interest because their lead male is either bland and boring, has no personality other than being a pervert, so oblivious to the affections of his love interests that you question if he has brain damage, or they're straight up written like a closet r@pist. Sometimes all of the above at the same time.
It's cute when it's a story about a shy, unpopular guy who finds a girl who loves and accepts him despite that. It's not cute when the guy in question is actually a restraining order on legs while preaching that they deserve to be given love when they have nothing going for them.
In response to the last paragraph, if you want a story like that, read/watch "My Dress-Up Darling". Marin and Gojo are probably the most functioning main couple of a romcom series that I have ever read.
@@imjustbeinghonest2994 I’m not a huge fan of mangas similar to Dress-Up darling, so I just watched the anime, and honestly there were parts I didn’t enjoy (obviously, the fanservice, but like 90% of romance anime has excessive fanservice), but my favourite part was that Gojo *was* an unpopular guy, the difference between him and other mc’s was that he wasn’t a massive incel, he actually had skill in a craft and is a decent guy who just likes doing his sewing and working with his grandpa.

recently I figured out one of the main reasons I hate the MC. He is so obssessed with being Chizuru's boyfriend he isn't even her friend. I realised it when chizuru hugs him after her grandmother died. And he just stands there like a fucking moron. And I'm not saying this is the time to ask her out, I'm saying that your friend is crying to you about their dead relative and you're literally too much of an incel to comfort them.

eh to be fair if I remember right he wasn't trying to get with her at the time when her grandma got really sick he tried to help her get her movie made so that her grandmother could see Chizuru act before she died it was actually I'd say when he was the most likeable and you were able to root for him a bit more hell even after he was trying to cheer her up after her grandmother died

I really wish the mangaka would partner up with someone who actually knows how to write a romcom for his next work. The man's art are really good, especially his fashion sense but he doesn't know how to write good characters.

He should learn from Negi Haruba (the Quintessential Quintuplets author) and Nanashi (Nagatoro author).
Those guys wrote good and enjoyable romcom in less than 150 chapters and were serialized in the same magazine (Weekly shonen magazine) .
Heck Nagatoro is still running and there's even more progression in Nagatoro plot than in Rent a girlfriend and Nagatoro manga didn't even reach 100 chapters yet.

I felt legitimately shocked when I learned that the mangaka is married and has kids, because the story feels like it was written by an incel that has never had a real conversation with a woman (and I don't even mean it in a romantic way).

Unfortunately profit makes the world go round.You can choose to create a story that's subversive and groundbreaking and isn't for everyone's taste at the high risk of not earning a lot/not becoming very popular because you have a specific audience, or you can create a watered down, easy to digest tale that's been done to death for over 20 years now, with the high chance of it becoming popular with the masses. Such is the dilemma for any budding creator who wants to keep their integrity but also be able to pay the bills.

I relate so much to you, i read a good amout of chapters of this manga not so long before the anime was released and in some part i started to get pissed by how stagnant the plot is, but i keeped reading, until thanks to a problem in the website i was reading that was missing a lot of chapter's, it made me turn on my brain and i realised how bad this was, basically everything you said here fits perfectly in how i felt in the parts i read, thanks for this wonderful video.
Let's be realistic here. If the cast was gender flipped so it becomes Rent A Boyfriend, Kazuya's role would be loved simply because waifu and Mami's and Ruka's roles would be hated even more. That scene where Ruka cries because Kazuya won't date her? If it was a guy doing that, people would be throwing the simp and loser cards at him.

No way Kazuya's role would be loved even if he's a heroine. People hate weak and pathetic heroine more than anything , look at Diabolik lovers , brothers conflict or any bad reverse harem lmao.
Now in some other universe, rent a girlfriend is about a depressed dude who believes he will die alone and without anything (shows a single gravestone) who's trying to feel alive by renting a girlfriend, and she ends up actually helping him get his life out of the dump, and they both end up liking each other. The dude finally confesses, and they start officially going out. The story then turns into a slice of life where the couple gets better jobs, and end up moving together and starting a family. It follows them til the end when the girl is on her death bed (old age), and she says "I'll be waiting for you on the other side". After a few panels of him visiting her grave, and giving a flower (idk some flower from earlier in the story). it then shows him on his death bed, and as he's slowly dying he sees a white light, and his wife reaching to him for a hug, he says "you kept your promise" with a tear of joy, and he slowly gets pulled into the light. Last scene shows the 2 Graves side by side.
