  • In this video, I move the fuel pump to stop the fuel from syphoning, causing backfiring and heavy smoke on start up. I install a combustion air intake as well as test the current draw using a power supply. #dieselheater #diy #vevor #chinesedieselheater #heater

To be honest the siphon/pressure is going to be the same when you you work the air out. The only reason that the smoke would stop is since the fuel level is now lower. I would guess it will go right back to smoking when you fill the fuel all the way back up. Need to lower the tank.

Oh, and great idea on the air inlet using the metal port. I used one for my exhaust and never thought using the same thing for my intake. 👍

I just thought it would make it look nice and tidy. Which is not something I normally do but in this case it works😁

it does,nt matter where you put the tank or the pump ,above or below . the pump will only deliver a set amount of fuel ,gravity has no part in it at all . i think your over thinking the problem ,what i would do ,is get rid of that crap green fuel line ,and get the solid fuel line . this will get rid of any bubbles in the fuel line and less vibration . backfiring and white smoke is usually a sign of low voltage to the heater or a blocked breather hole to the atomizer . i,ve had my heater now for 2 years ,if your running your heater at low for an extended time . i would advise you to run the heater on the maximum setting for 10 minutes before shutdown .this will clear the burn chamber of any soot build up from running at low setting .

no matter where the pump is located....
the heater NEEDS to be higher up then the tank.
    thats all !
pump can be below the tank for better priming. (and angled 25-30° upwards to the heater)
18.5 is for 0.0185 ml per click. the 5 and fake 8kw units use 0.022ml per squirt pumps.

Glad you have it sorted. Thanks for sharing the update 😀. I'd never considered the siphoning issue but then again, I've not yet installed my two heaters.
It would be good to know the fuel consumption now that you've mounted the inlet on the outside so that you're not drawing cold air from the vaccuum when it's on the inside.

I believe the syphoning to have been very minor as when I took the fuel line off, nothing passed through the fuel pump, but it must have been just enough to have pushed a few drops into the combustion chamber causing the smoke.
The fuel consumption at our current ambient temperature of around 0°c daytime and -7c to -10c at night with the heater inside set to 8°c has been amazing. It’s been running for the last 18 days with no top up on fuel. It’s getting close to empty now. Ill be filming a hopefully short update of its consumption today and possibly address a few comments.
      Thanks for watching!😁

@@Moes_Adventures very impressive on the fuel consumtion - glad you have it all sorted out for yourself.

Very wise to move pump position as the syphon issue can be a pain. The other thing is having that sharp bend where the exhaust exits the wall can cause flooded fuel to collect there. Gentler slope the ideal. Trying to sort same issues on mine.

Ive had a semi that had a diesel heater like this, always called it the bunk heater, and it always smoked a bit on cold startups and the fuel tank and pump are all below the heater and smoked more when I was in much colder weather. I once even had a forklift driver tell me my truck looked to be on fire because it cooled down enough in a few minutes in BC to do its entire cold start again and smoked up around the truck. the owner had ridiculous idle off timers on the trucks so I had to run the heater while getting loaded just to keep the cab warm while strapping a load

Ahh yes, good ol carriers trying to save a penny everywhere they can at the cost of driver comfort. Hopefully they let you idle in the hot summer days or have an APU. Thanks for watching!

I have the 8kw version and it draws more amps for sure, I need to put my clamp meter on and take a reading). I have noticed on the BT App that voltage drops significantly when the glow plugs turns on and in some cases the unit codes. But, when this was happening, I would get smoke as you did. For me is was a camper converter issue. I switched to a 30amp AC to DC converter and the voltage on the App doesn't drop like before and no smoke.
I would be interested in seeing what your voltage drop is when using the battery power source and monitoring the voltage from the app.
I have since switched mine to be powered directly off the batteries in my camper and it starts up and runs. Going through the camper convertor is a no go for me.

Thats good to know for when i install one in my bus. Best to run it directly to the battery. Just have to keep and eye and make sure i dont discharge the battery too much.

You really haven't changed anything. Fuel will still siphon as the burner is still lower than the fuel inlet. Fuel is likely seeping past the diaphragm/valves in the pump while its off and collecting in the burner. You will likely need to install a shutoff valve in the line, change the pump, or move the heater above the fuel tank.
