- The Idahoan discusses the challenges involved in designing a bullpup version of the AR-15 modern sporting rifle, and why most attempts at doing so have failed. Then he shows off a BR-15, arguably the simplest solution to the problem, and tries it out on the range.
I saw the thumb nail and thought, well this is going to be an interesting invention of his. When I saw it in practice though, I kind of like it. The buffer tube kind of locks the thing into your shoulder. If I saw a slightly refined kit for $100 of this, I would most likely pick it up just to play around with a bit. As it is, if I manage to find any time, I might make a slightly different version of it.
The Reap SCY bullpup kit is coming to market now. Works with the PSA Jackyl.
@@JinKee I did see that. Look strikingly similar to this. I wounder if this one was the inspiration, though that development time would be rather short if it was.
I am am surprised that there isn’t much wobble with the brace mounted to the pistol grip! Great work!
As someone who loves bullpups, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I've never felt so conflicted about a bullpup. Either way, well done. It shouldn't be too hard to add in a lever system to actuate the mag release. The bolt release and safety on the other hand would be more complex. And I do agree, the premium one must pay for a dedicated bullpup is ridiculous.
The only easy way to actually convert it would be to take the old gas key out of the bolt carrier.
Cut half the carrier off. And bolt-on an AK-47 Piston + Gas block.
Unless you're able to buy a Bufferless Bolt carrier. But those are a little expensive.
You were too busy asking yourself "could you do it" and never stopped to ask yourself "if you should do it".
Very nice, its does look strange but I can see its virtues. Plus your hat made a hell of a good brass deflector ;-) Btw, you have an epically fun looking range!!!
That's actually pretty damn cool, dude. I wasn't expecting to like it but you got me. Nice work.
i could see this, with some dimensional tweaks and cosmetic upgrades, being a niche but fun 3D printing project. very out of the box design, which shows the importance of being able to take a step back and see the whole of the problem. this is real engineering
Reap industries: damn that’s a good idea! Let’s give the BR-15 a shot and ‘Reap’ the potential benefits
I love what you've done great. Great Job
Once again incredible analysis and innovation from the Idahoan!
Bravo to your engineering!
Great concept and love the innovation.
Always great to see your videos. Things are a little chaotic, but I feel at ease watching The Idahoian Show. Thanks
Well done Tim, this one looks like a great bit of fun. Always appreciate seeing what you get up to in the workshop.
I'm actually digging what you did there.
You are the first guy ive been put the buffer tube over the shoulder making it actually shorter. Ive seen other people make ar15 bullpup. but still had the orginal stock, which defeats the purpose of the bullpup. Awesome trench range setup btw im jealous
New to the channel. I normally just comment "comment" when I like the content but I don't have anything to comment on, but I want to boost the algorithm.
Anyway, I just saw this reviewed by TGC. So I had to see the actual video of the next thing going on my printer. Can't wait to check out more of your vids and seeing what else you come up with. 👍👍
I have a BRN-180, am working on two 3D printable bullpup conversions for that myself, one fully printed lower, and one that bolts on like yours. All I'd need to do to make the bolt on one functional with a standard upper is remove the buffer plug that secures the top of the stock to the lower and put a buffer tube in there instead. Both theoretically functional as is, I just need ammo prices to go down so I can go shoot them without selling a kidney lol
I'm glad I wasn't the only one wanting to 3d print a bullpup AR conversion.
This is the best content you have produced in a while, IMHO. I like what you did here.
It is interesting to imagine how the AR15 can be redesigned. To reconfigure it as an ergonomically efficient bullpup, I believe it would need significant redesigns (such as with the charging handle location, or with the lower as you pointed out that other companies have tried). I personally have spent time drawing out ideas for a bullpup version, but admittedly most of my ideas end up requiring certain parts of the AR to be redesigned from the ground up in order to incorporate modern standards of function and form in a bullpup (e.g., DTA MDRx, Radom MSDS, or IWI X95). However, I think certain original components could be preserved (i.e., FCG and barrel), so it would not require a complete redesign.
To add to your point, the bufferless carrier conversion systems available on the market are interesting, but they also limit your caliber options to .223/5.56 & 300B as far as I've seen. So, you lose much of the caliber compatibility seen in a standard carrier in that exchange. The BRN-180 or SIG MCX uppers are a solution, but they are not in line with your fundamental goal here, which is universal compatibility w/o design modification.
You are an inspiration to me. Keep up the good work!
I like the fact that you try out new ideas, Tim. It is only then that they can be properly evaluated. While you made this stock for yourself, if you stretch the exercise to what a wider market might like, consider this:
13:44 It looks like an actual trigger guard might be useful. Else, you are relying fully on the safety. Yes, the Tavor does not have a trigger guard. That is also "cutesy" in my opinion, and asking for trouble.
You might like the forward handgrip where it is. If it was me, I would explore moving that forwards so that I could use the forward grip as a true pistol grip, without crowding the trigger with my left thumb. Using the full hand to grip the rifle becomes more important during mag changes, as the above video timestamp demonstrates.
