Michael said the following about Stranger in Moscow:
"Stranger in Moscow was written when I was in Moscow on the Dangerous Tour, it was just a strange, eerie, lonely time for me. Outside my hotel was just a sea of faces of fans chanting and screaming, but I was inside my room and I felt so all alone, like I was the last person on the planet. In the song, I say "how does it feel when you're alone and you're cold inside? Like a stranger in Moscow", that's pretty much how I felt. The people were lovely, they were some of the nicest people I've ever met and the concert was very successful, but especially that day, I just felt this different feeling and the song Stranger in Moscow came to me, so that's how that was written."
Very sad 😢 but I'm so happy you liked it! It's a masterpiece in my opinion ❤

"I'm living lonely! I'm living lonely baby!" The complete anguish and dispair in his voice as he sings that! Such a constant theme in his songs! He always talked about how incredibly lonely he felt, can't imagine during this time when he must have felt like the world was out to get him or against him, he must have felt so out of place, so heartbreaking 😢💔💔

The narrative at the end means "Why have you come from the west? Confess! To steal the great achievements of the people, the accomplishments of the workers..." apparently, this is what I found about it:
"Within the context of the song, this narrative can be seen as a metaphor for the feeling of being constantly watched and unfairly accused, something the singer also expresses in the song. The phrase could symbolize the pressure and distrust the singer feels, whether from the media, the public, or external forces that question his intentions and alienate him.
Thus, this Russian narrative ends the song by reinforcing the theme of persecution, constant surveillance, and the feeling of being a “stranger” or an outsider, both literally and figuratively. He feels that he is being unfairly judged and accused, and this pressure is a reflection of the broader tensions between the West and the East at the time, something that he internalizes in his personal experience of isolation and suffering."

Hi Seph I'm still here!! ❤❤ I've been soo busy with personal matters and work!! But I've been watching when I can, not commenting much! So here is some information to make up for it:
Michael wrote that song in a hotel room in Moscow. He was inspired by an intense sense of loneliness he felt in his hotel room in spite of thousands of fans chanting his name outside. The song portrays the emotions of disillusionment, alienation, isolation, betrayal, anguish and loneliness. Produced out of chaos in Michael Jackson's life written in response to being accused of child sex abuse in 1993 (which was false). The song is about a man who is trying to have his voice heard while he is being crucified by the media. The average joe looked at Michael with all his money and fame and had no empathy for him. But with this song, he's expressing severe loneliness and unhappiness, the media had really turned against him and most of his so called friends abandoned him. So sad 😢😢

