So, better to just revamp the space battle CGI's a bit. But a full reboot of that masterfully crafted series? Thanks but no thanks. It's ironic that so many countries will stand before the UN, begging for help for some reason or another, and then when it does act, they blame those countries taking part in the UN mission for all their past problems.
i heard jms said that for mira alot of this scene came from her experience of the war in the balkans that raged while others (especially powerful european neighbours) did nothing since "the problems of others aren't our our own". That makes this scene even more intense for me, the reality of her rage, just picture those guys as modern day politicians and it still makes sense
the balkans have been shafted in a huge amount of ways. I heard back in the day before the Nazis Bismark was warning the Germans not to get involved in the balkans. Saying that to go there would basically destroy Germany. turns out yeah nail on the head. Im not a historian but i remember people in albania being nice during the day and then at night women would walk hand in hand. Being male i thought this was sexy until i asked y they did tat. Turns out (at the time) women in albania would go in packs to prevent "militia" from raping them. that was 15 years ago but yeah pretty sad

if I remember one of the b5 commentaries on the dvd, one factor is that her family had to flee from the breakup of former yugoslavia and ethnic cleansing that was going on whilst the UN was standing by and doing nothing
Loved it when she created the new Grey Council with not 3 of each Caste, but with 2 of the Warrior Caste, 2 of the Religious Caste and 5 of the Worker Caste cause the Worker Caste are always ignored and caught in the middle of the disputes between the Warrior and Religious Castes.
@Justin Croonenberghs The Workers are the most important part of their society, without them the other two castes can’t exist. With the Grey Council as it was, they were still ignored in the arguments between Religious and Warrior Castes.
@Justin Croonenberghs That's only true if we assume they use a simple majority for their decision making process. I always got the implication that the grey council used a two-thirds majority rule. In which case, the old council still screwed the worker caste because they alone of all three were in the position of being forced to choose sides against their own interests, regardless of who they allied with. With the 5-2-2 setup, they still need the cooperation of at least one other caste in order for the council to function, but it's the worker caste who ultimately holds the tie-breaking vote in the event of an impasse
Actually four. Previously Neroon of the Warrior caste assumed Delenn's place on the council, throwing the balance off. That's why there are four members left when Delenn stalked off when the others followed.
You know what I love about Delenn? She was kind, she was patient, she was understanding. She was the sort of person who, when told that the man who fired the first shot in the Earth-Minbari war was so wracked with guilt that he believed he was King Arthur and needed someone to take away the symbol of his pain, would do it and take it completely seriously. But you did not ever, under any circumstances, want to make her mad. Because she would wreck you
She had the strength that comes from Righteous angel when called for.but it was her righteous words and motivation.deleverd softly or sternly.that gave any anger on her part legitimate.
2:32 That staff was a real problem. It was originally built a little too strong and there are some great blooper reels of Delen trying to break it over several takes. The crew finally weakened the staff a bit and you can see a quick jump cut where she breaks the staff in a scene that was probably meant to be one long take originally. :)
I also love how, in the moment, this seems really awesome, “ah, hell yeah!” But later on it kind of screws everything up and causes a civil war. B5 was a lot of that. “I’m doing the right thing, but it’s also going to screw me over.”
At that point the Minbari were stagnant, almost standing still with no progress. Delenn may have caused civil strife, but her people needed the wakeup call. The change to the Grey Council was the most significant
Its those little touches that matter the most. The last few seconds of this scene watch as they leave the room and one of the guys remaining reaches out to his fellow hood who just shrugs him off and keeps walking. Thats what makes a scene like this 'real"
It's worth considering that Babylon 5 always dealt with the consequences of choices, and those consequences are weighty and realistic. Even here, there are consequences. While Delenn won a victory for her cause here, and did succeed in gaining war production materials, her big damn angry hero moment had a cost. The warrior caste later took revenge on Minbari society and nearly destroyed their own homeworld. A big theme in B5 was that doing the right thing is difficult and will always result in some form of loss, but it has to be done.
You are correct. I was looking for a comment saying this, before I started a thread. They were so upset at being made to surrender to Earth with no explanation from the Religious Caste, that they didn't want to do anything else they said. In another video I think Delenn talks about the Warrior Caste wanting an enemy they were sure they could defeat, and the Shadows were not that. As a result, the Warrior Caste wanted to purge the Religious Caste from their areas, casting them out into the cold. That inspired one Religious Caste member to seek alliance with the Drakh who were raiding border regions, and had been aligned with the Shadows. Their hatred for Sheridan and Delenn (and Londo) was such that the latter were never properly motivated to find a place for them in the new order, or a world where they could exist undisturbed while they find out who they are, what they want and where they are going. Today we know about exo-planets and even rogue planets. With hundreds of billions of stars in the galaxy, they probably could have found a place to be alone for awhile. But if they could find a huge rogue planet with a moon/planet around it heated by tidal forces (like moons of Jupiter), that could be the kind of Shadow planet that might never be observed or explored. Even Za'ha'dum orbited a star, I believe.
