Ray wasn't teaching her to play the violin, but how to bring the music to life though her violin. She is so fortunate to spend time with a true virtuoso who can bring this out. He can see that she can play the notes; but now he is taking her to the next level. I've followed her for a few years, but this is the first time I've commented.

I've been following her for several years. Like you said, she knows the notes. To express the feeling the composer wrote in the music, is the next step!
Putting myself in the role of a music critic, just now, Karolina wasn't capable of understanding that level of intensity, here (at this time).
She's still quite young.
The "angst" that Ray Chen was trying to teach Karolina to express, through her music, is "foreign", to her.
(And, why should she already be familiar with it? she has lived a sheltered...but no doubt "supportive"...life, up to this point, in her 15 years on the planet.)
An afterthought:
I have already listened to her Mendelssohn performance. She "is" a virtuoso, to be sure!
Karolina will become a "seasoned veteran" (of this genre) with the passage of time.
No doubt. 🎉
Chen is a good teacher: he certainly knows how to "stretch" other performers-- to reach higher.
Kudos, to him.
Listening to a lot of recordings will be helpful, together with an almost obsessed curiosity about what's actually happening.
Ray Chen is absolutely correct. A musician can be technically perfect in the notes they’re playing, but they need to be able to play with emotion as well. That can be the difference between being good and being great.

So the master musician is the master dramatist, the gifted storyteller sweeping you through all of life's emotions. What a beautiful teacher he is.
This masterclass was so successful. I am so impressed with both of them. Ray Chen is truly the most expressive violinist in the world. You can feel that here too. Sometimes you can't believe how many nuances can be heard.
Karolina plays her pieces on the street with her strength.
Here in the classical area she can still learn a lot from Ray.

Mr. Chen is just unbelievable. He makes me want to bust with emotion when he plays There is so much life and raw emotion when he plays, it is so strong that the audience gets swept up and starts to FEEL what he feels through his playing. You are so lucky to have him. You are worth it. Embrace what he is teaching you. You are turning into an artist right in front of our eyes, but grasp on emotionally what he is trying to convey.

What a wonderful Master Class and what a star pupil, I've played it through a few times and noticed how Karolina responded, getting more and more attentive as the class progressed and she understood what Ray Chen was getting at and responded by being more attentive.... Brilliant !!!

Very very fortunate to spend time with a violinist and person of Ray Chen’s talent, knowledge, professionalism and prestige is WOW! His insight of how to transfer feelings to sound. How to play and project sound to the audience furthest away from the stage and demonstrate enthusiasm and insight for each note played. What she gained from this is priceless. I’m not a violinist but still gained knowledge from listening to him.
This is an absolutely beautiful and amazing master class. Thank God for people like Ray Chen who are extremely gifted and studied who are willing to share skills and knowledge with others to help hone their skills and presentation. I was in the viola section for your November Mendelsohn performance. Having experienced playing in Mendelsohn concerto performances many times before, it was a great pleasure to experience this one and to have the opportunity to support your performance. The orchestra and particularly the conductor seemed fully pleased with your performance. While your performance this time already seemed outstanding to us compared to other performances we have played in, I hope you have more opportunities to perform and continue to perfect this concerto in bigger halls and/or with other orchestras.

I love listening to Karolina play classical music. Her street performances don't call for this discipline. This is a priceless lesson. You can easily hear what he's teaching her. So subtle but very noticeable. Karolina is a brilliant student. She will be a master playing in packed halls very soon. She brings tears.

Karolina's violin playing skills are very impressive as they are. But Ray's playing clearly demonstrates that she has a lot to learn to get closer to his phenomenal level, if ever.
This is the first time I understand that musician playing instruments is a performing art. Thanks to Ray and Karolina.
Ray is so wonderful. Renting an entire place just for a masterclass. And karolina is such a good student. Even though most of the time the teacher is the issue when people struggle in something, the student also plays a key role and In this case there's both, an awesome student with an awesome teacher, the key to success. I feel that Mr Chen has a vast maturity towards the music which he plays and shares, he tried imparting this to Karolina, a great thing to learn. Music is more than notes.

It’s so cute you got dressed for Ray. Ray is such a nice guy too. Love the enthusiasm. Dad seems cool as well. Ray is covering a lot of ground here. Cool thing is you can watch the video again and again and then work on each part. DONT worry that Ray has many suggestions, he is only meeting with you because you deserve his time. I love that Ray is always working with kids and sharing his knowledge with these young talented people.
This training from Ray Chen will probably get you into the best music school, the same one he got into. He had to audition twice.

I can't believe how enjoyable this was to watch - all the subtleties that you otherwise might miss!
When you dance in the streets and you are playing your violin, you use your dance, your gracefulness,and you twirls to connect with your audience. When you are performing in a hall, you use the hall, the acoustics, your expressions, your emotions, to connect with your audience. Show the audience what this music evokes out of you. Give the music LIFE and movement. Anyone can play the notes, play to audience and make them laugh, cry, or be excited WITH you. You want them to sit at the edge of their seat anticipating what you make them FEEL. You play BEAUTIFULLY.
I would make a recording of yourself and video yourself dancing to it so you can It make match your playing. Don't be afraid to move and dance. Your audience will enjoy it WITH you. 🎶🎵🎶❤

Brilliant video. Karolina, you have the technical "chops" to play just about any piece of music...this video proves that. Listen and learn and then feel the music as you play and you will be great. You are still young, but with time and practice practice practice, you will get it.
I am so impressed with Ray Chen. Another one of my violin heroes. I'm a beginner with the violin and I have no clue how they play the notes so cleanly, let alone have it memorized. The emotion is the last layer to overcome....I have enough trouble with the notes!
