Ah, I played this one for a couple hours. Felt mostly like you were doing random tasks for the king at that point. The 2nd game is better plotted/more focused from what I recall. Fun fact - the PCE-CD Monster Maker game is an infamous kusoge in Japan, often considered the worst RPG on the system due to game-breaking bugs like disappearing bosses, frequent freezes etc. The series is based on a card series I think... and yeah, it's completely unknown in the West.
This was such a pain to research! I ended up translating Japanese sites so who knows if I’m accurate. I always forget the word kusoge 😂 I’d say the second one is a bit better, at least storyline wise. There was a third one that used the barcode boy but I don’t think it’s playable without the scanner thing, I could be wrong.
I can't for the life of me find any details on the Monster Maker entries made by developers other than the SOFEL. I've been trying to pick out the entries that can safely be considered RPGs, but most sites just refer to the ones by Wiz and Jorudan as Strategy. I read one guy's account of trying to emulate Barcode Saga being pretty frustrating since the Barcode reader was designed for the DMG-01 models (the grey bricks). Every other model was too small.
