  • Please understand that sometimes context is missing due to the short clips on RUclips.
    In the dynamic that is shown here the element of crashing in while you hit him with your elbows is missing.
    We filmed it but the audio is lost.
    In UC we don't "defend". We are counter offensive. That's a different dynamic.
    Also action always beats reaction!
    Keep it simple!

    Great instruction, and I agree with most of your points. It is better to shield your head and crash in rather than try to reach out and block, when attacked, in most cases, or at least it's a better technique to default to. However, although my school does teach blocks like the former, they also teach how to cover your head and work off that in similar ways to what you've taught here.
    I think both can be used in different situations and it is good to know how to do both, and the place I go to currently is one of the best in my area and is the only one to teach weapon training (FMA).
    Other than that small point of contention, I think you're doing great stuff here and I would love to see more of these practical and realistic techniques.

Some of this looks quite similar to traditional Japanese juijitsu. Especially the entering to eliminate the power of your opponent. I kept feeling I would want to instinctively want to move outward..which tended to leave the opponent to attack again. I wanted to send this to my 10 year old daughter I put into jiu-jitsu..but I think her mom will get upset about the language.. definitely following you!

    Very good video - after years of training, this Cover-Crash- Counter concept gave me a big plus in confidence. I did years of kung fu before an "knew" how to answer in 5 ways to nearly every attack. But the Problem is, like said in the video, you do not know what is coming and action beats reaction.

    • @rooroo9216
      @rooroo9216 2 года назад +1

      In other words gross motor skills > fine motor skills, I like that this guard is closer to the head I’m just wondering about straight punches harder punches to see instead of round ones and if a similar guard to high guard in boxing would help? The other thing I worry about with these high guards is although they might help stop punches, I worry about takedown attempts being easier with the hands so high up.

    • @mutant0177
      @mutant0177 2 года назад +1

      @@rooroo9216 Yeah, but not only that you are too slow to do the technique and have no time to choose the right one. And you are not in a controlled situation and will flinch in a more "unprofessional" way. Another plus point to the cover shown in this video is that is a natural response to something which comes quick to your a head (like a ball or milk can from the top of the stock pile) you only have to sharpen that and step into the threat.
      A boxing style guard in my experience depends a lot on the angle of the attack and you do not protecting your neck. I got a shot on the neck/end of the skull in sparring and that caused neurological problems instantly, even if that was not with full power by accident and with gloves.
      Takedown: Maybe you can get takled but lean forward and you could sprawl if you sense that kind of action.
      It is clear that it is not perfect (what ever that means) for everything but it is a very good "one-fits-all" action if you do not know what ist coming. Straight punch to this cover (tip of your elbow) without cloves is no fun for the attacker.

    • @rooroo9216
      @rooroo9216 2 года назад

      @@mutant0177 Yeah I can see how the jab could kind of hit the elbow and break the knuckles, connect to the arm, bounce off left, bounce off right, above, or if this charging in technique is applied correctly they’ll probably end up getting their jab arm jammed up a few times anyway being too close. The opening up action downwards could also be a strike, or a grab/slapping an arm down (with a head butt) and then the strikes come. It’s certainly one of the better guards I’ve seen, I just think any enemy (if he’s even still standing that is) would immediately resort to grappling or takedowns after seeing so many of their strikes fail, it can happen a lot in fights. Sprawling is a good choice, hopefully they don’t fake the takedown, but there also might be some time to jam the elbows on/brace against their takedown (it’s kind of hard to explain how it looks).
      What happened there sounds similar to what happens when a neck chop, hammer fist or other strike accidental or not happens on the neck, it might not always knock someone out like in the films, but cause a delay/stun them for a bit. It’s also probably why back of the head strikes are often banned, but can still happen now and then by accident.

    • @schoolofselfprotection
      @schoolofselfprotection  2 года назад +5

      There is never a 100% solution..When somebody takes me down..I’m still conscious. Point of this is to protect the head! So they don’t knock
      Me out! You need to look into the gaps of your arm to see if he goes for a weapon or low line attack. If he goes low you sprawl. Fighting is always dynamic. You need to adapt all the time. But at least you can adapt because you are still conscious instead of knocked the f❤️ck out.

    Taught and trained in JKD/Kali/Silat for close to 32 yrs. Still train in Silat and have considered training in Defence Lab (DL). I've dropped the DL idea since I found Michiel's and Lee's Urban Combatives.
    Michiel and his Urban Combatives is excellent. For me, my opinion only, it's is a very effective art that is somewhere between Silat & Defence Lab (DL). In many ways it's better than DL because it not as hookie and Michiel and even Lee are not always pimping you to buy their products/upsell you on their products.
    Also, Michiel is so spot on bout using and articulating your Self-Protective actions when applying them in a Self-Protection situation as using what is "Necessary & Reasonable".
    Many MFers teaching Martial Arts don't teach realistic Self-Defense. I know plenty of JKD/Kali Instructors that are good technicians but can't fight their way outta a paperbag. At best they are teaching unrealistic Self-Defense techniques and at worse they are teaching a cultural dance.
    I was fortunate or unfortunate if you must that since age 13 the Self-Protective situations I got into were against 2, 3, 4 AssClowns at once. So with that background and experience I trained my JKD/Kali/Silat with a real world mindset understanding the treachery of a Street Fight.
    Silat is so fucking good, like Michiel and Lee's UC at teaching you to deal with multiple opponents.
    Nor do instructors teach the ramifications of your actions in a Self-Protection situation, i. e. Jail or a Civil Lawsuit or both. For new students I had this was generally lesson #3 I taught them or in the 1st week of their training.
    Dropped 4 Turds last time I was in a street fight and when the Poe-Poe arrived they determined I was the aggressor and I was arrested.

    You always have to look. Sometimes when you go to knee you have to see if his arm and/or hand fell, or is, in front of him, thus, that knee may not work. Always look, this is split second stuff sometimes. The best thing, if you're outside, is just take off and run, if not be prepared to scratch, bite and claw if necessary. That fear will become adrenaline and then survival and then action. Run, run, run if you can, most will not chase you.

      I am from India, your videos are so close to real life I hope some day I can come to Netherlands to train under. So many other courses are theoretical and don't mimic real life

    I'm tutoring a 12 year old in the art of K1 and self defence. After seeing this, I'm going to rethink my teaching of not showing the blocking techniques, I've been practicing for the last 16 years. Awesome tutorial - definitely subscribed.
