To me, it's still one of the most impressive and realistic animal movies besides them being anthropomorphic. Even if it's animated, it's very realistic looking.
More impressively, its only one of two animated films from the 2010s that won the Academy for Animated Feature that didn't come from Disney or Pixar. The other being Into The Spiderverse.
Rango is such a good movie, and Jake is one of the greatest animated antagonists. Physically intimidates the moment he is on screen, towering over everyone with his badass visage, and then proceedes to mentally intimidate Rango into submission.
Rango is an amazing movie! It boasts quite a number of darker and mature undertones that you wouldn’t normally expect from a PG animated Nickelodeon movie. The mature themes are handled very well without having to go too far and instead takes risks while also balancing the dark themes out. The characters are all likable and entertaining, the CG animation is stellar, Hans Zimmer’s score is once again exciting, and Rattlesnake Jake, although not the main villain, is a very intimidating secondary villain and even more intense than the main one.
“You ain’t got the nerve” “Try *me* ” That exchange sent chills down my spine All I so fun fact: The character at 23:47 is supposed to be The Man With No Name, one of the most iconic and famous Western movie characters of all time. However here he is called The Sprit of The West, which is fitting. He was played by Clint Eastwood, and you can see the studio used his likeness. He appeared in A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. But here he is voiced by Timothy Olyphant.
Not only can you see the shock in Jake's eyes when he realizes that Rango was serious, you can see that he STAYS shocked for the rest of the scene, up until the transition into the bank.
Just like in The Pirates of The Caribbean, Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy are always great actors as characters who are on opposite sides, they are simply the perfect opposing duo, whether they are in front of each other or animated like here in Rango.
I loved the hyper-realistic look to this movie. We've seen so many Pixar-type movies with these really cute animals and colorful characters, it was refreshing to get some realism, some grit, yet still be a cartoon. Sadly we haven't got anything more like this since.
It's badass knowing the encounter between Rango and Rattlesnake Jake is just a reunion between Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones. Also, the sound design on Rattlesnake Jake is just so satisfying.
Rattlesnake Jake is one of the best animated movie villains. Both the concept of a rattlesnake with a Gatling gun as a tail and his sadistic yet honorable personality are so fun
This movie is severely underrated. Most animated movies nowadays lack the grim & mature tone that they had back then, this is one of those movies that isn't afraid to go all out with the weirdness but has a distinctive look
Animation still holds up even by today’s standards. This really is one of the greatest animated movies I’ve seen and one of the finest wild westerns I’ve ever seen
Rattlesnake Jake is such a good villain. He has respect and kinda like the wolf in Puss in boots the last wish. He doesn’t get defeated or killed, he leaves in respect for the protagonist and i love that so much.
It's like no other movie I have ever seen. A bolt from the blue. Also, watching your expressions jump from completely perplexed to laughing uncontrollably was awesome, and a perfect summation of that it was like to watch this movie the first time.
Just a classic, an absolute classic film, one of my favorite to watch reactions to but THERE ARE SO FEW. Thanks for watching this one, and I'm glad you liked it. Haven't watched the reaction but I know you liked it, how can you not?
You know what makes Rattlesnake Jake even more intimidating is his eyes...they're like Sauron's glad you noticed it, plus I personally think he has the best lines. Together with the soundeffects and the emotion in the voice acting. Shivers.
As an animator, this movie is INCREDIBLE. It's an animated film, but seems to completely buck EVERY rule for animated films. NONE of the characters are aesthetically pleasing to look at, the environments are all ugly and atmosphere is very oppressing. This movie was made as a true attempt at making a GOOD western film in the same lane as the classic westerns. But at the same it's also NOT a true western by bringing in some legit arthouse style cinematography. There is legit nothing else like this film out there, and the fact that it's a NICKELODEON ANIMATED MOVIE is insane.
“None of the characters are aesthetically pleasing to look at, the environments are all ugly and the atmosphere is very oppressive.” I’m pretty sure that’s the idea. It makes feel real and lived in. Sometimes too good can actually be VERY bad
Not sure if I read this somewhere or if I made it up or if it was intended, but Rango walking across the highway can easily be seen as him attempting self-deletion. Really powerful moment, and further highlights how this is a movie is made for everyone, not just kids. His despair brought him so low, that he was willing to end it all, and pair that with the graveyard scenes with him walking out and then making his return. Such a legendary moment. Also, there IS an end credit scene and the end credits musical number is epic. If you didn't see it, make sure to check it out in your own time.
Timothy Olyphant in this as "The spirit of the West" is my top three roles he's done. Especially his sage wisdom and character design based on Clint Eastwood himself.
Rango is very much the kind of movie that prioritizes style but it does it without sacrificing any of it's substance, very much an underrated movie i think, though in recent years it definitely started gaining some traction
I saw this as a kid and was confused by a lot but still loved it for reasons I couldn’t explain. Well, except for because it was western-themed and I loved watching westerns with my dad.
