Geo's the man when it comes to shaving videos. Best techniques, quality production and comments. No crap talk. Been shaving with straights for some time and still enjoy and pick up pointers watching the Master!
My dad always used an electric and none of my acquaintances used a straight razor, so I had no one to show me how to do it, including the prep. Fortunately in the internet age there are guys like you showing how it’s done.
wow thats cool. im 18 and i grow hair but i dont shave it yet because i dont know how to. its been 3 years since you wrote that comment do you still use a straight razor?
Your videos saved my face! I've always struggled with ingrown hairs and fierce razor burn, ever since I started shaving. I finally made the leap from cartridge razors to the straight razor. Purchased the boker king cutter straight razor set, along with some proraso sensitive skin pre-shave and soap. Now the ingrown hairs and razor burn are a thing of the past. I just cant believe how well my skin looks. Thanks for your videos, best thing I ever came across on youtube.
This video is awesome and was a HUGE help in getting over that initial learning curve. Thanks Geofatboy. Pay special attention to when he goes the across the grain and against grain passes folks. When he switched hands on the neck area, I tried that on the rest of my face and IT WORKED. My learning curve was gone after trying this very same method. For 30 days, I struggled and couldn't get a good straight razor shave to save my life so I took a 2 month break and then went back to it and shaved with a straight razor for 60 days. I was getting better but not getting good enough results. So I watched this video and now, I'm getting BBS or baby smooth shaves with a straight razor. When I started switching hands, I also used the opposite hand to stretch the skin.
Thank you for one of the most thorough straight shaving videos I've yet seen on the internet. Very clear video with an index at the beginning where to find the first, second, and third passes on the recording, explanations/demonstrations about grip and about which hand is used on parts of the face. Excellent work! Thanks so much for uploading. I'll be watching again and again.
Now I figured out my error....I try to shave everything off with the first cut. That results in an irritated skin allover because I keep scraping. Watching this video I tried the "3 steps" shave and voila....no tomatoeface. Love the "easyness" the way you shave with such a sharp tool. Greets.
Been shaving with a straight for about 20 years, and it never occurred to me to pull on my ear to go across the grain! Every day's a learner. Great vid.
I bought a Dovo Solingen straight razor about a year and a half ago, and tried to shave with it for the first time ever, and started to shake like the barber in High Plains Drifter...so I put it up and never tried to use it until here recently, here lately I've been watching your tutorials (watched about 10 videos before trying to shave with mine) on how to shave with a straight razor, and have since been shaving with mine. Thanks for the know how and the encouragement I needed on how to use a straight razor with confidence. To date I've shaved 4 times with my Dovo, and just do a one pass and finish with a traditional three blade razor, as soon as I get more shave time, I'll be doing the three pass shave. Thanks for the time you put on your videos to teach and encourage novices like myself, you've done a great service to those of us who want to go traditional. God Bless...{['D=

Awesome video...today was actually my first day shaving with a straight razor, and you make this look so easy. I cut my face to hell and back, but I was expecting to do so. Watching this with 8 bleeding knicks from my shavette. I've decided it's not my utter lack of skill, but rather my lack of a badger brush! LOL! Thanks for the video

These videos really got me into straight razor shaving. Been doing it for 6 months but still not confident with against the grain especially on the neck.
I gotta say thanks man! I've been wanting to shave against the grain but couldn't think of the proper way to hold the handle until I saw this. Thanks for the video and answering all the questions I never asked!

Thank you. I have never used a cut throat b4. So it took me about2 hours to get rid of thick growth. Then I switched to a safety razor. Today I used the 1st pass without cream to get the feel of the blade. So I am sticking with the 1st pass with it for now. I've found your video very helpful. I will do each pass in stages I think. Progressing as I get more comfortable.
Love your video's, since I've been watching your videos I am almost exclusively shaving with a straight razor and loving the fact i am having so much fun and having a better shave. You are a rock star and do great tutorials 😄😄👍👍👍👍
Yet another great vid Geo. This is why you're the YT straight razor King! I see this was made a year and a half ago, I gather when you were still had a 15 minute time limit. I’ll be sure to follow the techniques you’ve shown which was something I was looking for. I’m browsing your other videos for great content! Thanks again!
I finally decided to start using a straight razor, I used some of you videos as sort of a crash course to know a little of what I am doing. I am not yet through my first week and the razor bumps from my neck are disappearing and the skin on my face just seems cleaner. So in short, thanks man! I look forward to shaving every day. I have been using the regular Proraso from the tube with a badger brush, just a phenomenal feel. Thanks again man.
Geo, Thanks for taking the time to produce these videos. Funny but sometimes it's the littlest things that catch you attention and make a difference in one's shave. The part about blowing air in the cheek as you go XTG made it easier to get that part of my face smooth.