Yea I think people refer to this album as the stages of grief and I reckon they’re on point with that tbh. 😢
You can feel his pain, the sheer breadth of his loneliness and despair and I think the mellowness of the track only adds to that and underlines his quiet desperation and his struggle to keep on going.
He was in a bad way, he wrote this when in Moscow in 93 amidst all the allegations and on the dangerous tour as everything piled up and got so bad that he had to go to rehab. It’s the video you did of him visiting the orphanage, during that trip.
I’m paraphrasing but he’s said in interviews about his struggles with terrible loneliness that he’s most alone when in the hotel rooms because you have all these adoring fans surrounding you outside but you feel trapped inside alone and I can only imagine maybe that’s how he felt when writing Stranger in Moscow in his hotel room after the allegations and everything hit.
I read a timeline of 1993 and it’s appalling and disturbing the amount of horrible things that happened to him in the span of a few months. This is a small summary that I got from a site that seems to have documented his trajectory:
August 4: Pellicano & Chandler make their demand for $20 million.
August 18 : Bert Fields and Anthony Pellicano inform Michael that the Los Angeles Police Departments Sexually Exploited Child Unit has opened a criminal investigation on him.
August 20 : Michael cancels the filming of “Is This Scary”.
Debbie Rowe :”Michael was getting ready to go on tour. It was after the Sasaki surgery (for his scalp). He wasn’t completely off the Demerol, but he was right there. He was on Toradol, which is a non-narcotic, and he was right there. And it was a fight to get him there, because he had such fear of the pain that what would happen if we didn’t catch it before it gets to a certain point, then you have to go overboard. And he was doing so well, and I didn’t want anything to get screwed up”
August 21 : Michael arrives in Taipei. One hours later, Michael takes another flight to Bangkok, to kick off the third leg of his Dangerous World Tour. The Los Angeles Police Department serve search warrants on Michael’s Neverland Valley Ranch in Santa Barbara.
August 24 : Michael gives a concert at the Stadium in Bangkok after the allegations go public. (There’s a famous picture of him during one of the Bangkok shows and it shows his makeup all smeared as he arrives onstage looking like he’d been crying.)
Dr Finklestien & Dr Forcast give him morphine after the show.
August 25 : Michael’s second concert in Bangkok is rescheduled to august 26 because Michael is suffering from acute dehydration
August 26 : Michael’s concert is again rescheduled for august 27 (he releases an audio-taped message to his fans).
August 27 : Michael finally performs his second concert in Bangkok.
    August 29 : Michael gives a concert in Singapore on his 35th birthday;
August 30 : Police search Michael’s hotel room at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. The second concert in Singapore is cancelled when Michael collapses backstage moments before the show is due to begin, suffering from a severe migraine. (I’m assuming due to the burns on his scalp.)
August 31 : Michael undergoes a brain scan in hospital and he releases a second audio-taped message to apologize for the late cancellation of his concert.
September 12 : Michael arrives in Moscow, Russia.
September 14: He writes Stranger in Moscow.
    (Tour Continues)
Early October : Tony Jackson, a cousin of Michael with whom he had a close relationship dies in a car accident aged 35. Michael pays for the funeral and decides to support Tony’s wife Debra and their 7 year old child Anthony.
October 31 : Second concert in Mexico City. Michaels Grandfather, Samuel Jackson dies at the age of 90.
November 2 : Michael cancels his third Mexican concert due to a severe toothache.
November 4 : Michael receives oral surgery to have an abscessed molar extracted and stays in hospital overnight.
November 7 : Third concert in Mexico City.
November 8 : While the Jackson family is in Phoenix for Samuel Jackson’s funeral, the police raid Hayvenhurst and Howard Manning flies to Mexico City to take a deposition from Michael for a copyright infringement lawsuit brought by three songwriters claiming “Thriller”, “The Girl Is Mine” & “We Are The World” were stolen from them. The three hour deposition is video taped and leaked later to the press.
November 9 : Fourth concert in Mexico City.
Debbie Row said she told MJ in Mexico City that he had a problem with drugs. “I said you’re taking too much, you can’t take this forever.” Rowe said MJ was supposed to go to Puerto Rico after Mexico City, but never made it. “He was a hot mess, Rowe said when she saw him in Mexico City. He was depressed, he had taken something, I don’t know what he had taken or who he had gotten it from, Rowe recalled. He was on something, that he was taking something. I thought he was back on Demerol, Rowe said. I walked into the room, his suites were never a mess. The suite was a mess. He wasn’t kept, he was always kept. He wasn’t making eye contact, he wasn’t speaking, he didn’t make sense when he did and he said was having problem with his scalp again. We got in a fight, Rowe said. “I’m hot headed, I went off on him about Dr Forecast.” I was angry that Dr Forecast had intercepted Dr Metzger, that Dr Forecast had undermined everything that was done to keep him off of Narcotics.
November 10 : Second day of Michael’s deposition in Mexico in the copyright infringement lawsuit. The deposition is videtaped and later leaked to the press.
November 11 : Michael performs the 69th and last concert of the Dangerous World Tour in Mexico City.
November 12 : Michael leaves Mexico and finally lands in England. Michael announces in an audio-taped message that he is cancelling the rest of the tour in order to seek treatment for an addiction to painkillers.
November 13 : In the early morning hours, Michael is secretly moved to the Nightingale Hospital, a private mental health facility in Lisson Grove, Marylebone, London.
November 14 : A spokesman for Pepsico announces their partnership with Michael Jackson is over.
November 16 : Police obtain a strip search warrant for Michael Jackson in order to verify a description of his genitals given by Jordy.
November 19 : Michael’s longtime personal assistant Norma Staikos quits her job and leaves the US for Greece. She is replaced later by Evvy Tavasci (who will be Michael’s PA until his death in 2009). Elton John helps Michael to find a better rehab facility at a private estate oustide London.
December 20 : Los Angeles Police Department and Santa Barbara Department go to Neverland with a search warrant. They take photographs of Michael’s body and penis.
December 22 : Live from Neverland and around the world, Michael makes a 4 minutes statement where he claims his innocence and reveals that earlier this week he was forced by the LAPD and SBPD to submit to a photo session of his body.
Like how nuts is that? During a few months he literally had the betrayal of the allegations happen (and face the public scrutiny/backlash and no doubt tell his family and try to comprehend it all) two family members die, a deposition accusing him of copying songs, a bunch of physical health problems, the police raiding everything, whilst still going on stage to perform and do a tour and he had to go to rehab and then be violated by the police. It’s heartbreaking and it’s disgusting and I honestly don’t know how he did it. Like even ONE of those things would be traumatic for anyone but to get through all that? In such a short space of time?

