The row of black boxes appears when the PC88 and PC88MX is initially powered on. Based on my observations, the boxes go away when the unit has proper power. If you keyboard is displaying a line of boxes and a hard rest does not fix the issue, my initial observation is VR1 and VR2 are probably showing voltage
look at a tutorial on how to solve that same problem since my pc 88 mx got like this ... and if the solution is to change the battery and make a prescription ... since it gets stuck on that checkered screen ... I invite you for you to see, the tutorial is on youtube and it is in Spanish
Unfortunately I am not in Houston. I would check to see if any components are loose and need to be resoldered. Otherwise you probably have a bad component.
Thank so much for the reply. Going to make a couple of calls locally and share your suggestions to hopefully help them get straight to the problem. I don't want to get rid of my keyboard because I really do love it. Had it since it came out.... @@bowhaymgr
Hi Mr Razor, I just picked up a kurzweil pc88mx at a thift store. It didn't have a power adapter or anything else. I bought one and I can turn it on. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes it stays stuck on the line of boxed in the display when I power it on. It's an intermittent problem. I'm not nearly as electronically gifted as you are. Do you think its related to the capacitors and is it worth fixing? I'm in Durham NC. What kind of electrician would able fix this? Thanks much.
You should be able to find a keyboard repair service in the area and eBay does sell a power supply refurbishment kit that has all of the part. www.ebay.com/itm/276317815064?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=276317815064&targetid=2299003535955&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9194525&poi=&campaignid=21672900668&mkgroupid=175573326908&rlsatarget=pla-2299003535955&abcId=10012303&merchantid=6296724&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwufq2BhAmEiwAnZqw8tAKW7_6XR8eFm4x6jbgOBkVB2P9zvPmXDzUyf2zhyOQtcC0UI8rbRoCPnUQAvD_BwE
