Awesome Info! Looks like just what I need to know to repair a 2 inch spear hole made by a tree limb that punctured my roof above the mbr. Turns out, roofing repair companies get pretty busy right after big storms! Who knew? :-) Seems like this should buy the time needed until a final repair can be made. Thank you very much!

Great video - gets right to the point. A recent storm punched a hole in our roof and the roofing company is taking a long time to respond. With more rain on the way I hit google for a temporary fix and this came up. I have very little handyman experience but was able to get this done with no problems. Thank you sir for your help!!!

I wonder if it would work as well if you put the metal under the shingle that has the hole Wouldn't be as noticeable as having the large square metal on top of the hole. ??
That may work too. My plan is just to get you by until the weather is decent to get out on the roof or have someone come out and fix it.

You should have applied some sealant to the shingle you loosened above the hole. Other than that great video thanks for sharing... by the way I’m a professional roofer and sent this to my brother in law.

Not the way I did it but similar. I cut out heavier galvanized sheet metal the size of the roof shingle, and then coated the metal and then pried up the shingle and coated it underneath with roofing cement , then slid the coated metal underneath the shingle and glued it all down. I then covered the shiny metal showing through the hole in the shingle with roofing cement. This way from the street you can't even tell it, your way the pieces of metal used for shingle tabs stand out like a light house in a storm. If you have some extra shingles you could do the same with undamaged ones and it would never show.

I'm looking at videos like this because apparently last night during someone's New Year's Eve celebration They were shooting into the air And the bullet came down on my roof and into my living Room.

So what's the proper fix? New decking and re-shingling? How big of an area?
The proper fix is to cut the small damaged area out and fit a piece of new decking in. I put 2x4 material underneath to support it. If it's a big area that's damaged, you may want to replace the entire 4x8 sheet.
We have a hole on the edge of the roof near the gutter from an "incident" today that needs to be fixed. Unfortunately, it's wet (light rain) and 35 degrees out. Can I still do this in the rain? It's Christmas Eve, and I'd really like to get this covered until we can get a professional. Any advice for the wet weather?
Yes if you buy roof tar that is "all weather" rated. You can install it in the rain if need be. Good luck with your project, I hope it gets patched quickly.

Hey Gary, similar situation happened to my roof. After patching it up like that, what do you recommend for a permanent fix for the small holes in roof?
My permanent repair was using new roof decking to plug the hole. I found a nice product called EZ-Plug Roof Patch. It's a fast way to make a permanent repair. I'll upload my video sometime soon showing how this is done. Once the roof decking plug is installed, then I cover it with roofing felt and then the shingles.

Roof is about 20 years old. Think this "temporary" repair will last about five more years when I will be replacing the rest of the roof anyway?
I would only plan on this temporary repair getting you through until the next decent weather day. This is only designed for a quick repair, maybe being done in some difficult weather situations. If you need to stretch it out a bit, I recommend going up on the roof every so often to see if the roof tar is holding up. 5 years is a bit too long in my opinion.

Small holes in the plywood underneath. Guess I'll slip some asphalt shingles underneath the small holes from the fallen pine tree and nail them in and roof cement them.
