The W126 truly is a kind of paradox. It's on one hand the first true modern Mercedes (compare it to the chrome plated W116), with many technical innovations, but at the same time it's the most iconic and classical of all models. It's body of course is very boxy for today's standards, but is an extremely well proportioned type of boxiness.
Yes it is the best! If in circa 1980's you asked Porsche to conceive and build a Rolls-Royce, the Mercedes benz W126 would have been the answer! Power without the temperament, imperial but measured. Over-engineered & nothing wasted. Germanic to a fault but also elegant in ways that neither its predecessor nor successor could manage. There is nothing quite like these cars: the chunk-sound made when closing the doors tells you that the minute you step in. The smooth power, effortless mile-eating ability, super-high quality interior which feels like it was hewn out of stone and serene silence has never quite been surpassed by Mercedes ever again. These really are truly the last great Benz's: engineered to perfection with no electrics to hide 'mistakes'. They will never be engineered, designed or built like this again!
Adore my '83 300 sd. $2,500 in 2003 Superb daily driver. Love em, keep them maintained from the ground up, and they improve with age. Wish could say the same for girlfriends....
Wow, just wow; I can tell by those interior pics that this vehicle has been garaged its entire life and spent its time away from the sun. I inherited my mother's '83 380SE when it was 20ys old and in mint condition (silver with the same tan leather interior) however it spent a couple of years outdoors in direct sunlight (Sydney Australia, so the sun is pretty harsh down here too) when I moved house and the interior leather, carpet and trim quickly faded out completely and the wood veneer cracked and faded too in just a few short years; evidently those interior materials were not designed to be UV-resistant in those days. It also unfortunately succumbed to the common rear quarter/parcel shelf rot that many of these do due to the poor design of the rear window seal and it ended its life in a wreckers yard. That car though began my ongoing love of the Mercedes 126, and I have just recently picked up a nice '83 380SEC coupe as my weekend cruiser.
I saved a burgundy one from an auction in San Diego, a 90 300 sel, haven’t had time to get to it, but did quick tune up, fresh fluids, next is tires and a bigger inspection and she’ll be my daily a bit to replace my 140, super excited even more now. She’s a bit rough but she’ll do her job
Great video! I just bought a 1991 300SE a few months ago. It has since been my daily driver. Not nearly as nice condition. It was driven regularly and not nearly as meticulously maintained. I have been slowly putting it back to a presentable condition and hope to bring it back to some semblance of this car. All while daily driving it 40+ miles a day.

I have a 1985 W126 280SEL,I bought it off an older man as he had hes licence taken away ,paid $1200 spent $400 on a service and literally drove it all around Australia in 8 months ,NOTHING failed ,sat on 120KMH on freeway ,not over heating no major oil comsumption ,i needed a cheap car for a trip from Sydnet to Melbourne to Perth and up to Darwin and back inland to Alice Springs ,talk about reliability say hello to the W126 with the M110 straight six,its done 628000 kilometres as of 2024 August
The most imported model in USA, I own a 300SD 1983 turbo diesel engine inline five cylinder! I think the 126 chassis is there best most attractive model! I have parts from many junkyard parts from LKQ junkyards here in Texas! I have saved a fortune doing all my own maintenance!

When you say you prefer the euro headlights, my question is whether people drive the cars at night. Most US spec headlights were sealed beam halogen, which meant reliable light. How does a euro spec w111 or w126 measure up?
In their era they were really something, now they seem pedestrian. When I was a kid that mercedes feel like a spaceship, speed meant nothing always silent and smooth. Now all cars are quiet and supple.

Should have kept their '81 turbo wagon... flawless performer. But miss fancy pants had to show off with an S class. Later bought a used 92 300se... another junker. She finally wised-up and now drives a Mazda!
in fact the W140 was the pinnacle of mercedes. never again was the phrase "the best or nothing" more true than with the introduction of the 140. they put all efforts they were capable of in this car. it's not as much elegant as the W126 but truly the best car of the world at it's time. unfortunately later models from around 93 on experienced a drop in quality.

Well at least have the decency to keep the car clean when showing it off and a video trying to promote this car it really looks terrible the way it’s kept it doesn’t take much to clean a car to take junk out of the backseat in the front seat and make it look presentable before showing it on a video that is seen by millions

Maybe if you spent a few hours detailing it and making it look nice and personable and start like a chunk pen with stuff in the backseat the front seat it looks awful! Yes true tank...my friend get 1988 560SEL back in 1995... still has today over 350K - not working AC , some minor electrical issues - still runs good.
Mine also done 240k but everything work as a charm just minor elctrical issies
an army truck once ran over this W126...the army truck toppled but the W126 was still on the road and did not topple...
