My opinion on "you like every book you read" is that tis cause 1) you know how to pick 'em, or 2) you know how to dnf 'em, or both. Other ppl being miserable because they can't like most of what they read is not the issue I need to be responsible for)))

Absolutely! I know my average would be higher if I didn't make it a point to get out of my comfort zone or try new releases to let everyone know if I think they're worth it or popular books to see if I'll like them. Even though it's more hit and miss, I enjoy it like that!

Goodreads tip: You can make a DNF shelf! Add the shelf name, go to Edit Shelves, and make the category 'exclusive'. So whenever you're reading something on your currently reading shelf and you want to dnf it, you can click the same drop down menu you would use to say 'read'. That way you can look back on all your DNFs without it changing your Goodreads stats.
I did not explain it well, but I hope it helps!

My biggest goal in 2022 was to dnf books I wasn't enjoying more often and it made my average star rating go from 3.2 in 2021 to 4.3 in 2022. I consider that goal achieved but now I have to think up another goal for this year. So far my only goal is to read through all the books I own but haven't read yet, but there's only 21 of them so I want to try and think up another challenge for myself. But I'm sure that after watching everyone set their goals I'll find some inspiration.

Actually, you can create a DNF shelf on Goodreads and mark it as exclusive, which will mean books marked DNF won't show up on your read or to-read shelves, but you can only do it on the computer. The cool thing is that once you create a custom bookshelf for DNF, you will be able to access and use that bookshelf on your app. That's what I do.

I recently started trying to challenge myself to actually try and read some of my unread books I’ve had on my shelves for years and I’ve unhauled most of them but it’s still been incredibly satisfying to do. It’s nice to finally just confirm once and for all they aren’t for me because usually if I’ve been putting them off some part of me suspects that will be true lol. So it’s nice to finally just get them out of the way so I don’t have the guilt of having spent the money to buy them and then never read them, and it also allows me the space to buy more books I’m probably more likely to enjoy.
Also, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it but I wanted to recommend The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal as something you might enjoy. It’s a sci-fi mystery that takes place in the future on essentially a cruise spaceship where a couple go on their honeymoon. While there a passenger gets murdered and the main character’s husband is accused and the main character tries to do everything she can to clear him and find the real culprit. Alcohol is brought up a lot but this definitely doesn’t fall into the drunk-woman-unreliable-narrator trope and it’s not a domestic thriller. There’s a lot of the sci-fi stuff but it’s not super dense or complex (I understood it easily and I rarely read sci-fi). It’s also super inclusive and I think really well written. The author’s one of my favorites though so I may be biased lol. I could be wrong and you may not like it but I figured I recommend just in case!

One of my favorite stats to keep track of is how many series I start/finish in a year and how many series I'm currently up-to-date with. 2022 was definitely series-heavy for me, I started 8, finished 5 and I'm up-to-date on 72% of 11 series. Over all the years (since 2014) I tracked my book stats I also finished 30 series and decided to not finish 21.
I also have stats on average star ratings for different categories, but I think the most interesting stat for you is that I gave books YOU recommended 4.17 stars on average vs 4.05 which is my average on all books.

I wish I was better at tracking on Goodreads. I used to be, and I have my periods, but lately I'm just terrible about it. I've had a good year I think. I've read genres I don't usually go into like westerns (True Grit was really good) and even a romance thriller (Verity was quick and fun, but whatever). Of course I've read SciFi and straight lit, but I've also read several of your recommendations which were all very enjoyable. The most impactful was definitely The Passenger/ Stella Maris. I've had some that I looked forward to and felt let down (I'm looking at you Blake Crouch) and ones I was surprised by (Never the Wind).
You know, two (living) nonfiction authors I have always loved are Dava Sobel and Mary Roach. They both write science themed, Sobel has also gone into the fiction world with Galileo's Daughter, and Roach is funny, but they write about science in such a wonderful way.

Hey we read the same number of books (130), although my avg page count is lower, so you win! 😂😂 As for star ratings, everyone interprets them so differently. For me 3 is an okay read, 4 is one I really enjoyed, and 5 is wowza superlative everyone should read it now. 2's are ones that straight-up annoyed me, and a 1 is one I would DNF if not forced to read it, so I don't have a lot of those. I really aim for most of mine to be 4, so my avg rating is usually 3.8 - 3.9, even though I'm quite stingy with 5's. Why wouldn't I want to like most of the books I read?? I think your Thriller category is dragging your average down!
I am a library super-user. I also just did my stats, and a whopping 111 came from the library (that's physical but also ebooks and audiobooks - the latter two I exclusively get from the library; I've never bought an e- or audiobook, which together are about half of my reading).

I've been tracking book word count as opposed to pages read. The reason for this is that page totals tend to be arbitrary, and according to type face size. So you could have a book such as A Feast for Crows (paperback) that is 974 pages, and has 295,000 words, whereas A Dance with Dragons has 1051 pages, and 414,788 words. The word count is increased by near 120,000 words in the latter, but only 180 pages. In the former, the max number of words per page is 374 and in the latter it is 451 words, an increase of near 75 words per page. In this way, I've used word count to set my goals for the year. The Kobo website is good for showing words in a book.

I give 3, but mostly 4 and 5 stars to most books I read. It is not because I am not picky. I am. I simply am very good at making the selection beforehand, because I know myself very well and I think I have good intuition when it comes to pick up a book. Also, your average rating may be almost the same in different years despite you feeling very differently because the mean is not a very accurate statistic measurement. Meaning, outliers count a lot when the mean is used. And they skew everything because of how much they weigh. I do not know honestly why the mean is such a popular statistic form of measurement, when I think the median should be way more.

I like "year published" stats as well, but few years ago I've read Gilgamesh and it completely destroyed the graph

3.5 is such a high average rating honestly! 👀

Lol I usually just keep my mouth shut when people talk about their average rating because last year my average was 4.4 😅. I don’t want people to think I have no critical thoughts about anything haha. I am pretty easy to please but I think it’s more that I rarely read things are outside what I expect to like or things I haven’t heard reviews for. Maybe some people find that boring, but if I’m looking for variety I try to read more diverse authors rather than more diverse types of literature.

I do indeed like every book I read. 😂 Plus I feel bad for being “mean” to the authors?

Emily, a question: would you be comfortable sharing who the non-binary author you've read is? 14:07
If you already said and I missed I apologise in advance, I'm trying do expand my author reading list as well

@@Lion_Tess if you want a couple books with non-binary rep, I recommend Son of the Storm by Suyi Davies Okungbowa and The Singing Hills Saga by Nghi Vo! I recommend starting with When the Tiger Came down the Mountain even though that's book 2. There are probably several more but those are the two that came to mind.

I give 4 and 5 stars so much because I DNF books that I don’t like. Like my ratings are high because I don’t read books I don’t like lol

It's okay if you read just scifi & fantasy. A lot of RUclipsrs have made it a point of reading just scifi (Media Death Cult) and/or fantasy (Daniel Greene).

Oh absolutely but ever since starting Booktube, I've always read from every genre so it's always weird when people comment I solely read SFF (I've also had people say I read mostly YA which is also weird)

I’m using the CAWPILE spreadsheet that G from the channel bookroast provides each year, I like the fact that it is really detailed 🤍 this year’s version includes also buddy reads and readathons, and separate tabs for series management and new book purchases (including cost)
