I am a handy and mechanically inclined person. I am 100% sure that I could have figured this out on my own, but I can't thank you enough for putting this video together as it made life SOOOOOO much easier. I watch a lot of "how to" video's on various things, and although this is a long one, it's INCREDIBLY complete on how to do the ENTIRE job. VERY VERY well done.
Discovered the dreaded broken top sprocket. Went immediately to RUclips and discovered Nick's tutorial. Watched it once and was convinced I could do it. Ordered the part, a few days later pulled up Nick's video and followed step-by-step. Took me a bit longer than it took Nick as I had several trips back and fourth from garage to my shop for tools. After a couple of hours it works perfectly. Thanks Nick. Very well thought out and thorough video. BTW wish I could have seen the classic Mopar better in the background.
One of the best how-to videos I have ever seen. "Ask me how I know." You were clear and concise and explained everything very thoroughly. The upper sprocket bearing was worn and ground down the shaft to an 1/8th of an inch before braking. You gave me the confidence to tackle this job. I had another older craftsman. I took the rail from it and the very intact sprocket and rebuilt the 2006 Chamberlain. It is working great. I never really was sure what I was doing when adjusting my lift. You made that an easy task, also. Well done!
I made several mistakes in my initial attempts to replace a broken gear in a 20-year-old Chamberlain. "Ask me how I know." Ri-i-i-ght! Your excellent Demonstration and Comments helped me to correct my errors and finish the job. Nick, you are a good teacher.
This is the best video I have seen regarding replacing the gear and sprocket on a liftmaster garage door opener. I have a lift master and I purchased a kit to replace my worn gear and sprocket. I followed this video to a "T" and everything worked out fine. Thanks to this video.
Nick I am a 79 year old retired service technician/service manager. I surf the web viewing videos to see what is happening in the field today. Just finished watching your video on shaft and bearing replacement for a lift master/ craftsman GDO and have to say you made me proud. By the way that's the company I worked for for 25+ years and would have been proud to have you as one of my employees.
I've never worked on a garage door opener . . . until now. I have viewed many videos and this is the most complete and well explained. I won't bother going into what the other videos lack. You obviously have a complete understanding of all facets of the functions of garage door openers and a command of the English language . . . at the least. I'd hate to dismay your boss and I don't mean to demean your current situation but you have mastered this and it is time to move on up and forward to a more rewarding ($$$) profession or run your own show doing this. Don't stop till you reach your limit or retire. You will be much better for it. Ask me how I know.
I looked at many videos to help me fix my sprocket being replaced. And to get my chain readjusted. This video is by far the one that helped me. Thank you very much. Very informative.
Thanks very much for taking the time to post this very well done instructional video. I'm a 65 yr old diy type when possible. Your video gave me the confidence to do the entire job (including changing the motor bearing and worm gear assemblies) without fear of getting stuck in the middle scratching my head. Your discussion regarding what are known causes for particular failure modes was very helpful. The demonstration concerning the limit adjustments and force settings let me finish the job like a professional. Thanks for making the job a straight forward task for the price of the replacement kit as apposed to a potentially costly repair.
I never comment on RUclips videos, but I have to thank you for this one. I just finished this repair to my opener, and I'm really glad I watched your video first! Both the overview of the job and your "pro tips" were really helpful.
I can't thank you enough for your great video. I have a LiftMaster 1280 which is a little different from the model in your video. To remove the worm gear you have to knock out the roll pin which added a little more challenge but not a huge deal. Then I had some issues getting the door travel adjusted after replacing all the parts. All those problems were caused by me not having things adjusted or connected properly. For about $30 in parts it's now working great again. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done this without your great instructions. I'm sure you saved me a lot of money and I am extremely grateful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Great tip on where the sprocket is supposed to cycle to. Other vids don't cover this and it is important if you are replacing the trolley and chain and forgot to mark it. Thanks again.
I just used this video and the replacement kit from 365 Garage Parts (bought via Amazon Prime, but they deserve a plug) and my garage door is now fixed. This video is fantastic and I can't thank you enough for it. Extremely comprehensive and useful!
Hi Nick. Thanks so much for making this video. My gear had stripped in a 1999 Liftmaster 4410EGB-418 door opener and your comprehensive video helped me to replace the gears and all the bearings using the service kit. I'm back up and running again thanks to you so thank you!!
Got the right parts, thanks to you and replaced gears without one problem. Excellent video. Saved money and time. Of all the videos I watched, this one was the only one trusted. Thank you!
