That small blade length difference can make a huge legal difference. Sub 3" blade on the Ritter is able to be carried in more areas than the 3" Freek. Both of my full and mini ritter's have come with better action out of the box than my benchmades have. I love that smooth controlled (slow) drop shut action and I've almost always had to tinker and break in my benchmades to get it where I like it. As far as pocket clips, the ritter is set up to accept a lot of different standard clips including benchmade clips.
I bought the Hogue Ritter mini a few weeks ago and it's all I've carried since then. It's perfect for cutting shrink wrap and boxes at work, super light, stays sharp, and the action is beautiful.
Do you work in logistics / Warehouse, you brought flashbacks of my old job lol, I used to have to unload containers full of pallets covered in shrinkwrap everyday for about 6 years straight. I can't count how many pallets i've broken down some of them covered in 30 layers of wrap.
The mini freak is like the 940-1 in that it feels truly feels like production knife luxury. That price is not amazing but as a pure splurge knife I really want one.
Well 1.5 years later and its basically a land slide because of pricing. The cheaper Freek is no longer in production and the S90V one is now 280 dollars while the Ritter has only gone up to 150.
Good comparison video. Nothing new really interests me. I was looking for more colors of manual MT Socom Elites. They are expensive, don’t really use the 2 I have now and I’m not chasing them. Your videos have me interested in the Hogue. I trust the overall build quality to be better. They do great edges too. I’ve had 20ish BM’s over the years and no spring failures. I rarely flick my knives or use just the lock to open them. BM does good heat treats IME. I also had 40ish Spydercos in the past. Several with S30V were chippy. Never had that problem with BM. I’m 6fr4 270lbs and like smaller knives. Not easy finding good small knives. I may just try the smaller Hogue. Keep the good videos coming although I’m sure it’s going to cost me.
I wish it was as rare for omega springs to to break as you imply. I bought a Mini Crooked River back in May. 3 weeks after I bought it, the spring on the presentation side broke. After waiting several weeks, Benchmade sent me a replacement set. It's a good thing that they sent me both sides, because only a week after I got the replacements, the omega spring on the clip side broke. Bear in mind, I use this for very typical EDC stuff. I don't have to use it very often, and I don't use it hard when I do. I love this knife as it feels great to use, but the fragility of those springs does not fill me with confidence. I will give credit to Benchmade though, as once I explained to them that it was impractical for me to ship them the knife because I lived in northern Canada, they were completely willing to send me the replacement springs and a set of spare screws (which was also good, because one of the T6 screws stripped on me, that was really fun to get out) directly instead of forcing me to send it back to them for service.
This was the first time I’ve seen one of your comparison vids (even though I thought I watch them all) and it was great!! Love your MO in doing comparisons.
I'm using the Bugout clip on my Mini RSK & it's AWESOME! It has the perfect profile for the size of the knife. Benchmade is now charging $10 for a pocket clip & screws. But when I asked for a clip for my 940, they said you can get 1 free pocket clip per calender year. You can also get 1 free replacement thumbstud per calendar year, & 2 sets of pocket clip screws per calendar year. I'm not entirely sure if that's total, or per knife. But they didn't ask for proof of purchase, which I thought was really cool of them refrain from requiring customers to go through a bunch of red tape. I'm really glad the Benchmade clip fits the Mini RSK. Not sure whether it's intentional, but either way, great job, Benchmade & Hogue!
I've been hesitant on pulling the trigger on both thise knives. I know i will soon just dont know which one first deff the larger houge ritter before the mini. I have the super freek and love it. Absolutely love that knife so I'm sure ill like the mini
Huh, that must be very recent. It was only just a few weeks ago that I got some clips in the mail from Benchmade for free. Glad I got on that train when I did I guess.
I love my mini rsk. Only complaint I have is the scales are actually quite sharp and defined. It's great for grip but damn, it has done a number on some of my pants and shorts pockets. Great comparison.
I bought the Mini Super Freak and think it is a great knife. The price is way too high but I like the Benchmade carbon fiber and you are paying for the warranty as well. Not sure how good the warranty is on the Hogue but the two I own are both nice quality.
Hogue has a lifetime warranty on all their knives. They recently (when they released the mini rsk) updated it to allow for disassembly (provided you don't mess up something taking the knife apart). Like BM they'll replace abused parts for a fee.
Was just at Hogue website. Doesn't appear they have a Lifesharp type service. That really should factor into the Benchmade analysis. I own the Freek in CF as well as Bugout in CF both s90v. Looking to pick up Ritter mini in Magnacut to play with.
Not really CPM 20CV & Bohler M390 are almost identical except CPM 20CV is an 🇺🇸 made steel and the Bolher M390 is made in Austria... He might of said M390 because Doug Ritter’s first batch he use M390 then decided to switch to the 20CV so the knife would be 💯 % made in 🇺🇸...
The Mini Freek is one of my favorite knives, and the Mini Grip to me is only much good in the 555 variant (154CM hollow grind😋). So I might be a bit prejudiced😑 I prefer the overall profile of the Mini Freek and I'd like to have me some S90V, but I'm still leaning towards the Ritter Hogue ... Certainly seems you get more bang for your buck with the Mini RSK. And personally I don't particularly care a whole lot for the looks of the CF scales and red thumbstuds on the Mini Freek😲 whereas the patterning on the Hogue Ritter's scales looks pretty cool to me😏 But then again, the Doug Ritter logo on the clip is really tacky🤮
Some places put the limit on knife blade size at 3 inches. (I believe California, for example, has that law for all folding knives.) With a 3 inch knife like these two it would depend on who mesures it and how. 2.9 and your fine. 3.1 and you are breaking the law.
Great stuff! Both are really nice but I think I like the Mini Freek. The s90v just does it for me. I've never sharpened it yet... Just light stropping only.... once. Lol.🍻
All the minis have an extra screw for the liner, on the full sized version the liner extends to a rear screw so one in the middle isn't needed. I got the black g10 version and that one screw messed with the aesthetics too much for me, but KW also sells black or silver screws and a black or silver clip with a little tool for 12 bucks (iirc), picked up a set of those and it looks MUCH better now imo.
@@nebulamask81 Thanks for the info, I don't usually mind hardware on knives but when they are out of place like this is really draws my eye to them. It really does mess with the visuals, I've seen these knives before but this is the first time I've noticed it, I think it's the orange colour that makes it stand out to me, because the black on black wouldn't bother me.
@@londiniumarmoury7037 The black g10 uncoated bladed version has silver screws so they stand out on that as well unfortunately. @@nebulamask81 Damn I thought they would have blacked everything out like they did on the large M4 Freek. The Screws on that don't bother me at all they almost blend into the dark patches on the handle scales.
@@londiniumarmoury7037 The large ritter came out with these same two color options at first as well. The Benchmade clips will fit fine on the Ritter Hogue. I’ve got one on my ritter right now.
What Benchmade clip did you go with on your Mini Ritter? I'm leaning towards a Bugout clip off of eBay.
The mini freak is like the 940-1 in that it feels truly feels like production knife luxury. That price is not amazing but as a pure splurge knife I really want one.
I LOVE my Ritter Hogue RSK MK1 G2 Large Orange and it cuts like CRAZY............Thanks for the Video MC.

