    It's wild to me that, as the hobby's progressed over the years and the models have become more advanced, Kitbashing seems to have become *_less_* common in the general playerbase and gets seen as some lost art only really advanced modellers should attempt? It feels like the models at some point stopped being materials for you to build out of and became pieces of art you need to put together "right". I just wanna take these kids by the hand like you're doing and go "It's your model champ, you can give him a cool head and a sword if you want to!"

    • @WilhelmScreamer
      @WilhelmScreamer Год назад +2

      @@Blacknight8850 I dont think its seen in the same way. The mindset of kitbashing has this aspect of working against the model to get a result. While a bespoke new bit is made to be painless.
      The effort of sculpting the igital asset is not something I want to dismiss, but it is a different experience.

      @@WilhelmScreamer If you're altering the base model in any way you're still kitbashing.
      I think the main reason you get fewer conversions nowadays is because big companies like GW actively discourage it through model and rules design and what they show in their marketing. In the past it was normal to see a kitbash even in professional photos, and GW put out how-tos on how to kitbash. The kits were easily swappable - the heads, arms, torsos and legs were often interchangeable between kits and even ranges. You could also arm your units with a wide range of weapons from the codex/army book. Nowadays their models are much more monopose and they have specific load-outs in the rules so it really discourages conversions.

    Amongst my hobby friends, I'm known as "the guy who never met a model he couldn't make better" 🤣
    I kitbash and customize EVERYTHING, most of my Custodes army is kitbashed and customized in some way or another, one of my favorites is a custom Darth Maul inspired double sided sword blade champion
    -Custodian guard body
    -x2 Custodes swords pinned together at the hilts
    -custodian guard captain cape
    -robes from allarus terminator
    -some dangly bits from the vexilla
    -Hooded head from the Deathwing Terminators kit (the only part that isn't from a Custodes kit)

    I literally did a Kitbash today. It’s a small one, but I kitbashed my Questor Soulsworn Chaplain by cutting the Skull helmets face off then cutting a skull from the Citadel Skulls box in half then glued the face on. I cut the forehead off the skull off as the skull doesn’t quite fit the Chaplain’s Silhouette. However, as I’m currently out of Green Stuff, I used Blu Tack to fill out the “masks” forehead. No sculpting experience at all. 😅 I really just wanted to see how it looked. Proper Grimdark is the answer.

    Kitbashing looks easy enough when you do it but I think many people are put off from starting by the price. A head-swap is easy but beginners often don't have an extensive bits box. To copy this model I would need to buy a box of Vindictors and buy a whole box of Sisters of Battle for the one spare head. As you progress in the hobby you find ways around it (more spare bits over time, bits sharing with friends or at a club, 3d printed extras, lucky Ebay find) but it's a bit daunting to start with. Scratch building is somehow an easier entry point in a lot of circumstances, kitchen foil and cotton thread for banners were where I started. There's also the question of conversions being 'legal' in gaming, there's always someone willing to gate-keep the hobby.

    While the podcasts can be fun to follow along with, it does get a bit tedious when so many content creators just follow the pipeline to Podcasts as their main content.
    Before anyone comments, I understand that they have a higher return on investment of time to content and is why they are so desirable as content.

      Our content is often dictated by availability of guests and we have admittedly had a few bunched together of late but it’s been unavoidable. Also with the demands of Pat’s day job (especially through the summer) it makes the time consuming filming and editing of a painting video, just that bit harder to achieve as opposed to being a financial decision.
