an old saying is: the laws in Russia are strict, but Moscow is far away.
This means that most laws in Russia are ignored and noone cares. Only if you anger the wrong person suddenly the otherwise ignored laws will be applied and than you become the deterring example for others.

I got arrested in the USA for putting a sign in my car window with a friend that broke several of the laws you mentioned in one fell swoop. Since, there are no laws strictly forbidding mentioning certain things in public especially if it's written down (like on a T-shirt or sticker on the car) the police decided to charge me with pornography zoning law violations and I got dragged through court for several years, had to pay thousands of dollars for lawyers and bail until finally a judge saw the actual details of the case and basically told the police to STFU in the court room, nicknamed me "Picasso" and told me "you know son, I've never, ever seen someone push the envelope like this in my entire life, and I'm sympathetic to your side because they're misusing a law because you upset their sensibilities about something else. These signs were meant to incite anger and not prurient interest." 😈 They let me go, but it still cost me a lot of money and time. So, just a warning to anyone wanting to visit the USA, they'll find a way to make life hellish for you here, too, if you continually "push the envelope." I had to keep hiring new lawyers, because they'd keep quitting, because they didn't know how to handle the case anymore. I think that case I had to go through 4 lawyers. Also, they kept pushing the case to the bottom of the docket until no one was left in the court at the end of the day. So, every time I thought "great this nonsense will finally get tossed today by a sensible judge" the court would run out of time and reschedule it again. The police knew what they were doing trying to punish me for getting them angry. They're lucky I wasn't having a bad spell that day they arrested us for it. They got really angry because I kept laughing at them, too, especially when they kept threatening to kick the sh!+ out of us two knuckle heads as my friend (RIP) had prior counts of assault and battery on police. When they looked up his record they stopped threatening us. 😂

The traffic fines might be a bit rough in Finland...light speeding is below 200 eur, wrong parking 60-70 euros, but for bigger violations ( +20 kmh over limits)its all related to Your salary. Biggest confirmed speeding ticket believe is 170000 eur(driving 80kmh on 40 restriction) by a rather wealthy guy:) I got 1500 eur for driwing 103 on 80 limited area, that was 15 years ago....now more careful.

As far as you have speeding fines automated with a camera you don't need it to be expensive. Nobody wants to pay 3 times every day. Even if it is as low as 5$.
Of course people used to remember or share on map locations of that cameras, but it really helps a lot. 20 years ago we had much more speeding.

Thank you for the insight into Russian life. I just watched your10 December video about food prices. There I was surprised that prices are not greatly different from the stores I visit. Now that I learn a beginning reporter earned only $150/month, I feel richly blessed.
When I traveled in Russia in 1997, my tour guide was a full professor of Chemistry at University. She earned more money from her side job. It seems amazing that someone with a Masters degree needs to have a RUclips channel. Selfishly, I'm glad to learn more about the life of a normal Russian who isn't a Muscovite.

Thank you for this interesting video Natasha. Well done for getting your masters degree. I hope it will help you in your career. Every country has its problems. Here in the UK we have to be careful what we say, especially online. If someone expresses an opinion against a religious or ethnic minority, that can be taken as encouraging people to attack them. People can end up in prison for years for that now. Voltaire said, 'I don't agree with what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it.' That's what I was taught at school in the '70s. But such tolerance and freedom of thought is more discouraged now.

    Thank you Natacha.
Inflation in Russia has accelerated again after the ruble collapsed to the lowest values of the first weeks of the war, according to Rosstat data published on Wednesday, 04-12-2024
During the week of November 26 - December 2, the consumer price index increased by 0.5%, and annual inflation accelerated to 9.07, its highest level since February 2023. The weekly inflationary surge was one of the strongest in the last two years: prices rose more only in the first week of July (by 0.77%), when the authorities sharply indexed tariffs.
Monthly inflation in November compared to October was 1.5% - and this is the highest value for this month in the last 10 years, said Egor Susin, General Director of GPB Private Banking. In terms of annual rates, this gives an inflation of 14.5%, he estimates.
The inflationary picture is a complete disaster," write MMI analysts. The epicenter of the inflationary fire remains the grocery departments of supermarkets, where prices have risen by tens of percent and continue to rise. According to Rosstat, potatoes have shuddered by 81% since the beginning of the year, onions - by 40%, cabbage - by 34%, milk, sour cream and apples - by 17%. The rise in the price of butter, a record since 2007, accelerated to 33%, lamb - up to 22%, bread - exceeded 13%.
And this is not just the beginning: the fall of the ruble inevitably leads to an increase in the cost of imported goods and products, in which the share of imported components is significant, warns Natalia Milchakova, senior analyst at Freedom Finance. Clothing and footwear, smartphones, consumer electronics, as well as that vegetables, fruits, confectionery, fruit juices and semi-finished products will increase in price.
A monetary policy shock may be needed to stop the inflationary spiral from unwinding," MMI analysts write. The central bank could raise its key interest rate to 25%, the level at which Vladimir Putin began his first presidential term in 2000, Bloomberg Economics economist Alexander Isakov said. "The central bank is facing a dilemma," he said. "Either raise rates even higher, risking a recession in the economy, or simply accept higher inflationary pressures." The central bank, according to Isakov, will choose the former.
After raising the rate eight times in a row, the regulator has raised it to 21% - the highest in 20 years. But inflation has not yet started to slow this year, "will be higher" than last year, Central Bank Chairwoman Elvira Nabiullina acknowledged on Wednesday.
is accelerated by the state of the labor market, where it has a record shortage of personnel in history, as well as sanctions that impose restrictions on imports, on the supply of goods, listed economists Nabiullina. by Reuters predict that at the December meeting, the central bank rate could be raised to 23%, and the participants in the interbank money market could continue to grow up to 25% in February.

