Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist, and was working as one of the band’s equipment managers (roadies), when one day he started playing a musical from Chopin while the band was taking a break from recording. None of the members knew that he actually played the piano whatsoever.
Skynyrd's genre was known as "Southern Rock". The Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers, The Charlie Daniels Band, ZZ Top, Molly Hatchet... Great music.
The background singers were called the Honkettes. Cassie Gaines (died in the crash), Jojo Billingsley (died of cancer some years ago), and Leslie Hawkins (still alive). She's the only one left from that era. Great song.
The piano player Billy Powell was originally a roadie for the band, they didn't even know he could play piano. As soon as they found out they fired him immediately as a roadie and asked him to join the band.
When these wonderful people were destroyed in that aircraft crash my friend turned up at our door absolutely devastated. He was inconsolable. My mum insisted he stay with us and put him in our spare bedroom. That tragedy reached across the Atlantic to England and moved souls.
Many groups won't, or can't, reproduce their studio sound live. "Dire Straights," for example, but bands the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Allmans, do it perfectly. I think it's what fans actually pay to hear.
The band learned piano-playing roadie Billy Powell played piano, after hearing him play they had him formally join as their keyboardist. Great song and reaction!!
As a roadie he was loading or unloading equipment and just took a break. Turned out to be his lucky break because he sat down and just played a bit to chill out. Billy Powell and Gary Rossington were/are my favorites. They had a beautiful approach and it connected with the listener in a solid straight line.
This video was not recorded for commercial purposes, as can be seen from the audio flaws. But it's an extraordinary document of what the band actually was like. You liked it because it's real.
In answer to your question, this is a Southern Rock group in my opinion. And this is an AMAZING masterpiece of a song…my absolute favorite from Lynyard Skynyrd. As an aside, the back-up singers in this performance are phenomenal too!👍🎊
You need to check out their Winterland concert from 1975. They didn't have the "Honkettes" (female singers) in 1975, but they did have Ed King in the band. He was a fantastic guitar player, and a big part of their creative development.
I saw them in Long Beach California in 1977. They had the Outlaws open for them. Truly a nite to remember. There's no bands like this anymore. Please listen to, lynyrd skynyrd one from the road. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Good afternoon from sunny New England...As a drummer in my humble opinion this iteration of Skynard with Artimus Pyle on drums is the strongest lineup...Although Billy Powell was THE hidden weapon of the band ✌️👍🧐
Lynyrd Skynyrd were basically a Southern rock band, but with strong country and blues influences. Keyboardist Billy Powell was a classically trained musician, which added another dimension to their sound, and the backing vocalists (The Honkettes) brought a strong gospel influence into the band. The whole gig was filmed by in-house cameras installed at Winterland, and they recorded some amazing artists and performances. In fact, they captured the original raw unedited version of The Last Waltz concert by The Band in 1976, which was also professionally filmed by Martin Scorsese and later had a lot of overdubbing work done on it to correct mistakes and cover sound quality problems.
They had more than their fair share of troubles with addiction, in band politics and tensions. In the beginning, they were one of the hardest working bands on the touring circuit. They're not country per sae, more Southern rock/soul/blues. Sweet home Alabama! And their so called affiliation with the confederacy, was just a marketing ploy introduced by management. I think the backup vocalists were hired for the last album, but would sing the back catalogue also when performing live.
There were no rules to music in the 1970s. That's what made it the greatest generation of music. It probably started in 1968, but, you know... Totally unique creativity.
This is a bit off topic, but this song always makes me think of "Dazed and Confused", which is a Richard Linklater comedy movie from the 90s, that's a period piece about high-school in 1976 Texas. It's a good flick, and it has a killer soundtrack. You should put it on your list for Bissflix.
This band was so unbelievably unique, I was lucky enough to se them the summer before the plane crash...they could literally levitate the arena...not kidding. And a rock band to have female backup singers..unheard-of. Plus a PIANO..again unheard-of. Three lead guitarist. And to talk about gun violence in Mr 38 special and alcohol and drug abuse in that smell...just unbelievably rare and special ❤❤❤
I dont know why but everytime I hear this song i think of the movie Happy Gilmore cause it plays at the end of the movie. Great song, plus Metallica does a really good cover of this as well. Great reaction Biss!!!

You can't ask for a better band performing live. Lynyrd Skynyrd, the whole band had talent that is unmatched. The great Allen Collins wrote the music and Ronnie Van Zant wrote the lyrics to Tuesdays Gone.
I'm sure you know most groups use a studio band when recording their songs. Not so with Lynyrd Skynyrd. They recorded with the same band you see on stage.
Your attempts to categorize Lynyrd Skynyrd are fun. I have lived in the southeastern part of the US all of my life and bands like Skynyrd are called "southern rock" (as stated below). Lynyrd Skynyrd is part of the Sothern Rock that inherited a great tradition of piano playing and was influenced by FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Look up Little Richard, whose piano style was copied and modified by the Beatles in their St Pepper's album, and Jerry Lee Lewis whose playing was legendary.
NOT my favorite Skynryd song by a LONGSHOT... but it is still one that I actually can understand why so many people want to get someone to hear it. It does take L.S. into a "different lane" as far as the music is concerned, and it does a wonderful job of highlighting the vocal talent that defined the band's sound overall.
This is southern rock, it's a perfect blend blues country and rock,it was Billy Pawel on piano and organ, and Gary Rossington on lead guitar Allen Collins on rhythm guitar
it's not country per say but a sub-genre of Rock-n-Roll called Southern Rock. There were many bands in this genre that came out of the southern U.S., Allman Brothers Band, Molly Hachet, Mountain, and of course Lynrd Skynrd plus many more. The music does have some country elements, it is a mix of country, rock, blues, and even jazz!
Yeah, you could say it's country influenced. They were a Southern rock band, so it kind of does go with the territory. All rock n roll though, was created out of a mix of American genres. I always kind of joke that it came from a mixture of country white hillbillies and inner-city black music, but all rock, particularly in those days, really did come from the influence of country music and the blues, probably primarily, but sometimes jazz, bluegrass, gospel, and so many other types of music. The piano did use to be more prevalent in general, but in the rock of the 60s the guitar became so much more of thing that took center stage in the sound, and piano became less common. Also, the Beatles are generally considered responsible for igniting a fire, and inspiring a huge wave of everyone wanting to be a rock star, and starting their own garage bands, and you know. A guitar was smaller, cheaper, and maybe easier to learn to play than having to get a piano and learn how to play it. I'm not a musician of any kind, but the old joke is that you really only need to learn to play three chords on a guitar, and you can play most stuff and look cool in front of girls, and if we're being honest, that is the reason why most men do it in the beginning. There's an old cliche of the guy at the party with an acoustic guitar that he can barely play very well, or sing very well, but all the girls are circled around him. Some artists, like Billy Joel and Elton John, were piano players that kept it alive in rock, and then synthesizers became big in the 80s, but it's still done though not as prominent as it probably once was.
Great reaction! If you want to see a crowd reaction to Skynyrd, check out “Freebird “ live at Oakland. I don’t think you will be disappointed and I look forward to seeing you react to it.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them several times, both before and after the plane crash. Great band. Great reaction......RIP to the band. All original members are now gone.
