HERE IS SOME INFO ABOUT PORTSALON
Golf has been played on the Portsalon links since the 1880's.
The club was one of the founder members of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the oldest golfing union in the world. Originally designed by Charles Thompson of Portrush, the layout has evolved over the decades with significant changes being undertaken under the guidance of Pat Ruddy in 2000.
Currently ranked in the top 25 courses in Ireland by Golf Digest, Portsalon continues to progress, with the 2014 Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley, guiding further improvements.
Nestled under the Knockalla mountains and stretching along the magnificent Ballymastocker beach, a true test of links golf presents itself. Above all, a warm welcome awaits you.
Portsalon Golf club was founded by Colonel B.J Barton in 1891. Colonel Barton established the Portsalon hotel and golf links and was very forward thinking in Portsalon becoming one of the founder member of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the oldest golf union in the world. The course was designed by Charles Thompson, the Portrush professional. The links quickly earned a reputation as one of the best around and attracted visitors from near and far.
In 1899, Col. Barton presented the club with the Barton Cup, to be played for annually. This competition is still run each year on the August Bank Holiday. Previous winners of the cup have come from locations as far afield as Johannesburg, Southport, Toronto and Edinburgh.
The reputation of the club grew so quickly that in 1905 the course was selected to host the Irish Ladies Championship. The championship was won by Miss May Hezlet from Royal Portrush, who beat her sister Florence by 2 and 1 in the final. May was the leading golfer of her time and her 1905 success was the second of 3 titles in a row.
In 1912, the Irish Ladies Championship returned to Portsalon. This time Mabel Harisson was the victor, completing a hat-trick of titles, having won at Newcastle in 1910 and The Island in 1911. In doing so, she emulated May Hezlet's achievement.

Such a great course. Again, you can't go wrong with golf in northwest Ireland. The clubhouse restaurant is awesome too. Beautiful dark wood interior with great food and spectacular views. 🍻

I played this course in July 22 when we went up to stay a week in kerrykeal it’s a fantastic course , Pat Ruddy owns the European Club in Wicklow you can see his input once you’ve seen the European club ,
When you come out of the car park turn left and follow the road to kerrykeal over the mountain, what a fantastic county Donegal is , was my first time in Donegal about 4 hour drive from Dublin and worth every minute of the drive .

Great video, has the barlow had lessons cos where is captain slice😮he used to have a stance so open his right foot was still back on the last green, now he hits draws, Course lovely but £125 is very pricey still suppose it keeps golfers like me off it😊

I LOVE Portsalon, and can count myself lucky as a previous Barton Cup winner. Back in the day when there was no clubhouse and you had to walk in your studs down to the pier for a bag of chips between matches ;-)

Have played many a time at Portsalon myself, definitely one of the best links in the country
The 2nd hole in Port Salon is probably one of the prettiest holes Ive ever played. Only a short drive to the 3 courses at Rosapenna. Best golfing trip Ive ever done good value great courses and creamy pints.

The drive along Fanad to Portsalon is up there with the best drives in the world. My folks are from Strabane so just across the border and we had many a day out in Donegal growing up. I’ve always fancied playing Portsalon and it’s definitely on the bucket list after this video.

used to play in donegal with a big group of family and friends for a week every september in the 90’s as my mum was from dunfanaghy
Port Salon, Rossapena and Ballyliffen were always highlights of the trip

My Dad was born next to Otway golf club , at a place called Saltpans ,Rathmullan about 10 miles from Portsalon. My Dad was a great golfer , as were all my uncles. It's a beautiful part of the world.