Great video! I'm a garage door tech myself, the way you broke this repair down was perfect, you didn't leave any questions unanswered Operators have always been my nightmare job, this video pointed out a few of the issues I've had. Thanks man!!!
it was a great video ,i just replaced my gears but i do have one question still ,how are you supposed to tighten the chain properly? i can't do it , i tried everything, the side with the tightening bolt and nuts is too tight and the opposite side is too loose ,how come there is no way to just make it tight on both sides at the same time? i tried to spin the wheel for the RPM sensor and the sprocket will turn a little and make the opposite side of the chain a little tighter but then it will start to slip on the motor shaft and the sprocket wont turn any more ,why can't i rotate the sprocket with the chain on it to move the slack to the other side with the tightening bolt? whenever i try and tighten the chain it just tightens the side with the bolt and the other side just stays loose , really fucking frustrating , i don't see why the damn sprocket will not turn to take up the slack from the other side, i don't know what is stopping it from moving , wouldn't it have been better to just put the chain on the sprocket 1st before putting in the motor then it would spin freely without the worm gear being there and i could just tighten the bolt and have the sprocket spin to take up slack from the other side since nothing would be interfering with it turning, now it won't turn at all and tightening the bolt just tightens the one side of the chain , the door works but i am paranoid it is going to break the sprocket or the top bearing under it ,it is taught on the one side with the bolt and on the other side the chain is sagging and hitting the top of outer trolley , i feel like i should take the motor off again to adjust the chain properly because i cant get the slack off the other side
Andrea Mitchell Hi, I didn't see your comment until now, just keep tightening the chain wth the door disconnected. The idler sprocket at the front of the door opener will turn and allow both sides to tighten.
thanks, nope it would not turn, just figured out to tighten it once with the door open and again with it closed , the chain is still loose and makes some noise but good enough i guess, now i am paranoid about it being too tight and breaking the sprocket bearing good video though i got it all replaced and all is working fine i think that it might be better to put the chain on and tighten it before bolting in the motor again so the sprocket on the opener will be able to turn when you tighten the chain and take up slack from both sides for whatever reason on mine the sprocket at the front did not budge when i tightened the chain and every time i tried it just made it it tight on one side and lose on the other ,doing it with the door open and then closed helped a little but but i still could not get it right
Very useful video! Rebuilt my own opener with a $20.00 kit, adjusted it all up, and it's smooth as butter now. **Best** details on doing the job compared to other videos.
you make this look real easy. it's not 123 but all your tips helped me get mine back together. Even though the gear shaft in the kit was a larger diameter than the bushing in the kit. Ask me how i know.(lol) Thanks for all your help Nick!
Nick, I cannot thank you enough. I just spent this Saturday morning following your detailed instructions and the old Craftsman 1/2 hp opener is working like new. This video was spot on!! Good luck to you young man.
Thanks, this the best complete video instruction I have seen with regard to this model garage opener. You have just saved me a great amount of time with my repair.
One of the best repair videos I have ever seen. Very detailed with lots of precautions, warnings, and tips. I now know that I can do this! Was about to buy a new unit. I also learned that since my sprocket was indeed moving around on top of the chassis, you said that is a worn bearing. My chain had come off. I got it back on & tightened & greased it. When I re-started the sprocket shaft broke. I think the door was closed and I had it in close mode - too much stress I assume. Thanks so much. My LiftMaster is old but still going. Now $25 repair instead of hundreds for a new unit.
Thanks soo much Nick. Followed this video exactly step by step with an Amazon gear and sprocket rebuild kit($23). Took my time and door is back humming along. Please keep up the great vids!!!! Be well.
Thanks the best garage door opener video. I dont remember any one else doing the pressure screws. i also like how you showed a too tight chain. Excellent.
Nick, your video was excellent and saved me a bundle of time and money. We followed your every step and after a few adjustments, the door works perfectly. Thank you.
Nick, your probably saved me $250 today and I burned a good two thousand calories watching the video, stopping it, climbing the ladder to do a step, then back to the video, back up the ladder... over and over. In the end the only issue I had was getting the motor back in and that was a minor alignment problem that a slight hammer tap solved. Great step by step!!
Best feeling ever! Running through the house yelling, "You have to pinch and remove the limit assembly!!!!"...while everyone looks at you like you're a crazy person.
Had to chime in and say thanks as well. There's no way I would have got through this with the instruction sheet that came with the kit. This was great. Thanks again!
Thanks Nick! The instructions that came with the gear replacement kit were sketchy for an amateur like me, but your video made the job easy. Appreciate you taking the time to make a very thorough video.
Nicely done Nick. My opener stripped the gear after great service for 17 years. I ordered parts and with your assistance it should be a piece of cake. Thanks for sharing. Fred
Hi Nick, just did the entire rebuild using your video as a guide and it was dead on! Great tutorial! Thank you for posting this. Now hopefully I will get another 24 years from my Craftsman (Liftmaster guts) garage door opener.
From Vancouver Canada Dec. 6, 2018, Nick thanks for your guidance. I just changed my Whisper Drive gears and it works fine. Without your informative video, I don't know if I can do it. Thanks.