Amazing hindsight observation. 👏
I put the Rouge CF kit with barrel spacers and a deep carry clip on my original mini Freek, that was the winner for me.
Current prices (Oct 2022)
Ritter mini rsk $149
Mini Freek $279

Thats unfortunate. Ive literally never had an issue with omega springs. Owned tons of Benchmades and others over the years.
Never had one break either. I have 25 different benchmade knives. 3 of them were absolutely abused and never had one break
My favorite two small knives for sure. They get quite a bit of pocket time over the larger ones now. Great comparison.
Both evolutions of the mini grip IMHO.
Just ordered the Ritter in magnacut and g10
A point that you can talk about is the size of the washers. Strong washers means more solid knife.
This was the first time I’ve seen one of your comparison vids (even though I thought I watch them all) and it was great!! Love your MO in doing comparisons.
I just purchase the Mini Freek in M4 with the G10 scales like your Super Freek. What do you think between the Mini Freek G10 M4 vs Carbon Fiber S90V?

I like smooth handles especially when the ergos are good but the hogue is better imo.
Who else would gladly sacrifice efficient blade handle ratio for another half inch of handle on either of those?
I thought the Ritter was CPM 20CV not M390? Does that change your comparison to the blade steels?

i just picked up the s90v Benchmade Mini Freek and its awesome. Its the best Benchmade I've ever handled.
I always remove the thumbstuds on my axis lock knives. I don't use them anyway and it makes it easier to strop and gives you a bit more cutting edge.

I have that same mini rsk and it’s constantly in my pocket
And the bugout clip will fit the mini rsk! 🙌
Dumb question but what is the legality you mentioned? New to the knife world thanks

I really like the handle of the freak
The handle feels terrible on the base model Freeks, picked it up and immediately set it down. Didn't want to touch it again.
I don't understand why Benchmade hasn't released a full sized Freak in this configuration with the carbon fiber scales/S90V blade.
Great stuff! Both are really nice but I think I like the Mini Freek. The s90v just does it for me. I've never sharpened it yet... Just light stropping only.... once. Lol.🍻
Best knife reviewer on RUclips hands down!

The Freek in carbon fiber looks a lot nicer imo.
Got one in purple. This thing is tiny. Gifting to my wife.
The mini freek for sure. Better material, more pleasing design. Hogue has issue with HT of their 20CV.
I know these are smaller knives but I much prefer the regular framing of your vids. This feels way to cropped in
Mini freek should of been made the same size a the mini presidio 2. Its the perfect mini size. The mini freek is slightly too small for my taste.
Not first
Benchmade looks better .
