I like how you told them you needed 8k to be out of the ice. Seeing snowy mountains in Australia is something we are not used to. Great ILS to minima mate! Loved the music at the end...
I wasn’t liking the look of 7, you can see the ice forming on the camera. ATC here are awesome, they’ll usually work out a way to give you what you want, and I mentioned icing so he knew what I was facing. Thanks mate, looking forward to your next one as always.
Thank you Stefan! I'm a pretty fresh private pilot, but already over 40 and I love flying, but I'm sometimes afraid of it and sometimes something in between. I really appreciate your permanent encouragement to follow the path, to train, to push yourself - just to climb the mountain. That makes me feel that you have been maybe in the same kind of "world of emotions" during the past 14 years.
Hey Stef- great video! Would love to grab an instrument view and watch the approach real time next time it’s down to minima- thankyou for showing us that ILS though- real IFR! Looking forward to hearing about your journey and hopefully Milkshakes? ;)
It’s awesome watching you evolve as a pilot. You have such confidence in controlling the aircraft and talking with ATC which greatly surpasses the level you were at only a year ago.
It's a real privilege to be able to take you all on this journey with me. Hopefully watching me progress helps you all do the same as well, so this comment means a lot. Thanks Callum.
Lovely video, Stef. The tension was real coming in to land at Canberra. It is kind of telling though, that you don’t see a lot of snow otherwise, when you call them “The Snowy Mountains”, haha
Thank you, yes it’s still a novelty to see snow in Australia I’ll be honest. But it’s really beautiful in those mountains. The high country of Australia is such a lovely, unspoilt place.
Welcome to my home town! Yes, Canberra gets some funny weather patterns. Made me chuckle on your approach when all was relatively clear until finals. The whole city sits in a bowl and the surrounding terrain causes the crud to form into a puddle in the centre! Sat in a hold over Tumut for half an hour waiting for conditions to improve once and on another flight shot the ILS twice before diverting to our alternate (YGLB).
Thanks for another terrific episode, Stef. This episode brought back fond memories of my first approach to minimums in actual IMC - both the pucker factor and the sense of accomplishment. Well done, my friend!
Wonderful video, landing and just the right amount of excitement! It's always a fantastic feeling when white-out turns to a very welcoming runway! I remember my first practice for this type of landing wearing a 'hood', listening intently to radio, instructor and my heart-beat! Please post more videos!!
Another great video Stef...as a former resident of the A.C.T some many years ago I can attest to the trying conditions of fog at RAAF Fairbairn (Canberra Airport) The views on take off were sensational as was the co piloting skills of Milkshake during the landings and take offs..well done as always!!
Great Video Stefan and all your hard work in respect of the flying knowledge you have learnt like Instrument rating sure come apparent in this flight. Like how you spotted the shadow of Milkshake on the wing. You treated us to two different views on arrival and departure . ✈️
This is one of my favourite videos by you. I never thought I'd need an instrument rating but it would be incredible to take my flying to the next level.
As always, consistent and solid content. Your suggestion of "getting there" would make excellent content. Mark and Mike Patey's story is also an interesting journey. Thanks Stef.
I am not a pilot and have no intention of being one or buying a plane, but I do love these videos lol feels like you are taking the viewer with you on the trip.
Hi mate, fellow business owner and pilot myself. Love your channel. I did my CPL while running a business, know what you mean by sacrifice and hard work all while trying to maintain the business. Great work!
Love your content and cant wait to hear more about your journey to get to where you are thats off to you. Would love to hear more about what costs are incurred at airports like Canberra ect as a curiosity and information to flying expenses if possible.
Well Done Stefan.. another great adventure.. Single PIlot IFR/IMC is not for the faint hearted.. good job.. its a Lonely Feeling, especially the last 500 ft and then boom!.. runway.. :) Im a 737 Capt, and fly Bush in a Husky.. what a contrast.. But I love the SR22 as well.. keep up the good work mate..
Thanks Jay, I think there’s a fair bit I can do to help others with finding a path of freedom, if that’s time or money or travel or flying or whatever. So I appreciate the comment, thanks.
Thanks Don, yes I had a couple of options if I couldn't get in so then it was just a case of fly to the numbers and take the "can I, can't I" out of the equation. Thanks for watching, stef
1977 - about this time of year and I was waiting at Canberra Airport for a flight to Melbourne. I was in the Air Force and returning to Laverton. Fog was thick and all the flights were delayed - nothing going anywhere. Out of the gloom comes a C130A Hercules - lands and taxies to the Air Force Ramp. Quick phone call to Air Movements - " Where is that Herc going?" - Laverton. "Any room on board for a couple of stranded Airmen?" - Yep - get here PDQ. Herc loads pretty much immediately and off to Laverton we went. TAA even let me use the ticket on another day and I saved the taxi fare from the city to Laverton. Got to love the Air Force can do attitude and the fog.
Great video Stefan. Big fan of the channel. Don't forget to remove the CAPS placard. I would hate to see you trying to remove that at 700 AGL after an engine failure. I have an SR22T here in Colorado if you are ever in the area and want to fly. I am in Cootamundra a couple of times a year and would love to fly with you or meet up at the Warbirds demonstration in Temora.
I flew night cargo from SFO to LAX, BUR, PHX and SLC in the '70s in Beech D18s and then DC-3s. During the Summer when the coastal fog was almost always thick at SFO and LAX, we had to shoot ILS approaches. A lot of freighters arrived at LAX every night between Midnight and 6AM. LAX couldn't shut down, so the weather was never below 200/1/2 no matter what it actually was. There were nights that we hand flew Cat III approaches before they existed. We got very good at shooting these approaches between DC-8s and 727s at 140kts., then quickly slowing to landing speed of 70 to 80kts. as we got close to the runway. On a couple of nights the only way I knew we were on the ground was the fact that I heard the squeak of the landing gear touching down. I could barely see the runway and taxiway lights to taxi in. It was a different time in aviation. Jets had been in use for about 9 - 10 years, and just about all Captains were very good stick and rudder, seat of the pants flyers.
i had a lot of time in Helio Couriers. Our home airport in Sonoma, CA was in uncontrolled airspace. I, and others based at the airport, considered 50 to 100 ft. a good VFR ceiling. We made up our own approaches. Napa, about ten miles away had a localiizer approach. If they had a mile visibility, we'd shoot the approach into Napa, ask for a Special VFR and turn left to scud run over the vineyards and flat farmland to Schellville. I started an aerial photo business with my Helio Courier in the '90s. Here's my old demo tape: ruclips.net/video/A00xrvdwLAU/видео.html
Oh man! Just before watching this I was wondering "wonder if he ever comes into Canberra..." Next minute.. Happy to show you decent coffee joints next time you're in town!

