    So You Want to Learn To Draw?
    Learning how to draw is definitely not an easy task. It takes tons of focus and a proper way of looking at the world. There is no substitute for hard work but as with all disciplines, better instruction can lead to better results.
    While I am trying to learn to draw quick, remember one things that artists are stubbornly persistent people. They toil in their craft until they get it right. That doesn't mean it will take you a decade before you draw something meaningful though. Keep practicing your drawings and really scrutinize over each work.

    Great video - main things for me would be:
    - Learn how to 'see' - people's natural instincts are to draw what they think they see
    - Learn how light and darkness work with each other
    - Just do it. Get on with it.

    Honestly as someone who considers drawing a great hobby/passion of mine for some years now, you did really, really good! Some of the stuff were not easy, no matter how "simple" they may look and your drawing of the hand was amazing. You straight up used your hand as a reference, used geometric shapes to understand/build the overall shape, used some foreshortening, and did a good job on the shadows. Very well done- this just shows that all we need is practice.

      @Sam-rk3ng 3 года назад +8

      @@raniab5487 They're really not; all you need to get started is a set of graphite pencils (preferably with a 6B or darker), an eraser, a sharpener, dollar store paper, and maybe a blending stump. You don't have to worry about things like kneadable erasers, mechanical erasers, gel pens, drawing paper, etc. until you understand the fundamentals of lighting, proportions and how subjects interact. If you're spending less than a couple hours producing a piece, you don't need anything else. If you're a beginner, $100 pencils are no better than $10 pencils because you lack the experience and knowledge to bring the best out of them. If you haven't started drawing yet, and are still interested, just go for it! I promise you it's not as expensive as you think it is to get started. I've been using a set of 12 Derwent medium graphic pencils that cost me less than $15 for over a year and only needed to replace the 6B

      @@Sam-rk3ng I got a set of pencils from 2h till 8B. But they all looked the same to me. I could not tell the difference so i just use them at random. I only invested in 12 alcohol markers and those pencils. Otherwise i only had my old colour pencils, normal pencil eraser sharpner. I also got a normal blank ring notebook for drawing. I wanna try water colour markers but my paper is too thin for it. Its also kinda small.

    • @Sam-rk3ng
      @Sam-rk3ng 3 года назад +1

      @@raniab5487 huh that's weird. I've never had a problem like that. The difference between the 8B and the 2H should be night and day. The 8B should have a much softer lead allowing it to apply much thicker and darker than the 2H. You might want to think about trying another brand. Markers and coloured pencils tend to be more expensive (which is why I would suggest starting with graphite). I don't know too much about markers as I don't use them myself, so do your own research, but I think you're looking for a heavy grade smooth paper. If you're going for an animated style, black fineliners will make your work pop. If you're using the markers as a base colour for realism, however, I would recommend for a beginner/intermediate: wax based coloured pencils such as prismacolor

As for the beginning when I was just drawing spheres, instead I drew the sphere then, then repeated it only this time try to turn it into something, I went with fruit, there's lots of round fruits lol.

    A lot of drawing is copying off of references so saying you were 'only' doing that in the beginning I would say is big no-no. There's absolutely nothing wrong with copying off of references when you are drawing, because you always learn new things when you do this. So, absolutely, keep doing that. It's how you learn how different materials work in different lights, how objects look in shape and so on.
    For drawing portraits, something that has helped me (beside the whole finding the simple geometry shapes of everything) is to angle the face slightly. This way you can use more shading to create a depth on the face, and also, it's more forgiving if you draw one eye smaller. It's further away (depending on the angle)
    In the drawing kit, check out the end of the pencils, they will say something like H3 or B2 or HB, the H is for less charcoal and the B is more charcoal. So the higher number on the H will have a harder pencil, so it will be lighter when you sketch out initially, and then the higher number for B will be a softer and darker pencil because there is more charcoal, perfect for when you are finishing your drawing and going into shading. The darker B-pencils will hide the lighter H-pencils so you don't have to erase as much and still have the guidelines present for you that know they are there :) Just make sure you don't press too hard with the H-pencils, it's very easy to do and will dent the paper and make marks that you can't remove.
    I hope you are keeping up with the drawing, it's such a fun thing to do and you don't need much either, just a pencil/pen and some paper and you're set