With the rear pistol grip having a more regular shape, that terminates at in hand web and trigger guard sections, the right side grip will be more repeatable and more secure too.
As your neighbor from Montana, well done!
I have no bullpups, but I like the concept of having one as an easily maneuverable rifle.
However, I've never heard ANYONE comment about ANY bullpup, "Wow, this sure does have a great trigger!"
It's my understanding that they ALL use a transfer bar, in order to have a forward-mounted trigger activate the rear-mounted firing mechanism, and that's why the trigger always is a weakness.
well, the bull pup conversion concept is very interesting, thums up for me
I LOVE THAT !! I really would like to have one if you decide to make a small run of them !!! I would want to be able to extend the butt stock a little if I need to , BUT Ill take it the way it is !! MAYBE taKE A VOTE AND SEE HOW MANY OF US WANT ONE !!
I second that.
@@Oldmanwithagoldpan GREAT !! Maybe we can prepay so he can afford to make up a onetime run ??!!
@@TOMAS-lh4er I'd actually be down with that.
I'd get one, and I don't even have an AR.
@@patpatterson12 THATS FUNNY^
Pretty creative.
I did something like this before. Except I moved the buffer tube forward. And bought a side-charging bolt carrier. A concept similar to the Mini-14 recoil spring.
I've spent my whole life trying to design a Bufferless AR.
They make foam covers for pistol buffers which might be worthwhile. A dedicated bullpup lower in this style would be cool.
This is a really neat idea. The best part is it looks like you could swap back to your regular rifle configuration in a minute.
Yeah, cool as heckerino. Really great concept and execution. Once again I'm quite impressed. Even you're presentation was top tier. You seem to be quite adept and comfortable with public speaking. I'm guessing a pastor or a deacon or something along those lines. Anyway, fantastic work, god bless fren.
I think Reap might've been inspired by this to make their SCY bullpup kit
The ARES-Olin AIWS was kind of like a bullpup M16. It was one of the dropouts from the Advanced Combat Rifle program.
Reminds me of the 3011 not in function or form but in using existing parts to perform the task and 3d printing/ engineering to bridge the gap
Awesome, thanks for making this video
I like it, it's awesome! Can you use air and plunger with a one way valve in it as a buffer?
Would love to see the "pistol" version. Also maybe have another point of attachment like the under rail or bayonet lug?
That would be illegal kid!!! Front grip
@@sleigh4019 There are bulpup handguns. It's about being designed to shoot it one handed. Also as far as I know you can have a "hand stop" on the "forend" of the "pistol" unless the ATF recently changed that. It's also irrelevant if I'm talking about a rifle.
You could make an attachment point on the front to snap onto the bayonet lug for added stability.
you could add a second safety on your printed stock/grip, that blocks your trigger/transition-bar and prevent it from moveing. so you could let the actual safety on the lower always on fire, and still be able to put the weapon on "safe" while manipulating, moveing etc.
all in all a neat concept
I like your way of thinking. :-)
Great invention!!!
This looks ridiculous, but here's an idea; apply this conversion kit to that goofy "Can Cannon" to simulate some kind of recoilless rifle that recoils.
The new XM5 rifle has NO buffer tube, I would love to see a bullpup kit for it.
Thanks for this. Thanks for the STL files.
You're welcome!
“So how’d you blow out your right ear drum, dude?”
-“Here, lemme send ya a link to a vid.”
I love the printing community for these stuff. The ideas are crazy when freedom are given and not monopolize nor anti-gunner government entities taking away from us.
a pistol length buffer tube with a a stock fludh with the end of the tube would shave down like 6 inches atleast
then put the bullpup trigger group right in front of the mag well
you could even print a lower with a built in hole for a transfer bar
Interesting!!
I was wondering why I haven't seen any videos from you. Glad you are still inventing stuff. I keep wanting to try a featurless rifle "fudd" style with ar lower. Im in a nanny state.
Very creative
An electronic trigger linkage would be less mushy, mechanical backup and all. Might be fun to play with.
Yup, that's on my list of things to try someday.
Mechanically speaking, that would be a great option. Legally, maybe not as much, I believe it would be too close to “easily converted into a machine gun” for the freedom haters.
this is a cursed gun, but $25 is $25.
Honestly my main concern was mainly for sights and m-lok attachments. But I remember you can buy uppers that have m-lock hand guards and picatinny rail all throughout the upper so you can add sights.
I feel like if you find the right company they might work with you into making a fully working bull-pup conversation
if you want to slightly refine and mass produce these I can almost guarantee you that you'd have a lot of customers
Diane! Diane! It's got the shoulder thing that comes up! Diane!
since the hi point made it on the market i get the impression everything is viable as long as it's functional and cheap enough
Brilliant !!
Just give the bolt release a bump/smack with the ball of your palm. It's how Drill Sargent Wright taught me in 90 at Ft Sill.
Thats really neat reminds me of matts crude design from demolition ranch. That would really be sweet with a kelt tech plr 16.