Thanks for doing this step-by-step video. I was able to repair my 1991 Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener with a $18.00 kit and a little time this afternoon. It's working like new!
thanks so much! You rock! Like new again! Sprocket gear snapped off this morning when my dog ran through eye beam as door was being closed. The plastic gear was really beat up as well. 12 year old opener and it's our main entry and exit from the house so it gets a ridiculous amount of use. Great video. you saved me a bundle. 31 dollars for kit at Sears vs. 250 for new opener.
Awesome video! I followed your directions and was able to replace the gears/bushings on my 23-year-old garage door opener all by myself! :-) Thank you.
This was an excellent, informative video that explained everything clearly. Not sure I would have got it back together with the instructions. Many thanks
Great video & my thanks to you! I bought a rebuild kit on Amazon & utilized your steps to rebuild my Sears/Craftsman garage door opener. The only issue that I encountered was the new set screws were a bit too long, so I used the OEM set screws with the new motor shaft collar. Again, well done!
Thank you for the clear instructions. I was able to do this job my self thanks to your video. It took me about 5 hours but I took it slow and in the end my garage door works flawlessly. Great job keep up the DIY videos.
used your video for gear replacement on lift master it was excellent very informative still took me all dy pretty well but that was due to computer upstairs and looking for the next step .. very much appreciated thx , Pete.............
Thanks Nick. I am going to be tackling the replacement of the shaft on my door this upcoming weekend. Your time and efforts put into this video helps tremendously.
Wow, excellent job Nick. It's clear you have a firm handle on this, and a pleasure to see you do it. I feel a lot better about the future of America while there's guys like you rolling around. I'll be tackling my sheared sprocket shaft with confidence, thanks to you. Good luck to you in future, and thanks.
Just excellent. Very helpful and entertaining. Made job so much easier. Two comments for future inclusion: 1) you used vice grips on chain but didn't discuss, @ the "motor control" gear which set open/close setting was totally off because of stripped sprocket must be reset manually. This took me awhile to figure out since I could not get total door travel. Other than that, fantastic! Thanks.
Thanks for a great video! Wish I had seen the visegrip trick before I took my chain off the sprocket - pain in the butt getting it back on. Very good tips here.
Helped streamline the repair on my opener. I replaced both gears but did not get the downshaft/metal chain gear and top metal bushing mount. Luckily mine were in really good shape still (took apart and regreased) I had to readjust my down limit after install, this may have been for a frost heave (uninsulated garage in Alberta , also have not used opener since it stripped 2 years ago).
Good day sir and thank you for your time and information on this important repair, very helpful and informative I can see your experience on this line of work. One thing was that not all the plastic was clean on the lower part of the unit. We what to do 100% on the job 🤔 but for the most part the repair was completed and system was working good 😀👌
Your camera/phone? is fine. It wants to focus on the light dominate window in the background. Easy fixes: 1. Have a light shining on the machine or the operation. A well placed flashlight will do the trick. 2. change the pov and eliminate the light pollution. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.
Just finished a gear replacement. One thing I may have missed or it wasn't mentioned. Pretty minor but on my Craftsman there is a cover over the chain sprocket. When you put your gear shaft assembly in check to be sure that the holes in the gear assembly mounting plate for the "ears" on the sprocket cover are correctly lined up. Mine should have been front to back (there are two cover ears)
Thanks Nick! Very helpful! Especially the sections on setting and adjusting the chain (which are not well covered in the instructions with the rebuild kit)
Nick, thank you for this video. It help me easily replace the sprocket gear assembly on my GDO. I would not have been able to do it as easily with only the instructions that came with the the repair kit. And as you stated in your video ... Double check to make sure you have secured all connections BEFORE you replace the panels ... ask me how I know! Thanks again!
Hey Nick, Thanks so much for making this great video. I watched a bunch on the topic of reseating the chain and necessary adjustments; yours is by far the most useful to me with great examples of what to look for and how to adjust. This makes me way more confident regarding tomorrow morning's project. Thanks man!
Two important points: Do not over tighten the chain! If you do you do you will dramatically shorten the life of the chain sprocket. I tightened my chain to make it a little bit quieter and it snapped off on about two weeks. For safety and longer motor and gear life, adjust the up and down torque to the minimum torque that will raise and lower your garage door reliably.

i think that it might be better to put the chain on and tighten it before bolting in the motor again so the sprocket on the opener will be able to turn when you tighten the chain and take up slack from both sides
for whatever reason on mine the sprocket at the front did not budge when i tightened the chain and every time i tried it just made it it tight on one side and lose on the other ,doing it with the door open and then closed helped a little but but i still could not get it right

+1 on a great job on the video.. So much better than vague written instructions. Took my time, lots of pause, rewind, etc. Saved me a bundle!

