The issues I have with rechargable battery hearing aids are:
    1. You have to charge hearing aids every night. Not an issue but when travelling you have to bring charger with you. Or if the power in your home goes out over night you have a less than full battery charge in the morning.
    2. Hearing aid size. It seems that hearing aid size is slightly bigger with the rechargable battery. This may change with newer technology
    3. Charger. You cannot get a generic charger for your hearing aids. Have to use the manufacturer charger. Scenario. Took a day trip and decided to stay over night at a hotel last minute.
Do not have my charger with me...what do I do? If there is a generic charger for the major manufacturers, may be able to get one at a Walmart.
    4. Cannot change a rechargable battery yourself. Have to have provider or manufacturer change the battery.
I think the major hearing aid manufacturers need to take a closer look at the inconvenience of using rechargable hearing aids and try to resolve those inconveniences even if they have to work together to benefit the hearing aid user.
I still use disposable battery hearing aids today for the conveniences of using disposable battery hearing aids

Many hearing aid manufacturers make chargers that offer up to three days of charging without being plugged in. Starkey has made these types of chargers since at least 2018. I had the Muse IQ charger in 2018 which had that feature. I'm now using Genesis AI rechargeable aids, and there is also a charger for those that will offer three days of charging without plugging in the charger.

I recommend to start saving the plastic cases that some hearing aids come in. Then you can open the entire new packaging at once and load the new hearing aids into those. Also I would like to see the research that shows how many ingestions were due to hearing aid batteries as opposed to the myriad of other devices that use button batteries. Also again if you are elderly and can’t tell your medication from your batteries then you should seek help taking your meds as many potentially dangerous meds look similar.

This is a terrible solution to the problem. So now I'm forced to use scissors that are usually sharp enough to do serious damage to hands or fingers, and possibly introduce an infection through the wound. Seniors will definitely have a problem with this new packaging. So now there are 3000 cases of battery swallowing per year, but how many cases will be of incidentally cutting hands while unpacking the battery? I imagine ten times more at least. And yeah, you can STILL swallow that battery, so the initial problem isn’t even solved. Amusing to see this.

In their response to this case, the government completely disregarded disability accessibility and independence. For most other products that pose a risk to children, there are warning labels on the packaging of the product. It is the responsibility of the child's parents to educate their children and to protect them. The original packaging of hearing aid batteries was specifically designed to be accessible to its users. Personally, the new packaging will not be an issue for me, but I do see how it could be an issue for young children learning to wear hearing aids and for the elderly

That BIG headline was totally unnecessary. My immediate reaction was that the non - rechargeable disposable batteries are to be discontinued. SHOCK! HORROR! Thankfully that isn’t the case at all. However my feelings on the actual BAD NEWS is one of resignation to the usual government shenanigans. Absolutely nothing I can do about it. Just another government made problem that’s frustrating but thankfully easily solved. There’s always a way around a problem. In this case prior preparation of transferring the batteries to another packet or small container like those small Vaseline tins. Just pad the inside with cotton wool or even soft tissue paper with the batteries enclosed in the normal battery pack it comes in. Save the packets now! Or even simpler use the little plastic bottle that comes with ear plugs. Place one battery on the bottom then another one between the plugs plus one on top. This helps to insulate them from each other. Problem solved.

I love my disposable battery hearing aids. If I'm out somewhere and the battery dies, I can just buy some new batteries at a grocery store or drugstore. Try that with a rechargeable! My batteries last about 9 days, but I just change them out once a week to develop a weekly habit. Try making your rechargeable last a week, haha. And finally, rechargeable batteries lose their storage capacity as they age. A laptop computer that goes through daily charge/discharge cycles will lose about half of their battery capacity within 3 years. Do you want to be FORCED to replace your hearing aids every 3 years, if you have rechargables? It's one thing to want a new hearing aid, it's quite another to be forced. What if you're still happy with your hearing aid's features after 3 years, and don't want to get new ones?

Thought about rechargeable the last time I replaced my aids 2 years ago; but decided to stay with disposable because I have significant power needs and would have needed to recharge daily. I prefer the ability to get 5 days charge out of my aids even though there is some significant costs associated with this convenience. However after seeing this video, I will probably be more willing to consider rechargeable batteries on my next set of aids. Thank you for the information.

I live in a hurricane zone. When we have a hurricane, we lose power for 4-6 weeks. There is no way to charge rechargeable HA’s without power. I tried the rechargeable hearing aids and returned them for the disposable battery hearing aids. The rechargeables don’t hold a charge all day and have to be charged during the day. Plus you are tethered to a charger. If it breaks, you have no way to charge the batteries unless you buy a second backup charger. Plus I have a severe hearing loss and cannot hear the burglar alarm or telephone when the hearing aids are in a charger overnight. As others have said, how is it going to go when we board an airplane with scissors? People get food stuck in their throat and choke, so maybe we should ban food. And no, I don’t have a problem knowing the difference between a metallic battery and a pill.

Because they were still within the 3 year warranty period, Starkey serviced them and replaced the batteries for free. However, the next time they wear to the point where they won't hold a sufficient charge, it will cost between $300 and $500 per aid to replace the batteries. This is indeed bad news. Once more magisterial attitude is overruling reasonable freedom of choice.

Instead of batteries in one package - now we have 6 small batteries we have clipped and some sharp sissies, then try to board aircraft.... It will be I've dropped my battery version of I dropped my contact.

I’m sorry but her death is completely the parents fault. This law is a shame.

As a product engineering manager, it is shameful and irresponsible to NOT PREVENT FORESEEABLE HAZARDS. There are always technical solutions when manufacturers aren’t lazy and too cheap to come up with safe remedies.

Classic results of irresponsible people for their behavior blame everyone, pass laws to punish the responsible. I have rechargeable hearing aids, they are good for about 7 hours if you don’t stream calls or music. Worthless then and having to carry the bulky character is as big a problem as not having the hearing aids work. Those of us that travel by air can’t pack the charge in checked luggage. One more item to lug in a carry one.

STOP WHINING!! If it’s your grandchild or pet that is killed, this is an absolutely minor INCONVENIENCE. At this day-and-age,
    • there’s no good reason to NOT TRANSITION TO RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES
    • manufacturers that have to make investments to redesign packaging to be safe will frequently “kick the can down the road“ rather than expend funds on THAT management team’s watch. Selfish!!
    • This inconvenience doesn’t deal with disposal of EXPENDED BATTERIES, only with delivery of NEW BATTERIES. As a product engineering manager, this law doesn’t go far enough to deal with the burden that replaceable battery technology has caused. There is always a technical solution!
