I really, really like the full team (or at least multi-pokemon) gimmick runs, they're so much more unique and fun than the single pokemon runs. Not that I don't love the single pokemon runs, but the variety is very much appreciated.

I sure do wonder what fossil he took. Also appreciate that he said he could use held items, despite it being gen 1 and not having any of those.
He is obviously hacking, secret tech to have held items in Gen1 is OP.
So in yellow red and blue for the GB the pokemon actually held items you just couldn't do anything about it that's why pikachu never evolves he is holding an everstone keeping him pikachu forever never to be raichu if you trade pikachu you can take it off and send it back
@@TheYamitaven I think at some point I played coliseum and moved pokemon around through that and my machsmp had a piece of brick or something like that, so them secretly having items is entirely possible I guess..
@@tylerzwickl2811 I promise they did the option to actually give and take items from pokemon didnt start till gold silver and crystal if I'm not mistaken exp all/exp share same thing but one was given to pokemon the other was carried in the bag
@@TheYamitaven I believe you. I just had one Gameboy and my n64 controller, so I used stadium as pokemon bank to move my mons from red to silver. I out way more time into silver than I ever did red or anything gen 3
I love how Tentacool is one of the most annoying Pokemon ever when it's in the wild, but if you evolve one it's an absolute monster. Same with Zubat when it becomes a Crobat.
In Gen 1 it is good because of no special attack and special defense but not in later generations high speed and high special defense is terrible if its special attack is good it will be awesome
@@_________________________772 It's still very good in later gens, fast, very specially bulky, good typing, and does good damage. It's special attack isn't fantastic but it reliably 2 shots most mons neutrally and one shots with se stab attacks.

Tentacruel's sprite in this game is something else, I love it.
It looks like it's strangling itself.
Honestly, the challenge runs where you use multiple Pokemon are probably my favorites of what you do. Whether it's this, the Smeargle team run last week, the no new moves runs, or just any runs where there's more than one Pokemon. I'm not saying the one Pokemon runs are bad, these runs just end up being more interesting for me for whatever reason.
I feel like it's diversity. With one Pokemon challenges, you just gotta level up against type disadvantages/ better pokemon until you can survive if you hit a roadblocks. With multi Pokemon runs you can try different moves, catching other pokemon or using a pokemon as a status inflicting meat shield, so you have more options.

Hey Mah-Dry-Bread, I know its a weird question but while you were in mt moon there are two fossils, the helix and dome. Which fossil did you pick? I know its not apart of the run but honestly I’m completely baffled that you wouldnt have added it to your video. maybe you’re just trying to get people like me to make a comment for the youtube algorithm. We may never know
Let's do some deductive reasoning here. So we have a 50/50 chance getting it right with 0 help. Dome fossil is possible since he's always finding unique ways to beat these challenges but the Helix fossil gives you the best Pokemon ever and is an auto win but that would be boring in a challenge. Hmmm harder than I thought to guess.
He didn't say what fossil he got, but he got the helix fossil, cause he said he was going to use Tentacruel instead of the Omastar he revived, hence the Helix fossil

I loved in the first Pokemon Stadium where if you had a Doduo or Dodrio and they used Fly it just showed them running in midair lol
It is so weird seeing an actual full team with normal levels of fully evolved pokemon.

People complain about HMs but I never minded having to carry any except Cut and Rock Smash. 80+ power Normal and Water moves are nothing to sneeze at
Actually, one of my earliest memories of Pokemon was helping my friend beat the Elite 4 with his Empoleon who knew nothing but HM moves. Was hard as balls, but surprisingly not impossible

Your whole argument about the comparing cut, fly and dig was so brilliant that I had to just had to like the video right away. It's easy to forget how some of these make sense at all if we ignore pure game aspects. By same logic we could also wonder why a tackle from high angle (fly) is a lot more effective against grass types compared to just a normal tackle.

Sorry to ruin it for you, but Fly's Japanese name can also be translated as "Sky Jump," so it's more likely that they just jump into the air and land at the chosen destination. Still a hilarious mental image, but not anywhere near as ridiculous.