I've seen this movie countless times and am blown away every time. I've never understood why it hasn't received more recognition. I'm glad you watched and enjoyed this one 👍😁
because of the marketing back then. nickelodeon didn't now how to market the movie and parents didn't realy know if this movie was actualy for kids or not, because of the realistic artstyle. so not many people actualy watched it on release
I'm not going to read through the comments to see if anyone mentioned... The highway scene a the beginning of this movie features a red convertible car. This is a direct reference to the movie, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" -1998, which stars non other than Johnny Depp. The voice actor for Rango.
Gotta love everyone's voice acting really shining through their performance but I especially love Bill Nighy as Rattlesnake Jake xD one of the best and most ruthless villains in animated movie history in my opinion, and he had the perfect voice to go with it!
Man, I am so glad you guys watched this it really is one of the best animated films out there. When this first came out I was so blown away by the quality of the animation. It was ahead of its time. Then there's the character designs, especially Rattlesnake Jake and that awesome tail gun.
A couple months ago, I finally watched Rango, after only seeing the beginning in the theater as a kid (we walked out). While it isn't a perfect movie, there is some unique artistry in the movie. One small thing I enjoyed about the movie is how there was a slow transition from the real world to the anthropomorphic world. That along with many things in the movie is so interesting. Also, about the armadillo, sometimes I like to think of him being the animal version of the Spirit of the West, a companion perhaps, and was a crucial aid to Rango. Great reaction, guys.
Rango is one of the best and most underrated animated movies of all time - and a shocking good Western too! Very well written and directed, still looks great, and not really a kids' movie either.
A few other character design touches about Rattlesnake Jake I missed on my first watch: His hat is tied with a string so it dosent fall off, and his scales have a pattern just above his upper lip that looks like a moustache. Fuckin stellar character design.
I also heard from somewhere that the animation also looks as good as it does due to it being delayed. During that time, the animators worked on it more and improved it to what it is now.
If you read between the Armadillo's lines, you realize that he is Death. And the fact that he's perfectly fine after being cut in half by a car tire. He carries a staff which is an allusion to a scythe. "It is my quest to get to the other side." 'You've done this before?' "Oh yes, many times." "it's a metaphor." "that's right, amigo. The Other Side of the road. Beautiful (as heaven should be), isn't it?" he's the one who ultimately sends Rango to where he will one day die. He's the one who greets Rango when he finally does cross the road. there are so many layers to this film's symbolism you can watch it 1000 times and always find something new.
I always need some water or a drink with me when I watch this film. They do such a good job with the animation that it makes you feel parched, just looking at the dry desert.
The asymmetry of pretty much all the characters was a wildly difficult thing for the character modellers to pin down because they needed to look good from all angles. The entire team was insanely dedicated and I'm so glad they did what they did. I really wish more animated films had this kind of visual style.
"Listen close you pathetic fraud, this is MY town now. If I ever see you again I will take your soul straight down to HELL!" - One of the coldest lines from any ""kid's"" movie I've watched, period. Rattlesnake Jake is my #1 favorite 3D animated antagonist, but I just wish he was in the movie more XD
I remember watching this with a friend and when beans said "anyone here remember what happened to our last sheriff?" my friend missed the point and said "he turned into a spider.. no waayy" I laughed so hard!😂
I saw this on Netflix after it came out and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it, it seemed like more of a grown up animated movie and had a lot of mature jokes, I miss movies like this. That's probably why it isn't more well known, because it was basically an animated movie not intended for kids and so they had a hard time marketing it.
I love the movie Rango, Rango played by Johnny Depp and Jake the rattlesnake is played by the same actor who played David Jones in pirates of the Caribbean dead man’s chest and worlds end!!!!
OMG OMG OMG¡!¡! I LOVE WHEN I FIND A REACTION TO THIS MOVIE. My sister and I quote this movie on the regular..... C'mon! We're practically related! I'll let you kiss my sister! 😂😂😂
Best animated movie. Best Johnny Depp movie. And very quotable. So many subtly creative nuances, I keep finding new ones with each watch. "I think you just swallowed Plan B." ;)
great movie... dont know if you noticed it but the guy in the car with hat and Hawaiian shirt on is Johnny's character from Fear and Loathing even looked like him
It feels so weird seeing comments talking about how they saw this movie in the theaters as a kids. I was working in the theaters putting myself through college when this came out.
Rattlesnake Jake is top 3 of terrifying cartoon/animated presence for me. 2003 animated General Grievous and Lobo from the new puss in boots sit there as well. Presence, fluidity, design, and just being fucking cool 😂. Love Bill as Davey Jones too, both characters send chills down your spine.
Fun fact: This won the Academy Award for Animated Feature! No surprise there at all! Love the animation in this! 🎉🎉🎉
To me, it's still one of the most impressive and realistic animal movies besides them being anthropomorphic. Even if it's animated, it's very realistic looking.
Yes it’s so beautiful too 🌵
@@Da_TboneLifebeautiful animation