Very good video; one of the best on learning to shave with a straight-razor. I am yet to try my first straight-razor shave; I shall study this a few more time before giving it a go! Thank you again.
thanks for all the great videos. First shave with a straight razor yesterday.Finish under 15min with no major cuts. Will keep going with wet shaving. Will try the 3 way pass next.Waiting for my beard to grow....
attempted my 1st shave ever with this exact razor and just did the cheeks and managed to NOT cut myself! It's gonna take awhile but i cannot wait till i become adept at it. it is going to be so much fun but also expensive as i just ordered a new super badger by simpson but ya gotta go with the best thanks Geo you vids are exceptional
wow, I was looking for a review on the edelwiess originally, I'm glad I stumbled onto your channel. I just started straight razor shaving about 2 weeks ago, and I'm still in the process of learning. Thanks for the informative video.
Nice job. I'm not that picky. Right handed. Lots of water. Good lather. And MOST IN PORT A SHRAP RAZOR!!!! I'm still new but I'm really getting better!! Love it!! A real luxury!!!
When I started the 1st pass with shaving cream it was not good for me. I cut myself loads with cream. But, I have persisted. I now have the feel of the blade now on the 1st pass without cream. So have started to apply shaving cream. My shave went from an hour, with cuts, to 15 mins without cuts. Will now try the second pass. You video for technique is very helpful.
I really appreciate your posting this video. I am trying to decide between straight razor or safety razor. I can't use electric - breaks me out every time. I am tired of spending so much on replacement cartridges. I also am a survivalist and if you get a good straight razor, you'll never need to buy another blade/cartridge, etc. Good quality video, too! Thank you again.
I've got the same problem. I find that making light crescent motions helps, but you've got to be VERY careful. Looking straight up also helps, but takes a lot of practice.
CHOICE 👌 Shave Geo. I myself just finished doing a "Two Pass" shave with my Original Mühle R~41 with a Feather blade. Accompanied with Proraso Green Shaving Cream, applied with my Tweezerman Brush. Used my Shave Nation Alum Block, rinsed with icey cold water, and topped off with Fine Snake Bite After Shave. Ohhhh.... Baby that's spicy ! Wink Wink 😉 Keep On Shavin'... I haven't dry shaved for years, but as I haven't used a cut throat b4, so I felt it essential to get the feel of the blade. Negotiating between the chin and the neck was a little tricky. Skin felt raw afterwards as usual, but, I will stick with it until I feel confident.
Your doin great stuff geo! Especially for guys who are just starting it like me, pretty intimidating at first but just such a classy old fashioned closest shave I'm gonna stick with it!
How much a razor like this will last? I want for a long time to buy one, and I wish a good one. But I am not sure about the invest on it, because I don't know how time will last.
Thanks for the great videos. I'm still waiting for my Dovo to come in the mail. Can't wait to join the club! Your videos have definitely given me the tips & advice I need to start out as a noob.
Dude solid!! Thanks! Just got comfortable with the the first pass but against the grain has been getting me. I appreciate the showing of different ways to handle the blade. “The fools pass”😂
great vid geo, could you suggest a straight razor 4 someone just starting out into the world of bad-ass shaving, ive never used a straight razor yet and im looking to buy one to get me started, does difference between them just come down to look preference at the end of the day, cheers for any suggestions.
When you shave, and you clean the razor with water from the cream and grain,do you wipe the blade with a towel before continuing,or do you continue with the blade wet??!?!
Great video, I like your method. What is the reason you went to straight razor? I did because modern razors get so clogged with shaving cream it's ridiculous 😒
Would you recommend a straight razor for someone with very sensitive skin. Normally after i shave i breakout under my chin and it becomes extremely sensitive.
That was a good instruction. Do you not have issues with razor burn though? Also, do you use cold water all the way through? On one tutorial, the man did. WOW!!
I am new to straight razors and I just watched a video that said that rinsing your blade in water is a big no-no. They said that not only are you risking hitting the edge on the side of the sink but also that water is not good for the metal of the blade under any circumstances and should be avoided.
Absolutely don't bang it on the sink or faucet, that will kill the blade. I dry it thoroughly after use and have never had a problem with one because of water.
Have been using a 5/8 full hollow ground for around three months now.Almost regardless of how many passses in which direction (With the grain, across the grain or against the grain) or at which angle (Between 10 and 40 degrees, at which point the blade tries to bite) I cannot get an acceptable shave. Any pointer, or are two blade plastic disposables just superior?
Good video. Hard to find some one who shows how to do it against the grain. I just started and can say that pulling the skin and shaving in the opposite direction from where you pulled is the key to a close shave and less skin irritation. I still think you need to go against the grain to get a baby smooth shave though. After shave really helps with the skin irritation as well (alcohol free).
Hi Geo, I just bought myself a Boker Edelweiss today and on my first str8 razor shave, the blade tugs and pulls on my hairs on my 1st pass. The vendor claims he has professionally honed and sharpened it before sending to me. So i'm not sure if its my technique, angle of shave, or the vendor is lying. I am already using extreme caution to shave (feather weight pressure or literally no pressure when shaving, lighter than what I usually apply during DE shaving)
Dear geofatboy, you indeed has been an inspiration... I actually have tried shaving with straight razors but it seems I must have lot of practice before I get used to of it, I am trying to be careful but it really clogs a lot, anyways to get rig of clogging of straight razor on face?
@@geofatboy sorry I actually used a wrong word... Not a clogging but I could't afford to shave further down from my chick and due to less water I used the razor wasn't moving due to thick very thick leather... And I was bit afraid to shave any further by applying more pressure and just by keep going through! Will try next time properly