I dont watch you videos often but the fact that I picked up on the fossil joke shows just how engrained in your channel it is lmao
I really liked this video, but I would still like to see the more extreme version of this challenge where you only use Krabby and its HM moves for the entire game. Use the universal Pokémon randomiser to replace Squirtle with a Krabby that only knows Cut to start. From there, you can only teach it Strength and Surf. What makes this interesting is that you can theoretically solo the game with just one Pokémon. I don't know if it will be possible though.

I still want to see a Gen 4 run with only Sableye. Bonus points if you keep Stall as your ability!

I’d love to see this on other gens in the future. Gen 4 sounds particularly interesting with the Physical Special split with Waterfall and Surf and Rock Climb was Strength but with a flinch chance.
When you went through Mount moon you probably referred to the rare candy you can find because that's not really worthy talking about. But the more important question would be which fossil did the super nerd at the end of the tunnel pick

Before watching the vid: It is indeed possible, but the main hurdle is using only struggle until you get Cut at the SS Anne. I hypothesized purposely losing the first rival fight against Blue before immediately heading to Viridian Forest to catch as many Metapod and Kakuna as you can, using up all of their Hardens on opposing Metapod and Kakuna, using Struggle on wild Pokemon to level up, and repeating the process until you can beat all the trainers with just Struggle until you reach the Nugget Bridge where you can find more Metapod and Kakuna. Repeating the process again until you can get access to the Daycare and the Old Rod, and continuing to train until you can beat Blue on the SS Anne, after which you get Cut. Once you have Cut, the rest of the game is just getting all the HMs, finding solid Pokemon to learn them, and leveling up until you can beat the E4 and Champion.
One minute and 15 seconds into the video: Or I guess just skip all the hard stuff and not start the challenge until you actually GET Cut. Did all of the theory crafting for nothing I suppose.
Pre-Run prediction, but honestly I think this challenge, while maybe a bit trivial, should actually be somewhat easy. Pick the water starter for stab surf, and strength + fly are both pretty strong moves. Given there are no pokemon restrictions, each one of these moves will have stab and are versatile enough that you will have at least a regularly effective move on every pokemon. Possibly the biggest challenge will be the periods of time between learning the HM moves.

I didnt read far enough to check and see if anyone else said this, but I learned it from a RUclips video in which a couple of people pit all of the R/B AI trainers against one another to rank who would be the strongest. But in the actual code of the game, Lorelei's Dewgong is programmed to use Rest on the second turn, sometimes regardless of its HP. It will also sometimes use Rest because it is a "Psychic" type move, like when you were talking about Dragonite using Barrier against Nidoking. Love the videos MDB!
I never knew Tentacruel and Kingler has smiley faces on their backsprites
When you do the run in gen 2, be sure to get a Goldeen learns Waterfall at level 38, and Seaking at level 41, so it'll be a good way to get your hands on a pokemon through fishing that'll have waterfall a ways before you'll have the TM for it. Although, honestly, considering gen 2 and the level curve you might end up getting waterfall physically before that point anyways.

Pre-watch predicition: this is gonna be really frustrating when you only have cut, but once you get strength, surf, and fly, it will be exceptionally easy to win
predicted perfectly, although that isn't really an accomplishment. people often say hm moves are awful, but surf, fly, and strength are pretty good overall. they're almost never the best moves of their type, but they're almost always good

I really liked this challenge.
Yes it did feel easier, but at the same time this feels more keeping in the spirit of pokemon (catching, raising and battling with a team of different pokemon)
You also didn’t just overlevel to overcome so this is always more impressive.

This is actually an awesome idea for a run; all those times Pokémon using HMs outside of battle was an exception to the rule … now HMs ARE the rules.

I tried this is platinum so if it's something you're planning for every gen, you may want to do diamond or pearl instead of platinum. Unless I missed something, the only hms you can get before the ghost gym are rock smash and cut. When I did it, I decided to allow myself to use struggle for ghosts. Im not sure whether diamond and pearl are possible with only hms.
They are you get fly after veilstone city and hearthome is the 5th badge in DP
I think so... I'm pretty sure (can) you go to Celestic Town before doing the ghost gym, which is where you get surf
The main reason I'm not sure about diamond and pearl is because in platinum I ran onto a trainer with a ghost pokemon (I think driftloon) before veilstone, I'm not sure if you'd run into them or another mandatory trainer in the other two
@@theepiczelda2331 nope you need the secretpotion for that, which is given to you by Cynthia after the 5th gym, by which you'll have to be able to beat ghosts
@@janwillemdewaard9032 Nah, you get the secret potion in DP after the Pastoria gym (which is fourth) and before Hearthome gym as that is the 5th gym.