@@StefanDrury Well you do deserve it for your effort. Oh and one thing I forgot. For the landing I would've liked to see the instruments as that is basically what you see. Happy landings!

Definitely worthwile pursuing an instrument rating as shown here. I trust the conference went well. I see you are checking your BP on the way home, hope all is well. Thanks mate
Haha, well spotted! I was going to edit that out but thought I’d leave it in, remind everyone that we all slip up, even with your own aircraft registration 🤦♂️
Nice flight (and video) Stef! Out of interest, had you considered Cooma / Snowy Mountains airport as an alternate? It may have been affected by the same weather as Canberra - if not, though, it's only 120km from CBR, with no significant terrain in between, so you could have waited it out there and done a quick hop when the weather allowed. I also believe there is a Hertz car rental there, and it's a 1.5 hour drive into the National Museum (i.e. anywhere in central Canberra). Maybe something to keep in mind if you're ever headed back to Canberra!
Albury is lower and the weather was better. I hadn’t honestly considered Cooma due the elevation, but yeah under the right conditions and due to its proximity to CBR it’s certainly a viable option.
Hey Stef. A bit tense that one! I've noticed you haven't removed the CAPS cover in the last few videos like you normally do. You still tap it on your 500ft check but leave the cover in place. Is that just an aesthetic choice?

Of course as a non pilot I maybe out of line telling one who is off about this, but leaving the cover over the CAPS release lever seems to add one extra movement if it's ever needed to be called upon in an emergency. Yes, I’m trying a line level adjuster and recording directly into the recorder rather than from a mic in my headset. I showed it in one of my previous videos, will show it in future vlogs if I stick with it after testing.
