Some people you buy stuff from these days won't even offer to shake your hand, this seller is going above and beyond. Good luck coaxing the old girl back to life.
man you're not kidding, I see this tine and time again they spray a little spritz down the carb and expect a engine that's been sitting for 50 years to be good to go and start, its wagon, tank is way back there, fuel pump isn't exactly young, once its cranking then spray it in and keep spraying it until if fires, if you pull back and it begins to fade spray more until the carb takes over .. gasoline has a hard time burning out oil, they use ether cuz it burns well mixed with oil, why they use it for diesels a lot for cold starting, it will fire with weal spark or a cold glo plug . . . I see so many people do this, read the dang instructions... AAAGGGHHHH!!
@@deandee8082 your absolutely right man. What we did do is install a fuel cell, new fuel lines front to back and an electric fuel pump so she all the she needed, didn't want to drown her either...
Ignition timing was way off, thats why it wasnt starting, as soon as the other guy rotated the distributer to get the ign timing closer to spec it started right up, hopefully they put a new starter in that car! If its the original its not going to live long after all that hot cranking
lolololo I know man I was screaming SPRAY IT IN THE CARB AS ITS CRANKING!!!! he put a lil spritz in there and called it good, you see how much dood had to use to get her running on her own, they saturated the barrels with oil put some dang ether in her please.. its not good to lean on starters like that, better off pulling it and yes you can pull these old cars cuz the trans pump is on the rear output shaft so long as you spin the drive line she will pressurize and crank the engine over, had 2 55 hemi Mopars and left the battery on a few times, roll down a hill and cross fingers, didn't take much a full quick revolution maybe . . . its going to be a beauty, insane how rusty the top side is but how clean the underside is, mainly due to massive oil leaks I bet..... love the car tho.. couple lucky doods, well worth an adventure just carry a case of ether battery and starter with you and don't be afraid to use the ether . . lol
@@deandee8082 Must not have watched Tony's vid on putting alot of fuel into vehicles that have been sitting for a long time to saturate the cylinders and intake tract!!!!
Exactly!! The first clue was it backfiring through the carb. Timing was way off. I've seen this on so many RUclips videos and all I can do is sit here and shake my head. Not many people left that know how to work on the old stuff.
I had a blast meeting Kiwi & Steve, both super nice guys. Wish I could have stayed longer, but it was great to see the old girl fire up after sleeping for 40+ years! First starts at 8:00 and 13:35
Ponytail Steve, a local auto shop teacher, jumped in at 12:24, knew a lot about this carb/engine combo. He prefers carb cleaner to starting fluid, that's what he's spraying here.
Great job Chris, et al. Ticking the boxes one by one. Up next - water pump/thermostat?, generator? Old rad look like it's gonna make it? Rusty freeze plugs? Very wise of you to take advantage of shop, resources and assistants to minimize inevitable roadside fixes. Looking forward to drive line/e-brake repair. Assuming you got out of Dodge before crazy heavy rain flooded much of SoCal. Happy Trails Kiwi!
I was going to say that for some poeple, it's just a pile of shhh..crap. For us? It's like going to emergency and the team brought back someone to life. What a great feeling and a relief when the engine showed signs of life. It wasn't will it start, it was when? Im very happy for you Kiwi. Probably everyone who was watching the video, waiting, waiting, wait.. wait... wait!!! Pow! 🎉. Cant wait to see the next video.
Love this car & series! You got a helluva crew there. The old gal liked the guy with the pony tail. She came right back to life when he played with her timing! Look forward to the coming episodes.
Go KIWI! Eric, ercost, I assumed you were of a younger generation by your posting style, not one of 'us' 🤣 Tony would have given that carby half a gallon with his squirt bottle.
You know you're going to have an adventure when you have to use a hammer&chisel to get the grime off, lol. If anyone can make all the way home, it's Kiwi!
I can hear that starter fluid just helping grind the cylinders away. Next go around I would use a weed wacker mix with oil. May keep the bugs away too, lol
Kiwi, look up a salvage yard in Springerville Arizona. I believe it’s called Springerville auto wreckers. Last time I was there, they had 3, possibly 4 1959 Plymouth wagons there. Most of the trim still on them and the spare tire cover panel on one of them.
Seven thunders uttered their voices as the engine awoke from its 40 year slumber whilst a cloud of menace sprang forth from the exhaust. It is this feeling that hooks you into becoming a mechanic. That, and a love of problem solving. By the way Kiwi.....nice tires.....same as mine on my wagon. Ha.
OH the memories of the era ---- Chrysler did everything different (than Ford or GM) -- ball & trunnion driveshaft joints, "Typewriter Drive" automatic trans. selector, goofy brakes...Plaid interiors... the list goes on. Their TORQUEFLITE trans, however - very good!
Yes we did a compression test and checked all the valve clearances. The valves were good. Compression was low ish. Think the backfire was too much advance ... maybe
Reminds me of the time in Port Hedland that we had almost no compression after changing a head because spectacular valve guide wear had soaked the bores in oil unseating the rings. We’ed made the mistake of wiping the bores clean. So no compression. We were about to put Bon Ami down the bores to act as a mild abrasive to reseat the rings but finally got it to start by using oil to get enough compression. Then I took it out on the highway and flogged it repeatedly accelerating hard. At first it left a smoke trail every time I punched it but after about 20 miles the rings reseated and the she stopped smoking. Though for a minute you might have to resort to some voodoo ring reseating to get her to go. I think it ran long enough so you have enough engine compression. to make the trip.
I see Christine the grocery getter. As a one-off remake of the old movie 🍿. Props on your would stick prop.👍😉 AND THIS IS REALLY GREAT CAR THAT HAVE!!!
Did you redo the whole brake system? If you didn't I would be super suspicious of it causing issues after it gets used for awhile. They always do for me after a long slumber.
😂 lightweight’s, electricity, vehicle lift, replacement parts and a bigger cast than Ben Hur, “ The tension mounts” will they make it ? Don’t bloody see why they shouldn’t 🧐
13:37 SHE'S ALIVE!!! This eerily resembles a sequel to "Christine" someone has woken an angry beast. Even the smoke coming out of the cylinders adds to the drama. She sounds happier after a good warmup. She's got such a good patina! I wouldn't change much on the car. I'd name her "Tina"
Heck, that baby's gonna run and drive like a dream, rebuilt carb, new front breaks, new tires. Those tires are so nice, she ain't even going to know how to act,,,, there nicer than anything that's ever been on it before.... Long as that tranny works.