    I get what you think about references and copying, and I also thought taking references or copying what I saw at first was bad, but you need to build up your "visual memory" and make those brain-hand connections pop. You need to look at what you want to draw, try to understand it (specially if it's anatomic or natural), draw it a lot of times, and then you can start adding your own touch to it. So don't worry about copying what you see as long as they're real life references, and if you do copy other artists drawings, credit them at least :p.
    Also I've noticed you never really sketch in these drawings, you always start with a really soft pencil and just try to go for the ultimate result at your first try. I recommend you to start your drawings by using hard pencils with little pressure and start drawing the basic shapes you see, more careless and freely, and then try to sharpen it out with a softer, darker pencil or a pen. This way you get a finer perspective of what you are drawing, and you go from the bigger parts of it, to finally the smallest details (also you'll feel good when you draw more carelessly once you get used to it heh)
    Keep drawing, keep observing!! :)

    Considering you don’t often draw, you’re pretty good. The title of that book you’re referencing from though is a little bit misleading. It took me around nine years roughly to learn to draw well, and maybe around 1-2 years to really get out of my training wheels. I’m 26 now and I decided when I was around 17 that I wanted to learn to draw. Even now I still have a lot to learn, but then again I think every artist can improve. I can see your improvement in one month, for sure. And I love that you’re teaching yourself new hobbies and encouraging others to do the same.
    Also, a bit of advice for faces since I draw people a lot. Using shapes to figure out where everything goes is SO important when you want to improve. I never did this for the first few years of my practise and it made a huge improvement on my art when I got the hang of it. The same goes for human torsos. I notice you kind of did that anyway when you drew the face though so that’s definitely a great start.

      Hands seem to be one of the hardest things for most artists to master. I used to be really good at them in high school. I quit drawing after I had kids, and when I picked up a sketchbook for the first time in years, the hands I drew were atrocious! I was doing a drawing of a mermaid for my best friends baby’s room, and I ended up just strategically covering the hands. I still can’t figure them out and it’s frustrating because I used to be able to 😂

    Just a point that I noticed (if this has already been said then I'm sorry) but your enitial first lines, their very dark. You will want to start with lines that are very light, I do mine so I can see them if I'm close enough but across the room, boom their gone. This means that i.e. when you draw a face and you have those structure lines in place, when you go to rub them out, they don't leave dark lines that you can see in the final product. This will make more sence if you actually do it then not but I do hope that helps anyone really. The main thing is to look into tone, this is the blending of shadows, hightlights, really anything. Once you can use tone as well as you can it will help with the scetch lines. Basically hold your pencal in different places across the length of it, or apply less force, obviusly the more force the darker the lines so try to apply as little force as possible. Or turn your pencel, if you have it directly at a 90 degree angle, it will produce darker lines the if you held it almost laying down. Holding it laying almost flat and applying less force is a great way to start with shading as well. One final thing is if you're doing shadows, it's esear to add then take away, do the lightest parts first and slowly darken them. This has helped me a tonn and I hope it helps others as well. If you do know this then I am sorry for going on about it, I just want to help others in their art journey. Thank you for takeing your time to read this x

    Let me just leave this here for some info
    *for those who doesn't know yet* ;
    - It's about the HB System -
    You might ask, why are there like marks on your pencil (e.g 4H). When you go out to buy some pencils for drawing or sketching and you'll be like: What does this mean?
    This is called the HB System.
    "H" pencils are those with harder graphite (these leave less graphite on paper), "H" standing for Hard, and "B" pencils are those with softer graphite, "B" for Black, B pencils are softer in graphite and leave more graphite on paper which means they are darker.
    "HB," on the other hand, stands for hard black (meaning medium dark).
    Now, the numbers beside them is for the degree of H or B. So for example, 4B is softer that 2B.
    Lmao, that's it. I HOPE I HELPED BUT YEA Just wanted to say this- I am still not that good with drawing and is still learning, if you want to maybe help each other, you can reply on my comment for advises and stuff shdjjs that'll help others. Thanks, have a good day or night haha.

    I found your video while I was looking for a video to show in my reading and writing class to help students conceptualize skills-development vs. reading for a supposed "right" answer.