This scene is so Epic. All the more when I found out that it was an uninterrupted take (until she breaks the Staff because it originally didn't break) Fantastic Act
Delenn repeats phrases that we first saw her speak when she took her place on the Council: I am grey I stand between the candle and the star We are grey We stand between the darkness and the light I assume this is a sacred vow or oath that each member takes upon joining the Council. Here she is throwing it back at them. It is an idea they have all sworn themselves to, but now the warrior caste is failing to step up to the responsibility they have promised themselves to for a thousand years. It is one thing to believe that some prophecy will come to pass in the future. Here the warrior caste has shown that they can't accept the prophecy being fulfilled right in front of them. I don't remember noticing this before, but when the 5 members(3 worker caste, 2 religious) of the Council leave, one of the warrior caste reaches out in an effort to stop the last one. Perhaps if a majority of the Council, 5 out of 9, remains, the Council is still intact. The last departing member pushes off the warrior's hand and leaves. In their bid to take control of the Council, the warrior caste has destroyed the very thing they had hoped to control and lead. It was perhaps their birthright to have been in the forefront in the war against the Shadows, but now that position and honor will fall to the religious caste, and especially to the Rangers.
Well earlier in the series she was replaced by a warrior caste member which made it 4 warrior, 2 religious and 3 worker. So in fact the last member leaving was actually one of the warrior caste shedding off the vow even to his warrior brother
No one should "lead" the Council, the Warriors should have been one of three parts. Their arrogance and pride caused the imbalance, and like most military types, needed civilians to do the hard work for them.
There is a leadership dispute later when the Warrior caste demand their rights (Karen style) and Delenn is literally willing to die to ensure peace. Instead the Warrior leader Neroon dies, converting to Religious as he burned.
Another nice thing about this scene is it subtly illustrates how the Minbari were on the way to evolving into the Vorlons - they were after all the "chosen" younger race of the Vorlons coming out of the previous war. They were judged to be the most like them - a civilization that evolved on a world of structured crystal that valued order, obedience, dispassion, and adherence. Since the Vorlons appear alien and unknowable their motivations would be mysterious to most. Using the Minbari as a more relatable version of them is an examination of what really drove the Vorlons: arrogance and inflated self-regard. One might even hypothesize that when Sinclair became Valen and created prophesies, he had understood enough at that point to guess at what was really going on with the Vorlons. And he used his unique position to seed the Minbari breaking away from the path they'd been placed on by breaking the Grey Council.
There were other races or groups that had been involved 1000 years ago. The Techno-Mages, it's said were seekers of secrets and followers of the Shadows. But when they wanted out, they became extinct, but their ideas and order were passed on to select members of other races. Soul Hunters look like a race that might have once followed the Vorlons. Capturing souls of exceptional individuals seems very much like what the Vorlons did with Sinclair/Valen and Sheridan. Maybe they were imitating them?
I didn’t notice before, but at the end of the video one of the council members who remained (presumably warrior caste or an outlier among the worker or religious caste, as I counted 5 following Delenn instead of 6) tried to hold out a hand to stop one of the departing council members, only for their hands to be lightly pushed away. Little details like that which make seeing this episode over and over again worth it. These weren’t actually faceless overseers, but Minbari who had worked together for decades and had once been of a single voice. Now they’re splitting apart, an event which inevitably rocks the foundations of their entire civilization. And it all begins with something as minor as a beseeching hand being pushed aside between friends.
2 warriors and a religious caste member stayed. That last member to leave who rebuked the hand was a warrior. All the workers and most of the religious caste followed Delenn but sadly only one warrior took up the mantle of what was to come.
Neroon replaced Delenn on the council. This gave the Warrior caste 4 councilors, the Worker caste 3 councilors, and the Religious caste 2 councilors. The 5 who followed Delenn were the Worker and Religious caste councilors. The ones who remained were Warrior caste. The camera shows 3, but there would be 1 more off camera. It is likely that a Warrior caste councilor was reaching out to a friendly Worker caste councilor, in an attempt to keep that councilor from solidifying the Worker caste position against the Warriors.
Right up there where she confronts the Shadows simultaneously with Sheridan on the White Star with Lorien in the background. "One by one, until there is no one left to kill! You will have failed as Guardians!"