This movie came out in 2011, and the animation is still amazing
It's definitely in my top 10 favorite films of all time
Them having the actual actors perform live as a reference point certainly helped
way ahead of it’s time
Well duh. Its only been 12 years.
This film is definitely amazing
Rango is such a good movie, and Jake is one of the greatest animated antagonists. Physically intimidates the moment he is on screen, towering over everyone with his badass visage, and then proceedes to mentally intimidate Rango into submission.

I remember watching Rango in theaters with my dad. Really good animated movie.
I saw it in theaters with my class!
Me too!
nice pfp !
A took me daughter to see it couldn't believe how good it was .wev seen it dozens of times since ,its ryt up there like
The behind the scenes (acted out fully by everyone) is awesome 😂
When Rango was talking to the mayor while playing golf, the three henchmen had the same clothes as the Three Stooges
The first and only animated movie by Oscar Winning VFX company Industrial Light And Magic.
That's the Star Wars guys for you folks at home
And now they’re doing a Transformers animated movie.
Rattlesnake Jake is one of the best animated movie villains. Both the concept of a rattlesnake with a Gatling gun as a tail and his sadistic yet honorable personality are so fun
Rango is such an underrated gem, I’m glad more people are reacting to it and I’m happy you guys enjoyed it.

I don't think Rango was so much TRYING to die, he just didn't care if he did.
@@stanmann356 Maybe he is a nihilist.
This movie was ahead of its time imo. I didnt truly appreciate it until years later, but its a masterpiece
Timothy Olyphant in this as "The spirit of the West" is my top three roles he's done.

Johnny depp is a gem and disney is definitely going to feel the loss of this great actor.
I love Rango. I believe it is one of the most underrated movies ever
"If I ever see you again, I will take your soul STRAIGHT DOWN TO HELL!"
Without a doubt, one of the most badass lines ever.

This movie is so much fun, with great actors and character designs.
I love that it’s inspired by “Chinatown”

My husband and I just rewatched this a few nights ago and it still holds up! Its funny, well cast, beautifully animated and an entertaining story
The reason it looks so realistic, is because the actors actually performed the movie on a soundstage...
I also heard from somewhere that the animation also looks as good as it does due to it being delayed. During that time, the animators worked on it more and improved it to what it is now.

“Never trust a turtle.”

Have always really liked this one, way underrated and flew under the radar for most people. Glad that you guys watched this one, great reaction!
I remember watching this with a friend and when beans said "anyone here remember what happened to our last sheriff?" my friend missed the point and said "he turned into a spider.. no waayy" I laughed so hard!😂
Easily one of the most impressive films that Nickelodeon Studios produced.
It also borrows heavily, and I mean, HEAVILY from Chinatown.
"Baby's first Tarantino film" is the best description of Rango 😂
Rango is a bizarre underrated masterpiece and one of my favorite movies
I heard that someone of the production team said Jake was the one who killed the Jenkins brothers. So he really was pissed 😅
THIS MOVIE IS SO MUCH FUN!
Did you notice that you are watching a movie of crazy looking animals with a frog on the shelf directly over your head?
OH WHAT A SURPRISEEE
More people seriously need to watch this movie, it's incredibly underrated!!
To this day I quote "Thespians? Tha- that's illegal, in 7 states!"

Yo Chris Curtis I highly recommend you watch Airheads it's pure comedy gold which stars Brendan Fraser Adam Sandler Steve Buscemi and Chris Farley
There are some behind the scenes videos worth looking at 😊
Now you know why we suggested “Rango”! GREAT film!
People don't realize it, but the score for this movie was composed by Hans Zimmer
What an Underrated masterpiece!
Rango is the best movie and rattlesnake jake is soo cool is gun is his tail❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO
MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME

This is such an underated movie and it looks amazing
When the turtle Mayor says "The Future, Mr. Rango" it is an Easter Egg reference to the movie Chinatown.

OMG, I don't know why it took me so long to get the plan B reference when they were in the tank LMAO
Now this is what I call a reaction
Best animated movie. Best Johnny Depp movie. And very quotable. So many subtly creative nuances, I keep finding new ones with each watch.
"I think you just swallowed Plan B." ;)
great movie... dont know if you noticed it but the guy in the car with hat and Hawaiian shirt on is Johnny's character from Fear and Loathing even looked like him
This is my favourite animated film. It’s so beautiful & gritty 🌵
Fun Fact: this was my very first western❤
It feels so weird seeing comments talking about how they saw this movie in the theaters as a kids. I was working in the theaters putting myself through college when this came out.
Best watch fear and loathing now to get that reference at the start

I loved this movie growing up 🥰 nice to see you guys react!

21:04 funny thing, that’s what my dad said about the Mayor when I first watched it with him 😂
