Whenever conversations like this come up, I always wonder how many artistic legends of the past actually did very bad things that were just never discovered. Just think about how certain things used to be completely acceptable or, at the very least, considered "not that bad" at certain points in time. Really makes you thin about just how much of the most respected art, literature, and music in the world may have been made by people who did things that we consider to be absolutely unacceptable.
Walt Disney had been pushing witchcraft to children “See the MAGIC of Disney” In my story even though it is with Gacha life, the antagonist is identified through his witchcraft, the heroes have superpowers given as a blessing to protect the world from evils such as the villainous sorcerer. But I don’t recommend you see since I made it for myself and there are some retcons such as name changing etc Edit: you’re right about his works can be enjoyed Separating the art from the artist is bravery and show you’re not trapped in bitterness
I think it’s how much the artist impacts the art in particular as well, though. Usually, I’m completely fine with separating art and the artist, but when the artist is very deeply linked or sometimes straight up in the art, it’s a bit harder.
@@stinkyuhoh999 it basically inspired many concepts of the terrifying unknown that I see everywhere, plus its more of a consensus he was the father of the genre
For me, when it comes to separating art from the artist, it depends on each "art". There are some TV shows and movies that were created by a terrible person, but it's easy for me to separate them because they weren't the only one who made it, there's a whole group of people who worked on it.
Ik but sometimes it gets really hard to watch some projects where the people involved in did some fucked up shit. For example, i can't find it in myself to watch baby driver.
It takes critical thinking to understand the separation of art and artists. You can’t enjoy anything without being able to separate the person and the product.
It also takes a reality check. People need to understand that their favorite artists are not Jesus and that everyone has skeleton in their closets. The only difference between most people is who gets caught or not.
I think what makes things more difficult is when the art is very much about the artist. Kanye’s music is definitely about himself which makes that line of separation a lot less clear
Ok but he's not saying anti-Semitic sh*t in his music, his music has the typical level braggadocious and questionable lyrics that a lot of rap stars have. You're not wrong but Kanye's music only illustrates his general shittiness and narcissism and I'm not willing to stop listening to someone's music over that if it's as good as Kanye. R Kelly would be different, since he's a pedophile who wrote songs about romance and sex, meaning I could never separate his actions from his music.
Old Kanye isn’t the same man as new Kanye meaning I can listen to the trilogy and 808s while thinking about Old Kanye without having to think about new Kanye. Basically I’m coping

