Adam, there are dozens of RUclips videos about this issue, but yours is by far the best. You take a long time in details, you show some issues that nobody else shows. Thank you very much, your video helped me fix my garage perfectly.

Have performed this task twice now. A few more bits of information: 1] cover screws are 1/4-inch; 2] chain anchor nuts are 1/2-inch; 3] sprocket mount screws are 5/16-inch; 4] check bolts holding entire unit to ceiling....1/2-inch nuts; 5] chain is heavy..be very careful of fingers when moving it on and off of the sprocket...potential for injury; 6] using both the Vice-Grip trick and marking chain position, it was necessary to adjust limits......door always moved too far up and didn't move down far enough....so I would adjust both limits before first functional test by one full turn [360 degrees] and definitely perform the safety test. Also make sure that you have not loosened/detached the black sector wheel which mounts on the outer end of the worm gear shaft while messing about. Pre-threading the sprocket mount screw holes is pure genius...do it !! Worst parts: many trips up and down ladder & gooey grease.

    Hi Adam,
My name is Andrew. I just wanted to say thanks a million! Because of your videos I was able to fix my garage door in addition to adjusting the motor once I changed the gear & sprocket! A garage door man was telling me I needed to get a new motor/opener.

Thank you for the video. Have the same model, had the same problem. This video helped immensely. The one thing I recommend at the nd is to have the starting point @9:55 with the door all the way down on the floor and disconnected from the chain, run the chain to the closed position, then connect the door to the chain , so you don't have to worry about the limits, at least one of them.

THANK YOU so much for this video. I had never tried anything like this before. I'm not very handy. My door stopped working and I realized the sprocket had snapped off, separated completely from the gear shaft. No wonder the chain wasn't moving. Other than being a very old unit, I believe I found the reason for the stress. Anyway, I ordered the replacement part and then followed your instructions perfectly. You gave so much information that I wouldn't have had a clue about.. .like threading the screw holes. I got the new gear and sprocket replaced and greased up. The door still wouldn't function properly though, the adjustment screws weren't having any impact. No matter how much I turned, the door did the same exact thing every time. I finally figured out that a sensor (yellow wire) had come off the up adjustment screw. I got it back on, made the proper adjustments, and it WORKS PERFECTLY!!! Thanks again for saving me money AND for helping me gain a big boost in the accomplishment department! I'll always check here first whenever there's something around the house that needs to be done

Kathy, please see my post on 8/29/20. How did you realign you chain? This seems to be a no-brainer video. Thanks Adam. i had my doors replaced about three months ago and not sure the installer checked the balance.

Winter? You bet. My gear just went (replaced the other door's gear drive assembly in Feb 2015), 26 years was a good run. Definitely time to balance the doors - springs are probably 10+ years old, I remember replacing them at least that long ago.
Only comment is that when placing the assembly in, rotate the assembly to line up the 3 cap screw holes with the gear just above the worm gear, so you won't have to turn the gears just to get the holes lined up for screwing the 3 in. That much I remember from Feb 2015. Great video - excellent clarity, great tips. Many thanks for posting this & doing an A+ job with it.

I'd ordered the gear and sprocket last week and it arrived a few days ago. I took the time to watch this video before attempting the job and must say it made all the difference! I just replaced the gear and sprocket in my 10 year old Chamberlain 1/2hp chain drive opener, and this video was a huge help! Thanks! I would add that in my case, it seemed that once it was all back together the opener seemed to think that the door was in the up position, when it was in fact closed. The only way I could get it to work was by manually moving the chain to where the door would be in the up position. Then after a few tries readjusting the down limit, it all works perfectly. Great super helpful video!

Excellent tutorial video Adam! I did run into one problem thou. You don't mention to align the tabs for the chain sprocket cover parallel to the chain. It was not until I went to put the cap back on at the very end that I realized the problem. You might want to add this to your video. Thanks!

One more "Thank you" for this useful video. As such videos go it's extremely well done, mostly just the essentials, no longer than it needs to be and no shorter. The one thing I wish is that your other video on adjusting the chain included what to do if you couldn't mark it or it somehow got messed up. We figured out how to get through it, though. Thanks again.
PS. This was on a weird opener that had a red/orange learn button, but responded only to a green remote. Something went terribly wrong during manufacturing through when my sister's family had it installed.

