  • Davy Graham - Bruton Town - from album Fire in the Soul
    Bruton Town
is a traditional English folk murder ballad that tells the story of how two brothers murder a servant who is courting their sister. There are many versions of the song going by a number of different titles.

That is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I wasn't blown away by his early stuff, that song where he's standing around and people are watching him?. This though is from another place entirely. This guy is like the Michelangelo of guitar; real wizardry and no showy crap. That was amazing, I'm very impressed.

Sandy’s version is totally different class to this. Another stratosphere.

Thanks for posting this. Even though the subject matter is a bit grim, it's a joy to hear Davy Graham play Bruton Town.

Pentangle did a fantastic cover of this song. Love the dark yet colorful journey they take me on from a well that draws on sorrow and woe

I love Pentangle and thought them so very original until I heard Davy Graham. I feel a bit now that it took five of them to do what he could do alone (or in this case with one of the Pentangle with him). It's taken the edge off for me, but yes they're still maybe the best band ever to come out of Britain.

@@psychoprosthetic it's not like Jansch, Renbourn et al weren't upfront about being heavily influenced by Graham. Personally I don't think Bert and John's solo achievements were less than Graham's (rather more to my mind), though Graham was certainly the more inventive guitarist.

Its a grim town. As one of my school mates succinctly said - the rain falls down on a humdrum town, this town had dragged me down. Actually its a very interesting place if you didn't grow up there. Steeped in bloody tales and fascinating architecture.

...and anyone who did grow up there should be more grateful that they werent bought up in a faceless city suburb like where I was :| it is a nice town

In Bruton Town there lived a noble man
He had two sons and a daughter fair
By night and day they were contriving
For to fill their sister's heart with care
One night one night our restless young girl
One brother rose up from his bed
He heard the servant court their sister
Oh he heard they had a mind to wed
Oh when he rose the very next morning
      Went searching for the servant-man
And when he found him this young man he murdered
Oh left him lying in the briars around
Oh she went to bed a-crying and lamenting
And thinking of her own true love
And as she slept she dreamt that she saw him
A-lying in the countryside all covered with gore and blood
Oh brothers, brothers why do you whisper
And what's become of this servant man?
Oh we lost him when we were a-contending
We lost him were he won't ever be found
Oh she early rose the very next morning
      And searched the countryside around
And there she saw her own dear jewel
A-lying in the briars where he'd been found
Three days and nights she'd lie by him
She thought her heart it would break with woe
When a cruel hunger came upon her
And in despair to her home she did go
Oh sister, sister why do you whisper
And won't you tell us where you've been
Stand off, stand off you bloody butchers
My love and I you have all slain