Your thoughts on Reap Weaponries SCY Bullpup conversion? Very similar to your prototype.
Well, I've never tried one out, but it definitely looks slicker than my BR-15, and appears to do the same thing. So, assuming it works well, I think it would be a hot seller if it was priced at $50, and might even do well at $150, but given that they're asking $500 for just the conversion piece, I'm thinking it's probably DOA as a commercial product.
Demolitionranch made a very similar design "much more crude" years ago
But his video was taken down
Would post a TFB article link but my comment would be removed
The only advantage of a bullpup is having a long barrel in a short package. If someone is able to figure that out with ar15 parts that would be amazing
Get the magpul carbine SL handguard and it'll improve the look ever so slightly. Good work nonetheless
Very cool concept. It would be neat to put a light trigger in the lower and give it a paintball double trigger
Why are still transfer bars the go to to push on the trigger instead of protected bowden cable like pull or partial motion?
The meh trigger is the main complaint besides a need to learn the controls. A better trigger transfer system would be an interesting video series. I'm a big fan of your bullpup builds and bullpups in general.
rigidity and friction
Add a Set Trigger system.
A 300 year old concept.
Something to stage the trigger to make the firing trigger feel less shit.
HEY !!! I WOULD PUT MY " Sylvan Arms Folding stock adaptor on that !! AND a "FRT" trigger !!
I always wondered if using a cable instead of a transfer bar would improve the trigger feel on a bullpup
IIRC there's a Bullpup that uses cable to pull the sear in the trigger assembly, but i forgot its name .... It's a Russian one, Groza probably
This is so cursed
Super.....i think its easy to use now
genius idea. A manufacturer needs to contact you for further development.... Fostech?
Definitely viable, just needs some touching up!
This is a sad video but I like the idea
Love it, where are the STLs again?
On my website, down in the "documentation" section. www.idahoanshow.com
Maaan you and your ideas 😁
Add a shoulder loop of stiff strap material .
I think instead of a transfer bar an electronic trigger is called for .
First thing I thought, you basically slapped it on a hacked Wii Zapper/Crossbow Trainer peripheral
Interesting conversion. That should be marketable. You should at least protect the design against commercial use. So many advantages to the bull pup!
Opinions on MBLR 15? It was announced teo months before this video was posted.
Basically I'd say it fits the pattern of AR-15 bullpups that I described. It does have a few more interchangeable parts than most, including the ones that are needed for caliber changes, such as the barrel, bolt face, and magazine. That might give it some niche appeal that other attempts haven't had. However, note that most of the major components (receivers, bolt carrier, etc) are still proprietary. And given that it appears to have been developed by a freelance inventor without the resources to put it into mass production, I would anticipate that, if it goes into production at all, production will be in small batches and prices will be relatively high-I'd be surprised if it ever retails for less than dedicated bullpups like the Desert Tech MDR , IMI Tavor, and Springfield Hellion.
Not gonna lie. I want this
I will import this if you make a refined commercial version
it looks pretty
put a light holder above the for hand grip
Evolution weapons systems BCG lets you convert a standard upper and lower to a bullpup.
That is Ugg__Lee!!
Just watching his vids, i can smell the country on this dude!🤷🏻♂️🤣👍
Please try this with an ar-57 upper. Refine it a bit and I'm sold.
Nice. The trigger is going to be the sticky part.
Genius!!!
Any news or updates on this project?
And try adding a hydraulic buffer would make it less snappy
This is so cool! Have you made the .stl file available for this great design?
Yes, the .stl is posted in the 'documentation' section on my website: www.idahoanshow.com
@@TheIdahoanShow thank you for the reply! Typo, I meant .step
Only .stl, sorry.
HOW About a notch in the frame to reach the mag release easier, and a hole in the side of frame to reach a "BAD LEVER" from the right side
Jesus, this is why normal gun people look down their noses at bullpup owners. Miss me with that ARbomination.
Try a cable and pulley system for Your trigger connection.
That could make the trigger pull lighter due to mechanical advantage, but that would make for a pretty damn long trigger pull. Best option I can think of to keep the price low would be to put in a rise armament drop in trigger, they have a pretty decent one. About 3.5lbs for the price of about 120 if I recall correctly
wheres your website????
Hurts my eyes
i think if you want something awesome cheap but different then you found it
Should use a Monolith upper
say i use the mp15-22 so theres no buffer tube will your design work for this?
i dotn have a printer do you know where i can get one ready to install
what about the sw mp15-22 pistol, ??
I have only tested it on this one AR15, but I imagine it would work just fine on a rifle without a buffer tube.
I don't have any ready-made ones for sale at this point (maybe in future, if I can find a distributor who wants to print and sell them) but I know there are companies that do general 3D printing. Just type "3D printing service" into your favorite search engine, and it should come up with some companies that can print parts from the STL files.
Just make it pump action you can't shoot that much faster anyways also it doesn't cycle cheap ammo well if you try for semi
