The title of this game is so long I couldn't even fit a tagline in. A super long title doesn't hide the fact there's virtually no substance to the game, as evidenced by the fact the video is less than three minutes long. You can skip this one if you like. Perfect bedtime story
Police shoot on sight? Game must take place im USA 😊
I only played the NES version in this case... it was even worse; IIRC there were no crates to defend yourself with. Also, why the speed like that? Gotta go fast, I guess. The movie is fun, but the games... yeah, it's what it is.
The NES version was strange for having a completely different set of enemies and items even when the levels were the same shape as the other versions. Riding animals was a fun idea, though!

Best gameboy horror homebrew out there,if you want another great and fun little homebrew check out borruga neo pinball ,its nuts!
Some may see it as a flaw, but I love that this is only 15 minutes long. As someone who rarely finds time for long RPGs, I'm all for bite-sized narrative games with tight stories. We never got them back in the Game Boy's day when games needed to justify the price of a cart, but it's great to see homebrew devs bringing that kind of experience to the system now. Oh and speaking of Ben Jelter, I'd love to see you review The Machine sometime!
They want to know blood type because in Japan, there is blood type personality reading (sort of like a horoscope but based on your blood type) which is very popular.
Oh hey, it's a beta version of iD's "Rage" 😂
There's a sort-of spiritual successor to Car Battler Joe you might want to check out, Freedom Wings for the Nintendo DS. It's even more obscure than CBJ. Completely different story and characters, and you're flying an airplane instead of driving, but if you look beyond that you'll see very similar game mechanics underlying it. It's also by Natsume. I don't think it's as good as CBJ but I still really enjoyed it in its own way. Let me know if you check it out.
@@8_Bit great I’ll check it out sometime!!
Great review, I really enjoyed your take on it. This is one of my all-time favourite games; it's actually the reason I got over my bias against the GBA (I didn't like that they went 32-bit, I wanted Gameboy to stay 8-bit forever!) and finally bought a GBA just to play it. I'm glad I still have my original copy. I love car battling RPGs and there's really very few of them. Autoduel by Origin Systems (makers of the Ultima series) was the original one. Car Battler Joe is essentially a JRG reimagining of Autoduel. The other two games that come fairly close to this are Hard Truck Apocalypse (2005, PC) and Mad Max (2015) but aren't really RPGs, but at least have enough elements in common such as courier and collect missions, upgrades, some trading, etc.
I liked the AI Patrick Stewart intro! 😄 Top review either way.
I still want to play
This game is so expensive! 🙁
How tf do you have less than 2k subs? Should be 2mil.
Weird, ive found this game really enjoyable and full of strategy, you need to use the terrain of all its worth here. Soon you will get to one of my favourites in gb library, knight quest. Im so excited, hope you will enjoy it🎉
It's weird how low content these Game Boy games have been. Sanrio made some surprisingly good games on the Famicom - though they were having most of those developed by their own team at Character Soft, rather than farming them out to developers for hire like Tose.
Have you skipped any title yet for this gbc review series?
@@ugarit5 not knowingly but I may have missed something
@@PortablePowerPodcast the completionist inside me shriekes at the tought of this series skipping any title😅
@@ugarit5 I’m determined to put myself through em all of it kills me
@@PortablePowerPodcast Respect. Also for such a large library,a good thing would be to take only the library of a region at a time, easier to keep track of and not feel overwhelmed. I would love to see a complete gbc pal exclusive library series, many unknown gems in there
That's Nobuyuki "Nob" Yoshigahara, celebrated puzzle designer. He sometimes used that silhouette as a kind of logo. (Apparently nobody else knows this anymore, because I can't find anything on the internet that explicitly associates Yoshigahara's name with this game.)
Great info thanks !!
0:51 RENT FREE 😂
I see this one called "Lazlo's Leap" in a lot of places.
That title screen observation made me laugh so much. Prescient stuff.
Strange little title
Thank you for this review of a game I had no idea about. Subsequently purchased a physical copy and absolutely had a blast with it.
Great video! I love your devotion to the GB & GBC. The original is my all-time favorite console. Keep up the awesome videos! 😊
Robopon was basically indie gaming back in the day.