Very instructive and helpful. Really appreciate your helpful spirit. Best wishes.
There's a good chance it will outlive you! That's long enough I think.
Thanks for the great videos. I'm still waiting for my Dovo to come in the mail. Can't wait to join the club! Your videos have definitely given me the tips & advice I need to start out as a noob.
Just picked up my first straight razor. Your video was a great guide. I faired ok but definitely need more practice.
straight razors make a beautiful sound while shaving.
I have a vintage 5/8” Jassiano& Co, by Solingen Germany. looks similar to the razor in this video. I had been trying to know what year was made.
Hi, need your help. I get a very thin shiny on the edge of the bevelled after honing the stright razor. is this good or bad.?
Man this guy makes it look easy.
First off nice video. Secondly, on the ATG pass it looks like the blade is positioned at 90 degrees. Is that correct?
I am still learning sir, I am scared of cutting . Well I have had minor cuts though. Should I continue or drop the Idea of using a straight razer
Great video, I like your method. What is the reason you went to straight razor? I did because modern razors get so clogged with shaving cream it's ridiculous 😒
I did it because it's fun and challenging and requires skill and concentration. And-It's the best shave ever!
Great Video! I have watched this video probably 20 times!
Do you shave everyday? Using three passes and do you feel any irritation if you do it everyday ?
Would you recommend a straight razor for someone with very sensitive skin. Normally after i shave i breakout under my chin and it becomes extremely sensitive.
The hair on my neck seems to grow sideways (left to right) not up and down. How can I shave with and against the grain with a straight razor?
That was a good instruction. Do you not have issues with razor burn though? Also, do you use cold water all the way through? On one tutorial, the man did. WOW!!
Was that man me? ruclips.net/video/d-z07wbmdOg/видео.html

On the third pass I noticed that you could still hear the distinctive scrape of hair being cut. Does that mean you didn't quite achieve BBSS?
Very helpful, many thanks!
Dear geofatboy, you indeed has been an inspiration... I actually have tried shaving with straight razors but it seems I must have lot of practice before I get used to of it, I am trying to be careful but it really clogs a lot, anyways to get rig of clogging of straight razor on face?
Why is it clogging? Its just a flat blade. It rinses off easily!
How's your water pressure?
@@geofatboy sorry I actually used a wrong word... Not a clogging but I could't afford to shave further down from my chick and due to less water I used the razor wasn't moving due to thick very thick leather... And I was bit afraid to shave any further by applying more pressure and just by keep going through! Will try next time properly
