Red-Vented Bulbul | Chirpy with her Humans

We rescued ‘Chirpy’ on the 20th of June 2020. We spotted her hopping her way towards my feet. It was right after sunset near my neighbourhood. We tried but couldn’t locate her nest nearby, and so we brought her home for the night.
We couldn’t tell what kind of a bird was she. She was so tiny! We started feeding her every 1 to 2 hours. Tiring at first but then got used to it.
Everyday she stood right next to me like a shadow. I used to place her on a safe spot from where she could watch me prepare lunch. Every time I chopped colourful veggies she squeaked. I gave her tiny pieces and she gladly relished them. She tried tomatoes, cucumber, jalapeno, peach, apple, beans, spinach, curd and what not. Sooner I realised she loved everything sweet. Her favourite is kaju barfi 😂.
For the first week, I made her a home in my shoe box covered with soft towels (thinking she would fly within a week and leave us). After two weeks, I shifted her to a DIY shelter made of empty carton box, kitchen towel, chopsticks and painted trees and flowers inside.
It was only after sunset that we placed her in her shelter for a comfortable sleep. She had the habit of jumping out of the carton box. One day we lost her amidst our shoes and other packed items as there were many boxes lying on the floor...We were also packing our stuffs to shift to a new house. Found her cozy inside one of our shoe. Phew!!!Lockdown and work from home had made it possible to look after her.
In 3 weeks I noticed the bristle like hair on top of her head. They get raised up and down depending on what she is feeling. It became much easier to find out Chirpy is a Bulbul😄
After a month, chirpy started preening. And she started to bath every single day. (She enjoys her bathing ritual even today). It made more sense to keep her in the sun for sometime. We tried to take her out on our shoulder but crows and kites spotted her and started to gather near us. A cage seemed more safer for her to get out. I stood next to her whenever she was out in the open. Just once I went inside for less than a minute and a Kite started attacking chirpy. I rescued her only to find her scared to death. Fortunately, she was inside her cage.
There’s not much info on how to raise a Bulbul. In some random articles, whatever little info I could gather suggested to feed live worms. Luckily, amazon India has some really good bird foods. Bought a couple of them. Chirpy loved the live worms but she refused to eat other foods like seeds. She got accustomed to eating only cooked food and fresh fruits. I usually buy the bottle containing 200 live worms which gets over in 15-20 days. Till date, I have bought 8 bottles.
She is very intelligent, curious, and a really good observant. She surprises us with a variety of things. Be it imitating her name or making sound just like the ringer of our phone or poking the container with her beak whenever she wants to eat those worms. She knows exactly which box contains chocolates and biscuits and nuts. She is fond of them all. She has both sweet and annoying voice. She uses her sweet voice most of the times. We get to see her angry, happy, sad, scared, playful expressions all the time and it thrills us to see her display all those emotions effortlessly. These days it is not possible to record her activities...she comes flying to me whenever she sees me holding my phone...Being the curious one she wants to watch what’s there on the screen. She enjoys videos that comes with an upbeat music.
Fortunately, our new house has all glass doors and windows. It allows us to get light without opening any of the doors or windows. Now that it is winter, Chirpy wakes up at 9.30 am and sleeps at 6pm. (Yes! It’s shocking for a bird to get up so late🤣). In between she gets all the space to fly from one end of the house to the other end. We as humans have learned to adjust to her safety by not opening any of the doors accidentally without checking with her whereabouts😂. Our new neighbourhood is filled with Birds of prey!
2 and a half months later, I spotted red feathers under her tail. She is a Red-Vented Bulbul! And few weeks later, she started with the most beautiful dance. Usually in the kingdom of birds, the male birds are more attractive, and performs unique movements to attract a female. Well, there are so many questions that I have regarding Chirpy. Now that she is 7 months old and google says the life span of a Bulbul is 11 years, I need to figure out ways to keep her safe, make arrangements where she could find her folks and meet a mate. But most importantly, be 101% sure of her survival in the wild as she is completely domesticated now. A visit to an Ornithologist is the first step for now.
    🧿
🙏Thank you for watching the video and going through this long description. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any inputs or suggestions regarding Bulbuls.

The bird mostly won't go to the wild. As a bird owner I can say. A bird bought up from a baby sees the human as its mother and family. It might go away.... But probably won't

Hey, I think the first step you can take is to prepare her for a soft release... 7 months is a long time but with proper strategy she should be able to go back in the wild soon. I rescued one legged bulbul a while ago, initially it seemed impossible for her to be released back but with time she was able to be back in the wild and that's best part!!

Chirpy is male. And yes this dance is their mating ritual.
Bulbuls can learn any whistle pretty well. Once i rescued a fledgling from my cats, and then i raised him up. He is now 2-3 years old. I tried to release it when he learned to fly but his parents didnt accept him and were hurting him so took him back. Now he lives with us.
Sings, fight with us when he comes out of cage. I wish i could give him worms but i don't know how to het it for him. We give him fruits and cooked egg, rice etc.

After 2hours she is back home caged by other people who found her.
We are going to leave her in open balcony with tall plants again .. lets see if she finds her way to the wild anytime she wants..

Nice to see the video. We too had a bulbul nest at our window. We can see all their activities throughout the day. It is a tedious task for the parents to constantly feed the 3 chicks. In a week, they grew quite big.. the nest was about to collapse. Finally, the parents took them away secretly in wee hours of the morning. Will miss them. Hope they grow up in a safe and secured place.

