  • Brandon Lee Figueroa (born December 29, 1996) is an American professional boxer. He is a two weight world champion, having held the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title since October 2024, and previously the World Boxing Association (WBA) Regular version super bantamweight title from 2019 to 2021, and the WBC super bantamweight title in 2021.
Stephen Fulton Jr. is an American professional boxer. He is a former unified super bantamweight world champion, having held the WBO and the WBC titles from 2021 to 2023.
The February 1 light heavyweight clash between David Benavidez and David Morrell at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will have the rematch between WBC featherweight titleholder Brandon Figueroa and Philadelphia’s Stephen Fulton.
Fulton, who won a majority decision over Figueroa in 2021, most recently won a split decision over Carlos Castro in September, in his only bout since suffering a heavy defeat to Naoya Inoue in July 2023. Fulton is 22-1 (8 KOs), while Texas’ Figueroa is 25-1-1 (19 KOs).
The bill will also see the return of Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, 26-3-1 (18 KOs), boxing for the first time since losing his WBA 140lbs title to Jose Valenzuela in Los Angeles. Cruz will meet 22-2-2 (17 KOs) San Diego-based Mexican Angel Fierro, while Mexican prospect Jesus “Mono” Ramos Jnr, 21-1 (17 KOs), will face Jeison Rosario - who is 24-4-2 (18 KOs) - to open the pay-per-view broadcast.
One of boxing’s weirdest title reigns appears to be over, as the WBC’s featherweight rankings now list Rey Vargas as “champion in recess” and former interim titlist Brandon Figueroa as the true champion.
Vargas (36-1-1, 22 KO), a former super bantamweight champion, has fought just twice since edging out Mark Magsayo for the belt in 2022. Rather than immediately defend his title, he attempted to claim the vacant super featherweight belt while Figueroa (25-1-1, 19 KO) beat Magsayo for the interim belt, only to fall short against O’Shaquie Foster.
In a sane world, Figueroa would have welcomed him back to 126 in a title consolidation, but the WBC is not beholden to conventional wisdom or morality. Instead, they let Vargas fight Nick Ball to a draw in March, ordered the title consolidation, then just kinda let it die without comment. I actually sent the WBC an email in August inquiring about why he’s been allowed to go two years without a mandatory title defense and was told “Vargas` situation will be defined in the upcoming WBC convention.”