The biggest fine that was shocking was reentering Canada even if not positive for covid. Failing to comply can result in a fine of up to $750,000 or imprisonment for six months. Since it is a constitutional right to enter leave or remain in Canada for Canadians this felt like overreach. I had three negative tests and I still was kept in quarentine for two weeks AND they tried to fine me like $4500, I successfully defended against it though, thankfully. AND I was told to go to the border to check if I can enter by health officials which immediately resulted in the forced quarantine because they wouldn't check if my place of quarantine was consensual and wanted proof but wouldn't obtain it because they didn't want to use government resources to verify I was intending to break the law, which I wasn't. This was singlehandedly the most unreasonable experience I have ever had with government and I've been frame up before by police and I have numerous false reports written by government officials, and other abuses, but this one has one most outrageous. Even more than forcing meat diets on a vegan in custody. Although forced confinement and drugings for revenge is beyond outrageous, but that wasn't a fine.

@ Pronouns, for a start. They belong to the speaker. They do not belong to the spoken about. Among other important linguistic functions, pronouns permit fundamental, detailed, nuanced discussion and communication.
Inverting that basic principle alone has enormous ramifications when, in the workplace for example, employees MUST not only state their pronouns but also use individualized language systems for each coworker or face discipline.
      English
      Subject pronouns are I/we, you/you, he/she/it/they
      Object pronouns are me/us, you/you, him/her/them
There is nothing compassionate about obliterating that one piece of English - a language that is hard enough already.
Some people face discipline, dismissal, and even risk facing charges of human rights violations in some Western countries today if they refuse to play along.
Many students in post secondary institutions and members of professional associations commonly receive long lists of vocabulary that must be avoided and vocabulary that must be used lest they face punitive measures.
These are two samples from the tip of the proverbial iceberg of compelled speech. It’s insidious but ubiquitous in the English speaking West.

I'm not sure how it is in Russia but many of the best UK journalists started at local papers, many direct from school (high school) and worked their way up to national papers. This was how it was. I sense like everything else these days you probably have to have come through university which is a shame.

She decided to come visit me in Spain, where I'm living. In Moscow, going to the airport, she bought from some marketplace two canes of black caviar, wanting to surprise me. At the airport, they arrested her for those canes, and after a minimal trail, they condemned her for paying 1000000 rubles in a maximum of 14 able days, and if she fails to pay the fine, she must go to prison for two years. Of course, she wasn't relieved for the arrest from that moment on, so she hasn't the possibility to go and find the money for the fine. Now she is in prison. From the moment she was arrested, I don't know anything about her. Already passed almost two months from that moment.

I really must congratulate you on your Master's degree Natasha.
Such an achievement must have represented a great deal of work, but you persevered. I hope it opens career doors for you as long as you write in modes sanctioned by the government.
I notice that the fines and incarceration threats you mentioned were associated with people having different views to those of the Regime or an organized religion.
Personally I think that trying to suppress opinions like this is disgraceful, but characteristic of authoritarian regimes. Hitler tried it too. Despite decades of attempts to suppress religion by the Soviets, once the USSR collapsed it immediately sprang back to life. All they had done was to force it underground.
Thanks again, take care and stay safe.

@@MsMelkus That was what I wondered too. After looking into it, there seems to a split within Russian/Ukranian Orthodox: over the justness of the war. By my memory, they said this happened in some of the first places that involved fighting in Ukraine, e.g. Donbas, which is why they fled to U.S.A. I asked which military attacked and closed the churches? The interpreter told me it was Russian military. It may be going both ways. There is not much of this in the news! God bless you.

@@1mremington I don't know much about it, because I am not religios. Google said that there is Ukrainian Orthofox Church founded in 1990 and it is different organization from the Russian Ortodox Church. But in 2022 both organizations existed in Ukraine. Obviously after 2014 Russian Orthodox Church was not welcome in Ukraine government but still had a lot parishioners probably. As a Russian, I heard from news that some Russian Churches were closed in Ukraine under the pressure of Ukraine government, but I never interested in detalis.
Talking about Donbass, based on google there was a branch of Ukrainian Orthodox Church, so maybe it was closed in 2014, after Donbass rebellion, but I know nothing about it.
It is very hard to get any details with so much lie in the news and youtube.
For example, there were several videos on youtube about eggs, sugar and butter shortage in Russia telling about empty shelves. So I look at the video then go to the nearest shop, see that everything is there, but maybe a little more expensive because of high inflation.
Or in 2022 it was very popular to post fake news in a local social network groups that you usually trust. You read the news, then check it and remember dr. House with his "Everybody lies"
