To say Brits have no culture is hilariously innacurate. It's quite sad that people from Britain think that. British culture my be syncretic, but that's just another novelty. Britain is so rich in culture that it's hard to summate the many different strands, but I mean man - just go to an art gallery, a concert hall, the West End, a formal dinner, I could go on. Look at the architecture, the history. British history is incredibly rich, people are just afraid to enjoy it in this modern western climate...

In all fairness to them, they dont know it. Hence the reason they claim Britain doesn't have a culture. Ignorance is the reason they dont know. Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Music, Art etc.

100%. Many people have been brainwashed into a colonial guilt mindset, terrified of being "cancelled". If your fear is that the UK has always been an oppressor, that's factually false. Learn about the Barbary slave trade in English people, the Danelaw, the Norman invasions, the Roman invasions, the Anglo-Saxon invasions, the absolute poverty that 99% of Brits lived in until the mid-20th century. It's all just so sad how ignorant folks are of their own history.

I think people are people regardless of where on this planet we are, but our cultures are what define some of us. I'm no history buff, but I seriously doubt the UK is devoid of any culture, and to say that is just dishonest.

Britain of course has a culture, but is that culture something to be proud of. If I were Irish or of African descent or Indian, what pride could I have of the empire and all the other monstrosities of the British. So many of the world’s current problems were caused by the British.

British culture has influenced the world like no other country. The biggest exponents of British culture are, in this order:
    1) Sport:
No other country has invented so many global sports. British sports have over 11 billion fans on the planet.
    2) Language:
The whole world either speaks, or is learning to speak English.
    3) Music:
Google “top 10 bands of all time”. You’ll get hundreds of lists, all different, but they’ll all have one thing in common - the top 10 are always dominated by Brits, no matter which list you look.

@@icilmaa you’re talking about a point in the history and evolution of civilisation when all of Europe was competing to become the biggest colonialists. Everyone was at it. The Spanish plundered South America. The Germans committed genocide in Namibia, the Portuguese traded more slaves than anyone else. No one was innocent. In fact, France still has the most overseas territories of any country in the world right now.
What you’re talking about is called human nature. Humans are the same all over the planet. To point the finger at Britain and ignore everyone else is just prejudice.
Civilisations learn as time goes by: we don’t burn witches anymore, we don’t make people fight to the death anymore for entertainment, we don’t colonise anymore and, we are now learning to stop being racist, sexist and prejudiced…but I see you have still a long way to go in that department.
EDIT: It’s ironic that you say what you say using the World Wide Web, on a computer device - both British inventions - in English.

  • @ellehan3003

the literal definition of culture is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Most of the world shares british culture in one way or another, whether its literature, music, inventions everyone of earth benefits from, ways of thinking, fashion, our laws etc etc. So yeh. Britain has culture. Its just that its so wide spread that it became the baseline for a lot of cultures.

This doesn’t mean criticism isn’t warranted. But it’s a bit obsessive. It’s like when in school, everyone hated the cool loud and obnoxious kids and don’t shut up about how they’re glad they’re not a part of them but lowkey have some envy.

@@kjordywhen he said that English people have no culture and are inherently r'cist, you agree with that? I see...
Despite having our own rich history, spanning two thousand years, developing our own language, endless amounts of great literature by Dickens, Caroll, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Chausser. Classics like Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Tale of Two Cities, Beowulf, King Arthur, Robin Hood, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, MacBeth, Lord or the Rings, I'm not even scratching the surface.
Science, forming the bedrock of paleontology with minds such as Anning and Buckland, immunology, asceptic medical treatment, vaccination, anaesthetics, DNA research, the professionalisation of nursing under Nightingale and Seacole, inventing the telephone with Bell, modern toilets, light bulb with Swan, television, modern sewers with Bazelgette, the progenitor to the computer with Babbage and Turing, steam engine, trains, making endless advancements in modern physics with minds like Newton, Watt, Young, and Hook, again not even getting started.
Not to mention English Common Law, which was the foundation of America's own constitution and laws. Nor to loiter on Britain being at the forefront of global abolition. Yes despite a shameful history of partaking in the practise but the role in ending it can also not be ignored. Part of which being possible because of the large number of significant enlightenment era philosophers.
We have our own distinct architecture, picturesque rural villages, beautiful crystal lake sides and green pastures, accompanied with great painters. Sure, they aren't as famous as Italian and French artists, but so what? Is not being the best the same as having no culture? I certainly love a Victoria sponge cake, or one if the dozens of verities of biscuits we created to go along with our tea drinking habits
Musicians like Holst and Vaughan Williams setting the tone for what many film composers emulate today. To say nothing of Britten, Bridge, Scott, Delius, Rutter, Butterworth, Ireland, Tallis, the Beatles, Adele, Arctic Monkeys, Radio head, a rich folk tradition of songs, rhymes, and ballads hundreds of years old like Scarbarough Fair and Greensleeves and dozens of Christmas carols, I could go on.
Sure our food isn't world class, but it exists, we have our own food. And you know why chicken tikks is our national dish? Firstly, it was invented in Scotland, by British citizens - but ig immigrants and their descendents can't be British? We made it our national dish to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution immigrants have made to our culture, not to steal from theirs.
We have great comedies, comedians, and movies; monty python, dad's army, Paddington Bear, Mary Poppins, James Bond, Trainspotting, Goodnight Mr Tom, Lee Mack, Rhod Gilbert, Kevin Bridges, Sean Lock, Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean), Only Fools and Horses, Doctor Who, Broadchurch, again I could continue, and I don't even watch that much tele.
Sports, we invented football, rugby (the parent of American and Canadian football), cricket, badminton, golf, modern boxing, we were an important country in reviving the Olympic games, as well as hosting the first ever paralympics. We remain, despite the illusions, actually quite impressively placed in most sports, generally too 5 or 10, placing very high on the Olympic records also.
I'm sure there's even more I'm forgetting, almost as much as I'm choosing to leave out. But every aspect of culture there is, Britain has its own. It may not always be the absolute top tier unique and impressive there is in the whole world, but it's ours.
So to say we have no culture and are just a bunch of thieving r'cists is such a hateful and ignorant thing to say. Reducing a thousand years of history in every aspect of culture to a list of atrocities committed in India by a private company and later British government. To ignore everything the people who call this land their home have ever achieved, and to only look at a handful of artifacts in the British museum which ought to go back to their country of origin, and to say because of that that British (which is generally code for English) people are just thieves with nothing unique of our own.
I can't believe you'd say that with a straight face. Is that really what you think of us? Of me? A person you've not even met? That I have no culture, nothing of value to offer this world, no heritage? That I just steal and pillage to compensate for my own cultural inferiority?
To say "English people are essentially r'cists" is the same as saying "Germans are essentially n'zis". It's a horrific and ignorant claim, and comes across like you're somebody who thinks "culture" just means "fancy cooking you invented". It doesn't, it's much more than that