Thanks Nick! The instructions that came with the gear replacement kit were sketchy for an amateur like me, but your video made the job easy. Appreciate you taking the time to make a very thorough video.
Followed your instructions and two hours later I was back in business. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video! You cover all the potential sticky/ error points.

Thanks for doing this step-by-step video. I was able to repair my 1991 Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener with a $18.00 kit and a little time this afternoon. It's working like new!
Fantastic job. Wanted to say thanks...fixed mine yesterday using your step-by-step instructions!

Glad to hear you got everything working again!
Great Video Nick, Don't worry about the blurry stuff. Your explanations more than make up for it. Well done!
Thanks for the video Nick.
I followed your instructions and successfully rebuilt our opener this last weekend!
Great video. Easy to follow instructions. Saved me the 90 dollar service call.
Awesome video! I followed your directions and was able to replace the gears/bushings on my 23-year-old garage door opener all by myself! :-) Thank you.
Awesome. Thank you for this detailed video. Was able to fix a broken sprocket at my first attempt for $17. Saved $125 😎
Great video Nick. Good balance between the essentials and not too detail. Very informative.
Thank you Nick for your thoughtful video! I just finished replacing the gear and sprocket successfully thanks to you.
I think you covered everything Nick. It looks like I will be ordering the kit and doing this exact same job when it arrives.
Thank you for the clear instructions. I was able to do this job my self thanks to your video. It took me about 5 hours but I took it slow and in the end my garage door works flawlessly. Great job keep up the DIY videos.
Great video and explanations of the procedures and parts . Also liked you kept the minor mishaps in there . 👍 , ✌️ .
Wow...........what a great video for basically rebuilding the complete opener, Thank you, you got one for spring replacement, lol
used your video for gear replacement on lift master it was excellent very informative still took me all dy pretty well but that was due to computer upstairs and looking for the next step .. very much appreciated thx , Pete.............
Dude, thanks a TON. Great video, saved me $400 in service calls or from simply changing my garage door opener altogether.
Thanks, great how to video especially setting the limits and force, ace job.
Excellent video I just used this video to install the Gear Drive and sprocket on my garage door opener also. Thank you
Look like you have a 1969 Road Runner you're working on!! OI love those old muscle cars!
Thanks, Nick. Very thorough video. Saved my bacon today.
Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Very easy to follow and worked out perfectly.
Thanks for a great video! Wish I had seen the visegrip trick before I took my chain off the sprocket - pain in the butt getting it back on. Very good tips here.
Thanks so much! This explained exactly what I need to do to fix mine. Gear kit on order.
Great detailed video, Being prepaired makes it a lot easier Thanks
Fantastic video, I did exactly what you said and $24 later it's up and running again. Great job. Thanks a million. God bless.....
Thanks Nick, easy to follow, lots of detailed steps...a great first video
Excellent. Ordering parts now! Tip: When recording inside, block all outside windows to keep the bright outside light from confusing the camera.
Nicely detailed video Nick! It helped me repair my Liftmaster 1/3 HP. Thank You!
Very useful video, it covers the whole thing. Great explanation, very detailed. Thanks
Little long but for nuts like us 😜 who love detail it was great. Thanks!
Really thorough Job. Thank you. Mine just went today. Ordered the parts from Amazon and will be doing this Saturday.
Thanks very much - outstanding video - Saved me lots of $$ by walking me step by step through the process. Thanks again Nick.
Thanks for creating this vid! I really appreciate the detail! You saved me from countless mistakes.
Nice tutorial! Helps tremendously! Facing this same repair right now.
Thanks Nick, you helped save me a lot of money and frustration. Great video!
Thanks, filing the motor shaft is a nice trick
Great tutorial, with good specific details...very well done. Thanks.
Just wanted to say thanks for such a thorough video. It helped me tremendously.
Extremely helpful! Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
Best instructions yet!
Great complete explanation, including little details such as fine and course threads! Thanks.
Perfect, got my opener fixed for $20 in about an hour.
Outstanding how-to video!
Thanks Nick! Very helpful! Especially the sections on setting and adjusting the chain (which are not well covered in the instructions with the rebuild kit)
This video instruction is well done. Please pay attention to his comment on making sure the motor rotates counter clock wise.
Great video. Works like charm 🤗
Great video, I start this task tomorrow!
Hey Nick, Thanks so much for making this great video. I watched a bunch on the topic of reseating the chain and necessary adjustments; yours is by far the most useful to me with great examples of what to look for and how to adjust. This makes me way more confident regarding tomorrow morning's project. Thanks man!
Good job Nick - really informative video! Thanks for this.
Great video, excellent sound. Helped a lot. Thanks!
Two important points:
Do not over tighten the chain!