Outstanding video. My son and I bonded over this repair project.
The only issue we ran into was our sprocket had sheared off completely causing the chain to hang to the floor.
This caused the up/down limits to be completely thrown off.
(The garage door "thought" it was up and was trying to go down when it was already down)
We left the cover off to make the adjustments to the up/down limits.
We had to pull off the small gear with the E clip and manually reposition the gear on the switch drive shaft that it interfaces with.
(Disengage Door, start trolley and stop it about half way then manually turn the switch drive shaft to approximately half way point to match where trolley is)
We could then adjust the UP/DOWN limits until it worked properly.

very helpful video. it was super easy to change the gear. one thing I will also cover that I have to look for in another video is what to do if the gear breaks and how to position the chain. I didn't know the motor tries to close the door instead of open it. so I position my chain in the close position. after some more research all I had to do is disengage the chain press the button on the wall and hit the sensor. that way the motor opens the door. after that I position my chain in the open position. thank you so much for you video was very helpful.

This is a really good video. I replaced my gear sprocket assembly and everything is working again. It wasn't quite as easy as the video depicts but the video provides a lot of tips which will save you a lot of aggravation. My biggest trouble was getting the old assembly out and the new one installed because I didn't have the right tools for the job. The only thing that I was not able to install was the cap that goes over the chain sprocket because if you don't install it with the slots facing the right direction you can't put it on. No big deal though. All in all this saved me hundreds of dollars! Thanks for a great video!

After screwing in the all the bolts I went to put the cap on and realized I should have rotated the two openings so the cap would not interfere with the chain, so no cap on mine :-)

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this very well made video. I purchased the exact same gear kit for my Craftsman opener that broke shortly after we moved into our new house (and in the winter no less). I watched this video a few times in preparation and then step-by-step while replacing the main sprocket, which had initially broken completely off, and it went about as well as I could have hoped. Watching this video was much easier than reading the vague instructions that came with the kit. Thanks again!

two additional tips: 1) My unit has a plastic chain spreader at the top, fastened by two screws. When installing the new kit, you need to align the new top piece so the open hole in the correct position for you to re-install the chain spreader. 2) Because the top sprocket had broken right off on my unit, the motor had travelled some when we tried to use the opener. Before re-installing the chain and chain spreader, I had to run the opener so it is at the closed position and then re-installed the chain so that the slider piece was close to where it normally is when the door is closed. I only had to do minor adjustments afterwards to the up/down controls. thanks for the video

Good tip on marking the chain, that way you are close. I had to make several adjustments up and down. Another good tip you mentioned was don't let it hit the nut and bolt. I think mine got out of adjustment and wala, it hit the bolt and busted the gear.

I followed your instructions for replacing the gears and even paid a company to come out and balance the door as you recommended. They complimented me on the gear installation. I had the same issue that Paul Hopper mentioned in an earlier comment regarding making sure the two square holes on the top plate of the gear apparatus are lined up parallel to the chain bar. Otherwise the plastic top cap can't be re-installed. Seems to be the only detail you left out of the video. Otherwise this is an excellent video with clear instructions.

Thanks for the video. My opener had shims on the shaft when I put it together it made a horrible noise without them. The kit came with replacements and once they were in stalled it ran much smoother with minimal noise

Great tips here and the videos help a lot. However if you are like me and you have not touched the unit in 26 years you might want to change all the bushings and the worm gear and clean and lubricate everything. To do that you detach and disassemble the whole unit. And it takes several hours. The lock collar on the worm gear has allen screws that scored the shaft and the bushing was tight coming off and on. Also the new chain gear and bushing (shown above) was not lubricated so I took the retaining clip off and lubricated it and put it back together. My original chain gear had worn out the top bushing and wore out the gears so I replaced the bottom bushing too. The worm gear was worn too. I would not want to do it standing on a ladder with the motor hanging - upside down on a bench it was tough enough. Got it all back together hopefully another 20 years. One down and one to go.
