My issue is when I get hypersensitivity from retinoids or other products my skin will tolerate almost nothing. Even barrier repair creams burn, sting and sometimes itch, plus gentle cleaners also sting. I find I just have to wait it out 4-5 days then it starts to settle down.

Try a moisturizer like Avene tolerance emulsion, it’s a godsend for extremely sensitive skin as it absolutely has no preservatives just in case you might get irritated from them when your skin barrier is damaged.

Adapolene was making my skin insane! The dryness, the cracking, itching, burning etc...even my eyelids became irritated, dry, and slightly swollen (and I never put it anywhere near my eyes.) My mistake was using it daily right off the bat. What made a huge difference was switching to LA Roche Posay's hydrating (non foaming) gentle cleanser, using their Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer *before* my adapolene at night and letting it soak in a good 30 min. Then during the day and my off days I use La Roche Posays Ciciplast B5 Baume. That stuff has been a life saver. Plus, for being as thick as it is, it dries down surprisingly well. With this routine I've been able to use my adapolene every other day without the insane irritation. Still not ready to use it once a day, but maybe in a few more weeks. Also, my skin is looking just better in general with this routine.

    • @jenk4443
      @jenk4443 3 года назад +1

How come you don't use the LRP baume with the adapolene? Curious because I do and I wonder if it's too occlusive to allow adapolene to work as effective as it could.

This winter I developed flaking from my .02% tretinoin that I'd not experienced in the previous six months. I kept using it daily, but used a much richer moisturizer as a buffer and got a richer moisturizing spf. It cleared up in a couple of months and, as the weather changed, I've not had problems going back to my previous routine of applying it to clean skin and moisturizing on top.

I’m an esthetician so I obviously don’t know as much as Dr Sam. But two things I’ve learned that help mitigate irritation aside from buffering, is a Galactomyces Serum (I use one from Mitomo). SO hydrating and no fragrance. Another is the CosRx Snail Mucin Essence. Also super hydrating, healing, and fragrance free. I still started at .025 at 3x weekly over a moisturizer, despite my false confidence, and I can’t stress how wrong I was in thinking I was immune from the purging phase. I have been reading endless Reddit threads and videos and it’s been keeping me from quitting because EVERYONE seems to experience it. I was humbled lmao, but I’m only 2.5 weeks in! I have super sensitive, dehydrated, mature skin. I've done well with retinol, but I couldn't postpone using trentinoin any longer. I started over 2 months ago buffering and using it once very 5 days. By the fourth application, my skin was screaming at me! I had to stop for 12 days, repair my skin barrier, stripped down my routine, switched my beloved super hydrating moisturizer for the unelegant but highly effective Cerave, and lowered the frequency to once a week for 3 weeks. I then increased to once every 5 days, and I have added glycolic oat extract, and glycolic calendula excract which I bought from an old fashioned style chemist. This has helped immensely to prevent and diminish irritation. Now I'm up to twice a week. I feel so accomplished, ha! I keep telling myself your words: "This is a marathon, not a race ." Thank you for the reinforcement, and the explanation on how to proceed.

I still feel clean and refreshed. 2) Lowering my Vit C % in the AM, or skipping some days. 3) Definitely applying over moisturizer. and 4) if necessary cutting down to every other day, knowing I will still get the benefits. Hope you see this dr. Sam🙏🏻 i really want to do the retinoid sandwich now that im restarting, but my moisturizer has hyalauronic acid, im still indecisive because maybe it will make my retinol penetrate deeper than it should be and just cause me irritation. Should i still go with it or just apply it after my retinol?
Love all your informative vid though. lots of love❤️

I have been on 00.5% Tretinoin for 8 months and I have no problems at all. My skin is a little drier, but otherwise everything is ok. I use the cream 5 days a week. At first I wondered if I was doing something wrong. :)

I'm on tretinoin 0.05 once daily. At first there was itching, redness and flaking, but now my skin tolerates it better and i can see tge improvement. My skin has become smooth and pigmentation mark has lightened a bit. There's no itching or redness now but there is a lot of flaking. Is flaking a sign that i should stop using it or is it okay to continue?

This video is so timely for me. I use Medik8 Crystal Retinaldehyde 1 (!!) in the evening and in the morning a Vitamin C and the Brightly Serum - my forehead is red, blotchy and tight and you can see scaling. What I wonder about is why I suddenly have the problem. I always use buffers. In the past I used a more intense retinaldehyde without any problems, I used the same Vitamin C and other actives with it - no problems. And suddenly my skin acts up! I will do as you suggest and skip all actives. However, I was wondering if The Ordinary's Niacinamide + Zinc would help repair the barrier? Or better not use it? I bought the Cicaplast Baume today.

I ended the 4th month of using tretinion. I started using daily after a month. Even though I have no problems with my skin but I'm using it for fine wrinkles.
But I made one mistake weeks ago I dyed my hair but forgot to take two night off of tretinion. I really suffered for 3 days. My eyes was almost closed and it affected my whole face also my neck. It was super painful. So I hope girls who use tretinion and dye their hair to be more cautious about this point.
Thank you for you helpful video Dr 🙏❤️

Rx retinoids should come with instructions. The first time I use it it was a nightmare. Now I introducing it again very very very slowly. Every 4 days with moisturizer (ALAWAYS) for 1.5 month. Then I'll switch to every 3 days for 1.5 month. If at any moment irritation or purge start I'll back up again. The days that I don't use tretinoin I use CwraVe Retinol I just love all the ingredients and is not as irritating and always follow with moisturizer. I hope this could help someone.

I turned 20 last Nov and started retinol this month and just a few uses have made my skin dry and I have these scaly patches on my inner cheeks and nose and forehead...
And guess what? I was also using a foaming Aha cleanser for washing my face and I guess it also irritated my skin further as it has a cleansing brush as applicator 😭
Now I am off the whole routine and just using a mild soap and moisturizer until the irritation settles and the barrier repairs itself.

Hi Dr, I'm in my 50's my skin was in a very good place. I started using tretinoine 0.25 pea size with a gentle moisturiser thrice a week at night.....for rejuvenation & youthful skin. It ruined my texture. Caused orange peel texture with dents, large pores & dull skin.
I used it for over a month and a half not realising what it was doing to my skin. There was no redness or irritation as such & exfoliation was mild. I'm extremely upset.

Hi Dr Sam, what are your thoughts on using a toner after cleansing prior to application of tretinoine cream 0.05%, keeping in mind it is an alcohol-free toner with a minimalistic ingredient list? I've heard many dermatologists advise against using a toner while using tretinoine but I think it gives my skin that additional initial hydration layer it needs.