Pre-premire thought, I'm hoping this is gonna be a Mew run, as that'll be the most feasible way to do this challenge using only one pokemon. But my prediction is that it's more likely going to be a normal team of pokemon that can learn HM moves. Still, the idea of "using the obligatory HM pokemon every single-pokemon challenge typically needs" is something I'd been hoping to see, even if "literally only one pokemon, no HM pokemon" would be more amusing.
There are, if I'm correct, 6 HMs in this run...
@@musicalsystem927 There are 5 HM moves in 1st gen. In rough order, Cut, Flash, Fly, Surf, Strength. Of those, Flash is technically optional to progress if you can eyeball Rock Tunnel well enough and/or have it memorized, while Fly is a massive help for QoL but otherwise not needed for progression.
So a Mew-only run could be done with Cut, Fly, Surf and Strength if one was willing to go through Rock Tunnel without Flash, having the advantage of a full roster of damaging moves (albeit with not that great type coverage).

An interesting idea for a challenge would be gen 5 with only deerling. It’s about as strong as a first form starter.
Should have gotten a Tauros for stab Strength with awesome crit chance.

I feel like the fact that you have to get through like, 15% of the game before this challenge has even begun makes it kind of a weird idea for a run.
he literally could've hacked Cut onto his starter, and hacked the cascade badge into his items in order to do the whole game with only HMs... I feel cheated with this run. I mean people hack in different starters for challenges, so why not hack a move onto your starter and get the badge from the start? (yet still have to defeat Misty anyway)

Is it really necessary to get cut "legit" for challenges like this? You could either hack cut over tackle, or just run two emulator instances, trade, teach cut, and trade back. I really think this challenge was kind of lessened without needing to scrape by the extreme early game with only cut.
MDB generally thinks challenges are lessened by cheating in just about any form.

@@Junkman374 Yeah, but if he's willing to 'cheat' to start with a non starter, is it really that much to ALSO cheat in a move for these move challenges?
I’d be very curious what you consider an “exploit.” You state knowing that Dragonite won’t go for anything but useless power up moves due to their psychic typing against Nidoking so you sent Nido out to take down Dragonite. Couldn’t that technically be considered an Exploit? I don’t mind one way or the other, but since you’re not only using one Pokémon I thought you may try to take it down with a different mon before resorting to the King. This was fun. Would love to see more.
It's the game playing as intended. It's an oversight more than an exoloit.
An exploit would be like using the poke doll to skip needing the sylph scope. It's not a glitch, but it does use the games mechanics not as intended to progress without completing necessary steps.
Take a look at LowestPercent's video on Gen 1. It's actually insanely difficult to avoid any beneficial bug for a full playthrough.

Well he also overleveled his Venusaur before getting cut, it was a good 6-7 levels higher than it needed to be, so talking about minimum battles at the start was quite misleading at best, a lie at worst, since he clearly was grinding levels beforehand. One could argue that over leveling before picking up any HM’s is also an ‘exploit’.

I don't watch you every week, I watch you 2 or 3 times every night. (More like listen though) I have trouble sleeping and stay awake for more than 3 hours most nights, so I listen to you when I can't sleep.
I just watched a J.J. McCullough video on how deviation from what is expected can be unsettling, and then Mah Dry Bread finally doesn't do the fossil bit in his video. J.J.'s point was very much proven right by that.

I’m not as good as you, but watching you encouraged me to make a bug only run in sapphire, which I did, and for those asking, yes I did choose the claw fossil, and armaldo was the mvp.
Edit: it’s really entertaining when watching you do it, it’s really brutal when I actually tried to do it, but after I’m done, it feels like an accomplishment. It made me feel 10x better about my ability, I recommend for people to try these out if you have the time, and try to have fun more than misery.
