William is my cousin!! His mom and my dad = siblings. ❤ His sister shared this RUclips video with me and I love being able to see him and his life he lives now! Love you Billy!
We lived out there for 4 years. Incredible experience. Definitely not for everyone but to those who get it it is very rewarding. Excellent video. Aloha to William, your place looking good. Mahalo for the video.
Wow that's incredible living on a lava field! So many really sweet looking houses too. In theory, I like the idea of living off grid, in reality I don't know how long we'd manage! How wonderful of the local people to invite you for food. I really do think that people who have been through the biggest communal hardships show the most kindness to others!
We thought the same, we loved it there but wondered how long could we be able to go w/o missing the things that we are used to. The community there is really close that all know each other which is so awesome!
We watched a'a lava fill in the famous Black Sand Beach at Kalapana and listened to the kumus chanting while rock by rock lava filled the Bay at Kaimu and left a brand new black sand beach. The Hawaiian families cleaned their homes, left offerings for Pele and left. Local haoli watched in tears as their homes caught fire and burned. I am interested to see how many have homesteaded, building tiny homes along the dozed road. What a lovely life style for those who aren't in their 80's like we are. We have a lot in the area, but since we bought it, we both got cancer & the building codes changed, prohibiting us from doing leach field septic and lots of other reasons we were never able to build. Mostly $$+age.
@@richgrant4024 If you have ever watched a flow, you will know that you don't need to have fireworks. Pele provides plenty of them. Just start chanting :-)
Those little Kalapana lots are really amazing. Would love to have a lil spot down there to escape from the mountain occasionally and play on. I always dream of turning one into a little green oasis in the middle of the lava. There are a lot of trials and struggles in getting started, and It’s definitely not for everyone, but I absolutely love it. 😀
This is not a new concept, I have known people to build there since 2008. In fact I helped a friend build his home on the lava field. Don’t forget, this whole area had lava flowing up to April of last year, and the lava was flowing for a good portion of 35 years. Please respect this community. They have been through alot over the last 30 years.
Just Be Out ok, what about the people who have lived there for generations? they do not appreciate the flood of tourists gawking at their community. They have been trying for years to put a stop to the popup bed and bath homes. I live here you don’t, just please be respectful.
@@janicenorman6712 We are VERY Respectful. In this vlog we are being informative. While here we spoke to many of the people who have lived here for over 30 years. I'm sure this is not a place tourists will flock to, if that was the case this would have been flocked a long time ago. It's actually the locals that are putting up the popup bed and bath so clearly, they want people there. Again I stress. We are not being disrespectful. This vlog is clearly just informative and based on our experience there. there is nothing "disrespectful" here.

This video is the basis for my inaugural "Nope List." That's "nope" as in "nope, you'll never see me there" in this case. I'm glad you two enjoyed the experience, but for me... nope. And with that said, here we go: -"Recent 2018 eruption." Nope. -"Standing right on top of the lava field." Nope. -"I'm in the middle of nowhere." Nope. -"Outdoor shower, outdoor bathroom." Nope. -"It is possible to live right on top of the lava rocks." Nope. -"Maybe if you come here..." Nope. -"Right behind this wall, there is a chicken coop." Okay, given it's a volcanic area, I was expecting the video to cut to a bucket of KFC. -"Nothing like fresh coconut water." She says after wielding Thanos' bigger knife to cut it. -"The lava came down with fury and it destroyed over 700 homes." This resumes my "Nope" list. -"This was once lush vegetation and now it's all gone." Nope. -"Some of these people have lived here 30 years and their homes keep getting destroyed, but they keep coming back." Nope. Plus, that is pretty much the definition of insanity. 😂 -"The lava flowed down in the shape of a pitchfork." That's a "NOPE" signed by Satan. I'd say to Hell with that, but... well... pitchfork. -"There are two types of lava." Yes, the kind you get away from and the kind that fries your butt to a crispy, crackly crunch. Nope. I figure that's enough for this first edition of the "Nope List." I'll watch the video until the end secure in the knowledge that you two had a great time and that NOPE, I'll never follow suit. At least, I won't go anywhere near to a sleeping cauldron of fiery and explosive death. Volcano = a stationary Godzilla. Nope. 😀
It really is not for everyone. But!! Lets not forget, Kalapana was destroyed in 1989-1990 by lava, it can and most likely will happen again. When? Who knows. But, be aware this fact when visiting.
I think it's crazy to build on a lava field. When the next eruption comes you will have to be evacuated and could possibly lose your life, when you have been fully warned of the danger! I think the State of Hawaii should not allow building on known lava fields.
Totally agree, however they do have advanced systems implemented for evacuations. Last year when the eruption this entire area was effected, homes were destroyed however everyone was evacuated days before. The locals totally understand the land and respect it. But yes it is a very unusual way to live. I guess one good thing is that all the lava has been drained so another eruption is not likely for a while 🤞🏻

I wanna buy down there, but if Pele comes, I'm not only leaving her gifts, I'm filling my place to the brim with fireworks and throwing a party.

William is awesome! Those glamping bnb is amazing

Any health concerns being so close to the lava? I think I will check out Mountain View.

Hopefully you are right, but you just never know!
She can destroy your area too
She always does and they rebuild every time. It’s the risk these people take.
Why would you want to live there! Nothing nice about that.
