I grew up with this game. It doesn't try to be a direct tie into the OG series like Zero or Homecoming, instead it's is own seperate thing like SH2 or 4, Is it own story and a good one in my opinion. I highly respect what Vatra did when you considerate this was there 2nd project and they had no real previous experience in the horror genre at all. The devs cared a lot on the franchise and they tried their best.
@@satanamogila9251 No it's not. It's a good game. If you are telling that the story is reimagination of SH2 story than you don't understand both games plot
@@teofilzieta4314 of course it's not the same, but trying to tell a story of guilty conscience for the third time in the franchise was a really bad decision
@@satanamogila9251 The controls aren't as terrible as Homecoming, and feels pretty good for a genre that was filling up with "over the shoulder camera" games. And how is the story is not reimagining SH2 story? The story is not about a main character trying to find something The main character doesn't have some kind of weird amnesia The character was never in Silent Hill before There is no "you actually did it" plot twist Is it just because the story is about the character's personal torments?, so I guess Silent Hill 3, 4 and Origins are reimaginations of Silent Hill 2 as well. But no, is just the story of a guy who has his life ruined due 3 different messed up events, some of which he didn't even do, he just feels bad and even responsible for not preventing them If anything is the most original Silent Hill since 4, since it's not dependent/based on any of the original games (Origins and SM were based on 1, and Homecoming took waaay many elements from the movie and 2, that one really was a cheap copy of 2) The monster designs are lame though, cool symbolism but the designs just look like people
I'm glad I gave it a chance. I heard complaints from fans and critics, so I almost passed on this one. It's not perfect by any means, but its story and characters are really good.
I honestly really loved my time playing through Silent Hill Downpour, I feel after Homecoming being a disappointment and Shattered Memories being such a different beast from what we're used to as far as a Silent Hill game goes. Downpour felt more of a return to form of what the series is and also paved a way for the future of the franchise by simply focusing on exploring the town as players did in previous games with new mechanics like treating a bunch of weapons with more tool like functions such using the fishhook staff thing to reach a fire escape as a good example of that on top of weapon durability returning from Origins. I've heard about the Monocle Man boss fight since his fight was teased but never shown and was integral to the plot, one of the few cuts that I feel would complete it, also there was apparently DLC where you played as the Cop that chased down Murphy throughout the game that was planned but scrapped due to Downpour's poor reception due to technical problems at launch to sales not being as high as they could be, the lost DLC lived on as a Comic for what was planned. Despite it being as criticized I do feel like Downpour is one of my favorite games in the series, sure the Monster Designs are kinda lame compared to previous entries save for the bosses to an extent, the storytelling and characters are the best thing about Downpour and even the gameplay is pretty tight as well, I honestly would love it if Downpour did get a rerelease of sorts, PC and otherwise so more people can play it cause there is a classic there worth seeing let alone playing.
You could honestly do a part #2 on this game 1) There's alternate designs for nearly all the creatures found online. The prisoners were originally going to have clown masks covering void faces. The screamer potentially was going to appear like a normal woman in the distance of the fog before she shapeshifts. 2) Cunningham was going to have a much larger role. The orphanage/monestary mixes the past of Napier, Charlie, Murphy and Cunningham but it's incredibly confusing without reading the Cunningham comics. 3) The lockpick was going to be used for side quests to break into cars and buildings. 4) The thunderstorms spawn more creatures but originally the plan was for the enemies ' AI to change noticeably and for the town's layout to change in real time. The Ps3 patches severely limited the duration of storms and particle effects due to memory limitations. 5) The AI of the prisoner minions with shanks is noticeably different than the AI of the brawler minions. There were going to be even move variations to represent abusive guards, snitches, etc.
I think this game could have been great if they just went all in on the criminal protagonist aspect like imagine if you played as a hitman or a robber who has completely resigned to the life of hurting people (something akin to Mike Ehrmantraut from bb and bcs) and instead of being tormented by what he did he is tormented by what he could be instead
That's one of my biggest problems with this game and Homecoming is that they chose interesting ideas for SH protagonists and how their psychology could be reflected by Silent Hill and then they completely botch their own premise. Murphy is a criminal, but he isn't really a bad guy. Alex was a veteran, except he wasn't.
On one side, having a character tormented by some things he didn't even do, he just feels responsible for not preventing them, and not being amnesic, is a good difference from James and Alex which makes it stand out On the other side, being an actual criminal would've been more interesting, yeah, he killed Napier and he basically becomes him in one of the endings, but it would be good to have a Silent Hill with an actual bad person
What a great way to finish off the western SH games. It's nice to see thrse cut contents of these games, and I gotta give credit to their concept works here.
*One of the my favorite Silent Hill games, downpour definitely an interesting game full of beautiful environment, amazing locations, adorable characters, superb storyline, thrilling monsters, excellent side quests, nice bgm, good sound effects and fabulous puzzles etc, some people says it's underrated but for me it's an epic game of one of the most successful franchise, live Forever Silent Hill* ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think the scuba diver is from the flashback cutscene were Murphy finds Charlie's body taken out from the water. There's police and two scuba divers there.
Some of these unused concepts really do explain why Tomm Hulett was so attached to Downpour, or why he still looks back fondly even after all these years. It sounds like an ambitious project that was progressively whittled down as development continued, even outside of the cut Anne DLC.
Silent Hill Book of Memories also has interesting cut content, it was going to be way too different in regards to the final version, more classic styled with a third person perspective like Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Downpour and SH2 Remake, and I think you could also switch to an isometric perspective to solve puzzles
Yeah the original Shattered Memories was a cool idea. There's some video of it online... Fixed cameras for exploration/puzzles and 3rd person for combat is still something I yearn for. Konami forced the dungeon crawler idea. During marketing the team claimed they were running into problems so they had to scrap that original idea but I think it was just cover for Konami. They claimed getting the game objects to work in both perspectives was the nail in the coffin but the demo footage shows it working and by 2012 even for handhelds that's not hard. You use mipmaps and LODs. Every engine had that available. RE Revelations switched between 1st and 3rd person.
Downpour was very much in line with the SH ethos--- a personal Hell, created for a specific individual to confront his crimes. The enemies were relevant to the main character, and not recycled from previous games. The story was interesting, the weird scenarios were memorable, and the graphics looked great for 2012, it opened up the Silent Hill world, made it feel more real, cold and oppressive. Thunder claps, rain would start falling, and you knew the monsters would soon appear...
Only SH2 is about personal hell. Saying its in line with SH ethos is an overstatement. SH was never about being a purgatory for random people Not recycled? Really? That cringy "boogeyman" is just another attempt to shoehorn a Pyramid Head type of character The story was interesting? It was just a reimagined SH2 story with the same guilt ridden themes All in all, a terrible game with very bad monster design and a predictable story
Funny coincidence that it was originally gonna be called Silent Hill: Downfall considering that there's a new Silent Hill game coming out named Silent Hill: Townfall