Sure. I myself didn’t know what exactly constitutes a bulbul diet but I fed my chirpy with ripe fruits of all kinds..finely mashed and puréed when she was a baby. Boiled egg, soft boiled rice, boil dal and so on. Keep a bowl of drinking water and fresh bowl of water for her bath everyday. Slowly I started feeding her live worms purchased from Amazon. Do not worry, bulbuls are one curious being...she would want to taste every food that you eat. 😊 please try to soft-release her once she learns how to fly.

In addition, I personally feel that If you are planning to soft-release your two month old bulbul, please make sure that she is able to fly properly. Secondly, make sure that she has her regular food and water kept in your window from where she is released in case she returns. This might happen for days or weeks. Be prepared to not have her back the first day itself. They get adjusted to the wild in their first venture itself. All the best 👍 If you don’t mind Please do share how it went 😊 Thank you.

    • @pRiyAnkaDagalSanGma
      @pRiyAnkaDagalSanGma  3 месяца назад +1

Hi! She must be already 5-6 months old if her red feathers started to appear. That means feeding every 4-5 hours is fine. Normally, she should be eating on her own whenever she is hungry. You can keep her foods in places where she can have access to, so that she can eat them whenever she is hungry. They don’t eat much, so they keep on snacking throughout the day.
For more nutrients, you can feed her live worms, and yes continue with the bananas and soft fruits. In my case, Chirpy used to sit at the edge of my plate whenever I ate and she used to nibble on foods I ate. I was careful not to keep foods that could choke her.
Hope these answer helps you. Thank you for watching 🙏

Very tame like Chirpy. We want to release it back to the neighborhood, but scared it might be too tame. It's not scare of human at all and no parents to guide it to all the safe sleeping/hiding spot etc.

Hey! I had the exact same fear before soft releasing chirpy. Thatswhy it tookso long along with many other external factors. I released her when she was 11 months old...it was already too late but luckily it was their mating season (spring). Chirpy was visited by other bulbuls. One day she decided to fly away. We thought she would return but no she didn’t return. Before going away chirpy took her time to observe the surrounding from our balcony. I hope yours is a success too :)

Your video was really fun to watch! My brother found a fledgling on the ground and bought the chick home as the parent was not helping the chick to eat for like 2-3 hours, and there were crows and cats roaming around... So like you said as there are not much research material regarding bulbuls I'm looking at whatever help I can online!
I had one question tho, the fledgling bulbul I found kind of has less feathers than I thought, like I can see the skin at some places... Is this natural? Coz chirpy looks like the same in the beginning of the video

Hey thanks for watching my video 🙏 I hope the fledgling is doing good with your brother.
And yes you are correct, when I found Chirpy she also had few bald patches on her body. This is normal I guess. On researching I couldn’t find anything about it. But on a different article I’ve read about how bulbul parents often abandon their babies or throw them out of their nest if they find them to be weak, whose chances of survival is less. I m not sure how do they determine such things. If fledglings with less feathers on their body is one such criteria to determine he/she is weak then most probably chirpy was kicked out of her nest. I am glad I found her. She turned out to be the strongest and the kindest of all 😊

Hi! I understand your dilemma. Well, Chirpy is not with us. She went back to the wild after being spotted by other wild bulbuls. That’s what I had always wanted for her. Yes it was very difficult to see her leave. In my case, Chirpy had to stay with us because of lockdown and the lack of resources we had during that time to contact and meet people from a bird rescue and rehabilitation centre. By the time we got in touch with them Chirpy was already 8 months old and very much attached with us. If you are planning to set her free, please connect with your local bird rescue & rehab centre, before she gets more attached to humans and their living style. It’s difficult but has to be done. And yes it is hard to determine whether the birdie is a he or a she😅

Yes that is a mating dance and yes only male bulbuls do that. They also do that when they are happy😁
Also, you should NOT release him into the wild. Absolutely NOT! He is a hand reared bird now and will NOT survive in the wild.
Your home is also his home and YOU are his flock. Releasing him is exactly the same as capturing a wild animal and forcing it to live in a cage. It's actually worse because a captured wild animal most likely survives in a cage but a released hand reared bird will die in the wild.
Whether you want it or not, you're stuck with him for the rest of his life.... which is 10-15 years. I'm sure you'll both enjoy it☺️

Hi! Don’t worry your Birdie will recover soon. I stopped switching on the fan in our house after chirpy started flying. If it is serious you can take her to the vet. And thank you for watching my video 🙏

Do they eat snails and earthworms??? Can you give me a list of what all you feed him..

    • @pRiyAnkaDagalSanGma
      @pRiyAnkaDagalSanGma  Год назад

I gave her live worms which I bought from Amazon.in Snails and earthworms will be too big for them. Apart from live worms, I fed her fresh fruits, boiled veggies, mashed rice and egg yolk. All these without any salt & sugar.

@@pef619 good to know. Here the snails and earthworms are really huge😅 as long as your bulbul is eating everyday and is playful and active I guess there’s nothing to worry about😃

Hi ma'am, We had rescued a red vented bulbul chick 3 weeks ago and it is doing good. Always trying to be with us. At what age, yours exactly started flying?

    • @pRiyAnkaDagalSanGma

Hello ma’am! So good to hear about the rescue! They are very adorable. My chirpy started flying at about 2-2.5 months old. She started with taking small flights initially and after her feathers were all fully grown about 4 months old, she took long flights.

Hello ! Thank you ! I rescued my bulbul because she was lost. If you know that those bulbul chicks are being taken care of by their parents then please leave them alone. You are fortunate enough they are in your garden😊 you can watch them from distance and maintain a healthy environment for them to nourish & grow. I hope I answered your queries. 🙏
