It's basically just an hour and a half of a Gore fest

But this one, this one is cinema. You actually get an experience worth your wild

@@MarcFaucher-ny7zjI really like the book, however Benchley made a lot of the characters in the book really quite unlikeable (Hooper and Ellen Brody in particular), and the ending was a bit anti-climactic in the book vs the film.
Those changes (the ending and making the characters likeable), were essential to Jaws being as good as it is. You root for all the characters (even the mayor is sympathetic), and that is a major part of why it’s so good - particularly important to the second half of the film, as the camaraderie between the three on the boat is one of the many reasons is such a great film.
……but I’d certainly recommend people read the book if they hadn’t. Like you said they’re missing out on a treat there.

And they were invented in the 1800's to take out animals a LOT bigger than a Great White! Yeah one shot ANYWHERE and BOOM whatever it hits catches an immediate case of DEAD! Fun fact: this scene was rehearsed 20 times where the shark jumps out of the water. 19 times Schneider was ready for the shark, the 20th time he wasn't so the reaction was his natural reaction. That's the take that was used for the film.

It wasn't "rehearsed" per-se. They tried to film it 19 times, but "Bruce" the mechanical Shark didn't work the first 19 takes. It finally worked on the 20th take.

    • @MichaelD8393
      @MichaelD8393 2 года назад +28

Another fun fact: the first time _Jaws_ was test-screened, everyone in the audience was so startled by the shark's appearance that they didn’t hear Schneider say: "You’re gonna need a bigger boat;" they were still screaming. Speilberg didn’t want real audiences to miss the line, so he & the editors extended the scene enough for people to settle back down and start paying attention again after seeing the shark; he also raised the volume of Schneider's voice for good measure.

Bruce was not scheduled to be used until the Orca based scenes.
The shark is hidden in the first half of the film on purpose.
The very first shark incident filmed was the pier/holiday roast scene. This was filmed in late May, in just 3 ft of water. They never had any intention of using Bruce for it.
Far more of Bruce was supposed to be shown during the Orca scenes but not for the beach scenes.

No. No entirely!! The shark not working had nothing to do with when it shows up in the movie. Its "Big reveal" in the chum scene in the third act of the film (Here) was in the script. It had nothing to do with the fact that it kept breaking down. The shark being kept "Under wraps" until the third act was a function of GOOD WRITING and a testament to how good the script was. They kept it off screen to ratchet up the tension. The fact that "Bruce" barely worked had nothing to do with where it was shown or revealed in the story. Not two weeks ago, I saw a video about a great white that big; 25ft! TRUE, they didn't get a measuring tape on it, but it was almost as big as the boat they were on! 32ft! I'd attach the video, but I don't remember the name.
(I've been binge watching African Lions all weekend. No idea why these Jaws clips popped up! But I've loved the movie since I saw it in the theater!)

    Fun facts:
    1) Roy Scheider’s “bigger boat” line was actually an ad lib. Like most classic cinema, it worked so well that Spielberg left it in. It also explains why Robert Shaw is looking at him kind of perplexed.
    2) They nicknamed the shark “Bruce” after Spielberg’s lawyer
    3) Robert Shaw actually got drunk for the Indianapolis monologue, but was so intoxicated that he couldn’t do it. He thought that being drunk for the scene might improve the performance.

I read that after a few test showings, audiences were still screaming overtop of him dropping that line - so Spielberg re-edited it to put a few more seconds of space in between after he first sees it.

I was lucky enough to see this masterpiece on the big screen. They really should show more old classics at the cinema. Think of the generations who have missed out on films like this, or Aliens, T2, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters, Laurence of Arabia, The Shining, etc.

What I love about this scene is the total tonal shift. Sure, we'd seen the Shark, but the last 10 or so minutes of the movie had been upbeat and lighthearted. But then, the shark appears and boom, back to dark, tense and sinister.

Its story, perfect, pace, perfect, casting, perfect, scoring and soundtrack.. perfect, cinematography, perfect, special effects.. perfect, and oh my god the acting... the acting.. just perfect. And this was Spielberg's 4th film.. and lets not even get into his fifth.. close encounters. This film was so great.. it cause a paradigm shift in the nations relationship with the ocean. Prior no one even thought about sharks, but forever after.. the first thing you think of with large bodies of water is sharks!!!.. hell if you a kid like i was, their were sharks in your pool, heck in your bathtub!!!! talk about mental damage after watching this film as a kid.