You're still supporting them through publicity. You might not have spent money, but you spreading their name can potentially make others spend money on their stuff.
This is a very important message tho. Like I know some people who will absolutely not listen/watch/use from someone because they hate the creator and their actions. You can like something without liking the person.
Sometimes it’s hard to enjoy someone’s art if you don’t like them. It’s like trying to laugh at a comedian’s jokes, but in the back of your mind you’re thinking “you’re an asshole” the whole time.
I think you can enjoy art without liking the artist, but by supporting the ART you're supporting(financially, directly or indirectly) the artist, so It's a thin line
This is where I’m at. I think if consumption of the art financially supports a harmful individual or allows them to stay publicly visible in a way that allows their harm to persist, then you have to divorce yourself from the art (or pirate it)
A good point to think about is that, nowadays, "art" isn't really a solo-project, its actually done by massive teams of people, though the stars of course outshine them. If an artist is cancelled, they've already been boycott; they aren't getting any more films or anything, and will already lose a ton of money. When you choose to not consume you're content, you're not only taking money away from them, but the entire team that made it possible. Like, if you don't choose to watch a movie because an actor is in it, you're taking away from the director, set designer, script writer, costume designer and all that other stuff. If you don't choose to play a game because a voice actor told you to, you're making all the developers, level planners, concept artists and the like lose out to. This is one of the most important reasons why you separate the "art" from the "artists", because often times, it isn't really even fully their own "art" or "effort" in the first place.
Exactly this! There is (was) this band called Lostprophets, the singer did extremely awful things but I still can't stop liking Lostprophets' songs because the other members weren't part of it and also, as far as I know, the singer didn't even write the music (he did write some lyrics though)
@@Noname-gm9yb bro, riffs, chord progressions, solos, beats, basslines and other important parts (including vocal melodies) don't write themselves just because you wrote a lyric
Yes ! I model for a brand that everyone hates and me and the crew members get shit on for working for them because the owner has said some annoying shit. like just cause we work somewhere doesn’t mean we allign with their beleifsb
Excellent points and very well said! I agree that it gets a little trickier when the artist included creepy stuff in their work, for example Dan Scumbag used to sexualize children in the shows he produced and directed. There are clips of Arianna Grande saying and doing suggestive things in the show, that most kids wouldn't get watching it, but now as an adult makes me sick. Plus the whole foot as a mascot Nickelodeon thing 👀👀. Maybe some of those shows are still, at their core, good shows and the acting is great...but do I want my future kids watching them? With all the freaky subliminal crap Dan put in them? Heck no!! Edit: Also yeah, the "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" is another great example of this. Because the warped ideology of the artist in question heavily influenced and is apart of their art..by appreciating the art in these cases we are also, in a sense, supporting that ideology
Trapped in the closet was an emotional and religious experience for me the first time I listened to it. That goofy beat and how he always ends on a cliffhanger to the next part. “Oh my god a midget, midget, midget”
It depends on the type of art, sometimes artists create art that talks about the darkness within us or something really personal, or maybe art that takes some form of moral high ground, so when they get caught doing something terrible I feel like those thoughts linger in your head preventing you from fully enjoying the art in the same way I think it is possible to separate art from the artist, just not every single time
@@alexcat6685 I think Timothee Chalamet is the inverse of this. He is an actor whose body of work (mainly Dune and Wonka) have been criticized for being racist, pro slavery and pro manifest destiny yet in spite of this has NEVER been accused of being a racist/white supremacist. Infact the opposite it true.
This is the most balanced takes on separating the art from the artist. I saw a lot of comments online saying people shouldn’t shop at Coles (one of the few major grocery chains in Australia) because Coles had a promotion where you could receive small cardboard Harry Potter ‘figures’. They were saying don’t shop at the store ever because they ran a promotion for a month or so… not ‘if you don’t want the promotional item don’t take it’… they weren’t only throwing the baby out with the bath water but they were throwing out the bath and smashing everything in the bathroom…
This can also be said with songs. Songs like Pumped Up Kicks, Blurred Lines, S&M etc have some pretty crazy meanings to their lyrics, but there still catchy as heck.
I don't think this applies as much (At least in terms of Pumped Up Kicks like songs). A song can be catchy with distrubing lyrics doesn't mean they're not catchy and it definetly doesn't mean the lyrics are bad or wrong, but I completly see the argument with stuff like Blurred Lines, and songs in different languages especially are easy to completely ignore/miss the meaning of.
Literally the entirety of rap music since most rappers are gangbangers or wanna-be criminals, and will make threats to people in their music, and usually end up in prison for their violent crimes. I never personally gave af about those things they they said or did while listening to their art, and I don’t think people usually ever cared about morals and all that stuff while listening to that type of music at all except for maybe old parents telling their kids that rap and rock is the devil.
One thing I had to tell myself was that celebrities are just like everyone else, they say and do crazy things but when you're in hollywood people expect stuff like this to never happen because they're looked at as sane people.
I agree with everything this man said in the video. 100/10 commentary. Not everyday you can see someone spin something so serious and make it hilarious and do it well. But, as an Aaliyah fan, when he pronounced her name wrong, my heart hurt a little😭

