Ka Ipo Lei Manu expressed grief at losing love. It is haunting. And the uncles are awesome - Kupuna Gabbys voice is incomparable. Today is Kapi’olani(s) la hanau. Aloha no ke alii. Aloha no Kupuna Gabby PAHINUI.

I'm an old man now,but my sister got me to beloved Hawaii for a month when I was 20. The spirit will dwell in my heart forever. I smoked strong pakalolo with Iz,and had a transcendant musical experience when he performed "Wahine Ilikea". No place or people in the world like Hawaii ❤️.

After a horrific tour in Viet Nam, I got to spend three years on Oahu listening to Gabby play slack-key and hang out on the North Shore drinking Primo. I honestly believed those years were the best of my life.

Dear Frank. Who knows if you'll ever see this comment 8 years after yours.? But I throw out to you this~ I just am moved to tell you, there is NO music like Hawai'ian music to soothe our soul! Gabby is the master. I've lived here 50 years, Big Island. Gabby is just ...the Pahinui!! lol
My father also served in that terrible war, although as a B-52 pilot/aircraft commander. I was a teen then & against that war. But I NEVER held with the terrible sentiments vilifying those who fought. I want you to know, Vietnam veterans hold a very special place in my heart. I have mad respect for all our veterans. But those who served in Vietnam are especially loved by me.
God bless you for your sacrifice in service. I personally thank you for it. I hope to God your life is good, & I would be so proud to shake your hand.
Keep listening to Hawai'ian music. Nothing can compare in my view! God bless you and yours.

Remember walking thru Woolworths in Honolulu in 1978 and this was playing. Went to the counter, bought it (vinyl) brought it home (Orange Cali). Still have it today. Good memories. Wishing I was young again and do it a second time. One of the best times of my life. Thanks Gabby.

My pops and Gabby were friends and co-workers. I remember hanging out at his house, listening to Gabby and his sons play music, my dad would sing with them...I never knew what I was blessed with...as a hanabata nosed kid, you miss so much...now I miss my dad and all he shared with me...but I have my memories...and the internet to share them with many.

I played this song at KGU, Honolulu in 74, and 45-years later, I'm still playing it at home. Gabby' & Sonny's vocals are haunting, and Cyril, Bla, Joe Gang, Atta, Randy and Ry's musicianship is phoenominal. The final jam, is hypnotic!! This is "old-school" Hawaiian-music at it's best. Really listen !!

I arrived on the islands in 74 with the USN and luckily served the next 5 years there at Pearl. I was lucky enough to be there during the Hawaiian Renascence and heard many of the greats of Hawaiian music during that time. One in particular that I'll never forget is being invited out to Waimanalo for a Saturday party of a Hawaiian friend who worked in the welding shop on base. At the party as was normal was plenty of music being played with none the less Gabby playing happily. His voice has stayed with me for all those years and is one of the reasons I decided to live in Volcano on the Big Island with Pele for a neighbor

Hello, mfontz 1954~ How blessed to have had that experience~~da Pahinui!! I only got to see/hear him/them in concerts, not so informal. You're among the blessed, I tell you!
I have no way of knowing if you'll see this comment, of course. But no mattah! (Responding to your comment after 8 years~ Probably unlikely. But das awright!)
I came back to this page tonight to hear this great Gabby/ Bla/ Cyril/(et al) song! If by some chance you do see this, all these years later, please accept my humble gratitude for your service! I responded to Frank Nesbitt above some months ago, it says much of what I feel towards veterans of our Beloved Country~ plus the fact I've been a Punatic for nearly 50 years.
If you still live Volcano, then we stay neighbors, brah. Main thing of it all is, cannot hear Gabby Pahinui, or most real Hawai'ian music~ without tears!
I too arrived here right at the time Hawai'ian Rennaissance was getting rolling. 1973, and then met my man a month after getting here. (still together, still in love) What fantastic f**king years they were yeah?! I WILL live here until I die here~ on Big Island, because my heart's home is here forever! Along with every cell of me, formed of dis place! Thus my body too dwells here until my time's up. Every atom of this body will return to my home, Puna.
      Me ke aloha pumehana, brother!

This is a beautiful video. I first came to Hawaii 1 year after Gabby passed. I went to the first Gabby Pahinui Slack Key Guitar festival at Mc Coy pavilion. Met Sonny Chillingworth in SF through Saichi Kawahara, but most of the others were already gone when I got to Honolulu. The setting is so beautiful. And it's beautifully filmed. Ipo Lei Manu is one of the beautiful songs written by the 4 Royals: Queen Kahamanu wrote it for King Kalakaua as he left for SF. He died there and so never got to hear it. Didn't recognize cyril.

My dad owned a music shop downtown Honolulu. First of Bethel street across from the Hawaii theater. Then to King Street then at last to Nuuanu. All old timers came in to buy strings, picks and things. They used to come in and jam on the martins. Aunty Genoa and her gang. It was my childhood listening to them make music. They were my Hanai aunties and uncles. The place was called Sharps and Flats.

My mother inlaw Lin Kiu, who managed the dining room for old House of Young in Kapahulu, while her husband and sons did all the cooking - would give Gabby free access to the bar cooler to help himself with the beer whenever they came to eat and relax. Mom would know how much to charge Gabby by the number of empty bottles he would stack up. I'm sure she short-counted a few here and there. Though mom couldn't speak much English, she and Gabby had a mutual agreement and would make small talk.

Telling oneself 'they are most gorgeous on the planet' smells like arrogance to me.