The song seems to portray a deep sense of isolation and the struggle to deal with one's inner demons and loneliness, exploring the idea of feeling isolated even in the midst of fame and success. Although he is a public famous figure, the singer feels distant and disconnected from the world, as if he were an outsider, even in familiar places. The reference to the KGB, (an abbreviation for the Russian phrase Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, which translates to Committee for State Security in English), may be a metaphor for the constant persecution, coldness and oppression he feels, from the media, society's expectations, or his own mind. The singer is referring to the feeling of being relentlessly watched or pursued, as if he were always under external control or pressure. The KGB, historically associated with rigid control and repression, here represents the oppression he feels, from the media, the public, or external forces that won't leave him alone. It sounds like he is begging to be left alone, as if people or the media are constantly using his name, fame, and image without considering his humanity or emotions. It is a plea for them to stop exploiting or persecuting him, allowing him to live in peace and privately, without being continually harassed or judged.
The main theme is loneliness, even when surrounded by people, and the search for some kind of release or comfort, something the singer can't seem to find in the world around him. The song explores the internal struggle between maintaining a public facade and the private pain he carries.
This song is so beautiful yet heartbreaking... poor Michael I can not even imagine such scrutiny and torment, having no choice but to self isolate to protect yourself, feeling trapped and lonely 💔💔😥😥😞

This is a beautiful breakdown of the lyrics and themes as they relate to his life. I will say the KGB line was literal. He was being hidden from the world’s media by the Russian government and they had State Police watching his every move while he was there. Dallas Austin talks about it in a few interviews.

there is a cute little video of Michael in the studio recording Stranger In Moscow in 1994 where he asks a young boy in the room to shout out to Michael. Michael turns his back to the boy (ten paces away from him) and says that he'll face the boy when he calls Michael loudly enough. the boy calls him 5 to 10 times in his language each time louder than the last. this is being recorded by the studio equipment. when Michael was satisfied with the final take, he turns back to the boy and smiles. that is what you hear at 3:57 in the song's instrumental solo. the subtle, haunting echo of a child's voice calling to Michael.

"Stranger in Moscow" ~ Is a song by American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson from his ninth studio album titled, "HIStory: Past, Present And Future Book I". The song was released as the sixth and final single worldwide on November 4, 1996 by Epic Records. The track was written in September 1993, while on the Dangerous World Tour stop in Moscow. The song's meaning lyrically conveys a sense of desolation and longing for connection amid a chaotic world. The imagery in the song evokes feelings of alienation, with references to being in a foreign place and the emotional weight of fame. The haunting melody and orchestral arrangement further enhance the melancholic tone. Overall, "Stranger in Moscow" captures the complex emotions of a person grappling with their identity and the pressures of public life. An early version of the track's chord structure appears in the video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3; according to conflicting accounts, Jackson and his team composed music for the game before leaving the project. The song's music video depicts the lives of six individuals, including Jackson, who are left isolated and disconnected from the world around them. "Stranger in Moscow" charted highly in the top 10 of numerous countries music charts worldwide, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. However it only peaked at number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Jackson's lowest ever top rank of a song on the US singles chart. The song was performed on the HIStory World Tour in 1996 - 1997. "Stranger in Moscow", like several other HIStory tracks, was Jackson's response to recent events in his personal life. In 1993, the relationship between Jackson and the press soured entirely when he was falsely accused of child sexual abuse. Though not charged with a crime, Jackson was intensely scrutinized by the media during the criminal investigation. Complaints about the coverage and media included using sensational headlines and headlines that implied guilt, accepting stories of Jackson's alleged criminal activity and leaked police material in exchange for money, deliberately using unflattering pictures of Jackson, and a lack of objectivity. The coverage upset Jackson and damaged his health. Jackson's health had deteriorated such that he canceled the remainder of his Dangerous World Tour and went into rehabilitation. The media showed him little sympathy. The Daily Mirror held a "Spot the Jacko" contest, offering readers a trip to Walt Disney World if they could correctly predict where the entertainer's next appearance would be. A Daily Express headline read, "Drug Treatment Star Faces Life on the Run", while a News of the World headline accused Jackson of being a fugitive. These tabloids also falsely alleged that Jackson had traveled to Europe to have cosmetic surgery that would make him unrecognizable upon return. Geraldo Rivera set up a mock trial, with a jury made up of audience members, even though Jackson had not been charged with a crime. (This Song/Short Film of “Stranger In Moscow” is a freaking masterpiece and I just love it I love the whole entire HiStory album cause it’s truly his most autobiographical album ever and the fact he wrote this in 1993 in Moscow in his hotel room while dozens & dozens of fans were outside of his hotel screaming his name yet he felt like the loneliest human being on earth while on his Dangerous World Tour it’s so sad and yet genius MJ bared his heart, mind, body and soul into this track right here this is art. The aesthetic of the Music Video itself is just phenomenal Long Live The King Of Music The Greatest Music Artist To Ever Live! Michael Joseph Jackson🥺👑🖤🌧✨And the fact the media/critics ridiculed him for his humanitarian works and impact on music in general surpassing/breaking Beatles, and Elvis’s records it makes me upset but MJ was also a strong man he was once quoted anyone who would’ve been in my shoes would have ended it all and that’s the absolute truth MJ was and will always be Innocent he was so misunderstood as well definitely the most misunderstood artist of all time.)