It’s always tough when a creator you enjoy does something terrible. Especially if consuming their stuff makes them more money or gives them more social power. Sorry that happened dude.
Sometimes the artists behavior and personality can change the context of the art. All in all I think it's alright to enjoy a controversial artists work so long as you aren't supporting that artist finacially. Dali might've used his wealth for outlandish exploits, but if an artist you enjoy will use these funds to directly harm people, they shouldn't be supported this way.
I've seen people who will hate on the art because of what the artist did, and so I love the fact that you're speaking out about this for others to hear.
The difficulty of separation depends on the 'art' made: An actor in a movie is just playing a character in the movie. Someone else could have played that same character. For paintings and drawings, you only see the art without necessarily seeing the artist, and so one can more easily "overlook" the shittiness of the artist. For music, you are directly listening to the artist. The song is more directly linked to the artist than an actor in a movie, for example.
I have a tattoo of Blond by Frank Ocean, and no matter what he does in the future, I will never regret or be ashamed of it. What that album did for me at a time of my life will never change and will always stay the same for me
@@TIDMVIDM nah but if he ever does, I won’t regret the tattoo. seen people really hate their Kanye tattoo’s now, as if the music itself and what it meant to them has changed
Jokes aside, I like the comparison that where a good person makes terrible art, you are not compelled to enjoy it. Therefore if a bad person makes art, you don't have to stop enjoying it
I agree with you about separating the art from the artist but there's some cases where you simply can't, for example there was this one very popular children's writer who was a therapist and would write the stories of the kids that would come to him for therapy and it was later revealed that he sexually abused those children and everyone I knew immediately burned his books.
I think it’s when the artist are: a) not doing what they are preaching (eg child therapist but they are child rapist, or preach how to be a good wife but actually a serial cheater) and b) sexual predators, are big no for me.
One thing I gotta consider especially with r Kelly is that sometimes u can’t separate the art from the artist. Since most of his songs are ab romance or sex I can’t listen to them the same way. That’s why it’s easier when it comes to someone like Ye or Spacey because the majority of the time what they do/say doesn’t directly change my perspective on the art
I think it honestly depends. I find myself having an easier time separating when I know I only came for the music or art piece first, not really going into their personality. However, I find it hard with entertainers such as RUclipsrs because I came for their personality and what they have to say or react to. So when they do something God awful, it becomes harder to separate as that’s apart of their personality.
Nowadays not even celebrities have 100% privacy like they used to. But they're prestige and high pedastil still hasn't changed. So once we see how much of a trainwreck they actually are, we immediately feel as if we were betrayed.

Another artist like this is Walt Disney. Lots of terrible rumors about him, but his work really is to be enjoyed.
Walt Disney had been pushing witchcraft to children “See the MAGIC of Disney”

For me, when it comes to separating art from the artist, it depends on each "art". There are some TV shows and movies that were created by a terrible person, but it's easy for me to separate them because they weren't the only one who made it, there's a whole group of people who worked on it.

@@coltonwilkie241 Bro's built different

11:04 saying this is actually like talking to a brick wall
It depends on the type of art, sometimes artists create art that talks about the darkness within us or something really personal, or maybe art that takes some form of moral high ground, so when they get caught doing something terrible I feel like those thoughts linger in your head preventing you from fully enjoying the art in the same way
I think it is possible to separate art from the artist, just not every single time
again in the end its mostly a you problem deal, you decide how you react to it and aslong as no more damage comes from it its understandable.
@@alexcat6685 I think Timothee Chalamet is the inverse of this.
I mean, to be fair to S&M the title alone tells you what the song is about. It's not her fault people don't pay attention.
I make dis like degen check them out if y’all dont mind 😂❤

Piracy. Problem solved.
I've seen people who will hate on the art because of what the artist did, and so I love the fact that you're speaking out about this for others to hear.
I really like this video. It reminded me of the shows I once loved, and that I'm still allowed to love them.
That’s why I don’t care about the opinion’s of strangers/haters, they don’t add anything to my life.
The difficulty of separation depends on the 'art' made:
An actor in a movie is just playing a character in the movie. Someone else could have played that same character.
For paintings and drawings, you only see the art without necessarily seeing the artist, and so one can more easily "overlook" the shittiness of the artist.
For music, you are directly listening to the artist. The song is more directly linked to the artist than an actor in a movie, for example.

bro predicted what kanye was going to say
I agree with you about separating the art from the artist but there's some cases where you simply can't, for example there was this one very popular children's writer who was a therapist and would write the stories of the kids that would come to him for therapy and it was later revealed that he sexually abused those children and everyone I knew immediately burned his books.
Who was that?
@@darth_autismo the author of a book series called kids tell stories about themselves
So he went from ''Therapist'' to ''The Rapist''.
@Acid Bong I can assure you, this isn’t a well known case in America. Or even if it is, I certainly have no idea who it is
I think it’s when the artist are: a) not doing what they are preaching (eg child therapist but they are child rapist, or preach how to be a good wife but actually a serial cheater) and b) sexual predators, are big no for me.
8:33 AAAAAAH
I love how you explain complex and intelligent things in the dumbest way possible, but it's still somehow intelligently said lol
He made graduation
He made graduation
He made graduation

I think it honestly depends. I find myself having an easier time separating when I know I only came for the music or art piece first, not really going into their personality. However, I find it hard with entertainers such as RUclipsrs because I came for their personality and what they have to say or react to. So when they do something God awful, it becomes harder to separate as that’s apart of their personality.