Amazing game, definitely worth playing and even paying for, genuinely well made and worth it
Deadeus is so cool! I discovered it when it was featured as part of the original Analogue Pocket announcement in 2020 to demonstrate the device's native compatibility with GB Studio games. I eventually picked up the physical copy as well 😎 BTW, Incube8 Games have also published another horror-looking game called "Pine Creek" for the Game Boy Color. Where horror titles on the Game Boy from back in the day are concerned, perhaps Resident Evil Gaiden could be considered among them…?
Perfect timing - i just ordered a physical copy of this the other day! Love that the homebrew scene is filling the horror gap. The new Ben Jelter game Specimen 134 looks like a belter too from the demo.
0:33 oh he, a biblically accurate angel!
GBA has Yuurei Yashiki, at least; it's a mix between an adventure game with some stats and a VN with choices; it gave me Otogirisou vibes, but with items. But yeah, you're right - most horror games on those systems are probably homebrews (the most interesting ones I've seen were perhaps The Third Shift and Neighbor.). Not surprising when you think about it. Wonderswan had a couple Uzumaki games (quite topical now...) and Terrors (a VN) IIRC. Overall, not too many games like that on handhelds in that era. (great idea, by the way, there's no dearth of fun horror games in general!)
Never heard of that GBA title, is there an eng translation do you know?
@@PortablePowerPodcast Having checked various sites... sadly it doesn't seem to be the case; at least I couldn't find any 'full' patches. Yeah, I only saw it for the first time when I was checking out some text-heavy games for language practice, this one seems quite obscure even in Japan; there's just one longplay (though to be fair, I didn't look into it too much; didn't want to spoil myself) I could find online, that says a lot!
Not really a fan of the new "POCubed". I know what it means, but to a new viewer? Because I dunno about others, but only association I have with "po" is "pissed off". Is "Portable Power" already taken? 😅
Nah it’s a copyright thing, we’re worried Nintendo might have the rights to that phrase. And you know what they’re like at the moment !
@@PortablePowerPodcast I mean, you could search, but I understand if you don't want to take any chances with how busy you are (not being sarcastic here, btw). If you love the new name that's cool, but I would encourage you to iterate on it a bit. Maybe "Good Reviews of Rubbish Games"? Just put what it is on the tin, you know? 👌
You're going to love the second one haha
What you said about genre-definers reminded me of the number of people I've encountered who call every combining mecha series a "Voltron ripoff."
Old man brownie will forever haunt my dreams.....
I always preferred Robopon to the Pokemon games of the era because building and controlling Robots in battle was more appealing to me then catching and training animals for combat.
New to the channel, very much enjoying the content! For anyone interested in Robopon, the unreleased - but seemingly complete - North American localization of "Robopon: Star Version" found its way onto the Internet in 2020 as part of a larger Nintendo leak 🤖
ayyyy super cool to see someone review Robopon
They actually put in the effort to use Super Gameboy Features. A couple of their GB titles have SNES music too!
Game boy old was best + super game boy play in color on tv and games on super Gameboy can played whit 2 play games like tetris mit secret mario and Luigi only to see in old game boy whit link cable .
"Interrupted wank of a game" 😆
I actually never played Iridion 3D, but I can say that Iridion 2 was one of the most fun GBA games. The ost is also excellent.
Iridion 3D seemed more impressive to young me but after playing more Iridion 2 I really have to say it was a lot more fun.
I remember reading a gaming magazine back in the 2000's and this game was apparently influenced by Atari's Stun Runner.
Its similar to the katakis 3d proto on the gbc. Rail shooters on such small screens will always be boring
Gbc shovelware is still better than gb shovelware (less slowdown and bugs and better animated) and gba shovelware (some of the worst looking stuff ive ever seen, very soulless looking)
Shame to see this was the catalog on that day since the console was actually an incredible device. As a developer on the console, I can wholeheartedly say the machine has an insane amount of potential. Some of its technical limits could be mitigated with enough brute force. I guess that's why my game exists, so I can show how much better the console really can be. In case you're wondering, it's called Eternal Memory for the gameboy color.
@@Sinistar1983 this looks pretty outstanding actually, well done
@PortablePowerPodcast thank you, and hopefully, it will be worth it when it launches next year.
Calm down…
Shame there is no good rail shooter in the GBA. The system should be able to handle one.
You should do a special video comparing and reviewing all the gba lotr and hobbit games
Cool game, but I agree: looks slow and very boring 😅 Can't believe the Germs have the gall to ask $20 for the rereleases😂
Can't we get BEYOND the junge?
@@BagOfMagicFood haha oops