What I really find deeply regrettable is that you (the headphone generation included) will never hear what this song really sounds like. The incredibly powerful low bass that literally drills into your chest, Michael's voice that blows you away with crystal clarity in the middle of the stereo triangle, the incredibly warm tones that take over the whole room. All the things you can only hear and feel through a pair of good stereo speakers will always be denied to you with in-ear headphones. What a shame.
Michael's albums have always been top class in terms of sound, but the HIStory album sets new standards in this respect.

YES!! STRANGER IN MOSCOW GOT AN S RANK! YET ANOTHER BRILLIANT SONG MICHAEL WROTE. I wish you took out the time to look up the lyrics for this one as you did for they dont care about us. Its one of his best song writing. Rod temperton who wrote thriller said this was the best Michael Jackson song he had ever heard.
It's cute watching you struggle between the emotions of trying to enjoy a very brilliant song, and yet feeling sad at the same time because it is such a haunting sad song. MJ has a way of doing that to ya. Unfortunately this song is yet another underrated song for MJ. It was never a huge hit, at least not in the US, partly because they released the single too late, like over one year after the album was released. It performed much better worldwide as a top 10 hit in many countries including the UK. And it didn't get a lot of radio play so it was his lowest charting hit in the US. It is also surprisingly one of MJs most underrated videos. The cinematography here is absolutely stunning and beautiful as you said, but it didn't get played on MTV a lot either. So many people don't even know it exists

Oh wow, I didn’t know this part. I just read this was the song that inspired HIStory to be a full album, while originally being just a Greatest Hits album with a few new songs. That’s really interesting to find out.

Micheal Jackson’s brother Tito jackson died of a heart attack while driving 5 days ago. He was the third brother to pass away. 1st Brandon (marlon Jackson’s twin brother) who passed after being born. 2nd Micheal and now Tito no longer with us. RIP Tito 😢

Knew this track from his Sonic 3 music influence. )) It plays in the end credits of the game, really hard to miss.
As to background words, it is in pretty square-simple Russian, like a quoting some odd Soviet poetry. Bit hard to hear, but it is something like "Why you came here, confess. .... best impressions, the best works".

I never owned Sonic 3, only had sonic and knuckles as a kid haha
But after reading your comment I looked up and listened to the end credits theme and DAMN!! Yep! That's 100% stranger in Moscow!

Seph where have u been? Did i miss HIStory reactions? OMG...imagine the songs he wrote after 93...this album is packed with all that he went felt and was put through...the loneliness, the dissapointment, he opened up totally and ppl just did not pay attention to lyrics.. Armageddon of the brain...says it all. Sidenote: He has the look of the Stranger in Moscow shot on the images you saw in Square One of him with TJ Jackson where Taj Jacksons brother stripped for a 3T cover shoot bc they literally were there on the set and he quickly hopped over joined their video clip "Why" and took the shooting with them. The rumour that that was some sorts of ab.se attempt surrounded by a filmcrew, make up and hair stylists and two sets, him being so superbusy that his nephews used the breaks to chime him in, literally. Now there is this Ex FBI true crime nonsense type of guy that shops around with this tale for decades, while being used as a credible FBI profiler in true crime broadcasts. His name is Jim Clemente. If you ever google him and see his face ...be aware of his bias.

I noticed that your background music when you're commenting after the music video is way too loud lately. Too me this music is totally unnecessary but if you prefer to use it maybe tune it down a little. It's just my opinion of course.
As for Stranger in Moscow it totally reflects his despair and sadness after the allegations.
