Good advice on the chain saw disc. A few years ago I had a kick back with the chain saw disc. It hit me in the stomach and made a 7 inch cut across my gut DO NOT USE THEM PLEASE i have years of experience and it still got me
Sorry to hear that and hope u healed up fine
After following your advice I stuck with a flappy disc, went through quite a few but after a few months I had a really bad kick back into my neck. I was left with a bad graze but had it been a Kutzall extreme, who knows. It happens so fast you don't even see it coming.

I used an angle grinder today for the first time. I took your advice and wore visor, mask gloves, everything with guard on, straight to flap sander. Variable speed BOSCH grinder on medium, flap disc...its AMAZING. I mean... its great for getting wood into the shape you want.
I've got a lot of respect for you for giving that advice. I haven't used my angle grinder yet but i will be taking your advice. Thank you.

EXCELLENT advice. I'd never buy anything more solid than a flap disk. I will never use a Kutzall or one with a chain saw teeth.
Great advice! I would add, take breaks. Most accidents happen when tired or going to fast to get done. As soon as I start to feel tired I stop. Might be because I’m old. Lol

I *love* your no nonsense advice that recognizes getting used to the tool and not just the cutter. This is especially true for smaller people as power tools tend to be designed for average male sizes. You’re awesome. Truly helpful force on the internet for those of us (newbies) who go to the internet for advice!!

Thank you for the safety talk Jordy it was a lot of sense and well worth a look, I have an Arbortech Mini grinder, which comes with several coarse sanding pads and also a multi bladed cutting wheel it is very noisy, so I have to wear ear plugs when I use it which isnt often yet but even though the wheels are small they can get away from you, luckily though the wheels are on a stalk and it is fairly safe. Thanks again Jordy.
Agree with you Jordy those chainsaw things shouldnt be still on the market there absolutely Lethal . i think they must be the most dangerous power tool ever invented
Very good advice. Ben using my dremel with eight inch shaft for a while. Yesterday bought the sander for my grinder and using it now. Will wait till I get used to it before getting the extreme kutzall.
So far so good no screw ups but the sander works so much better to clean up than all the time it takes with the eighth inch dremel. Haven’t yet decided on the foredom yet.

Excellent advice Jordy. As you say, the flex-cut carving disc could dig in unexpectantly and buck violently back at ya. And it will rip whatever is in it's path. Good job bud. Rick.

Very good advice, I have one of those chainsaw disk and I won't use. It's too dangerous. Can jump out your hand or jump back on you anytime and rip you open . Flap disk are better for beginners
Excellent advice - I just started working with my angle grinder and am using a 40 grit flap wheel. It works very well and I like your suggestion to use it for a year, until you really understand the way a grinder works and what it can and can't do.

I have a Makita 4" that used to be my Dad's, so as I'm going to be moving into doing bigger carvings, I've been trying to learn everything about the tools and safety in using them. Not sure what features are on the grinder I have, so I'll have to look it up.
I've heard that the more aggressive shaping disks and bowls designed for wood carving do tend to have alot of kickback, so I think the flap disk you were showing would for sure be safer. Still, the grinders are powerful tools, so I think if I decide to use it, I'll try and find a qualified instructor. I want to have fun creating stuff, not gain injury.

Very good advice, I'm a newbie woodworker and considering getting a grinder for shaping woods, but also seen some horror stories on youtube that just makes me think again. For sure the flap discs are the way to go for me. Much safer.

I've wanted very much to incorporate some power carving in my woodworking, and I've bought and given away my angle grinder 3 times now because I just don't feel comfortable with my hands that close and the possibility for kickback. Using the flappy disc to get into it may seem like a way forward. Any videos you want to put out to show how to efficiently remove material with the flappy would be great. Great advice! I used an angle grinder 1st time on Tuesday - the shaper disc kicked back, handle hit my chest then blade sliced my arm, now googling with a sling and 7 stitches! I'd done my research, done a tutorial with an expert, wore chainsaw trousers, boots, head gear but bare arms. Not going to let it stop me but obviously keen to avoid this again or anything worse.

I recently started power carving and picked up an arbortech mini carver which doesn't have as powerful a kickback due to its smaller wheel. I also recently started using a battery angle grinder for my metal work and found that it stops when it grabs rather than kicking back. Im yet to use it for power carving but think that the stopping in a stiuation that would ordinarily cause a kickback is a good thing. I have used the flapdisc for smoothing larger carvings and really like it. I agree that it could be used for shaping but it will be slower

Wow. Thanks for the video. This is great news to hear your ideas. I have a grinder with a few of these flap discs that came in a kit & had no idea what to do with them. I am just now ready to work on carving with some dried logs for the first time. I went & pulled out one of these flap disks ready to use.
I'm also planning on using just hand saws for big cuts. I learned a lesson a year ago or so, when I needed to slice a 4x4 up, ripping, not cross cutting, through a long length & managed to pull it off in not too much time. It opened my eyes to possibilities. I now got a bow saw to try which I think will go even faster. And I plan to try a reciprocating saw for some cuts (especially vertical, where I can just hold the tool with gravity)... I now also bought an oscillating multi-tool w/ long japanese cut wood blades, after seeing people slice thin slices of wood off. I want to try that, & use all of the wood, rather than shredding it to dust everywhere, which also serves the goal of safe options as a beginner.

Good advice Jordy. Any time any body uses any tool the first thing they should do is be as safe as possible. I used to weld for a forestry company. I've had an hour or 3 of grinder practice.

Thank you for this. I'm making a stool and want to concave the seat, I've seen a lot of folks do this with an angle grinder. I was wondering if a flap wheel could be enough to accomplish this, or if I needed to get one of those gnarly shaping wheels. I've got experience with routers, table and circular saws, ect , but never touched a grinder. I believe your video has sent me down the safest path. Thank you for sharing your experience and advice 🙏

Loving the Kutzall shaping discs but DO find can be a bit too aggressive for jobs desiring a finer surface finish. Going to try those flap discs tomorrow!

Also something about those paddle on/off grinders they will kill your hand trying to hold it on but give it some time you can build up the strength to hold it on for long periods

I use a sewing machine pedal is a perfect speed gauge for me since my Harbor freight does not have a dead man switch. You are absolutely right, I was planning on changing up to something that had throttle on it. My next carving is the Cedar in the backyard it died so I'm going to carve a thrown out of the stump and figures about 10' by 6' And no foot throttle is going to help me out with that.
As far as those rookies are concerned yes you will take a chunk out of yourself with every blade that you put on for the 1st 2 years I wear shoulders pants welding gloves welding apron and a fencing mask and thinking about putting in a dog collar & corks but for now my steel toes have to do.
Note nobody out there should be Kochy, carve was two other people available 10 minute sessions no more [[NO BEER]]!

If your dust mask wasn’t on you would have to carve a new nose. That’s why I always make a mold of all my body parts with a scanner. Woodworking is dangerous if i loose a limb I have a backup plan, lol

Any time I am using a grinder, I am wearing a full face mask!!!!!!!!! Glasses and dust mask are NOT ENOUGH. Face mask worn much cheaper than emergency room/hospital bill.🤕
