    I love how battojutsu focuses more on attacking the hands first since it’s the closest target and the fastest way of countering someone already in the attack [already sword drawn out]. It reminds me of a similar principle in Kali called [defanging the snake] where the closest target is also attacked first [ the hands holding a close combat weapon]. Really interesting how sword art changed post war as swords aren’t usually drawn out

    i saw a video somewhere a swordmaster says it should be like this. Samurai don't straightaway draw out their sword when fighting like in the movies. They prefer keeping their sword in their case so that their enemy won't be able to judge how long or short it is. The advantage is theirs. They only draw when the opportunity comes. I want to see how strong the strike is when hit. Try going through the strike on bamboos.

    I want to ask.....so...this technique rather then saying sword drawing, it is actually the scabber pulling.
    How frequent do you have to get a new scabber because the locking system is worn out due to the fast pulling?
    I have katana and I tried both scabber pulling (like the way in the video) and the actual sword pulling...... either way will cause the "ko i ku thi" gets losen eventually and the sword cannot secured locked inside the scabber.

      To answer your question, the Koikuti in the sheath will come loose, which is the same thing as a car tire. If you use it, it will wear out.
      Some swords are used for ornamental purposes and others are used for practicing techniques.
      As for Koikuti, we will repair it with wood. I practice every day, and I think I repair a loose sword about three times a year.
      Cypress is probably the way to go. After gluing it together, we can adjust it with a fine stick file. If you are concerned about the discoloration of the habaki, you should consider the type of glue.

    • @everest0411
      @everest0411 4 года назад +2

      @@KanayamaTakayuki Appreciate for the response. I was worried about the loose problem so I have not practiced as hard as I should be.....because finding matching scabber (mostly the inner chamber to fit with the size and length and shape of the sword) sometimes.........is a problem in my place........ I have not thought about using glue and wood piece to fix it. Thank you, I will try your professional method and keep on the training.

    • @KanayamaTakayuki
      @KanayamaTakayuki  4 года назад +8

      It is expensive to buy a scabbard, and it is difficult to repair the whole thing. In Japan, we use 2 mm x 4 mm Japanese cypress and cut it into about 2.5 cm of habaki length and glue it to the direction of the blade. We wait for a day, and then we scrape it with a thin, stick-like file. After a day's wait, we file the blade with a thin stick file.
      Finally, make sure the gap between Koikuti and Tuba is about 5 mm between the Koikuti and the Tuba, so that the gap will be just right after using it.
      If you leave less than 5 mm gap between the Koikuti and the flange, it will loosen again sooner or later. It would be good if you can get a piece of wood just right. It is sold in the store called "Tokyu Hands" in Japan.

    • @everest0411
      @everest0411 4 года назад +1

      @@KanayamaTakayuki Thanks for the prompt reply. I will keep the information and try to fix one of my practice sword which has a bit loosen scabber condition (when I invert, the sword tends to drop down already.....)
      By the way, when you wrote " wait for a day and use the stick-like filer to file the blade," you mean to actually file the blade part on the sword? Or did you mean to just file the glued on cypress piece to match with the shape of the sword?
      Really appreciate.

    • @KanayamaTakayuki
      @KanayamaTakayuki  4 года назад +4

      We will answer your questions.
      Only the glued-in cypress is to be filed.
      Be careful not to cut the sheath.
      A stick file is used on the thin side of the file, so it is easy to prepare a file with the right shape for it. Look for a thin one that doesn't hit the sheath.
      If you are successful, please contact me again.
      Sorry if this is a mistranslation.

    From other videos, people explain that before putting the sword back to its sheath, they need to perform (chiburi), where they (are supposed to throw the blood away from the sword), is this part not needed because of practise?

    • @KanayamaTakayuki
      @KanayamaTakayuki  4 года назад +8

      Thank you for your comment.
      The chiburi does not completely erase the blood, and it is unthinkable to put it back into the scabbard. Originally, the blade was to be wiped with paper and returned to the scabbard, but this cannot be included in kata practice, which is why the form of chiburi was created.
      The use of this movement varies from organization to organization.

      Battojutsu is a Kata practice and is for learning how to use the body. Of course, it is possible that the body can react to a sudden attack or the response when it is attacked, but it is not used like a cartoon. At present, we are doing this to learn how to react unconsciously to the body.