Only in the fullness of time does THAT come to pass. At the moment in the story this occurs, you're in utter shock. Delenn just started Civil War, and a war bigger than that potentially by intervening against the Earth Alliance directly (EA at this point had shadow support in no small way)
He is the One. He is the closed circle. He is responsible for some human DNA in the Minbari genome. When Lennier talked about Valen's prophecies, she reminded him that Valen only knew what Sinclair knew.
This was scene was a powerful one in the series and Mira Furlan was great however it's a damn shame she died on January 20th, 2021 at the age of 65 from complications of West Nile virus fever:(.
Prophecy will attend to it itself. Delen was a true force if nature when she'd worked up a good mad. But could also have so much compassion for other living beings.
@vega3000 They said in the commentary that it was a weakened prop that was suppposed to break on the first take, but she got to the end of the long speech and it didn't.
I couldn’t agree more. Her character flows with the overall story. No male bashing, no weak and whiny crybaby men. No misogynistic caricatures. No sjw bs rammed down our throats. Brilliant storytelling.
@@logicsfinest3471 typical snowflake crying. ignoring how every progressive SCIFI show ever took things step by step. there were enough of you back in the 90s crying about b5 (if you knew about it), or in the 70s about original trek. you're only not crying about those older show now because you live with the societal norms of today and couldn't go around crying about "sjw! black woman being kissed by a white man!!! lesbian second in command!!!"

Well, that was true, until Delenn was removed from the counsil, she was replaced by Neroon, a Warrior. As things stood when the Counsil was broken the Religious had 2, the Workers had 3 and the Warriors had 4. That's part of why things got so bad, the Warriors held a majority and were so mad over the human war they refused to do anything.
Delenn was incredible. One of the best moments in sci-fi - in my opinion. So much for women being "weaker" than men - NOT. (Yeah - I'm a guy too BTW). I always liked the depth of the characters - the lines between good and evil were crossed by both the good guys and the bad.
This was Delenn at her most powerful. She toppled her own government to save her people, then later was willing to give her life to create a new and better government.
I love this scene. Shows just how strong these characters are and how much they are committed to the cause of fighting the Shadows. If I heard this speech myself I would damn well follow her myself.

Your wrong, they use to only three but when Delenn was removed from the council, she was replaced by Neroon, a warrior given the warrior caste a majority, with 4 members, while the workers had 3 and teh religious had 2
I dont think so. The Shadows would most likey have not attacked Minbar. The Shadow Wars was not about destruction, or wiping out all the races, it was about ideals. If the Vorlons/Shadows destroyed EVERY race that opposed them after each of these wars, then the Drahk and he Narn would have been wiped out long ago. Also, of ALL the races in the galaxy, the Minbari would have put up on hell of a fight. They have been allies to the Vorlons for over a thousand years remember.
It got to that point at the peak of the war in season 4. They started taking out the planet killers and started wiping out entire planets. They nearly obliterated Centuari prime. But Coriana 6 was going down at that exact moment. If they were going to hit the core of Shadow Support in the Centuari? (earth was another but that was a different story) You bet your ass Minbar was on the Shadow Hitlist.

I wonder if the one warrior caste member reaching out to the council member that was leaving at the end was Neroon.
If so, then it should have signaled to the head of the Warrior Caste that Neroon might not be trusted in dealing with Delenn.
RIP Mira Furlan, god you were a bad ass warrior woman.
awesome scene of delenn, thanks for posting :)
Delenn was such a badass
Awesome! I've been looking for this scene for ages! Thank you very much!
One of the best scenes of the series.
Right up there where she confronts the Shadows simultaneously with Sheridan on the White Star with Lorien in the background.
"One by one, until there is no one left to kill! You will have failed as Guardians!"
I love this scene all done in one take (until the staff refused to break then they had to continue from there)
Very powerful storytelling...
Gosh I love Delenn. She's the best.
Delenn was a very strong character and always stood out because of her strength and focus.
Delann's speech? All. One. Take. Mira Furlan is BOSS!
The first part of this scene takes on a bit of humor if you know who Valen *really* is...:-)
Only in the fullness of time does THAT come to pass.
WOW amazing series and the writing is awesome
This was scene was a powerful one in the series and Mira Furlan was great however it's a damn shame she died on January 20th, 2021 at the age of 65 from complications of West Nile virus fever:(.
Prophecy will attend to it itself.
Delen was a true force if nature when she'd worked up a good mad. But could also have so much compassion for other living beings.
