Some of their stuff is seriously sophisticated. I mean I love the whole discography but this song in particular has so much to teach regarding writing, phrasing, arrangement, etc. As a musician it's fun as hell to pick these songs apart. There really is a reason why MoBo is such a classic!
Fuck, Lukens, I hope you found peace man. You saved so many people from feeling alone in their emotions, captured such a powerful feeling of community among so many lost souls, and probably pulled some people back from the brink of giving up entirely. Yes, every member of MOBO is special, they're extremely talented and wonderful individuals. But all of us, and this seems to be bizarrely true across most fans, see something special in Lukens. He isn't one of us, he's all of us, and I hope he knows how it feels to have somebody speak to a part of your soul that you didn't know existed. I fucking love this man, and I hope with every fiber of my being that he is on the path to recovery. Good luck man ❤️
yeah, its currently 4:18 AM and just maybe you're also staying up late listening to all the acoustic sessions of MOBO. It's hard to explain to people how much this band means to me, and maybe its just me but ever since they split, every song just hits harder and harder. There is no other band that has ever impacted me the way these guys did. They will forever be my all time favorite band. Something that hits me even harder is that the last line from Holy Ghost, their last album, is "even if you cant see it now, we're proud of what's to come, and you" We miss you MOBO
i was singing this song when i met my best friend on a game called dayz. he said he didn't shoot me specifically because i was singing my heart out in game chat. we started a group that accumulated 15-20 people. those were some of the best days of my life. thanks mobo
They like stuff occasionally on twitter, and Bren goes by they/them pronouns now, Jake mentioned it on a podcast not too long ago. Their last Instagram posts from like 2 years ago mentioned being in an out of the hospital a lot and I think their life is just too busy and filled rn for social media. I hope Bren comes back soon tho cause they’re easily my favorite musical artist of all time
i randomly found this song last night. i already spent all night listening to their live recordings. what a band. the singer is so captivating and full of emotion. The lyrics of this one, just damn. Many of us wish we could enjoy the memories of lost loves but we can't and that sucks. What a great band, I'm gonna enjoy listening to their whole discography.
It’s 5am on a Thursday morning and I haven’t slept. I’m struggling again. I hope anyone who reads this finds peace and finds hope. Modern baseball has always been that hope for me. They’re tattooed on my left thigh and will forever be a reminder to think deeper than what is on the surface. To remember life is bigger than what’s on the surface. I will watch this video for the thousandth time knowing I can find peace with myself.
I’ve had many of those nights myself. I hope you’ve had a few less since leaving this comment. A lot can change in half a year. How are you now? You’re right. There’s more this life offers than these sleepless nights. This struggle. Maybe it’s about finding our way through. I’ve spent the better part of my life struggling. When you know nothing otherwise - it’s easy to lose yourself. I’m glad you have hope. I’m glad you’re still here. Don’t stop thinking there’s a better day out there somewhere. You can find that peace you seek John! ❤️
It's from the show Sunday Night Salad! I understand people calling it weird because it's fucking strange but I love it hah; if you like Modern Baseball check out Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra, them and their friends are part of a label/collective thing called Making New Enemies and they make the show and loads of cool music and other stuff
As someone who is engaged to be wed to a wonderful woman, who can no longer access the pain of unrequited love organically, this song always brings me back to it any time I want to feel that hurt. I love music for this reason. I’m a very happy person these days and sad Midwest emo music helps me to feel a part of the spectrum of human emotion I don’t access frequently in life.
Didn't watch your ex’s set. I just left and thought about you; like when your teeth graze those lips, when you begin to smile. Later, you took my hand. You lead us to the doorway, but you let go of me once you saw all your friends. And I've known you forever. At least that's what I tell Jake, when I'm too drunk to walk home, when your brother's away. You suggested I write a song about the first time we met, but I can't seem to remember where or when. Couldn't watch your ex's set. Instead I wrote this song about you. Thought, "would you show your kids, if you found the time was right?" You'd tell them where and when. You never thought I'd leave the east coast. We were young and full of sin. And I too dumb to understand. Yet I've loved you forever. At least that's what I tell Holt, when I'm too drunk to lie, too drugged to be alone. You suggested I write a song about the first time we met, well I don't wanna remember there or then. So, is this the hook you wanted? Is it stuck inside your head? Can you sing it with your friends, or alone? So, am I what you needed? Say you love me to my face, grin and gossip, walk away and then go... "So is this the hook you wanted? To sing about me to my friends? Well you're just stuck inside your head, all alone. It sounds like in this version he says “teeth graze those spliffs” lol idk if he actually does but it sounds like he might have intentionally switched it up in this one
I learned this song on the guitar to surprise my guitar/singer friend. I went to his house, tuned his electric, gave him the lyrics and told him to try to sing along. That was such a killer night in my life, and this song caused it. We jammed out so hard so unexpectedly but I for once felt alright being in someone's world like that for a second.

You suggested I write a song about the first time we met
But I can't seem to remember where or when
Couldn't watch your ex's set
Instead, I wrote this song about you
Thought, 'Would you show your kids if you found the time was right?'
You'd tell them where and when
You never I thought I'd leave the east coast
We were young and full of sin, and I too dumb to understand
Yet, I've loved you forever, at least that's what I tell Holt
When I'm too drunk to lie, to drugged to be alone
You suggested I write a song about the first time we met
But I don't want to remember there or then
So, is this the hook you wanted? Is it stuck inside your head?
Can you sing it with your friends, or alone?
So, am I what you needed?
Said you loved me to my face, grin and gossip, walk away,
And then go:
'So, is this the hook you wanted?'
Sing about me to my friends, while you're just stuck inside your head,
All alone
Oh, you were all I needed
Said I loved you to your face, but you just laughed and walked away

every once and a while we all come back here.
I remember being in a garage band and my buddy showed me The Weekend by Mobo and we covered it my freshman year (2012) and that kick started my Modern Baseball addiction. They're my second favorite band only bested by the Beatles.
The fact this song isn’t basic rhyming poetry. It’s a story that explains losing someone that thought was right but wasn’t
