  • The Second Pass, and WCS Oriental Luxury Cream
    Matt here with another Daily Shave video and vintage straight razor shave and tutorial.
    The Brush: West Coast Shaving Infinity Brush with 26mm three band finest badger knot. This US artisan-made brush handle is a unique ergonomic and comfortable shape. It’s a stunning pour with some nice iridescence and depth. It seems to change in the different light. The knot is fairly dense but not a lather hog. The loft is set at the sweet spot giving it decent scrub and minimal floppiness. The fan splays easily and covers a lot of real estate. This is a stunning brush offered at a competitive price. Look out for the weekly brush drops.
    The Soap: WCS Oriental. (Luxury Cream base by Catie’s Bubbles). The scent is a 8/10 scent strength thick woody classic oud-rose combo, with well balanced spiciness, leaning more woody and spicy than floral - the rose is subtle. This lather is thirsty, with a wonderful creamy and fatty feel on the face. This latest luxury cream base by Catie’s Bubbles easily generates mounds of peaky, dense lather.
    The Razor: Tanifuji Spalding 6/8 full hollow spike point 1950’s Japanese steel.
    The Aftershave: WCS Oriental. Same scent as the soap, but a little brighter and less dense. The scent on this aftershave is very strong and lasts for hours. It works well for the cooler weather.
    Tip of the Day: Check out the video for a tutorial with an approach for straight razor beginners with a focus on the second pass.

    Great Job! Although I have been straight razor shaving for a little over a year I enjoy seeing how others approach angles and techniques.Even though you are a one armed bandit 😉 I picked up a few great pointers. Your a natural teacher Matt.🤜🤛

    Very good informative video. I took up wet shaving a few months ago and I love it. Its become a hobby. Been thinking on trying a straight razor. Was surprised at the angle. Thank you.

      Phil Howard I wish I could recommend one But I haven’t touched one in years, and I remember it being very unforgiving. That being said I appreciate the appeal of the no maintenance shavette. And if you can master the shavette it will be a cinch to go to straight razors

    Quite a unique second pass 👌 I will try it next time as XTG is where I am struggling most. I usually go ear to nose direction and it feels a bit unatural unlike DE... good to know 😊👍👍

    I use a CJB Kamisori with a feather proguard blade. I use only my right hand on both sides of the face. I do sport a French beard I think it's called... So I shave the cheeks and neck. Thanks for the video. I'm always looking to improve as I still get cuts occasionally. I will specially focus on the neck shave 'soup" motion.. The neck is the hardest part for me and I primarily shave downwards and very rarely upwards. Clean up is done with a Qshave Adjustable (Futur clone) on setting 5.5 and occasionally with a Gillette Fusion proglide power or Schick Hydra 5.

    • @mattdailyshaver3782
      @mattdailyshaver3782 4 года назад

      Jeofrey Pereira never tried a kamisori myself but I’ve always wanted to try it out. I agree the neck is difficult do to the curvature, the hollows, and the Adam’s apple. The idea behind the use of wrist in supination motion on opposite side and in The Godfather motion is to use the arc of your wrist to follow the curve of the neck. It also helps to keep the blade as a little bit shallower angle (flatter). Hope this helps. BTW I also have the Q Shave as well as the Futur. It is a very smooth and aggressive razor - I love it ( but I don’t think I’ve taken it past 3)

    • @jeofreypereira
      @jeofreypereira 4 года назад +1

      @@mattdailyshaver3782 My Qshave is useless below 4. I've gone up to 6 and found that a tad bit too aggressive. 5.5 is aggressive but manageable. 5 is OK! I like a Kamisori / Japanese style razor simply because when I use the shavette I have I struggle looking around the scales and on some areas of the face I was using it like a Kamisori anyways... But I still use the shavette... Can't see myself going into straight razors anytime soon though. There's cost, maintenance and other things to think about and I can't spare that much time right now. I just ordered the Goodfellas' Smile Shibumi Kamisori Shavette (The Original) from WCS a couple of days back and it takes half a DE. Looking forward to that!! I like your videos as I can apply the basics to using the shavette and Kamisori albeit with a little adjustment! :)

    Question, thinking buying a straight razor,, how often do u sharpen or strope razor to keep edge sharp, I know when u buy one they are ready to go but can u explain how often and how to keep blade in working conditions,,
    Thx u

    • @WestCoastShavingChinoHills
      @WestCoastShavingChinoHills  4 года назад +2

      hey there. You need to strop it before each shape. Stropping gets the edge of the blade straight). Honing (sharpening the blade) will vary on how thick your beard is and how good you strop. But its around 70-90 shaves. Our WCS straights come shave ready.

    • @mattdailyshaver3782
      @mattdailyshaver3782 4 года назад

      Good question. Like the comment said, u strop before every shave. Some like to strop after as well but I think that’s overkill. As for honing ymmv. There are lots of factors. If the steel is softer, it may be easier to hone, but will need more frequent honing. If your beard is very coarse, you may need more frequent honing. Mine is like copper wire and I rarely get more than 4 or 5 weeks of shaves from an edge. Which usually means I need a “touch up” or maintenance hone of a few strokes on my Norton 4/8 and then a few strokes on my finisher. Not a full honing progression.

  • @dgrassey

    What finishing stone do you use on your straights; cuticle, Naniwa, Arkansas....?

    Thanks for your tutorial. Silly question: Can one get BBS results XTG with a straight razor? I haven't tried a straight razor, but besides the normal issues with straight razor shaving (learning curve and razor maintenance) XTG on my neck is one of my worst areas. This sequence by straight razor newbie Paul Humphries is perhaps the only straight razor shave I've seen where one manages an XTG pass -- /watch?v=UVyMy5xTes0&t=13m05s

    • @mattdailyshaver3782
      @mattdailyshaver3782 4 года назад

      borbetomagus I will check this out when I get a chance. You can easily get DFS with the across the grain pass ( and no against the grain). For BBS you need a very sharp edge and maybe some buffing (light short repeated strokes).

    What if you get razor burn from this? How long does it last? I got razor burn on my cheek. I’m guessing I had too much pressure because it was not slick at all. I could feel the tugging. Then it turned bright red. On my left side it wiped away cleanly but I had almost no pressure on that side and the razor moved very smoothly across the skin. Also when I got down to my jaw line the toe dug into some loose hanging skin and cut me a couple times. I was so mad lol unbelievable...

    • @mattdailyshaver3782
      @mattdailyshaver3782 3 года назад +1

      Sorry u had a rough shave. Sounds like you may have had an edge that was a little dull. If you are having any tugging , resistance or rough feeling, you should stop and use a razor you know is sharp. Pushing through a bad shave guarantees razor burn and cuts!

    As far as sharpening, seems you guys do this yourselves?( more difficult learning curb ), but for newbies, can you send end to have sharpened? Thx hope used right words ?

    What is the correct method to keeping one’s straight razor sanitized or sanitary ? And how should the razor be stored when not being used ?

    • @animalmgsavage9346
      @animalmgsavage9346 2 года назад

      Best thing is to wipe it clean and dry it after each use. Make sure to fold it closed because a fall from the kitchen sink could break the razor. Strop before each use as well. Hope this helps
