    That's a really nice gate, you must have built a lot of things in the past. Great job! God bless and it was nice to see you wife a little bit as she helped out!

    Great gate! I would see if that gate fits another hole better, and build another one that fits that hole better. Something we do is turn the upper hinge pin down so the gate cant be lifted off easily. Setting the gate off the ground a few inches will help keep it drier and last longer too. Hope this helps a little and not criticising at all!!!

      The gate is 2 inches off the ground. I have videos with goats crawling under the gate, so I made close to the ground. If I have problems with the gate coming off, I will flip the top hinge pin.

    Really like the way you made the gate! Working out the best hinge system seems to be the thing to make future installation’s work out better. Great job especially for the first gate👍 enjoyed watching

    You should turn the top hinge upsidedown because the gate can be picked straight up if you do not.

      I agree with Jerry, an animal can push on the gate and it may rise and fall off.

    Very Nice.
    I doubled the top and bottom rails(horizontal) to avoid having to add extra boards for the hinges. I didn't use a diagonal brace either. With the weight I had already eliminated they were unnecessary and it also allowed me to use the hardware with two holes instead of three.

  • @bretdavisdmd
    @bretdavisdmd 4 года назад +2

    By default it’s in tension since it’s a cantilever. The brace doesn’t change that. It just help with sag as long as it’s running downhill from the top hinge. Cross bracing would just add more weight.

    I see Al Lumnah spreading gravel under his gates to discourage anything from digging there. Good idea, i think i will do that!

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 лет назад +1

      That what I was going to do with the extra gravel I had. But I dont have much left after installing the culvert.

    The hinge pins should be one up one down, otherwise say a cow could push it up and drop the gate. if the hinge bolt was farther away from the post it would swing both ways.
    I would put the hinge pins closer together and maybe another pull closure for he bottom. I'm totally going to copy your design its a great gate 👍 nice job * the larger one too 😉

      Yea, the larger gate is my favorite. Made 3 of those so far.

    I hate to tell you, but a fence that is not plumb will always look like it was installed by an amateur, or it was a mistake. Every time you look at it you will have an internal conversation explaining to yourself that even tho it looks shitty, you did the right thing.

    When you build your gate incorporate the hinges into the center of your wood instead on to the outside after the build by doing that the gate will swing both ways. Good luck.!!!!

    You may want to sleeve the latch hole with a piece of pipe to keep it from wallowing out the hole in the wood. My 2 cents.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 лет назад +3

      Good idea. I may do that.

    • @larndavies6954
      @larndavies6954 5 лет назад +3

      Good idea, I've used flat plate with hole drilled in centre for the latch and 4 countersunk holes in the corner to screw to timber to stop this exact issue. I had no pipe to sleeve it. Countersunk the plate flat in the timber also. Big difference was I was using dimensional lumber not round posts. A sleeve would work better in this case.

    I am from a farm and when cows or sheep etc go out of a pen (barnyard) you need a bid gate for them because if they all go running out at the same time they get stuck in the gap and your gate is very small so your going to have trouble with you or animals

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 лет назад +2

      I guess I sized the gates for a single animal, thinking I would have too many. That is a good point. I may go back and make larger gate openings. What do you think about 8 foot gates?

    Question - is the top barrel on the hinge suppose to point down and the bottom barrel up so someone cant just take your gate off?

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, you can put the hinge on that way. But I am no worried about people, just my livestock. But since this gate is wooden and 3 layers thick, it weighs 4 times what a metal gate weighs. So it is not easy to lift off.

    • @bigDH123
      @bigDH123 5 лет назад

      drill a hole in the pin, then put a washer and a cotter pin, gate wont lift off

  • @youpattube1
    @youpattube1 3 года назад

    That cable brace on the right side of your new wood gate is wrong. The gate will try to pull the top of the hinge to the left. Your cable does not resist this torsion. You can't push a rope. Move the cable brace from upper left to lower right, or make it an X brace.

    counter bore the hole the gain some adjustment for you top hinge. move your latch to the other side?

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 лет назад +2

      Not sure on the latch, I really want it on the barn side of the fence. That's why I may change to a different latch. Maybe mount it to the top of the gate, so I reach it better from both sides. Still thinking about it. Time to do some research.

    You want double-strap field gate hinges with a centre hole if you want the gate to open both ways.

  • @wandahunt5238

    Isee a flaw in your gate, when it gets cold the ground will raise up and it will be hard to get t6he gate hard to open

    Put hinge in center of gate

  • @bretdavisdmd

    Diagonal brace going the wrong way. The sag will alway be away from the top hinge.

    • @WoodScienceGuy
      @WoodScienceGuy 4 года назад

      I'm new to this and am going to start this project soon. If the bracing were changed, that would put the brace wood in tension, which is weaker than the video's braces which is in compression. Why not just cross brace the gate?

    You still don’t put the top hinge on right the top points down so you don’t Knox the gate off.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  5 лет назад +2

      These wooden gates are heavy. They weigh 4 times what a metal gate weighs. They aren't easy to lift off. I can switch the hinge if it becomes a problem.
