Really great opening music selection Devon! Matched nicely with your closing scenery, even as the thunder roars out this way this evening. Your videos are very enjoyable to follow. Just something about the neatness of your combined operations is almost peaceful to enjoy. Happy Gardening! -Bob...
Thank you, Bob! I’m glad to hear this because it usually takes me awhile to find the perfect music. I love watching a good thunderstorm. Hope you have a nice evening.
great update on the home food / growing business. The amount of work and great team work , your family of 3 ( plus your honey) accomplish . Kind a of mind blowing . Your family's joy of working to create nutrition for your customers , comes through like spiritual gold. Keep sharing and caring . Any young couples could learn plenty and work toward their own dreams , just by following your good works. Be great to see how the cooling system works , with the greenhouse paint to keep the plants happy :) See you in the next update .
I really love your channel since the beginning and have been following until now. I am also a hydroponic grower. Cleaning troughs is a real pain. I would suggest using a high pressure washer machine for cleaning those hydroponic troughs. It’s quick and time saving. I hope that helps. 😊
Tried adding a link to the seed dispenser I use for my microgreens but looks like youtube didn’t allow a link but please look for: Winco dredge with snap on lids. please take a look. Think your mom would like this for her microgreens or this one: New Star Foodservice 22513 Plastic Dredge with 3 Snap-on Lid, Seasoning Sugar Spice Pepper Shaker, 10 OZ The different sized hole lids are great for different sized seeds. Really enjoy your channel
Sunflower microgreens are the best. They are so crunchy and juicy. Not only are they packed with vitamins and minerals but they also contain all of the essential amino acids that the body needs.
This operation looks very professional operation, very clean nursery. I like how you are experimenting with the propagation. I’m watching this as part of our research towards a fully organic micro farm without chemicals and not sure if it’s possible without chemicals
I hate to tell you but you are pruning the runners too soon. We usually prune and discard them while the plants are fruiting. then during the summer let the runners start to grow. They still need their energy from the parent plant to form their roots so we just turn them back into the same planter. Once the runner has established good roots, then you can cut it off and move the plant elsewhere. usually we remove the runners and plants right before winter and put them in cold storage for the winter and replant in the spring.
Good info. I would like to try this on a smaller scale to see the process work. Can you provide more info on the steps to store the plants in cold storage? Thanks
@@jimjam36695 Once the plants start to die back in the fall, remove the leaves, pull the plants out of the media, throw them in a trash bag, and put them into storage in the basement. We have a cold area that doesn't get a hard freeze which works well.
Your Strawberry runners ideally should be left attached to the main plant till they actually take root, then snip them. You could root them individually into small pots that you just rest in the main trays till they take root, then snip them and remove the pots. Strawberries do best on a 3 year cycle, next years main plants are last years potted up runners, this years runners you grow on for a year but don't let them fruit, they become the following years main plants and so on.
Basil seeds are so cool. They make a white gooey case around themselves like chia seeds! My soon to be daughter in law is just learning to cook now that her and my son finally got into their first apartment! She has never really cooked with fresh herbs before and so far she loves the smell and has been asking if I thought their balcony could grow some herbs. So I got a bucket ready and put 3 lettuces in and a basil kratky style to start. I think it will be ready to go in about a week. I also found a window box I think I will transplant some oregano/ chives and parsley into. I have thyme but it doesn't transplant well for me so I might just dig out my seeds and get some going. We finally got rain and the gardens are happy. Hope your asparagus is doing well.🥰
I didn't even think about using the cubes for any runners from my strawberries. I might use them instead of little pots of promix. But the type of strawberries I'm growing don't throw out a ton of runners. The Quinault does a bit but the Sweethearts don't seem to. I did find some wild strawberries and brought 3 home last year and they've bloomed but I swear their only job in life is to make runners lol. I might be moving them away from my garden 😆
Glad you got some rain! I really hope we can have a normal summer this year. Weather seems weird lately. I know what you mean about the Basil. I just discovered that with the Thai Basil seeds. I couldn’t figure out what the little gel balls were in my trays. Congrats to your son and daughter-in-law on their apartment! That’s a great idea for their balcony. I love how anyone can grow stuff no matter where they live. I never have good luck with thyme or oregano, but mom does. She can grow Rosemary like crazy in the channels too.
I started an indoor garden. Do you have to flush your hodroponic system before harvesting your strawberries, tomatoes and other vegetables. Thanks for your good video I realy like them. Ray
Need to get some hives going. JC'S bees channel would be perfect for you, Jason Chrisman is located in Ohio. Nothing like having your own honey. Two hives is plenty just for you family.

Zone 9 I think) ... by the way, I have the GreenStalk Tower set up, I'm just waiting for my PH test meters to get here next week... I'll have to email you some pics I don't have the skills to make a video yet... But I think it is going to work..
Love your videos and learning a lot. Do you trim your strawberry plants? I’m growing some hydroponically and mine have a lot more leaves. I saw somewhere that maybe I should cut older leaves to promote berry growth. Do you do that or find it to be true? Thanks James
Thanks, James! We only trim the runners and the dead leaves. We leave all the green leaves on the strawberries since that is their source of energy. That's what we do, but I know there are many ways to do things.
Johhny seeds have great seeds but for micro greens there seeds are way to expensive. I would switch to Mountain Valley seed company. Literally Mountain Valley seed cost are half the price and are the same quality. I use Johnnys for all my lettuce seed but for micros I use Mountain Valley seed. I’m also a commercial hydroponic lettuce grower. I love all your videos!! You guys are crushing it!!!
@@HomegrownPassion ... Cool. I got the impression that they were started from Bonney plants in soil rather than seed? Doesn't matter either way ... I hope they take off!
Microgreens . . . forgive me I'm just an old country boy. What are they mainly used for? I heard your mother say the spicy microgreens were good on pasta, and I guess in salads. do you suggest any recipes, are they just a garnish? Id doesn't seem like it would be a big seller. Strawberries -- I've had good luck placing the runner inside the container a few days until roots form THEN cutting them loose and planting on their own.
Oh no that’s worrying. We haven’t noticed too much of an increase from Johnny’s Seed, but lots of varieties are sold out. I hope this is not permanent.
We are still trying to gauge how many plants we can handle and exactly what we want to grow. We also want to see how much room everything needs now that we’ve expanded a bit. The grow bags make it really easy for us to move things around and figure out spacing. The Dutch buckets are more fixed to one location. I do think they are better in the long run, and we may switch to doing some in the future.
@@HomegrownPassion I can't wait to see your video on the Dosatron up and running in the high tunnel. Will the water need to be kept in a certain temp range?
As long as we keep the vine crops pruned and have good airflow, we don’t have a problem with them. We also have to keep the plants trellised well or they will settle on the bottom of the leaves. A couple years ago they infested the tomatoes at the end of their growing cycle so we pulled them early.

Another great day at Homegrown Passion with microgreens, strawberries and cows enjoying the sunset. Thank you for the sharing of your day.
Thank you for sharing these videos! They are so addictive! I found a local hydroponic greenhouse in my town and the produce is truly amazing!