Mira so GREAT
"Look out, she's got a stick!" Darkplace'd
He words to the guard beat both the 'death incarnate' and 'be somewhere else' speeches.
@vega3000 They said in the commentary that it was a weakened prop that was suppposed to break on the first take, but she got to the end of the long speech and it didn't.
"Speak softly and carry a big stick."
Love Delenn!
Mira Furlan the best
When the lioness roars everyone else shuts up.
This is how you write a strong female lead. Current Star Wars show runners could learn from B5.
Cry more.
Or buy less movie tickets.
Dude... every modern sci fi show/movie could learn from B5. Its one of the best written of all time.
Interesting how they had six members follow her out, which by that time, means at least one member representing the Warrior caste agreed with her.
RIP Mira 🙏
I wonder which of them was Nurue, the warrior who would ultimately die for Deelen?
Good question - I always wondered if it was the one who reached out at the end.
@@genghispecan Someone suggested Neroon was the one the Warrior Caste reached for.
You will step aside in his name and mine, or, in Valens name, I will tear this ship apart with my bare hands until I find them, move aside, rest in peace Mira Furlan
the last one to leave "don't touch me" lol
Well, that was true, until Delenn was removed from the counsil, she was replaced by Neroon, a Warrior. As things stood when the Counsil was broken the Religious had 2, the Workers had 3 and the Warriors had 4. That's part of why things got so bad, the Warriors held a majority and were so mad over the human war they refused to do anything.
Plurality, not majority.
Jerry Maguire should take notes, he only got Renee Zellweger to defect with him.
Delenn was incredible. One of the best moments in sci-fi - in my opinion. So much for women being "weaker" than men - NOT. (Yeah - I'm a guy too BTW). I always liked the depth of the characters - the lines between good and evil were crossed by both the good guys and the bad.
Can’t find when she reformed the council
I could never quite figure out if the one who tried to stop her actually joined her?
The Grey Council are all cooking hot dogs and smores under a big exhaust fan.
She is for it. Her cause is life, after all.
"Well, shit, she broke the stick...guess that's good enough."
This was Delenn at her most powerful. She toppled her own government to save her people, then later was willing to give her life to create a new and better government.
Shepard speech to the Council
I love this scene.
Shows just how strong these characters are and how much they are committed to the cause of fighting the Shadows.
If I heard this speech myself I would damn well follow her myself.
She was determined..😮..
THE COUNCIL IS BROKEN
All but the Warrior Caste left.
Dude at the end trying to grab other dude... "Yo, for real?"
Okay. 5 of 9 left. Was it worker or religpus caste who remained?
I'm not completely sure but I think there were only eight present.
"EVEN the humans are fighting one another" haha when are we not?
This and many other scenes convinced me that Delenn is scary when she is angry.
English version of this clip?
Why is English subtitled in English?
The last 3 are sitting there going but what about the free pizza we were promised
Damn even the Minbari have a military industrial complex
What is Delenn's position regarding the universal health care?
Delenn is such a sweetheart, unless its the special time of the month, now that shes half human.
If by "special time of the month" you mean "somebody just did something really dumb that's gonna f*ck over my Cause" you're absolutely right.
@Mazryonh Oh please don't hurt me, pleeeeaaaaase!!!
Dont ever get Delenn mad.😊
the breaking of the staff was inconsequential compared to the breaking of the grey council and eventually of Minbari society.
Spihk Heartbust!? Spihk Heartbust Analyze & Discuss The True Reason why a Person From The Holy Bible by the name Moses did not Physically Participate in the Writing For the Bible Like Mathew did!?
This is Delenn's best ass tearing moment in the series.
Does this video mean the minbar is and humans are at war with each other again?
Watch the series.
No each cast has 3. Delenn was one of the Religious cast. It was a worker cast who pulled away from the warrior cast.
Your wrong, they use to only three but when Delenn was removed from the council, she was replaced by Neroon, a warrior given the warrior caste a majority, with 4 members, while the workers had 3 and teh religious had 2
The old equal balance of each caste having three members was broken, but they would have needed five members to be the majority.
You're wrong. It was a warrior. Delenn was replaced on the council by a warrior - Neroon.
All that is required for the triumph of evil, is for good people to do nothing.
this should have been called "how to make a Minbari crap its pants."
All I can say is...please don't hurt me.
I quite like the idea of redoing Babylon 5, but it's just not possible without Mira Furlan.
I would leave it alone thank you.
Just upscale the resolution and do a light touchup (noth how they messed up the original SW trilogy!) and release it on bluray and you're good to go.
That is an eerily prescient comment.
We move togetherness
I am with you sincerely love Larry Duane aravat
