    heh, I just got my first Hogue last week -- a full-sized RSK in Magnacut. So far I like the design and ergonomics a lot. Haven't done enough with it to judge edge retention, but it did take a very sharp edge.

    I bought a Deka wanting the exact same thing, a folder in magnacut steel, since I did not have any(I also have loads of knives).
    Just like you, I am not in the US. My Deka came with a very wonky assymetrical sharpening job. You could see two separate lines on the edge of the rough and fine sharpening steps. When resharpening the thing with a fixed angle system, I found out that the tip of the blade was burned to $hit, as well as was the entire edge, but not even close to how the tip was ruined. The steel came off of the tip at least twice as fast as on the rest of the blade. This turned into a separate "tip belly" I managed to save somehow, but I don't think I even grinded all of the ruined steel on the tip.
    I contacted their support, gave them all the info and they were "looking into it". I asked them to send out a new blade, as that is the cheapest solution for both parties. I asked for updates a few times and they just came up with excuses and then completely ghosted me in the end. That was so disappointing, since I even shelled out 90$ for some custom CF scales for the damn thing.
    US companies knives in many cases are overpriced and their impeccable craftmanship/warranty claims are pure BS. If you are not in the US they could not give a rats a$$ about your warranty. I confirmed this with Cold Steel, SOG and now Hogue.
    They are no better than the reputable Chinese manufacturers, some are even worse these days. Even a budget(or mid depending on your budget) manufacturer like Petrified Fish offered to send me a new knife for free when the detent ball fell out on one of their knives (it was an easy fix I did myself since I did not lose the ball).
    Benchmade sent me replacement omega springs with no hassle, but if the issue was bigger, not sure how it would go.
    I still didn't get a Spyderco that needs to be warrantied for any reasonably serious issue and I have gotten about 10 of them by now. But that should be the norm not the exception, as I have 20+ Kizer knives that I can say the same thing about and they are probbably in total less expensive than the 10 Spyderco's.

    This is why I chose to only buy magnacut from a custom maker. I got mine ($3 dive knife from Cypress Creek), and it was kinda pricy at $300USD after shipping but the product absolutely delivered on all the magnacut promises and in a beautifully done grind that lets you use the benefits of magnacut.
    Soft magnacut in a poorly done heat treatment completely negates the factors that make it great in the first place. Edge stability, stain resistance, wear resistance from high hardness, etc are so dependent on heat treat and magnacut is only worth it from a high quality maker otherwise it's just not that much better than regular 440c or something

    Hello. Thank you for sharing your opinion.
    I only have 1 knife from Hogue, the Extrak in m4, which i received recently. I do not have a good idea about it's performance yet, but it does feel hard on the ceramics i use to touch it up, and it takes a very aggressive edge. The fit and finish are great, as well.
    I do not know if i am personally lucky with my specific knife, but with all honesty i would like to recommend this:
    Be a bit more patient and try again next month.
    It is summer time for the western hemisphere and people go on holidays. Most companies are underhanded this time of the year, and many people on these customer support positions replace those who are on leave.
    Do not let 1 stupid person ruin your overall impression of a company. Sprint runs have this risk.
    I do believe that if you contact someone else from their customer support, you will get a replacement. I honestly do not know how much the rsk cost you in total at UK, but i am sure the cost is worth a second attempt.
    I had similar experiences with companies in the past. With patience and politeness, i was usually successful.

      Thanks for your feedback man! I'm sure I was one of the few who got one out of spec and the majority are fine. But I'm still upset that we can't be 100% that what we order will arrive to spec. Imagine buying a car and you're not 100% sure the seatbelts work!! You're right that I shouldn't let one idiot spoil my knife and my mood though 👍

  • @richc5078
    @richc5078 11 месяцев назад +2

    I also ordered one of these and I'm in Canada, so also took forever to get it, got it in mid-May. Mine came out of the box with a chip on the edge already (I was like wtf? I've read this is common if a steel is soft?) and also the tip wasn't sharpened down all the way. I don't know how to describe it, like the bevel at the tip looks like the guy sharpening on a belt went down half way and just said "ok", and left it, and it's like that on both sides. My scales are also ridiculously coarse and completely unpocketable, I can't even wipe it with a tissue or cotton swab or alcohol wipe as it instantly rips it and leaves the fibres in the scale which makes it even worse.

    • @stroppystuff641
      @stroppystuff641  11 месяцев назад

      Sorry for your misfortune man! Chips are usually less common with softer steels as they're usually less brittle. However it sounds like you had a burned edge from over heating when they sharpened it. Sucks that you had a new knife arrive in such bad condition :(

    underperforming steels seem to be a real problem, i remember transparent knives testing a hinderer which was too soft, as a result rick sent him a cease and desist letter which completely turned me off that brand.
    lionsteel had a few horribly treated m390 knives in the past (not sure if they are doing better now) but i remember that some of their tre models turned out to be comically low at 52rw.
    personally i never had a bad experience with hogue's customer service (quite the opposite, they sent me replacement scales and screws when the clip of my deka fell out), i also am pretty happy with the performance of my magnacut deka, s30v k320 and cpm-154 mf-1, but obviously i haven't tested them.

    Thanks for the vid. I have one of those waiting to ship to me, but I'll admit the bubble is burst now. I am probably one of those who can't tell the difference. So I have to thank you doubly. • @stroppystuff641
      @stroppystuff641  11 месяцев назад +1

      90% chance yours will be to spec so no need to worry, I'm just salty that they treated me badly and that it happens so prevalently in the knife industry. I could tell I was under angling by the feel and sound. If you think of the sharpened bevel as a flat spot then when you over angle the apex will scratch across the leather and when you under angle it the shoulder of the bevel will scratch across the leather. The shoulder doesn't "scratch" as badly because it's rounded obviously but it feels and sounds different to the smooth sharpened bevel.

    I’m cool with an honest bash video. I think the problem is, manufacturers haven’t sorted out the heat treat yet. Saw a similar thing with S30V being chippy 20yrs ago. It took 5-10yrs before it got sorted out industry wide. Some still can’t heat treat it. M390 and 20CV are consistently tested out very soft. The makers are trying to cut down on warrantied knives, so they heat treat them soft. But they are charging an arm and a testicle for the premium steel, which when heat treated soft, doesn’t perform for shit. Generally, you are better off to get the basic steel, which tends to be heat treated much better and just pocket the difference. Instead of blowing a lot on steel, go get some AWT scales to put on the basic knife. THAT is an improvement that is almost guaranteed to put a smile on your face, given the precision and quality of their scales.

    While I don't think Ritter/Hogue handled the situation properly, the fact remains that they were willing to exchange the knife for a new one and that one of the author's friends did receive a knife with an HRC of 63.5 -- within the advertised range. Get a defective knife, exchange it for a new one is the basic protocol. The situation is not one where Ritter/Hogue is intentionally ripping people off by falsely advertising an HRC of 63-64 -- as his friend got one that fell within this advertised range. The author's complaints about not wanting to pay customs charges is his problem, not the company's. He should return the knife for an exchange or stop goddamn whining.

    I have been a professional knife sharpener for 30 years. This video makes absolutely no sense from a professional point of view. Take it or leave it.

      Because you're a professional sharpener it makes no sense that Hogue sold a knife out of spec? Cool story

    I'm a hogue fanboy. Own four of their folders. Including a carbon fiber magnacut deka. So videos not for me but I watched anyway. You make accurate points on the problem of hardness testing for the average person. It is frustrating.
    Much of the Italian m390 is softer than I would prefer but they give a realistic range on the spec sheet. I'd prefer that to lying.
